Old West Cafe

Holy camole good! I preplanned this stop along the route from Colorado Springs to Durango, and I'm so glad I did!

Lou makes a mean green chili... she uses enormous chunks of fresh pork and just the right amount of spice. There are many ways to enjoy the chili, but I chose to do it on the double patty open-faced burger. The burger was thick, the sourdough bun soaked up the chili perfectly, and the fries piled on top were just the right texture. This was ooey-gooey goodness at its best. And Lou herself was fantastic - stopping and chatting with us after our meal was done and giving recommendations for the rest of our trip.

My mom also loved her meal - chilies rellenos that were deep fried. She was making just as many yum-yum noises as I was!

I will definitely go out of my way to stop here for a meal again!

Almost literally at the junction of highway 160 and CO159 in the southeast corner of Fort Garland sits the Old West Café.  Consistency is what makes this place a good restaurant.  Year in, year out, seems to not matter, they come up quality no matter what.  The menu is full of standard meals like a club sandwich or a bowl of chili or a simple soup and salad.  The rustic appeal of the interior and exterior are typical of small Colorado mountain towns.  Friendly service, reasonable prices and an interesting location.  All travelers on these roads should avail themselves of what the Old West Café has to offer.

I was back here last weekend. Lu was not around which normally is not a good sign. However, the cook did a great job cooking our double hookup burgers. My brother agreed, we're both burger aficionados, that this is the best burger we've ever had. The service was good, Sonia, did a great job. Well done, again.
