Like a mighty Phoenix rising from the ashes...
I couldn't wait to come home and try the "new" Mayflower-recently renovated after a fire that shut it down for a year(maybe more). Â Gone is the expansive, dark interior. In it's place is a light, airy, tropical feeling-tables and paintings of palm trees.
Enough about the decor and ambiance.... Â The food is just as I remember it, except for the side salad, which has gotten better with the addition of a homemade Thousand Island dressing. They are also one of the rare restaurants that serve SunKist Orange(my favorite soft drink after Tahitian Treat)
The popcorn shrimp and fried oysters are still the greatest in town (sorry Libby Hill- you have a tendency to be a tad greasy), with the slightly sweet/spicy circular hushpuppies and not-too-creamy/not-too-sweet but just right cup of coleslaw. I've never tried their desserts(not much room after my combination platter) but they seem to be some great possibilities.
The waitstaff is as friendly and attentive as ever. Welcome back Mayflower!
The new Mayflower Restaurant in Reidsville is fantastic! The food is great and the staff is really nice.
Of course they have the usual seafood menu (much of it fried) but you can also get many selections broiled. In addition to seafood, they have chicken and steaks and other items.
The to-go section is nice, especially if you're in a hurry. No more going through the restaurant to place an order. Now you can go in a door on the side that is designated just for the to-go orders.
Check out their daily specials which are really filling and cheaper than the menu prices.
We ate at the Mayflower at lunchtime after visiting Chinquapenn. Â The crabcake special (3 crabcakes, baked potato and slaw) was delicious. Â More than I could eat. Â The food was hot and fresh, and our server was attentive. Â Clean, pleasant atmosphere. Â I tasted the baked spaghetti with salad, and it was delicious also. Â Very good restaurant!
