A few weekends I tried Montage - the new cafe in the building that houses Sub Cat recording Studios. Located on West Street, adjacent to the Red House Arts center, it's owned by the folks who operate Roji Tea House - one of my go-to places when I want to hang out and chill with friends outside the house.

Montage has a stark and modern design and lacks the cozy feel that I was looking for. Perhaps with some art work on the walls and more people there it will feel different (we were the only patrons.) They offered some sandwiches and wraps that were pre-made, as well as some desserts. I opted for a small cappuccino with a double shot of espresso and a bar of dark chocolate - my buddy got peppermint tea.

When I ordered I asked if their cappuccinos were made with a double shot and was told yes. The bill came to $11.50 with tax - in my opinion a bit steep for what we got, although the quality was good (not stellar but good.)  When I inquired about the charge it turns out that they charged $3.65 for the small cappa but added $1 for an extra shot (so no - they don't make their drinks with a double shot unless you pay extra.) I wanted a drink that would be roughly 8 oz of total liquid in the cup including milk and espresso and didn't want extra foam scooped in, but they couldn't really grasp what I was asking for. They use a super auto machine and the person working appeared fairly clueless about espresso drinks. I just took what I got and although it wasn't bad  I've had far better. They raved about the chocolate bars but it was the standard specialty chocolate bars you find most places - no better than a Lindt and close to $4 each.

I like the fact that they are open late and the cappuccino was notably better than what Bittersweet - one of the other late night adult "non- bar" places offers - but I was hoping for a bit more in terms of atmosphere. They've been open for only a month or so and I think with time they will find their groove. I will try them again.

This place has a lot of potential. Being that it is such a new establishment I will keep try and my criticism on a constructive level.

The decor is pretty stark. The tables and benches are very cool but something about how they're set up- cafeteria style. There is no artwork of any kind. Which makes it for an uninviting atmosphere. Especially since it sort of has a gallery feel to it. There are so many really talented local artists that could fill up the wall space no problem.

The two times I went there, there was no music playing. Again adding to an overall uncomfortable atmosphere. The bubble tea I got the first time was just alright. Nothing spectacular and nothing terrible. The iced tea I got the second was also just alright. The espresso sadly was the worst espresso I've ever had. Charred to the point of tasting so sour, I couldn't bring myself to even swallow. Both times I ordered it took forever. And there were no other customers!

They do have a small sandwich/salad menu which looked appetizing but I have yet to try it.

Maybe this place is way more fun at night when the bar really has a time to show itself. I'm not writing Montage off completely. I think the fact that the West Side is just starting to really become developed has an awful lot to do with the lack of business.

Or maybe it's because this place isn't really as unique as it appears. It's like a mesh of Strong Hearts, Roji and any of the local coffee houses in town-all businesses that are really successful at what they do. Maybe if they really market it as a trendy bar hangout?

Lots of potential for this place. Key word being potential. I'll be sure to check this place out at night.
