Had dinner on 6/13/13.
Server was nice, yet a little clueless, and service was ok. Â They don't have high chairs, although the server was very nice with our kids.
Food was very pricy for the quality. Â Calamari appetizer was good, quite spicy. Â Scallops were good, but nothing special. Â Sushi rolls were poorly made and not very good. Â The Philly roll was made with smoked, not fresh, salmon. Â Michigan roll was just ok, lacked any kind of real character.
We had 4 orders of nigri. Â The tuna and tobiko were good, the sea bass was very chewy (previously frozen) and the salmon eggs were watery, very fishy and dull.
Maybe this is as good as it gets around central Michigan, but Denver, Houston, Austin, San Antonio, even Wyoming have better sushi for less money. Â $130 for two adults and two kids!!!
Not going back, ever . . .
Sushi is one of my favorite foods and I like to make an attempt to try sushi restaurants in the cities I go to. I've been eager to try this local spot since it opened here. I ordered a rainbow roll for takeout today for lunch. The taste was ok but it had this weird texture. It was like a sandy texture among every piece. It kind of ruined the roll for me. I've been eating sushi for years and I've never experienced a texture like this. I was hoping it would be really good since this place has mostly positive reviews in regards to the food and the price is abnormally high for sushi. Â I probably won't go back since I'm in the Lansing area often and they have more options.
Review Source:This was pretty darned good sushi. Â The menu had creative rolls. Â Everything tasted fresh. Â Of the specialty rolls we had the Midori and the Tiger, both of them were really good. Â The tea was good and smelled like hibiscus. Â My wife had the Yum Berry martini and it was good. Â The Old Fashioned was good too. Â Great wait staff.
Review Source:I've eaten at sushi restaurants in major metropolitan cities all over the country and I have to say that the quality of fish at Midori stacks up there with anything I've had from Chicago to NYC and SD. Â They use Shashimi quality fish in all of their rolls, which is very rare.
If you are not a sushi lover, they also have great non fish alternatives like the lamb chops or the chicken Teriyaki. Â
As for the service, I probably eat here once a week and I have never had bad service. Â I suppose it probably helps being a regular, but even before I was a regular, I always had quality service. Â
If you are looking for great food in a metropolitan environment, this the place to go!
Over hyped.
We had good service the whole night. Blood orange martini was one of the better cocktails I've had. The seared scallops were great, but a little pricey for only 2 scallops. We came here for the sushi, I had read good reviews online, but man was I disappointed! Definitely below average. Very small portions of fish. Both of our specialty rolls were basically rice and veggies. Maybe there was a new chef or something, but it was very bad. If you want good sushi don't expect to find it at Midori.
Side note: The owner seems like a pompous ass.
My boyfriend and I decided to go to Midori for our Valentines Day dinner because I had heard it was one of the nicest places to eat at in Mount Pleasant- when it comes to atmosphere, that's probably very true. You don't feel like your'e in a small town when you walk in, it's more of a big city feel which I really liked. We sat at the bar while we were waiting to be seated and the bartender was very nice even though all we ordered was water. We were then seated and the waitress wasn't rude, but she wasn't very friendly either. We ordered and after a somewhat long wait, our sushi rolls came. It all went downhill from here...the pieces of sushi weren't even cut all the way through (the seaweed was still attached at the bottom to the next piece) which made it basically impossible to pick up without it unraveling and falling apart. I tried the next piece hoping it was just the first one that was like that, and that one was like it too. My boyfriend's roll wasn't any better. His wasn't even rolled completely (it was very loose) and was falling apart before he even tried to pick it up. We decided not to try to eat any more of it (we had each had one piece of the roll) so when our waitress came back to ask how our food was, we told her it was falling apart so we couldn't even eat everything. Considering it's a tad pricey, we wanted to be able to eat what we paid for. She said she'd take it back to the chef to see what they could do. She didn't really apologize though. She came back and said they could fix his roll, but not mine. Considering I literally couldn't eat it without it falling apart, we got a little upset about that. My boyfriend asked if he could speak to the manager at that point to see if he could do anything. We saw him look over at us several times before actually coming to talk to us. It took at least 20 minutes for him to come to our table. He immediately got defensive when we explained our problem and it shocked me how rude he was. He said he'd have our sushi remade but he didn't apologize for anything and left in a hurry.
We've never been picky about our food, we've never sent anything back before. But when you go to a nice restaurant, you expect very good food and service. The food was good, but the poor service ruined it. If you're going to call yourself a sushi lounge, at least have the sushi rolled properly. I love sushi and I really wish I enjoyed it here, but I really don't want to deal with their staff again or give this manager more business.
Food is very good, a little pricey, but the is not any eatery like Midori in mid Mich. service was little slow and the were out of some of the key ingredients like scallops, avocado, and yellow fin. With such niche food demographic, you should always be fully stocked. Â Definitely recommend for a social night out!
Review Source:The atmosphere was urban and unique for the area, which I really enjoyed. The timing of the food was a little off, the person I was with received their entire meal before I had even finished my soup.
I started with the miso soup which was delicious. Â Although,I was disappointed that it came with a huge spoon, not the small typical spoon I usually get with miso. It made it very awkward to eat from the tiny bowl. Next was the wakame salad which was just fine, but it also came with some sort of vinegar marinated cucumber salad with crab, I believe. I've never experienced that before at any other sushi place, but it was tasty. I also sampled my dining partners house salad with ginger dressing. It was very chunky and not at all "dressing" like.
Our server was helpful, polite and on the ball, although only 2 other tables were occupied while we were there. I found it really strange that they don't open until 5 pm on a weekend, but perhaps that is the norm for the area.
Now for my sushi. I was a bit skeptical so I went the very safe route and did a spicy tuna and California roll. I was hesitant to order a $16 roll off the bat. Well, I'm glad I went with the cheaper options because I was thoroughly disappointed. The ratio of fish or fillings to rice was ridiculous. I was basically eating a mouth full of rice. While the veggies inside my rolls were fresh, the spicy tuna was not at all spicy and the crab they use for their California roll is a crab salad mixture. Yuck. Probably won't be back.
We went back to Midori this weekend and had a much better experience. I again ordered the spicy tuna roll which still looked disproportionate with the rice v. filling, but had a lot more tuna. The flavor of the tuna was so good that the taste of the roll did not reflect my original thought that there would be too much rice. Â I also ordered the crab rangoons which had good flavor but had hardly any crab in them, which was disappointing since they are $2 each. The ahi poke appetizer is hands down the best thing I've tried here, even taking the sushi into consideration, and definitely a much better "bang for your buck" than some of the other appetizer options. My husband ordered the teriyaki beef skewers and really enjoyed the flavor, but wished that they would have been cooked just a little more. Â Since the quality of meat was high, the fact that they were a little undercooked for his taste wasn't that big of a deal and we both thought the amount of meat for the individual order was more than reasonable for the price. The cocktail I ordered was also delicious, and I look forward to returning to try a couple more of the non-specialty rolls and martini options.
Review Source:Nice atmosphere, friendly servers.
Food items are a bit pricey but the martini's are worth the $8 or $9.
I had the blood orange martini, it was very good. My friend had a refreshing cucumber type martini.
I had the house salad and the veggie roll. It was the perfect serving size and I enjoyed it. Will try again.
SO GOOD! I cannot emphasize enough how great this place is. We started off with some drinks and small plates. I had the Asian Pear Martini, which may very well be the best cocktail I've ever had -- the mix of ginger and pear flavors was unexpectedly delicious. I also had a Blood Orange Martini, which was also very good and not too sweet. The small plates were also good: scallops with watermelon salad, and pork and veggie dumplings -- yum!
We split a few sushi rolls: the Ninja (crab and tempura avocado) was very good. I was also surprised that I enjoyed the Kong roll -- eel, banana, cream cheese, and strawberries are an unusual combination, but it really works. The best roll by far was the Fire up! roll -- tempura shrimp, spicy tuna, and serrano peppers. If you like spicy, this roll is definitely for you.
We finished off the meal with some dessert sushi, so clever! They put coconut in the rice and use fruit instead of fish. Also, you get a bowl of chocolate sauce instead of soy. Clever and delicious :) It was a great meal, I can't wait to go back!
I had the pleasure of dining at Midori on a recent trip to Mt. Pleasant. The food was wonderful, not to mention the martini's! I started with the Miso soup and enjoyed a sampling of several of the rolls, with the Kong being one of my faves. Broiled eel, banana and cream cheese. Sounds like a strange combo, but it was delicious! I'm not a big beef eater, but tried the Kobi Ishiyaki. It was cooked at the table on a hot stone and the sirloin was so tender it melted in your mouth. I had the cucumber martini. Again, something you wouldn't think to put in a martini, but it was so good. Many different and unusual martinis. I will try the Asian Pear next time. Look forward to stopping in again when I'm back that way.
