This is the local bar on the island. The bar tenders pour healthy shots. It gets kind of rowdy at night, so it might not be for everyone. This is the kind of place a night worker goes at 11:30 a.m. to tie one off after third shift. If that is your kind of thing, than you should definitely stop here.

That's right...5 stars! Here's why: The atmosphere is just right if you are looking to hangout and have some great food and drinks with family or friends! The term dive is used in the most loving way because what that really means in this instance is that this is the year round local hangout.
Great for dancing and spirited weekday evening theme nights such as "Trivia Tuesday" where the place erupts in laughter as you  and your team at your table answer weekly news trivia! followed by drinks and dancing...Good fun!
The food is GREAT! The staff treat you like family and you can kick back and relax , feel at home and be yourself.

What I like about the Mustang is that this is the dive bar on the island. However, there is history here with this place. At one time, this was about the only damn thing open in the middle of the winter on the island. Doud's store, the post office and the Mustang were it in the winter ! There was once even a pilot who crashed his plane out on the ice in the dark and walked up to the Mustang all bloody.

This is were the locals who live on the rock go to eat.... it is basically inexpensive compared to the rest of the island. The Mustang is a cool little bar-restaurant.

Inside it is all wood and I seem to always order their cheeseburger. The Mustang burger just seems to always be the same and has a thing to it. It is neither big nor small, but with it's grilled onions, it is righteous.

I am a big fan of their bar food and the atmosphere is timeless.

On an island full of mediocre and subpar overpriced restaurants on the main drag, we stumbled on this restaurant after almost giving up on finding something that wasn't a tourist trap.

While other restaurants were frantic and jammed with patrons, the Mustang was pleasantly laid back and calm. The Tigers game was on the big screen (it is a bar after all) and the AC was thankfully cranking. The staff were all pleasant and got us our drinks and took our orders quickly, but we never felt that we were being pressured to get out.  We have 3 kids and the menu had many options for kids and the staff accommodated us very well.

We ordered a salad and a full slab of ribs to share with our family of 5. The salad was entree sized but even then it was still huge!  Very nice salad with quality greens and nicely prepared. The house made dressing was also very good.

I'm a rib connoisseur and didn't know what to expect when we ordered the ribs, but we were assured by our server that they were very good.  I was very pleasantly surprised with how good the ribs were. They were boiled, but the cooks managed to not let this overwhelm the cooking processes of the ribs. The meat was tender, but not falling off the bone and had good texture. It was very nicely seasoned and the sauce was good.  If one was to compare these ribs to a serious rib joint they'd come in a respectable 2nd place.

In short, it's apparent that the kitchen staff at the Mustang really know what they are doing. They use quality ingredients and they know how to prepare some great dishes cooked and presented very nicely.  If you're looking for a non-fancy, down to earth place to eat on the Island, the Mustang would be a great pick, even for a family with kids.

The Mustang Lounge is a great place on Mackinac Island to get your dance on...if that's what you're in the mood for.

We went this past Friday night for dinner on the island to cap off a great week in St. Ignace.  My girlfriend and I walked the island and decided that the Mustang Lounge looked interesting.  The menu wasn't bad and prices weren't as inflated as other restaurants on the island.  Unfortunately this place is not worth your time or money.

When we first walked in to the bar, no one greeted us.  There are two entrances to the bar and neither had a host station so you pretty much wandered around until someone noticed you--which was the first sign that we should have left.  When we walked in, the servers were all hanging out by the kitchen door chatting away.  We walked right by them to look to see if there was a host station at the other door and they said nothing to us.  When we stopped back around to ask were the host station was, they acted as if we interrupted their conversation.

We were seated at a table and given menus.  The waitress took our order without writing anything down and of course the entrees were wrong.  I absolutely hate when servers don't write anything down for this very fact.  Shannon ordered a honey glazed chicken sandwich and a I had the special of the day, 16oz prim rib with a baked potato.   We also ordered onion rings as an appetizer.

The onion rings:  They weren't horrible, but they weren't great either.  They came out hot and somewhat tasty.  What pissed us off is when we had to ask for small plates.  The waitress just plopped the onion rings on the table and left.  When asked for small plates she just shot us a look as if to say "really?".

Next came the entrees.  From what I was told, the sandwich was okay, but looking at it, it wasn't appealing at all.  The chicken breast was really pale and didn't have a lot of color on it.  It came out with a side of soggy french fries that were piping hot.  They weren't crisp at all.

The prime rib sucked.  I ordered it rare and she responded that all the prime rib was to be served medium rare.  Why even bother serving prime rib if you aren't going to be able to serve it properly or to the request of the customer.  I reluctantly agreed hoping that it would come out more rare.  It was medium well.  The cut was thick so the portion size was right, but the majority of it was cooked through.  On top of the over cooked prime rib was gravy.  No, not au jus, gravy.  The menu said au jus, but this stuff was so thick you'd think it was chowder.  It completely ruined the meal.  I had to load up the prime rib with horseradish to choke it down so gravy taste wasn't overwhelming.  Such a disappointment.  The mandatory side item was the baked potato.  I wasn't offered an option of butter/sour cream etc.  Nope, it came with melted cheese and chopped bacon automatically.  You would think that if you ordered a baked potato that it would be plain and that you would request items to put on.  The last thing that finally set me off about the food was that it also came with a vegetable medley--out of the frozen bag.  Yup, frozen vegetables were your side.  How do I know?  Because I bought the same bag mix at Sam's Club to try once and it was exactly the same.  What a rip off.

The quality of the service is completely lacking.  The staff seem to want to bs and hangout rather than do their job.  Some are eating meals between checking tables while others are drinking beer at the bar.  Its no wonder they just don't care.  They have an outdoor patio with that has four tables and  huge speakers.  The guests came in several times to ask the staff to turn down the music.  When the bar finally grudgingly turned down the music and the customer returned to their table, the staff just shooked their head in disgust and that is all you needed to know about what they think about customers.  Its their hangout and you're in the way.

When the bill arrived, $45 , I looked at the bottom of the receipt and what did I see?  A charge of 50 cents for horseradish.

You had me at PBR on draft and deep fried pickles. Great atmosphere for drinks and appetizers. The service was helpful and friendly.

We went for a late afternoon snack & beer since they had a patio.  Overpriced just like everything on the island but the artichoke dip was REALLY tasty.  The service was good too.

Great place to grab a bite and have a beer. So a couple of tourists don't like it on Yelp? Well... All of the locals eat and drink at "The 'Stang." I was in there yesterday (Good Friday) and I had the Whitefish fry. Everything was very good. If you go in the winter...and you get lucky, you might get to try Tony's (the owner's) pot roast-- some of the best comfort food I've ever had.

I have been visiting the Island for years and I love this little bar. It's a great place for cheaper drinks and solid bar grub. We always meet a few local Islanders and it's always a blast. The bar staff is really laid back and cool. It's the closest thing to a dive bar on the island.
There are always folks getting their drink on at anytime of the day at this little gem. They also have a really good hotdog basket with fries. The breakfast is not bad either.
I always have a need to Hang at the Stang when I visit.

    Cheers

Perhaps it is a little unfair to write this review about the Mustang when it was the Monday of the finish of the Mac Race. They had just had thousands of boaters and friends getting to the Island looking for fun and to spend money. It is absolutely understandable that they would have their guest DJ start playing exceptionally annoying sound effects to push us out of the restaurant, that the wait staff came over many times to, rather obviously, make it know that we should leave, etc... You know what why not.

When you are faced with a large table that would like to get some food and you know you have a DJ going on and are expecting to open up your dance floor tell us, don't seat us and than act like we kicked your puppy. I will say that our waitress was rather a good sport through it all, she could see what her co workers were doing and seemed to try to deflect the complete nonsense away from us.

Aside from the rushed service the food was just OK.
