Holy camole good! I preplanned this stop along the route from Colorado Springs to Durango, and I'm so glad I did!
Lou makes a mean green chili... she uses enormous chunks of fresh pork and just the right amount of spice. There are many ways to enjoy the chili, but I chose to do it on the double patty open-faced burger. The burger was thick, the sourdough bun soaked up the chili perfectly, and the fries piled on top were just the right texture. This was ooey-gooey goodness at its best. And Lou herself was fantastic - stopping and chatting with us after our meal was done and giving recommendations for the rest of our trip.
My mom also loved her meal - chilies rellenos that were deep fried. She was making just as many yum-yum noises as I was!
I will definitely go out of my way to stop here for a meal again!
Almost literally at the junction of highway 160 and CO159 in the southeast corner of Fort Garland sits the Old West Café.  Consistency is what makes this place a good restaurant.  Year in, year out, seems to not matter, they come up quality no matter what.  The menu is full of standard meals like a club sandwich or a bowl of chili or a simple soup and salad.  The rustic appeal of the interior and exterior are typical of small Colorado mountain towns.  Friendly service, reasonable prices and an interesting location.  All travelers on these roads should avail themselves of what the Old West Café has to offer.
Review Source:I was back here last weekend. Lu was not around which normally is not a good sign. However, the cook did a great job cooking our double hookup burgers. My brother agreed, we're both burger aficionados, that this is the best burger we've ever had. The service was good, Sonia, did a great job. Well done, again.
Review Source:Hands down best chiles rellenos I have ever had in my life. Do yourself a favor and order these. Actually, do yourself a favor and ignore the beat-up exterior and just eat here. Yes, the toilet in the women's bathroom seems to have partially subsided into the floor and is now cockeyed. Yes, the seats are all dirty and worn looking and most of the other patrons will probably be elderly locals - but the food is really good.
Review Source:Just happened to be passing thru Fort Garland, CO and we were hungry. Â We saw this place and "took a chance" on eating here. Â Normally would not eat at a place where there were no cars in the parking lot, but we are glad we did. Â They make the best green chile ever. Â That's all we had, plus a drink, but it was enough to get us on down the road a ways. Â We would definitely eat here again when passing thru. Â The server was very friendly and helpful.
Review Source:If you find yourself driving over the 160 pass near Walsenburg/Alamosa, stop in between for breakfast. Â But first make sure you like good, greasy, filling diner food, and cheap breakfasts. Â Bonus points if you like green chile and smother it on everything you order.
That's what we did. Â We had a big plate of hash browns smothered in green chile and two fried eggs, and a chile relleno smothered in still more green chile. Â To cut the spicy, I had a hot chocolate, which came with a whipped cream tower.
Friendly, quick service and views of a horse ranch rounded out the breakfast. Â I'm glad the woman in the town before this recommended it. Â If they put a smidge less cornstarch in their chile sauce, they'd be close to perfect for a roadside diner.
