This place is kind of a diamond in the rough...people usually don't think to go any further than the chanel for a beach bar...but, they should! Â There is a very spacious bar right on the water with table service extending down the dock. Â The food is very good, as are the drinks, and they are reasonable priced. Â
The only downfall of this place by boat is the dock space for anything over 38'. Â It is hard to come by. Â But for pretty much anyone else, this place is an A+
I'm really surprised by all of the negative reviews of the Margate. Like a few people have already said, it's not fancy and it hasn't been updated in a long time...if ever...but that is part of it's charm. Also, it's not super expensive.
We stayed in the inn building for one night and the room was big and the bed was comfortable. Before we checked out we had breakfast and for only 6 bucks it was pretty delicious! They have a free continental option as well.
Once we checked out, we were able to use the indoor pool and hot tub and the beach and lake for the day. The private beach is great, the water was warm and clean. The pool and the hot tub are huge!
I loved the beach bar. They had live music when we were there and the food was delicious.
I will definitely be back again soon! I probably wouldn't stay at the Margate for a whole week but it's perfect for a weekend!
I attended a wedding here. Let me start by saying the location was beautiful- right on the water and I loved the cute little tiki bar, the beach, and the location in general. I put my feet in the lake and it was absolutely beautiful as I imagine the pictures will be too!
That's about where it ended for me.
During the ceremony, we could hear Bob Marley blasting at another couple's outdoor reception about 100 feet away.
The wedding coordinator was underdressed in my opinion although she was very nice. The food took forever to come out- some people got their food 45 minutes after the first table finished eating- I hope the bride and groom didn't notice because if I were them I would have been angry. My food was good- I got the stuffed shells. Nobody liked the prime rib, which seemed to be the most ordered dish. Everything was just sort of mediocre in regards to the venue and service indoors.
The wedding was nice and I had a great time, but for the estimated cost that this place must have been, I was disappointed. Everything into consideration, I'd say this place averaged 3 stars.
We had our wedding here back in September and we LOVED The Margate! What a beautiful setting for a wedding ceremony, right on the water. Our guests also loved the bar/grill which was also right on the water. Our experience was great, the staff was wonderful and Lisa Pettengill was extremely helpful in the whole wedding planning process. We loved our experience here!
(What a fantastic place for Wedding photos too!)
We are  Lake Visitors Every Year.  We love trying new places to stay.  One year we tried the Margate after passing it up a number of times because it looked fancy and a little stuffier than the rest.
We were so suprised at the room conditions. Â They looked like they haven't been updated for centuries. Â The room beds were very springy and uncomfortable. Â I expected nice comforters and decor. Â It was campy like someone else mentioned. Â Not what I expected from the lobby and price. Â The beach area was very nice and they did have some activities for the kids. Â The kids used the indoor pool and they did end up with very sore eyes from so much chlorine (I could smell it also)
If they did a complete overhaul to the rooms this can be a great place. Â Also, if they added some cabins.
Advice: check out the rooms BEFORE you book. Â They don't look at all what you'd expect from the outside.
Wasn't sure what to expect since I know that the Weirs Beach area isn't known for having 4-5 star hotels, but figured why not give the Margate a shot? 5 of my girlfriends of mine decided to make a weekend of it. The Margate is certainly a resort, as it has 2 pools (one indoor, one outdoor, and a 300+beach on Paugus Bay.) It has Blackstones Restaurant onsite, as well as the Beach Bar, which servces booze and food from 11am-9pm. It stays open until 11pm on weekends (not sure of during the week .)
Room was nothing special; we booked the largest room the Lakeview Family Suite, and to be honest I can't imagine having kids stay here since its right by the enterance to the beach and the beach bar, hence a pretty good amount of noise.
Not sure if our adjoining guest room was cleaned in this lifetime, since one of my girlfriends removed her comforter to get into bed and found a lure, yes a fishing lure!!!! A prank maybe, but none of us were behind it and it looked like it had become embedded into the comforter. They need to update the decore and leave some more amenities in the bathroom for the amount of money they charge per night!
It's about 2 + miles from Weirs Beach.
Next year our girls weekend will be spent in a rented lakehouse or cottage, not heading back.
so we had no idea where to stay, so i didn't know yelp at the time, and even as of now, i don't see this place has a review!
here's the deal, stay away from this place! We selected it b/c it had a
gym (not really, it's only a few pieces of equipment), an indoor pool, very heavily chlorinated, and an outdoor pool (across the street from main building) and pool towels the size of hand towels!
buffet breakfast had spoiled milk and no jucie available, we even asked them to grab a gallon from the "bar" and they wouldn't oblige, i love my juice in the am. the food from the kitchen that we ordered at beach bar took over 1 hour to get to us and was cold, we didn't dare send it back, b/c our two young children were starving, after waiting sooo long. Our room was dirty/smelly and look  like hadn't been redone since the 70's. We were booked in for 5 days, but checked out after the first night. the management wasn't that friendly when we presented them with all our issues. It may sound like we are hard to please, but they marketed themselves as a "RESORT", not even close! we headed over to the naswa to finish our laconia vacation, we won't probably ever go back to laconia, it was one of the worst vacations weeks we spent. Not too much to do with the kids that was super fun, just all campy cliche stuff. you can spend one over night there and accomplish all the sights in a day and a half.
