This place is amazing, everything was excellent including the service. The food is as good as in any big city, Truckee is very lucky to have this restaurant.

If I was on Death Row my last meal would be from Moody's!  Food was over the top good! All staff was very knowledgeable and very friendly. My husband and I shared everything because it was all so good.  We had the Ahi Poke, Hamachi Duo, Steak and dungeness crab with truffled frites, and the Chef's pasta, all delicious!  Fine dining food with fun relaxed atmosphere at the bar.  Fun music as well.  Thanks Moody's!

    No.

Mediocre food, terrible service.  Disappearing waitstaff. Tourist trap.

I literally had better service and food at Chili's (Chili's for crying out loud!) the next day.

Moody's Bistro Bar & Beats is the happening place in Truckee.  Easy, nice atmosphere, great menu, lovely staff, and great music!  If you are looking for a fun night out, this is the place.  To top it all off, the menu pricing is very reasonable.  Can't go wrong with Moody's. LB

Overpriced.  Mediocre service.  Ordered iced tea, no spoon.  Ordered burger, no ketchup or mustard.  Disappearing wait staff.   Disappointing.

The pros: great waiter and service, nice outdoor courtyard and cozy bar area.
    Also, good wine and cocktails.
The cons:  The food was very disappointing. Beet salad made with endive that was about 2 weeks past it's prime. Calamari that was mostly  deep fried batter and the pasta special that was a plate of dense, doughy nuggets in a mediocre sauce accompanied by sausage.
I've had great food here in the past- what happened?

Ordered the corn-dog appetizer, it was sausage and not hot dog in the middle - caution. The home made ketchup was great! For the main course, ordered a steak, got a thumbs up.

Traveling from Utah. Stopped for home made squash soup, hamburger with hand cut fries, and simple but fresh house salad. All excellent. Server was very helpful and recommended a great hotel which we would never wpuld have tried otherwise.

I just had the pizza with bacon, sausage, caramelized onions and olives and it was maybe one of the best pies I have ever had. Moodys retuned their menu and it is exceptional.

This place has amazing food and drink! Burger was amazing and the steak was the best steak that's ever entered my mouth! Done deal, going back for my birthday dinner tomorrow. :)

Where do I even begin? The atmosphere, service, and food was all incredible.  We sat at the bar where our friendly server Sarah promotly greeted us.  We started with the Yellow Fin Ahi Poke which was incredibly fresh and delicious.  I also had a tasty bloody Mary, which was made from scratch. For lunch we split the bert salad and the Wild Mushroom & goat cheese thin crust pizza.  The salad was simple and hit the spot. But this pizza; I can't begin to explain how amazing it was.  Honestly one of the best pizzas I've ever had.  If you're in Truckee, you have to come here

Excellent. Best pork chop I have ever eaten!  The crab toast & steak tartare were delicious. Interesting pizzas on the menu but did not have. Great drinks & wine list. GO.

    What a find!

We came here because the little beer shack 100ft past said they had one of their beers on tap here and we wanted to try it before buying a growler.  The food was great.  The deviled eggs are overpowered by the truffle.  Deviled eggs are great just the way they are, no need to french 'em up.  The Calamari was like crack.  the breading they use has magical powers to it.  Unfortunately we never made it back to the beer shack for the growler, but we shall return, to both.

I loved Moody's.  Great staff, great menu, great food.

I was in Truckee at lunchtime.  I had a salad of roasted beets, arugula, and sugared walnuts and other great stuff.  It was perfect.  I made the mistake of adding grilled "snapper."  It wasn't necessary, actually detracted from the salad and added $7.00 to the bill.

Oh, I almost forgot, the music in the background was terrific -- R&B from the late '60s and early '70s. Mickey Mouse cartoons from the 1930s were playing on he wall.  Very,  very cool.

I liked Truckee, but liked Moody's even more.  It's worth going out of your way for.

Nice place to get out to for a change, I'm not a fan of the menu as there are a lot of sandwiches, pasta and pizza, I always get an appetizer or a salad because of food allergies. The servers are nice and sitting at the bar with live music was fun.

I haven't been back to this Moody's for years. Last I came here it was the old Moody's format. Don't really know if it's really different then it was before, or just a name change. I came for a business lunch with a client the other day. This was his choice since I didn't have anything in particular in mind. Looking at the menu prices have gone up, OK , I'm on my expense account, but still. We started with the crab toast appetizer for $14. It was OK not off the charts, but in my mind I was thinking, "is that all we get?" OK, I have to keep talking business. For the lunch entrees we both had the pub burger for $14 and $5 for fries. Almost $20 for a burger and fries ... you get the picture. The food was good, maybe an 8 out of 10 on a burger scale. I was just glad my company is paying for this! I kept my smiley face on as this was still about business and not a food excursion. I'll have to look for some better places to go in Truckee. Oh, yeah, didn't see Paul McCartney here either.

My wife and I decided to take her parents out for lunch at Moody's since we all live in Truckee and wanted to support a local business. When we arrived the place was not busy at all but we had to wait on our server for several minutes before we could order our drinks. When she arrived at the table she was obviously unhappy to be there and treated us accordingly so. When the food came out my father in law didn't receive his due to some sort of mistake and was made to wait another approx. 10 min. Here's where it starts to get good...Not one time did our server return after giving my father in law his meal. none of the drinks at our table were ever refilled during our time there and at the end when the server returned to collect the plates I asked if I could get a refill and she literally rolled her eyes at me! At which point I replied that it was ok and don't worry about the refill. She left the check and never returned, even to collect the check. I finally had to go find someone else who worked there to cash us out. Unbelievably bad service, right? So I get home and think about it for a couple hours and pick up the phone to talk to a manager about what happened. When I explained the situation and how I didn't want to get anyone in trouble but that we had terrible service she insisted on sending me a gift card. I explained that wasn't what I was after but that I would appreciate the gesture. She took down all my info and said to expect a letter in the mail soon. That was a few months ago and I've never received any sort of correspondence,  which completes the ultimate cycle of poor service. In closing the food is middle of the road and high priced, but the customer service is the worst I've ever experienced anywhere. Spend your hard earned money elsewhere. Not recommended

I've officially eaten at Moody's three times - twice on my last trip to Truckee. First off, this place is fun - they have a great atmosphere, live music (I think maybe only on weekends, I have only been on a weekend) and a friendly small town feel.
The menu is delicious without being pretentious - they have everything from killer ahi to house made corn dogs - both DELICIOUS!!!  I've eaten the Ahi - every time! - corn dogs, crab toast (buttery goodness), calamari with the most amazing sweet/spicy sauce, pork belly - and that might be all of the apps I have tested. . . .All have been some of the most delicious selections. . .
I split an entree of the pork chop the last time I was there - yummy! Pork chop, brussel sprouts with bacon, polenta . . . .makes my mouth water just thinking of it.  The home-made ice cream is awesome but I usually stuff myself too silly to eat it so I wait for someone else to get it and try to steal some bites. Heaven.
As for drinks - I tend to like to try a lot of different drinks. I haven't ordered any of their specials but always order my seemingly high maintenance drinks and they always seem to make them. . . .For example - I went through a moscow mule phase - not on the menu but they made it without batting an eye or giving me a hard time.  Also on my list is a French 75 - Gin, Champagne, Lemon juice and sugar.  In the last month of my obsession with these I have had to either select another drink (because the restaurant didn't know how to make it or refused to make it) or I have to list all the ingredients and amounts and hope for the best.  In a world of smartphones I think this is ridiculous. . . .a french 75 is a bit obscure but has to be at least as old as the manhattan.  Needless to say Moody's took my order without batting an eye and produced my beverage - voila! In love.
I have also been back for brunch and had the eggs benedict. I believe they make the hollandaise in-house and it is phenomenal. . . . . .I highly recommend hitting them up for breakfast. Be prepared to wait for them to brew a fresh pot of coffee - but oh boy is it a great cup!
I hope you enjoy this place as much as I did - will definitely be back!

Recommended! Our table unanimously agreed the food was all excellent and our server Johnny was great too.
    Drinks: hummingbird and mojito
Food: truffled deviled eggs, corn dogs, tomato cart with burrata, beef tartare, grilled cheese with fries, homemade ice cream sampler.

Avoid the negative energy of this place. We stopped by on a Saturday night AND a Sunday afternoon, thinking maybe a staff change would improve things. Crabby hosts. Crabby people behind the bar. Just awful. It would've been funny if it hadn't been so sad. Watching a nice employee who was trying to be helpful to customers get yelled at was the low point ...

    Ripoff - Watch Your Wallet

Was charged $2.00 extra for each glass of wine and $2.00 extra for burger than was listed on menu. When I questioned the bartender I was told "that's what's in the computer" and he wouldn't even give me a menu to confirm while I was there. However I knew I was right and confirmed the overcharge by checking the menu online. Imagine how often they are getting away with this and how much they are ripping off the public. Despicable business practice.

The restaurant is pricey and the salmon piece of fish was so small they should hide.
Big disappointment for a nice meal too pricey and portions miniscule.
    Food ok and nothing wonderful

well.... 5 stars to whoever upload the picture of these restaurant!

What I found was nothing compare to that wonderful picture of a red nice ambience restaurant looking...

Instead when I entered nobody was there to receive me ( which I will understand if the place was full... but there was actually only two table occupied at the moment).. In addition, it was I believe 4:14-4.30 when we came.. ( i know very early dinner!) we were driving all day, and since we  were very tired, we decide to just go for dinner.. However, are "friendly" waitress informed us that they're still serving lunch menu, and on the same time i guess there was a Happy Hour going on.. ( which was only one or two items for $10 bucks), but if we wanted to order from the menu, we need it to wait till 5! REALLY!?? half an hour?? yeap.. they didn't honor it... and there wasn't anything in the lunch menu that looked good to me ( plenty of sandwiches.. common item for lunch menu..of course!)

Bottom of line, Lunch didnt impress me at all.. i don't even remember what I ordered!, not coming again... would rather experience another place..

PS: black and white cartoons showing on a projector was pretty original, even though was not of my personal taste!

This is a small, cute, local spot where everyone seems to know each other. Similar to a Cheers atmosphere, but a bit more classy :)
The place can fill up quick on a Friday night. We grabbed a spot at the bar and had some dinner. I was glad we got there early cuz the place was buzzing by 7:30. Everyone was getting there a little early for a band coming in from San Francisco. The menu was amazing. Great Italian pastas, steaks, chicken with arugula and a creamy broth sauce, and pork chops. The appetizer menu features home made corn dogs. Pretty cool.
The staff is quirky and friendly. Our bartender was nick-named the "Sherif" cuz he was jokingly in charge of the sports games played behind the bar. We had fun with him and he was a character with us, all adding to a fun time in a new spot. We were just tourists and really felt at home in this place. The girl next to us owned the shop next door. Locals kept flooding through the door chit chatting with folks at the bar. It was a great atmosphere. Very welcoming and homey.
Our dinners were right up there with comfort food and being that we were coming in this place in the cold of winter it was all the better.

OMG deliciousness!!!! I cannot get enough! I have not been disappointed, palatially speaking! Tuna tartar, jalapeño and goat cheese soup, salad, bison burger, crab and Mac and cheese! It's making my mouth water now!

Also, there's the potential to see a celebrity or two. Last time I was there sat next to a world famous ski racing couple and Paul McCartney dined and sang there once too!

Five starts for service, but unfortunately we can't rate service separate from food.

The service here was amazing.  Even on an extremely busy Thanksgiving weekend the hostess and server went out-of--their-way to take care of us.

Food, in a word, was "eh".  We ordered the steak (filet, ordered medium) special and the river salmon.  Both arrived looking beautiful, but were raw inside and had to be sent back. Took the chef 30 minutes to get the food out the second time, so long in fact that we were sure they'd tossed out the original and started over.  (Which of course was not the case - our original food returned looking far less beautiful.)

I did taste good (even after all that), but now it's 3:00 am and we are both awake with indigestion.  (Not-so-good for date night.)

The place itself is pretty cool, and from other reviews it seems we may have just been there on the "real" chef's night off.  Not sure how soon we'll return to try again though.

Since I am the mayor on Four Square and the Duchess on Yelp, I guess I better write a review!
After a rocky start, Moody's Bistro Bar & Beats is top on my list. They are locavores and have a goal of making everything in house from corn dogs to ice cream made by one of the best waiters.
They have a balance wine list: wines on tap, house wine by the liter and then fancy delish bottles. Always a seasonal drink special. We almost always get the house wine but last night tried a Syrah on tap, yum!

Deviled eggs are divine! I usually end up with the home made pasta special, last night's was ridiculous interesting seasonal combination of textures and tastes: braised melt in your mouth pork with goat cheese that melted throughout, pomegranate kernels and squash. Polenta fries are light crispy.
The front bar is relaxed with a spot for music and a big screen playing old school cartoons and shows like old Mickey Mouse and Little Rascals. The dining room is more intimate and they also have a private room where last night they had a dinner rehearsal.

We live downtown and walk by 2 closer restaurants to chose Moody's.

This is my 2nd visit to Moody's....and, I wasn't disappointed either time! Believe it or not, I ordered the grilled cheese sandwich along with a cup of tomato soup ~ and it was delish. My son ordered their burger, and couldn't quit raving about it. It was a good quality meat, cooked (and, received) as ordered, and was a nice thick burger. On a previous lunch visit, we ordered their fish sandwich...also, delish.
It's my new favorite restaurant when visiting Truckee...and, I would highly suggest others to stop by and give it a try!!

Needless to say, our experience at Moody's left us Very Moody.

    The ambiance is very nice.
The Service left much to be desired
Our Waitress was Makenzi (sp?).  She never told us her name, had to find it on the receipt.  When we didn't order Cocktails, she left us, waiting to place our orders for dinner for easily 10 minutes.

The food was alright, our appetizers and main courses were timed well, the food came out of kitchen at the proper temperature. The steak Tartar was too salty, mostly from the excess Parmeasan cheese, which is not the 'classic' way of preparing Steak Tartar as the menu claims.  The toasted baguette slices was dry, tasteless, and salty.
The Caesar salad was delicious, as were the amazing Olives (from their bar bites).

The Fettuccine sounded and smelled amazing, but their "House Pancetta" was more akin to sausage then to actual Pancetta. It arrived, without a spoon to help twirl up the noodles, and I had to wait 5 minutes to find our waitress to ask for parmesan cheese.  Then, thanks to her ability, which other waiters had displayed fine skills, managed to get more cheese over myself and the table than on my pasta.  The peas were tasteless, with a /delightlfully/ mealy texture.

We were fortunate enough that whenever we tried to find Makenzi ( And failed, often) there was a young man, wearing glasses, who was kind enough to step up to the plate.

By the end of the meal, Makenzi seemed to realize her tip was in serious danger and tried to charm us.  After a long drive up from Los Angeles, all we had wanted was a decent meal and decent service.  Needless to say, Makenzi failed to provide.  I hope others have a better experience with other servers at Moody's.

I'm pleased with the menu change.
    Service is good.
This used to be *the* place in Truckee for a proper cocktail.
Now, the drinks are so sweet that you can only have one and they shake drinks that are supposed to be stirred.
I ordered a top-shelf Manhattan and it came so watered down by shaking that it tasted like a bottom-shelf Manhattan.
    The world weeps.
    The terrorists have won.

    TWO WORDS; PORK BELLY
This place is amazing!! Spectacular food and top notch customer service. Let's just say this; my group and I discovered this place accidentally after skiing at Northstar and my friend and I  want to drive back up just to eat there again. Who would have imagined Truckee? If you are a foodie which apparently we are (new discovery) you will have died and gone to heaven. We tried really random things but everything was mouth watering and delicious, including the warm foccacia they bring you straight from the oven. This is what we had that we couldn't stop raving about; Truffled Deviled Eggs with Tarragon, Aioli and Sweet Paprika,Maple glazed Berkshire Farms Pork Belly with Comice Pear Salad,Fresh Mozzarella, Basil and San Marzano Tomato Sauce,Durham Ranch Bison Burger Choice of Cheese, Lettuce, Tomato Yum, Yum,

I also really love the decor and ambiance of this place. It's stylish, whimsical, and I felt very important :) Can't wait to go back

Haven't been here in awhile and didn't know ahead of time that the menu had changed.  Still good, but I miss the onion strings and most importantly, the s'mores :(

Veggie burger was good and fries were yummy. But, please Moody's, reconsider bringing back the delicious s'mores.

This place is a great little reasonably priced bar/restaurant in the heart of downtown Truckee.

The happy hour is wonderful and has some food on the menu, including one of their pizzas which are truly delicious.

The bar area is a little tight but still very cozy and the bartender was exceedingly friendly.

The pizza, my god the pizza. These medium sized pies are enough for one hungry person or two snacky people. I had the smoked mozz and roasted garlic pizza and it was like a thousand little flavor monsters attacking my tongue in a delightful sort of way.

I like this place and will certainly be back

I am making another review because things have changed since my last review in February.

The lounge area were the bands play is changed up to where there are more tables and the seating isn't in that awkward line along a wall.

Unfortunately they no longer have the crab toast on the appetizer menu and was super bummed, but they have a few replacements. Instead we ordered the pork belly appetizer... I was speechless! It was in a honey glaze with a side of field greens with apples. Deeelisshhhuuusss!

The bread that Moody's serves each table has to be one of tastiest. Great for the palate, bad on the gut!

We ordered a 1/2 liter of a delicious Kamiji Pinot Noir and the flatbread with three different dips: hummus, eggplant/caviar, and marinara. The Eggplant/Caviar dip was my boyfriend and my favorite of the three, but feel the marinara could be replaced with something else.

The pork belly was so delicious that we ordered another!!! Yum!!

When we come to this place we can usually order off the appetizer and small plate sections, have some drinks and be happy... That definitely hasn't changed.

We finished our evening at Moody's with some homemade ice cream made by our own waiter CRAIG! There were several flavors, but we went with the Ginger. This flavor was delectable and could have really went home with a pint of the stuff! Thanks Craig! (I want to try the Chai Tea next time).

Moody's may have changed the menu and the seating, and even though I will miss the crab toast, this is a good example of change being good.

I went here on valentines day with a date and i have to say I was really disappointed.   I have eaten at Moodys on numerous occasions in the last 3 years and always had great food and good service by Tahoe standards.  But the revamping of the restaurant  seems to have taken all of the flair out of the menu.  The food choices are way more mainstream, lack creativity, and basically seem like they are trying to target the average tourist family of 5, rather than the foodie.  I understand this marketing strategy, however its a disappointment to those of us who live in Truckee and have virtually no access to creative and inspiring culinary establishments.

We had a steak tartar that was not ground fine enough and was very chewy and way too much mustard.   A cesar with anchovies that tasted like they were out of a can.  A pasta dish with a braised meat sauce that was good and a pork chop that was burnt and dried out, served with some good polenta.  Don't try the house wine!  tasted like carlo rossi.  I really wish they had not taken the charcuterie plate of f the menu as it was one of the true gems of Moody's.  Also they used to feature a lot of wild game which was another unique quality that has been streamlined and replaced with typical protein choices.  The kitchen smoked out the whole restaurant while we were dining, and they had to open the doors to the dining room to air it out during a pretty cold night, didn't really bother me but an indicator that the back of the house staff is not on top of their game any more.

When i was leaving i noticed an intent to sell in the window.  I have a feeling that Mark is no longing at the wheel and it really shows.  Its sad to see one of the few remaining dining gems in Truckee disappear.   I suggest trying out Stella if your looking for innovative, well executed cuisine in town.  also don't be deceived by the high rating, there are several other recent reviews that speak the truth that have been hidden!

Went back this week. Got a Happy Hour burger.  Burger was fine. Came with fresh lettuce and a few slices of tomato. Perfectly medium. Nice. Good fries. Fresh. Not from Sysco. Wife didn't want to try anything.

Waiter forgot about us before the check. Actually, couldn't find him to get the check. Busboy helped us, but it was still 5 minutes after we finally asked the busboy for assistance and then found out the check was wrong. Was charged $14 vice the posted $10 for the burger. Same thing for drinks. There's supposed to be a Happy Hour discount, but we didn't get it at first. Waiter fixed it up. I think. Came out to a 20% difference, so it's a significant error to me.

I wanted to give them the benefit of any doubt from last time, but I don't think I'll go back . I don't want to go to a place that's hit or miss with food or service. There are too many better choices in Truckee.
