CLOSED!!! Â OUT OF BUSINESS!!! Â Went here for dinner a few times with a coworker. Â Service was great, but the food was bland. Â The sides of veggies that you get on the dinner plates were tasteless because they were out of a can. Â Way too much bland gravy on the steak and mashed potatoes. Â The salads were always made from fresh veggies, not bagged. Â Another eatery gone out of business in the slowly dying town of Mojave!
Review Source:We stopped here for breakfast on our way to Squaw Valley, I got the french toast they were the best anywhere they had the right amount of cinnamon and powdered sugar they where so good I usually never order French toast but I'm so glad I did. Can't wait to go back in April on our way to Tahoe.
Review Source:I hadn't been in here in years. They fixed up the outside, but the inside still looks like it did in 1993, the last time I was there. Everything other than the pedal cars is pink and worn.
The first time I ate at this location, called "Reno's" at the time, I was 5 or 6. Wish I hadn't gone back.
The pedal cars are kind of cool.
HOWEVER, I'm here for the food. Epic fail.
Husband got the special for the evening-beef stroganoff. He got overcooked noodles with tasteless brown gravy and brown meat. He actually asked for a side of sour cream to try to doctor them up. Veggies were way overcooked.
I got the french dip. It was tasteless.
Kid enjoyed her french toast. So it wasn't a total loss.
The guys in the next booth were jazzed they could get beer.
Great diner style dining experience. Stopped in just before close on a Sunday night, and the food still tasted fresh. Warm genuine friendly service from a proud owner. I got a custom omelette and my buddy had a half chicken dinner. Both of us walked away with smiles and full stomachs :)
Review Source:My wife and I stopped here on the way to Bishop for lunch and it was exactly what we wanted, good food at a good price in a good setting. Â We weren't expecting gourmet food or white tablecloth service and atmosphere, we were expecting an American diner and got it. Â We liked the touch of the funny books at each table to browse through.
The ladies working were extremely friendly and provided great service.
Will stop here in the future on our way through Mojave, any travelers between Mammoth, Sierras and SoCal I suggest you stop as well--beats the hell out of Carl's or some other fast food chain.
Been here twice with family - dinner last February and lunch today. I like Mike's Roadhouse. We had a decent steak, good chicken, homemade soup, tasty vegetables and fresh salad for dinner, and great BBQ, Tuscan Sandwich, great cole slaw, crisp fries and excellent soup for lunch. Place was clean, air-conditioned with comfortable booths; service was friendly and efficient. I sugest giving Mike's a second look if you're passing through town - this is a fun American coffee shop & diner. Standard caveat on my reviews - I rate for what a place is, not what it isn't and Mike's is rated as a very good, affordable diner - part of a dying breed in corporate America.
Review Source:I'm giving this place 4 stars to up the rating here...don't expect anything amazing while you're in this town. Â IT'S MOJAVE MAN!!!! Â WHAT ARE YOU EXPECTING OUT OF THIS DESERT STOPOVER???? Â Anyways, so we tried this place out on the return home from the Eastern Sierras. Â It was a late Sunday evening and the high desert wind was howling as we arrived to Mojave. Â We've been driving for two hours and we needed to rest and eat at Mojave. Â We saw this place next to Carls and thought we'd give it a try. Â From the outside it looks like it might be a dive bar/lounge, but when you get inside it's a totally different feeling. Â Definitely a family restaurant atmosphere, with a bunch of vintage peddle cars along the walls. Â Peg board games and random books are found on each table, with some souvenir stuff you can purchase near the entrance. Â Waitresses were very nice and gave us everything we asked for considering it was a late Sunday dinner nearing closing time for them. Â Food was good and filling, I got the burrito which came with rice and beans on the side. Â The salsa and the Chile Verde was good. Â My buddies ordered the breakfast omelet and they looked good too. Â Overall, my buddies thought this place wasn't bad...and next time I'm passing through here again maybe I'll stop by this place.
Review Source:Just went to my favorite road house/bar/restaurant in the Mojave and discovered the bar is closed and the place is under new management. Â The staff said they are transferring the liq license and would have the bar open soon. Â I gave it four stars because they still have the same great menu with great full course meals at very reasonable prices and friendly atmosphere.. Â And it's the last of a dieing breed if you appreciate the historical road house, owned and operated by local family types. Â Here's to their success.
Review Source:Chanced on this place while driving across the Mojave Desert. Â Had two very good breakfasts - best huevos rancheros I've ever had and hubby said his pork chops and eggs were very good, too. Â Service was efficient, if not particularly friendly. Â We enjoyed the retro diner look - especially the large display of kiddie pedal cars from the fifties which were on shelves all around the dining room. Â Classic rock playing in the background. Â Nice break on a boring drive and better than we expected to find.
Review Source:My man used to come here as a kid, and I didn't have the heart to tell him it got bad Yelp reviews, so could we please go anywhere else but here. I was nervous ordering anything after what you all said on Yelp, so I just ordered a grilled cheese sandwich. You can't really mess that up. Besides being made with Kraft American Singles, it was edible. My boyfriend ordered the turkey  "Thanksgiving" dinner. Yuck is all we both can say. Service was spotty. The moral of the story is to go somewhere else. I would never come here again unless I was really starving. Believe it or not, there are other options in Mojave.
Review Source:Just a short note because of Tony J.'s review. First off Tony J., why the hell would you order a streak from a place like this? That's just stupidity on your part.
My wife and I have eaten here numerous times. The food is always good, just stick with the basics. Chili Size, breakfast, Chicken sandwiches. Don't order a steak from a greasy spoon, you're just asking for crappy food.
As for the service, it could be better. But it's always friendly enough.
Over the years, I have eaten here a few times and the experience has always been pleasant. The food is good, the portions are large and the prices are more than reasonable. Our server was attentive and made sure our drinks were always filled.
The decor is totally classic American diner and the walls are lined with  antique, old-school pedal-cars and some new ones too. The tables are stocked with a few comical books to keep the patrons entertained while waiting for their meal.
Whenever I drive through Mojave, (time and hunger permitting) Mike's Roadhouse is where I will be eating.
This cafe must have changed hands. Â We have been going there for 5 years and this March 11 we went and the service was poor and the food was not what we ordered. Â The special was Sausage Scramble for breakfast. Â What came was a dish with cut up hot dog wieners. Â The waiter said it was Italian Sausage. Â My wife's dish was supposed to be an Ortega scramble eggs, but what came was scrambled eggs.
We will look for another place to eat breakfast when we go through Mojave next time. Â
We haven't had the coffee for years, since it was really bad.
I signed up on YELP to write a review about that place... I had to spit out the bite of steak that I had in my mouth. If it was only the fact that the meat was boiled... But worse, it was not safe to eat it anymore... Â You now earn the worse food experience of the year for me. And the cook, clearly did give a rat a*s when he was told that the meat was not safe for consumption... Please try not to poison people in futur...
Review Source:Driving to Mammoth and Mojave is a good stop. Mike's is unique . I had the carnitas griddle for breakfast then off to the cardiologist. Jen and Ally had sandwiches that could have made a couple meals. Everything was good and the help was friendly. The bathroom could use a makeover. the kids all had great breakfast's with fantastic thick bacon like they had butchered the pig out back. Homestyle is an understatement. The old kiddy cars are a blast to look at. 7 people for $62 not bad.
Review Source:Made the mistake of eating at the Chinese buffet down the street on our way East. Â Had dinner at Mike's on the homeward link and thoroughly enjoyed it. Â Ribs for me and breaded Cod for Sharon.
The service was friendly and the food of the "comfort" style. Â Not elegant nor gourmet, but damned good.
We'll be back.
Not so attractive...well, ok, it's a dive. I had a kick-ass club sandwich, and pretty good fries. I really enjoyed the meal. My husband LOOOVES their beef stew. He's on the phone with them NOW, in fact, to see if they're going to have it when he heads to Mammoth tomorrow. (eye roll) I'd give it a 3.5 to a 3.75 but not as high as a 4 on here. lol
But...if you want pretty good food, reasonably priced, and your surroundings don't matter much...head here.
Went to Mike's Roadhouse Cafe for dinner on Sunday. Â One kid got Sunday special #1 was turkey dinner and it came with yukky cream in stuffing and yellow gravy and dry turkey. Â Daughter got Posole that looked like canned chile. Â My son got the best meal, French Toast (Breakfast served all day). Â Â I got Sunday special #2 which was chicken and ribs. Â Chicken looked like precoated chicken from TV dinner, and I have no idea what animal or what part of the animal the ribs came from. Â Avoid eating dinner there.
Review Source:Here again a year later, breakfast was great. Keep in mind this review is for their breakfast food ONLY. If you eat something that is not from the breakfast menu don't blame me. Breakfast menu available all day. The only time I ate dinner here one time and I regretted it. Go to Mariah Inn Restaurant for dinner, here for breakfast.
Review Source:A very nice place to eat in Mojave,
If .... you happen to be traveling in Mojave, on your way to or from Bakersfield..
Mike's doesn't really look like a nice place to eat .... and often these places that look like dives turn out food giving you the biggest suprises
and make you glad you stopped and took a chance.
We stayed at the Mariah Inn and the desk help said it was the place they send people - so we went.
The waitress was very friendly and seated us right away - there were only three other couples in the cafe.
There is a dark lounge opposite the cafe that serves a wide variety of cocktails.
We had the Tostda grande with carnitas and the Chile Verde burrito.. We were told the carnitas were freshly prepared and they were excellent.
Yes - Excellent
The portions were huge and my partner could not all of the "Del La Hoya" beans that came with the meal.
All in all a nice dinner and very inexpensive......
There is a wide variety of food on the menu, so eveyone should find something that suits them.
Try mikes ... get past the nasty looking parking lot ....
and the lackluster side of the building ..
The food is really OK
Better than the Carl's Jr down the street.
It's pretty clean, at least for Mojave, and they have interest books (random a$$ junk), random puzzles and pedal cars all over. Â You can also buy stuff in their shop (books, puzzles, candy and cards). Â
The lady, I think she was mexican?, was really nice and friendly.
The food, kinda sucksored. Â Was a lot better than Carl's Jr, but pretty bland over all. Â Kinda like a carrows/denny's. Â Wasn't as cool as we hoped, but was interesting. Â
The best tasting thing of everyone was the meatloaf. Â The steak was meh, chicken ok, mash potatos had 0 flavor of potatos (I MEAN ZERO!), and the salad was meh.
Well I was hoping this would be one of them cool gems you find out in the middle of know where. However it was not, booo! It's just about below avg in my book. The food wasn't the best nor was it the worse. It was edible, i didnt spit it out or puke it out. I had some fried chicken, which wasn't all too bad, and I also had some friend seafood platter, again not too bad but I've had better.
I did enjoy the pedal cars, that was interesting. The staff was very very happy go lucky and seemed "warm" and polite. A+ there!
I actually hit up there Bar afterwards and hung out there. That was cool. The drinks were rather cheap but after a few drinks I was ready to go else where.
over all not avg, not bad. You'll eat, drink, and survive. no worries!
A disappointing experience, to say the least. Â I had what was quite probably the worst chicken-fried steak of my life. The salads and other side options were also horrible. Admittedly, this is Mojave, and you cannot expect too much, but this place is avoidable.
As for the decor and staff, I agree with Alex. The pedal cars are charming and the staff is great. Â Doesn't make up for poor quality food, however.
This is a great place to stop off and have breakfast. They have a serious collection of pedal cars for kids (collectible). It's an old-fashioned diner with various American and some limited Mexican dishes. You'll feel like you've been transported back in time about 50 years, and waiting for June Cleaver to come out with the Beaver to serve breakfast. The service is always friendly and many of the locals frequent the restaurant. In addition, Mike's Roadhouse Cafe has a bar located in the rear of the restaurant, so as to maintain a family dining experience in the front (I only mention this in case some of you need to quench a parched mouth while travelling through Mojave desert on a horse with no name).
