I really, really, reeeeally wanted to give Big Star five stars. My family member worked there for a very long time and I remember visiting as a child and loved it. Well, I went back as an adult last week--along with my husband, and things have definitely changed. It doesn't seem to be ran the same way anymore.
We were looking for sweets from the bakery and were helped by a very sweet woman who was eager to point out the best-tasting items. For that alone, they get the 3-stars. We also picked up some things to make breakfast the next morning.
There was a cart of what should have been cold food sitting right next to a cold case in the middle of an aisle. That screams food poisoning since most items in the cart were only just barely considered cold. I grabbed a bag of potatoes from this discounted cart of cold food because it seemed fairly safe still.
I wish I'd have checked the expiration date because I bought it last week--in April, and it expired January 31st...uh...whoa! The egg substitute we bought also was expired, only by a few days, but still. The cashier checking us out was rude and didn't say even one word to us. This is not the usual treatment I remember from all my visits in the last 25 years. The young man bagging our groceries was nice, so for that too, they earned another star.
Hopefully, next time we're in town, things will be different.
I do not shop here stock is never rotated and they continue to push saleing expired food! very dirty. Not friendly unless you personally know the person who works there. I waited in line for 25mins or more as the cashier shared pictures from her wallet and talked about all the drama and stuff going on in peoples lives. WOW! so i tried to give the place a few more chances. well the next time i went in the female cashier was dressed in sweats n a teshirt that has a few holes in it and she was sitting up on the counter laughing and joking with the other cashier. she looked as if she rolled right off the couch with out showering and just came to work. I walked around the store and found baskets with expired foord on clearance . produce section was trying to push sales of molded fruit with bugs around it. clear who ever runs this place is not hands on envolved and dont care . they lost my familys business. I would rather go up the road to piggly wiggly.
Review Source:This place is a magnet for Freed Hardeman students. Â It is a bit dirty and overpriced produce. Â It is a deli and bakery. Â Today they were not serving anything nor waiting on anyone. Â There was a teenager in the back which was more interested in talking with friends than working. Â so can not talk about food. Â As for the store, very dirty, not well kept. Â I will follow with an update when and if I try again on a different day as I hear they have some good food
