I grew up in Europe on the north sea. I worked thru out New England and bar none I have never had better Fish and Chips in my life. The batter was so delicate and not even a hint of the oil it was fried in. There salads were to die for as if they were hand picked right out of the garden and hand washed. I wouldn't doubt if the boys had. Even the linen napkins were washed with such a soft touch like I have not even seen in the finer dinning establishments in Paris. The Kona Pizza was such as to give my mouth the most exiting burst of culinary pleasure I have ever experienced. I have no ties to the restaurant. I'm 62 years old and just feel that eating at MacDuffs should be experienced by everyone. You will never have a finer dinning experience and the cost is befitting even a tightwad like myself.
Review Source:Awesome pub food in fast, fun environment
My girlfriend and I love going to McDuffs to eat. Â Usually we don't go to 'pub' style places because we don't drink alcohol, but McDuff's has a very friendly and casual atmosphere where the service staff seem totally ok with the fact that we don't drink. Â They have fantastic burgers, the pizzas are amazing and I especially love the corned beef and cabbage.
If you're in Tahoe you've gotta check out McDuff's! Â They've always got the best games on their several big screen tv's that can be easily viewed from anywhere in the restaurant/bar area.
OMG!! The place is just awesome!
1. Pear and Blue cheese salad was really good. Loved the dressing.
2. The Real Shepherd's Pie was like culinary heaven!!
3. Surprisingly good New York- style pizza. Thin crust, a lot of cheese and toppings.
4. Freshly squeezed grapefruit juice was especially good for hot weather.
Thanks! I will definitely come back next time i'm on Tahoe!
Friendly staff who spent time giving tips to the 'new pkids in town'. Shepards Pie is out of this world. Had the Shrimp and Chips as well. Shrimp was excellent but fries a bit limp. Â Pear and gorgonzola salad waw great. Ask for dressing on the side as it came a bit heavy from the kitchen. Drinks were good and reasonalbe prices. Good atmosphere, Really felt like you were in a put in the UK. Â Downstairs are the pizza ovens and takeout. Would definitely eat here next time we are in the area.
Review Source:Had the opportunity to visit this GREAT Pub over the weekend. The food was fresh and well prepared, absolutely the Best Shepherds Pie I have ever had! The staff were extremely friendly, very hospitable, and knew exactly what we wanted from our likes and dislikes. Also, Iain behind the bar was entertaining and treated us like family, even gave us some new insights into their Fantastic Scotch collection.
If you are in town for the night, or if you are lucky enough to be there longer, do yourself a favor and pay the Pub a visit. You won't regret it!
PS....Give Bob the dog a pat on the head for us.......
Good service, not so great food. Came here after seeing all the great reviews for the fish and chips and food in general. Everything comes in massive portions, if you are really hungry and care for that kind of thing. However, the fish and chips was underwhelming, especially the fish. Perhaps my expectations are too high, having spent loads of time in the UK, but the fish was chunky, pretty tough and took a bit of effort to chew and swallow. The chips were normal, but the accompanying salad was interesting -- there was some Indian flavor added, which helped with varying the senses on the tastebuds. We also had the chicken wings -- again, lots of food but pretty dry. The Scottish Thunder was mind-blowingly spicy, and we were glad our waitress (we sat on the upper level bar) took the liberty to ask for the sauce to be put on the side. In the end, we decided not to risk our chances further and didn't get the bread and butter pudding that was so raved about. It was a good place to have dinner and hang out though, nice and clean, but maybe don't come with high expectations looking for true blue Brit pub food
Review Source:So my roommates and I drove out here from Davis for a day of fun. After a 2.5 hour drive and an unexpected thunderstorm that deterred us from enjoying the lake, we went to get dinner at Macduffs.
We ordered the onion rings, chicken nuggets, chicken pot pie, and bread pudding. Everything was split four ways.
-The onion rings were really crisp and tasted really good with the sauce.
-I'm usually not a huge fan of chicken nuggets but the scottish thunder sauce was AMAZING! Super spicy, which i Love esp on a rainy day.
-in the cold weather, chicken pot pie was a must. It was just enough for four people but we were still a little hungry,
-that's wear the bread pudding comes in. I have never had a better tasting bread pudding in my life! the caramel and brandy really make that dish stand out! a must if you ever come here.
The reason I'm giving this place 5 stars is because the service was fantastic. I got a free refill and the people who helped us were so friendly and funny. They all had a smile on their face and just made the atmosphere so inviting. Could really feel the love between the co-workers and they treated their greats with a lot of respect. Shout out to Joseph who was a great help by looking up the weather back to Davis which was thankfully clear..
If I'm ever in the South Lake Tahoe area again, hopefully with better weather, Macduffs in the place to eat.
Cute place with a nice outdoor seating area  (didn't notice any heaters, though). We did not have reservations on a Wednesday evening and were able to get a table with no problem. The server was friendly, and someone else came around to check on us at least every 15 minutes.  We ordered the chicken pot pie (delicious!) and two of us order the Shepherds' Pie (okay, but bland).  They only have one dessert - bread pudding - I was hestitant because I don't like bread pudding!  However, the server talked us into it and BOY was it awesome!!  Seems like they are a dog-friendly establishment.
Review Source:Great food, meh service.
My husband and I both enjoyed our sandwiches - he had a great looking burger and I ordered the fish sandwich. Â
I had to ding them one point because I really didn't want to sit outside on the patio, however, we were essentially pressured by the waitress to do so after we asked. Â She responded with (and this is a real quote people):
"Well... if you *REALLY* have to sit inside I *GUESS* we can do that. Â *EVERYONE ELSE* is outside, though."
I'm sorry... you "guess"? Â You should be showering every customer with the highest of pleasantries that they even stepped foot in your establishment on an off-season.
Recommended by the locals who run South Tahoe Stand Up Paddle, we decided to go out here after SUP on the lake. Started with the pear and blue cheese salad, excellent. Loved the shepards pie and the Kona pizza too! The fish n chips were good but nothing stand out.
For dessert, and the only thing on the dessert menu, we of course tried the bread pudding which was like delicious French toast melting in your mouth.
The service was quick and very friendly. We will be back before the weekend is over I think!
The service is outstanding. Â We felt like we had three waiters-all very attentive. Â
The food is FABULOUS!  We had the shepherd's pie, brisket stew, fish and chips and the beet salad-it was all wonderful.  The bread pudding is worth saving room for. We ate outside  and had a view of the lake. Â
The coolest thing about MacDuff's Bob the dog.  A Rottweiler who walks around  visiting tables.  He's adorable.
This was our third time eating here and we have never been disappointed. Â This is our favorite restaurant in Tahoe.
Owner made it right, which is rare in a resort town.
Would have gotten 5/5 without the rocky start. Â My wife and I had read some reviews and asked the locals who all talked highly of the establishment. Â We arrived late on a Sunday 0845p and called ahead to see if the kitchen was still open. Â They indicated that it would be open for another 30 min, and the Internet stated the bar was open until 2AM. Â We drove over only to find someone hurriedly shutting off lights and locking the door. Â I called and knocked - no answer despite being able to see the staff.
THIS IS WHERE IT GETS GOOD!!!
The owner called me immediately the next day offering an apology and a meal, if we would give them a chance. Â Everyone was very friendly and the owner was apologetic yet jovial, but the food was absolutely amazing. Â
We had a beet and walnut salad (I know beets are usually horrible) that was so good it set the stage for the entre to come. Â An order of onion rings which were lightly breaded like good tempura with a spectacular dipping sauce hit the spot. Â The truffled Mac and Cheese is enough to keep you coming back again and again and kept me dreaming about morning leftovers. Â The eclectic Italian sausage and peppers sandwich left my brain writing checks my stomach couldn't cash. Â I am not easily won over, but the staff and owner made sure we and all the tables there went home happy.
If your in south shore looking for a fun place with great service MacDuff's is a place where you can be sure to go home full and happy. Â We highly recommend it!!
I can see why this is a local favorite! Â My girlfriend and I were planning a visit to South Tahoe to work the Valhalla faire, and she asked me where I'd like to eat dinner over the weekend. Â I've been on a British pub food kick lately, and didn't expect there would be such a place in Tahoe, and happily discovered this place via random google restaurant search around the Tahoe area. Â
Being hungry after the long drive, I knew I'd be eating a sizeable meal here. Â I started with the clam chowder...and it was good enough on its own that I didn't need to add extra spice, not even salt and pepper. Â Plenty of meaty clams, creamy to just the right consistency. Â Then I decided to take a chance and order the fish & chips after reading the yelp reviews. Â Now, I am extremely picky about my fish and chips (check out my review on Cook's Seafood in Menlo Park), but this place lived up to my expectations and more. Â There was more than enough meat on the pieces, the portion was so big that I could not finish it, they were tasty and crispy, and did not drip grease after I bit them. Â And the coleslaw served with it was spiced perfectly with a unique blend of cumin and ginger. Â It was so tasty that I convinced my girlfriend to try it...and though she normally hates cabbage, she said she would happily eat that particular slaw. Â The other friend I was with tried a bite of the fish and immediately ordered her own portion.
I asked the waiter to recommend a brew on tap, and he suggested the "Great White." Â It had a hint of orange flavor and was not overly bitter with hops the way many beers I've tried are. Â Tasty and went well with the dinner. Â And even though I was full, we decided to order one dessert for our party of four just to taste it (they only serve one...bread pudding with vanilla ice cream). Â As lovely as a caramel milkshake with a pie crust. Â That's all I can say.
I work the faire every year, and you can bet I'm going to make at least one trip every time to come to this place. Â It really is that good.
Incidentally, the dog does wander around the outside lawn...Bob the Rottweiler (and yes, he's got a drink named after him!), who was as sweet as pie to the people who cared to pet him. Â It was a fun side "floorshow" to see him playing with a small pup that someone else had brought...a pup he could have made lunch out of in one bite, but instead it was as if they were best friends. Â And he didn't bother anyone who didn't want him around, and stayed outside the restaurant the whole time.
My one and only restaurant choice in SLT.
If you don't like that Bob the dog hangs out there, then don't come by, we could use the extra space anyway because it's always crowded!
The pizza has always rocked my socks but I have so far enjoyed everything else I've tried as well.
All the folks that work here are awesome but I've got to give a special shout out to Amos for being my first SLT friendly face.
It was a real treat for me to find a Scottish pub in my new neighborhood and I'll treasure them forever. Now, I just need to get the rest of my Scottish Highland dancer girls up there with me for some ceilidh-style fun :)
Amazing food. Our party had the truffle mac'n cheese, fish and chips, and the shepherd's pie. I think the fish and chips were the best item, especially the fries. Those were delicious! The restaurant is a little dark, but the cheery staff as well as the amazing food, made up for it. Good beer selection too. The place is a bit pricier than most pubs but the food makes it worth it.
Review Source:My wife and I ran up to Tahoe on Friday, May 31st and got married. We were behind finding a place to grub; since we opened it up to our immediate families.
Bob and his staff were able to accommodate up-to 30 of us and get a pretty damn good menu rolled out for us. We had appetizers and salad, didn't want more than that and it was perfect.
Perfect setting, the kids were able to play in the grass area out front and they hella enjoyed Bob the resident Rottweiler. He's a cool lay back dog, that looks likes he would love to play with kids while having a beer with you.
Great Kudos to Mac Duff's ... check it out!
Our first finding of the trip and a very very pleasant experience. Friendly wait staff and tasty well made food. Hearty portions and typical pub fare.
We tried the local ale and the fish n chips and shepherd's pie. All stellar. Kids tried mac n cheese but were unused to the sweet graham cracker crust so that was the only unexpected item. Pizzas that came by on other tables looked delicious.
Will definitely return, if not on this trip, then next for sure.
When I first saw the adverts for MacDuffs I thought to myself 'Pub food, got to try that'. Can't say I was disappointed.
The parking area is a bit cramped and low on lighting, but fits the place itself. When you first walk in the front door you're greeted with a great window into the kitchen where the pizza ovens are situated and the staff there were quick to shout out a welcome and direct us to the dining area upstairs. Oddly enough there is also a dining area immediately to the left on the ground floor, but with the bar upstairs it remained unused.
Once we climbed up the stairs there was a healthy buzz to the place that had us excited to get to the grub. While waiting for one of the tables to free up I couldn't help overhear how people were exclaiming how good one dish or another was and it just upped our anticipation. The dining area strays a little bit beyond 'cozy' into 'cramped' but the servers navigated the tables without a hitch.
When we asked the waitress for some help she was friendly and knowledgeable and, while the pasta special sounded good, even helpfully steered us away from the pasta stating 'If you wanted Pasta there are other Italian restaurants out there, but we do the best pub grub'. Mildly amusing to be told that by a server, and begs to question why they even bother with pasta specials when they steer you away from it.
As everyone around me seemed to have a bowl of soup in front of them I decided to jump on the bandwagon and try the clam chowder as well. Must say it was damn good and one of the best I had in the area. The chowder was nicely seasoned and the clam meat wasn't overcooked and practically melted in my mouth.
After that our table has some Shepard's Pie and Fish and Chips. Classic pub grub. The Fish and Chips were nicely seasoned with a peppery cole slaw on the side that accompanied it nicely. The minor downside to it was the slaw was also served on the same checkered paper the rest of the dish was on so halfway through the meal the plate literally came apart on us. Soggy and ripped paper started to work it's way into the food so we had to eat quick or eat paper. Perhaps a small bowl would be better.
The Shepard's Pie was good, but on first impressions I was disappointed. The mashed potatoes they use as a crust was nice and tasty, but the person who layered the top didn't clean the edges very well before it was placed in the oven. As such, there was a nice golden brown crust in the middle of the dish, but the sides were burned black to ash and made the entire dish smell burned. Fortunately, it was only the very top edges and after chipping away the burned bits and pushing them to the side the rest of the pie was delicious.
Our server suggested the bread pudding for desert and we bit the bullet and gave it a try. Their bread pudding was run through the same pizza oven till it's pipping hot and topped with vanilla ice cream to give it a nice contrast between hot and cold. Some found it overly sweet, but overall it had a nice taste and consistency to it. Â
Bit of a cramped decor, but the buzzing atmosphere made it comfortable. Great and friendly service that is not afraid to point out things to avoid. The only problem I had was the devil in the details. The Shepard's Pie was delicious, but the burned crust due to not cleaning the topping clearly when made was a huge turn off. So was the soggy paper under the Fish and Chips with the cole slaw as the meal continued. Would still recommend this place to others though.
Helpful tip though. While their discounts aren't as obvious as other restaurants, you can still get a solid 10-20% off if you attend some of those timeshare sales pitch. Especially handy if you intend to patron their bar which we never got around to doing.
Approaches 4 star quality in terms of the food. Â They are clearly aiming for gastropub with the slightly contemporized fare. Â I had the Bangers and Mash and it was good. Â The gravy was fine and I like the delicately cooked onion rings. Â The sausages were a bit saltier than average, though. Â I also feel that it should have come with a salad or something for the price they charge. Â I look forward to trying their pizzas or burgers some time in the future. Â The waitress was receptive and I have no complaints about the customer service. Â I didn't see any dog, mentioned in previous reviews.
What I do have a complaint about is that a plate of sausages and potatoes cost nearly $20, even during the lunch hours. Â One could assemble a nearly equivalent meal from the grocery store for about $8 or less. Â I understand that there are only so many pubs in South Lake Tahoe and that the market obviously bears their steep prices, but that doesn't make locals want to come any more often. Â
I am of the mind that bars should be a place where you can get good and remarkably reasonably priced food, as the revenue really comes from the alcohol served. Â Having a significantly cheaper lunch or shoulder season menu or a locals loyalty card would help things a bit, but if you want to get your money's worth, consider hitting up Himmel Haus, which actually lives up to its more reasonable prices and feels like even more of a gastropub with its German American interpretations.
My boyfriend and I came to MacDuffs Sunday for dinner after eating mediocre crappy food at the casinos.
First things first, Joseph came to take our drink order and he was super friendly and knowledgeable. He recommended the LaMerle IPA and my boyfriend said it was great! Â I also was getting over a cold and had a hot totty made with tea and a ton of honey that was awesome!
The food is big portions, the calamari appetizer was cooked perfectly and for those who don't like the tentacles it is the steak cut in to big thick strips and worth it. We also had the pear and blue cheese salad and Shepherds Pie that was very tasty. Â The prices are hard to beat for a nice hearty meal.
You can tell this place is family run and the waitresses are also very friendly and great service. Â Can't wait to come back in July!
Go here and have dinner and some beer!!
Yelp brought me here and I'll be back again. Wish I could give it 4.5 stars!
Came with a friend  on a business trip, I had and loved the Triple B Burger, he had and loved the Stew. I've spent a lot of time in South Lake Tahoe and this is now on my top 5 list of places to eat.
I would have given it 5 stars but when you walk in the door downstairs, it felt closed, almost didn't notice the stairs going up to the bar. Maybe I'm just daft?
Good food and good service. They could do without the "greeting" from the dog as you walk in though.
My husband and I ordered the Scottish breakfast and it was pretty good. Everything tasted homemade rather than over processed an fake. Like I said, the food was quite good. The service was just dandy too. The woman who served us was well spirited and wry sweet. He handled everything quite easily even when the place started to get full.
The only thing that threw me was the dog. I am an animal lover through and through but some things are best left home. A dog doesn't belong in a place of business, especially a place that serves food. It's unsanitary and somewhat dangerous no matter how nice the animal. I say this because as soon as I got to the top of the steps, I was suddenly greeted by a very large dog's nose between my legs. That's one thing I can't stand as it both startled me and invaded my personal space. During our meal, the dog came over and stuck its nose on our table begging for food. Again, unsanitary for a place of business. It's upsetting too because I liked the place other than that.
Always a super friendly staff with very prompt service. Â Not to mention I think they have the best burger I have ever had. Â I don't say this lightly because I take my burgers very seriously. ;)
Get the "Triple B". Â That is Blackened, Bacon and Blue Cheese. Â Then add the optional fried egg on top and some grilled onions. Â It REALLY does not get better than this. Â Next thing I need to try is the pot pie. Â The problem is I cannot take myself from this burger to get it. Â
So, Triple B with a fried egg, grilled onions and a cold Boont from the draft. Â You will not be disappointed.
MacDuff's is an interesting place. Good beer choices but I had a great vodka cocktail with Fresca (my favorite) and fresh grapefruit. Yum! Â Service was ok - hostess was a bit snippy but ok. Â My husband and I split the pear, gorgonzola and candied walnut salad to start. It was delicious - a very large portion with a generous amount of walnuts. Â The boys had onion rings served with remoulade that they gobbled up. Â We tried the Reuben, chicken pot pie, a burger and a chin sandwich and all were very tasty. We ordered the bread pudding due to the rave reviews. Â It was ok but different than most bread puddings I've had. It was like slices of white bread drenched in caramel sauce with some vanilla ice cream - just ok but not worth the calories.
We'd come here again - certainly not a fancy place. You could stop in right from the slopes in your ski gear if you want.
This place is the truest pub-style spot Tahoe has to offer. And that is not a statement of suffering choices: this spot is far and away one of the most legit pubs I have ever been to in the country!
Joe was our dude, and he was Johnny-on-the-spot for each and every request and recommendation request we could throw his way. The classic choices of fish n' chips and Shepherd's pie were enjoyed and reasonably paid for with no regrets. The Moscow Mule's and Tahoe Local Lager were served with generous mind-spinning portions, keeping our minds in the "sweet spot" of our vacation, and the service is without flaw.
No doubt this place will warrant many more sequel visits to come.
Cheers to the champion pub team that is MacDuff's (and extra special thanks to Joe)!! B-)
I guess my expectations were too high after seeing all the yelp reviews and hearing my friends rave about this place. When I went there around 6 ish it was already crowded. The waiter wanted me to sit at the bar but I wanted to sit at the table since there were 2 empty ones. Shortly after sitting down the waiter asked my boyfriend and I to move to another table to pair up with a daughter and her father. I had no problem moving since it was super crowded and I can tell they were trying to maximize space in a small area. There was definitely a pub feel to this place and you could tell it was a local favorite.
Anyways onto the food, I ended up sharing the poached pear and blue cheese salad which was amazing. It was enough to feed 2 people and was delicious. I really enjoyed the candied walnuts and everything was super fresh. Then i had the fish and chips. They just reminded me of normal fish and chips and it was not very greasy. The coleslaw that came with it wasnt very good and the french fries tasted like any other french fries. Â I had a bite of my boyfriends shepards pie and thought it was pretty good but I expected it to be better since everyone was raving about it.
Overall decent place and worth a try, I did not go skiing or exercise during the day before going here so maybe if I was famished and starving after exercising it would taste better. It is worth trying it out even though it is on the pricier side. The portions are decent, they arent enormous like the portions at a chain restaurant. It is on the pricier side
