We were looking for line dancing in Austin on a Friday night. We left Broken Spoke disappointed that they played only honky tonk & it was an older crowd. Someone told us to head to Midnight Rodeo for line dancing, and it did not disappoint! I would love to return with either a group of friends or with a partner. The cover was $2, the drinks were cheap and the dance floor was huge and exactly as I'd hoped it would be (round, raised, nice floor for dancing).
There were a lot of people there (too many for comfort with the popular line dances) but that is to be expected. I wish they had played more line songs but either way there was country dancing to please all. I absolutely recommend it if you're looking for a good time dancing.

I went to Midnight Rodeo for the first time last night and it was a blast! They have a college night and I saw alot of people I knew their which was great! The country music is pretty good! They do some dj music that isn't country and that was pretty lame but still fun to dance to! I would suggest going here if you like to two step and country dance. They also have lessons every saturday night if you want to learn!

Midnight Rodeo is by far my favorite bar/club I have ever been to!  The drinks are cheap, the people there are good-looking, and the music is loud and great!  You can easily learn to two-step here and they also play line dances, hip hop, and dancy songs which are refreshing and mix things up.  For women, unlike most places, there is a shortage of creepy guys here.  The guys that come here are southern gentlemen in cowboy boots that will buy girls drinks without expecting anything afterward.

If you're young, Thursday is the best night to go since it is college night (younger crowd) and the drinks are cheaper ($1.75 wells).  It gets packed on most Thursdays and is never a disappointment.  Saturdays is Ladies' night and Friday is usually live music.  Only thing is that parking is difficult to find, other than that, this place is perfect.  Also, the bouncers are SUPER strict so be careful of that.

What can I say about Midnight Rodeo? Hmmm... I have had a love hate relationship with this place since I was just a youngster in high school using lime to rub off X and drink. lol love the fact drinks are so cheap, but hate that fact the next mornings. I love Thursday night college night, for the CHEAPER drinks (even cheaper then ridiculously cheap normal prices) and the Bikini contest, but again, hate the next morning, and hate feeling as if Chris Henson will pop out, How to catch a predator style lol (18+ club, bikini contest as well) I seem to find myself here maybe once a year now, and although I don't come as much as I did back in the day, its still a blast every time.

Drinks are super cheap, but they started charging for WATER.  You have to buy bottled water for $2.  They won't just give you tap water anymore.

Decent place to go with a big group of friends.  Lots of dancing, decent seating, plenty of bar space. Affordable drinks.  I was expecting something a *bit* more country western, but I would go again, for sure.

Midnight rodeo was a mixed bag for me. Like other reviewers said, they should just stick to country music and leave the cheesy top 40/hip hop music to 6th street clubs. It was great watching other people dance. Skill levels range from beginner to 'holy crap did that guy just  flip that girl in mid-air?' Still, the steps are kind of easy to pick up by watching others, and you can always follow along on the line dances. The parking lot was super crowded on a Saturday night, and there was a bit of a wait to get in. The bar was super busy, and I think their tab system is completely antiquated and retarded. Update your cash register system people! It shouldn't take a 2 hour wait to pay your tab at the end of the night. I'm glad they have Ladies Night because I would not be willing to pay cover to get in.

In summary: "It's like the Broken Spoke for the college age crowd." You can take that quote however you want.

Say what you will but there will always be a place in my heart for cheap drinks, country music, and some good ol' two steppin'. It does get really crowded but let's be honest, nothing cures a crowded dance floor like lots and lots of cheap drinks.

They also play lots of regular music for the rest of your friends to be able to shake their booties. I'm not saying I would go to this place every week but it is definitely a nice, fun change if you're looking for something different!

Okay let me start out by saying I've been here a lot (mostly on saturday night). I want to say that my group of friends will no longer be coming here due to some circumstances. 1) Saturday nights used to be 2.00 ANY WHISKEY....pretty awesome right? well now due to "rising alcohol prices" WELL is 3.00, and anything above that is 5.00 +(i.e.crown). The last time I checked you can still buy a bottle of crown for around 24 bucks, but hey what do I know? 2) $1 beers are now 2.00 for a smaller cup! 3) the music sucks now, the ponytailed dj keeps playing the same music and doesn't take requests.  I guess all good things come to an end, until MDR steps up it's game we're not going.

Great prices for the drinks(who knows what they are serving you!),music is ok.... it's not my kind of place, two stepping not so easy as I thought. Though I like country music, none of their songs were familiar, I guess need to update on that:)
Would I go again?Maybe.... Cowboys? Plenty but none of my taste... Crowded? After 11pm it got packed but with toddlers:(

Well, all I can say, is when you get a little tired of downtown barhopping nonsense, this place isn't bad!
Drinks aren't expensive, music ranges from your typical booty shaking tunes to newer country. The crowd runs very young, which leads to a little over-rowdiness sometimes. But, I've never had a bad time here.

If you take two stepping seriously you might want to stay away from this place. It is definitely packed like there's no tomorrow with 18 yr. olds and no room to dance.

I will admit for a while my fiance and I were addicted to going because we love to dance but we've recently realized how turned off we are by the overcrowding.

On the plus side, we've never had terrible service and their country music selection is young and up to date. NOW they're hip hop selection has not changed for the past year or so. haha. We can almost count down to the time when they will start playing hip hop, and the few line dances.

I've had plenty of good times at midnight so I refuse to give it anything less than 3 stars BUT if you want some proper ballroom two stepping . .this isn't the place.

Oh and they have free popcorn!
    Enjoy!

So i've been coming here every Thursday for a few months now. Thursdays are "college night" and ladies are free till 11.I've been on other nights as well, such as Saturdays which is ladies night...but the crowd isnt as good.  I have many pros and cons about this place.  If you're not one for crowds or people, dont go on a Thursday!  I think the more the merrier, but a lot of people find it annoying.  seating is scarce unless  you get their early. the crowd doesn't reach peak point until about 11:30 then holds till about 1. its also kind of clique-ey...(hence college night) For the most part the music is good with today's along with classic country.  and breaks of hip-hop in between. i mean for the most part all nightclubs are the same. seen one, you've seen em all.  they dont give out free cups of ice water, unless you are drinking alcohol. otherwise its $2 a bottle. so minors, hydrate before you come? they also don't let minors pay with a debit card, so bring cash.  but they also have an ATM machine. the crowd is lively and  A LOT of fun however. this is the place you come to, to shake off your long day at work.  just keep in mind that this place packs the heat.  most Thursdays you cant even move.

I have a serious love-hate relationship with Midnight Rodeo. I'm speaking from the perspective of someone who goes only on Thursday and Friday nights. Everything from the overcrowded dance floor to cheap, watered down drinks tells me to stay far away. The doors open early, but the crowds don't pile in until 11PM or later. I've been broadsided and whacked in the face more than once because there's just NO room to move on the dance floor. You might be drawn to the 50-cent wells or whatever, but the drinks are so weak and watered-down that I need at least 5-6 to feel even the slightest buzz. I'm a lightweight too. Not cool.

On the other hand, I like.. no, I LOVE to two-step, and few places around Austin offer free cover on Thursday nights (F, 21+) and a sizable dance floor. If you get there early enough, say 9PM, you can have lots of room to move. The DJ puts on popular and upbeat one-step and two-step country songs. Don't bother coming for the non-country tunes though; it's usually a mash of sleazy, bad pop. Live music nights are also not as crowded, and the bands have been really enjoyable from my experiences.

If you love country dancin' as much as I do, you'll probably put up with Midnight Rodeo but wonder what you were thinking when another person tramples over your feet.

No fellas reviewed this dig yet? rly?

Been here twice so far and loved it both times. I think I speak for all my friends when I say that this place gets more fun when you know how to dance. If you were ever here on a Friday night and saw a bunch of little Asian dudes and chicas ambling awkwardly around the rail between the dance floor and the doors, that was us. Still, everyone started their Two-Step somewhere. =]

Kinda wish they would cut out the hip hop, but that's just me. I saw some age 40-something Texan couples getting out there and doing some REALLY awkward tooshy slapping, beer bottles in tow, and...grinding? Was that really grinding, yall? At your age? COMAWN guys!* No. Please no! Just no.

    Live music is a plus!

*I am totally punishing my kids and everyone else by doing this when I get old and comfortable and married.

Oh my god, the moment I walked into this place I got an unexplainable urge to start dating my cousin. I'm not exactly a country-western enthusiast so I fit in about as well as an atheist at a prayer revival! I don't get what people find so spectacular about this place. If I went on a Thursday night when they play non-country music, then my opinion might be a little different. Even when they don't play country music, they play really bad pop (i.e. "My Humps" by Black Eyed Peas) *shudders*

I can't say much about drink prices because at the time I went, I was underage. I suppose the big black "X" marked on your hand is also a symbol that lets creepy old guys know that there is fresh prey afoot! I went here one night with a group of girlfriends from my college. They're big into this country shit, but I simply came so I could spend time with them. To be fair, I really did try to keep an open mind when I went here. I even met a cute guy in cowboy regalia. He wasn't really my type, but he was sure nice to look at. So, if you love two steppin' and singing about "putting boots in asses" then by all means check this place out. It just wasn't my bag, baby.

yee-haw....best place on a saturday night.  nothing like paying a $5 cover for .75 cent beers and $1 everything else!  they play a great mix of country and then throw in a few hip hop songs to shake it as well!  fun place to meet all of your friends!

To me, there are good cowboys and there are bad cowboys.

Good cowboys sometimes call you ma'am and hold the door open for you.  They make me blush.  Bad cowboys don't apologize after they've spilled beer on you and use racial slurs like they're going out of style--they make me red with anger.

Midnight Rodeo is a place to find both kinds of cowboys.  Yes, like my pal Kristen F. says, they do have crazy cheap drink specials- something like $1.25 for wells, if I remember correctly.  I used to have a group of what I called "my All-American" friends that convinced me to go here a couple times, and the promise of cheap drinks won me over.

It's a good place to people watch.  I love being placed out of my element from time to time and peep other subcultures doing their thing.  I don't exactly fit in, but I really enjoy being thrown into something I can't quite call my own.  Here, you can see people whirl around the dance floor, having the time of their lives in tight pants and huge belt buckles, swirly skirts and fun boots.  Things like these make me feel kinda nice about being a Texan, born and raised.

All that was taken back one day though, when I was racially harassed by a bad cowboy.  I'll spare you the details, but I was embarrassed and angry enough to never set foot in that place again.  Stupid bad cowboys.  You ruin it for everybody.

Oh snap, it's Midnight Rodeo.  This is the kind of place you go to when you're feeling ironic.  Or, I guess, if you really like country music...

I went a few times for really cheap drinks.  My husband says some of his coworkers like going there because they let in girls under 21, who they are more likely to convince they're decent guys, but said underage girls are "marked" with a wristband.

Sexist coworkers aside, my favorite time going here was when I took my college roommate who had come to visit me from Boston.  She flipped out when she saw "real cowboys," mini pitchers of beer, and ESPECIALLY when the live country band played a cover of Nelly's "Hot in Hurr."  Priceless (y'all.)
