We stopped here after rafting the south fork of the American River on the recommendation of our guide. The kids were hungry and weren't going to last till we got to San Francisco.
Turned out to be a really nice place. Most seating is outdoors, but we were able to find shady spots which was pretty key since the day we stopped was hot right in the middle of a record heat wave for the area. There is a set-up for live music but we were there in late afternoon so don't know how that is, although it seems like it would be good.
There were several different pizza varieties, most you won't find anywhere else like potato and pesto. They offer small and large personal sizes which is a good thing since pretty much anyone can find something that appeals to them without ruining everyone else's meal (how many times does the anchovy lover have to suffer when all you can order is a large pie?).
The service was quick and friendly.
I'd go back if we were ever in the area again.
Stopped in after a day of river rafting on the recommendation of some of the rafting guides.
FIVE STARS for:
Place is packed and happening.
Live band on the patio.
Good drinks.
Totally relaxed atmosphere.
Patio was set up well with nice lanterns and ambiance.
Friendly staff.
ONE STAR for:
Food
Service time
We ordered one "personal/mini" Â pizza and one "small" pizza.
Okay, this was a big joke. One was a 3" x 3" piece and the other was two 3" x 3" pieces. Delivery of those teeny pizzas was about 45 minutes. After a day of rafting you are expecting a personal size pizza like they have a Round Table, Shakey's BJs, etc. We were still hungry after our four bite pizzas, but the wait time was so long we just couldn't order another "piece" so we split.
The salads seemed to arrive for other tables in about 20 minutes.
If you're hungry, go somewhere else.
If you want to chill with a beer on the patio with music, go to Marco's.
The tofu curry is pretty bad - there's nothing indian or nepalese about it. Â Curry is supposed to be flavorful gravy, not watery vegetables. Â The only thing good there was the water and the beer, which you could get at other places too. Â The pizza was hard and crumbly, probably old? Â No offense to marco.
Review Source:I feel bad giving any place two starts but I will say the ambiance and service was excellent the food was ehhh. Â I mean what can one expect in a small town with limited options. Â We went there after a day of rafting FAMISHED and the food was disappointing. Â The pizza was square and the dough and cheese to sauce ratio was completely off. Â I don't like big doughy pizzas with little to no sauce and tons of cheese. Â I thought the entire meal was very overpriced as well. Â Great place to sit, relax and enjoy a brew and picture yourself in Santa Barbara but not to eat.
Review Source:I went to Marco's one night after a guide from a rafting trip recommended it. Â It's a casual spot with all outdoor seating, which I liked a lot. Â The kitchen was technically closed, but they served us anyway.
The best part was the live music. Â The band was only ok, but nothing says summer to me like sitting under the stars with friends, good beer and reggae. Â
The negative was the pizza and breadsticks. Â The crust was thick and very hard, so I gave up on eating about 1/3 of the way through. Â I noticed my friend and Tintin doing the same. Â It was cheap so not a big loss.
4 for the venue, 2 stars for the food, so 3 stars overall. Â It was a nice spot to hang out for a couple of hours before heading back to camp.
Good food. Â Lots of times there is live music in the patio area, also quite good. Â They usually have at least one good beer out of 3 on draft. Â Great place to hang out in the evenings, under the grape vine lattice listing to music, sipping a pint, and eating a unique pizza. Â My main problem with this place is that it is only open in the summer. Â Sometimes it can get really crowded with a rush of people getting off the river and it might take a while to order your food from the window and get it delivered to your table. Â Very kid and dog friendly.
Review Source:Me and my friends go rafting in Coloma few times every year and Marco's is the place to get dinner. it became a tradition!
What a great place to hang out after the day on the river. Outside seating, good music, good beer and friendly people. It always puts me in "vacation mood"... it feels like Majorca!
Their Cranberry pecan salad is amazing, I have been working on finding out what is in that dressing for years now....!
Their crunchy pizza, Marco's special is my favorite.
I wish we had restaurant like this here in Bay Area!
The way this place operates has changed for the worse. You still get the great outdoor dining and lots of local flavors which may be river guides to locals just hanging for a beer. The music is generally decent.
But the reason I also go to Marcos is for the food CHOICES. Recently this has been focaccia pizza and salads. No Chow Mein, Curry Bowls or even Samosas. My kids eat pizza a lot more than me so this is a big bummer for the person paying.
I also go here to get away from the same lame excuses many restaurants give for an HOUR WAIT for focaccia pizza: 'sorry, we had a large party order sheets of pizza right before you.' Yeah, so now I'm chopped liver. Just one more reason to have a few more menu choices. If you cannot feed a full house then what are you doing? You are now just another crap shoot. No longer 'número uno' in my Coloma / Lotus where-to-eat spots.
I understand the struggles of a seasonal place like Marcos and potential cash flow issues to limit more ovens or burners, and possibly structural issues of what's applicable regarding expansion. However, Marcos us not succeeding at focaccia pizza at the first level. They are in scramble mode. And if you really want to know, the food QUALITY is not there either. If the band sucked, this would be a horrible dining experience on a Friday or Saturday night. And that's a fine line for a restaurant to operate against.
Writing this saddens me as I enjoy the pleasures Marcos has to offer. And I love watching my family have a fun together-time out. But the last experience was horrible. Horrible enough that I will offer Marcos as a selection of 3-4 places to go eat when we come to the river. Not sure what the 4th option would even be. Small town.
I priced this with 2 stars ($$) because even though the pizza is cheap, you might need a salad or beer to make a meal
We stopped here on our way back from Placerville wine tasting. It's got this really cool, outdoor seating area, outdoor bar. You order your food at a walk-up window. The menu is eclectic and simple - all at the same time. I got this really great curry with tofu in it, my friend got pizza. We drank lots of really great local wine out of plain non-wine glasses, had a great conversation with the barkeep... an absolute perfect place to grab a bite to eat and unwind with a glass of wine. I would definitely stop here again!
Review Source:Great atmosphere and a great place to get a beer and a meal after a day of rafting. The pizza was a little different than I'm used to, but I enjoyed it. The live music is excellent (I think I know who the guy in the other review is talking about, and although he looks pretty crusty, he's an excellent artist).
Review Source:we came here after our rafting/camping trip at the suggestion of the raft guide. Â then again, he recommended 3 places, and i think there may be only 3 places to eat in coloma lol. Â anyways, he told us the place was italian, which he probably should have said pizza joint instead, since that's all they really have. Â in addition, it's not the american type of pizza that you're most likely used to either. Â it's more like dolled up bread.
the prices are very affordable, so you can get a lot of food for not that much money, which is good for pigs like me. Â they have live music on saturdays, and we got to see a band set up (we were a bit early for them to start playing, which i'm actually glad, because the guy looked like he crawled out of an abandoned gold mine. Â plus he looked like he was about 90 yrs old, and named billy joe bob or something).
the eating area is entirely outdoor, so if it's windy and dusty you are out of luck, which we were lol. Â it wasn't so bad to cover your beer every 10 mins or so, but it triggered some awful allergies for me. Â i like nature, just not when it crawls up my nose and cuts off my respitory system hahaha. Â i ordered the samosa (totally out of place, right?), which was not bad. Â it came with mint chutney, but not the tamarind sauce, and i like those 2 sauces together. Â i also got a large potato pesto pizza. Â if you're expecting pizza, you will be disappointed, because it was more like fancy foccacia. Â it was a square slice of focaccia with thin slices of potatoes on top, then basted with pesto sauce and olive oil. Â i thought the food was not bad, but the rest of my friends didn't really like the food.
Marcos Cafe is one of my favorite places to hangout. Â It has the feel of some place far away, fun and exotic. Â Its all outdoor seating and wonderful on warm summer afternoons and evenings. Â Lots of folks come for the fun atmosphere. Â There is music most nights. Â The mix of friendly vacationers, rafters, kayakers, campers, and being a fun locals hangout is cool and unique. Â They rotate beer taps with nice craft brews, and the pizza, salads, and specials hit the spot. Â the best thing served is fun.
Review Source:This is one of our favorite places to eat when we're working on the american river. Â I'm not sure if i've had a bad meal at marcos. Â There is an endless pizza menu as well as some of the best salads i've ever had. Â I agree with ellen that the pear salad is amazing! but also, is the pasta salad! Â The restaurant is entirely outdoor seating, and when there's a band, it can get quite crowded. Â Unfortunately, sometimes when there are large crowds there, the cigarette smoke flows through the dining area from the parking lot - but it's outside, so it doesn't stick around long.
and the best part- No Shirt, No Shoes, No Problem!
Marcos is a favorite spot to hang out after a long day on the river, and the atmosphere is great. If only the food were equally good. Sure it tastes great after 11 or 20+ miles on the river, but almost anything would taste great then. Really, though, if you werent so hungry, the food would barely be "ok". I still enjoy the place, and Ill still go, but not for the food.
