I have to say, thanks to the news station for having a feature on great pizza shops or I might never had tried this masterpiece. Â I heard about this place on a feature and drove out 30 min just to try it. Â Holy Cow! Â I have a new fav in pizza. Â I have tried all kinds of different crusts, cheeses, toppings, but Mary's knows how to put together a pie. Â I think that putting meat in the sauce and letting the cheese melt after it comes out of the oven are two of the greatest ideas I have ever heard of. Â now if they would just open up a shop in Youngstown, I could save some gas money....
Try it if you are a pizza fanatic..its worth the drive!
5 stars? More like ten. Forget Chicago pizza and that bullshit they have in NYC, Mary's Pizza is the real deal. I've added this to my essential Pizza joint list as the only entry. That's right, Mary's is so good it occupies a list by itself. I'm not really sure I have the vocabulary required to explain just how good a Mary's Pizza really is, but I'm going to try.
The first thing you'll notice about this pizza if you happen to take a peek inside the box before arriving at home, is the fact that the cheese isn't entirely melted. That's because it's added onto the pizza AFTER it comes out of the oven. This is pure genius. The next thing you'll notice is the fact that the pizza itself is massive. Big, thick crust with tons of sauce. But not just any sauce...meat sauce. All pizzas contain hamburger meat inside the sauce, regardless if you ask  for it or not. While this seems like a big f-you to the vegetarians of the world, it's unclear if that was the intention because they vegetarians probably didn't exist back when Mary created the recipe.
Now, before you tear into this monster of a pizza, it's important to prepare the slice with the proper aftermarket seasonings. This means crushed red pepper. Mary's pretty much demands a generous coating of crushed red pepper. If you are short on the spices, you can ask to have your pizza made "spicy" and they will pre-season your pizza sauce with the goods.
After that, all you have to do is remember not to eat more than your stomach can handle. At around $11 for a large pepperoni pizza, Mary's is also a steal. Just remember they are closed on Sunday!
