Comfortable and friendly. Â Plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. Â If you don't feel like caffeine or dairy, they have plenty of alternative options: try a Sprecher's Blueberry Soda or a bottle of Delirium Tremons. Â
This is a great spot to take an afternoon reading break if you're on a site-seeing trip.
Bathroom was sufficiently clean.
Don't hang out too long - you'll overhear talk about who all the local drunks are.
The coffee and chai were stellar. Â The vibe was creepy. Â Really ugly, dark decor and did I say creepy? Â Â I'd recommend it to anyone who wants to show off their body piercings to an appreciative audience. Â Out there. Â Really. Â It's Halloween 365 days a year in this place. Â A kind of artsy hideousness that vacated the coasts in the 90's. Â Unfriendly staff. Â Lighten up guys. Â It gets better.
Review Source:The styrofoam thing must've been a one-off, and maybe it was because I had a coat on and was standing there. Â Never happened again. Â The atmosphere is absolutely lovely, and love their coffee and chai tea. Â I haven't seen a performance there, though, so I wouldn't know what to tell you about that.
Review Source:A lot of my reviews are given 5 stars not because I'm an easy sell, but because I often only post a review of a place if I love it and Monks is no different. I travel and am in two or three new places a day but only post once in awhile. I lived in Asia for three years and one of the best parts was the amount of places that served both coffee and alcohol. Monks does this and has that shaded front porch that makes even the hottest of days enjoyable. It's open late which I love and is tough to find in smaller towns. I was bummed I wasn't in town longer so I could be a regular here. Grant's tomb is East on the 20 about a 1/2 hour into Illinois as well.
Review Source:Great prices and a wonderful ambiance, too. I enjoy that kids are allowed there until 9 pm (so my family and I could take my 14-year-old niece to an "adult" place where we could all relax and have a drink to wind down.)
If you're lucky, you'll have Beth as your bartender. Very friendly and offers good recommendations for your drinks based on your taste preferences -- there's a lot of great options to choose from; both beer and nonalcoholic! :)
Stopped in for a quick drink on the way back to our B&B. What a cool place! Small but cozy; even though it's tight we wouldve spent more time reading there if possible.
Coffee was great but not hot; it was kept in a 'pump' dispenser, which doesn't insulate well. Otherwise, loved my time here.
Yelp must not be big in Dubuque yet because I know that Monk's would generate a lot more positive ratings. Monk's is one of my favorite coffee places in Dubuque. It's so versatile. During the day, it's a perfect escape from the house to sip a cup of joe and read or relax with a laptop, or to swing by to have a good conversation with a pal. At night, it gets a little busier with some interesting characters to observe, and some nights they have live music. The one barista is a jolly guy who always has a smile and a laugh waiting for his customers. The prices are fair and the coffee in all forms is good. The Mexican Spiced Hot Chocolate is one of my favorites, as well. They have a lot of good craft beer options, too. This place is a definite gem in Dubuque.
