We went to the Bakery side of this place and were not really impressed. Admitted ... it was almost closing time but the staff was not friendly and the selection of pastries and cakes was very limited. It looks like a factory (bakery) inside and the seating area outside is also a little plain ... just like the muffins and scones we tried.
Review Source:This place is odd.
Food was ok, but took forever. Drinks were fine.
Damn... the decor is over the top and the place has a pretentious feel. WTF is up with the stupid statue? It's like some rich mafia wife from NJ decorated the place.
Why three stars?... The walk up bakery counter around back has some great fresh baked goods.
I went to "My Florist" for my birthday brunch today around 12pm.
The service was less than favorable. I was very shocked and surprised at how bitchy and negligent our server was. There were very few people in the restaurant and it took this lady FOREVER to bring us our drinks. When she did, we found out that we would have another guest joining us. she gave us our drinks with attitude and basically told us to figure it out... in result I had 3 people from my party moving these huge marble top tables
I placed my brother's breakfast order for him (he was around the corner making a phone call) and the waitress was quick to make a snide remark about the calorie/fat content of what he was ordering, and then proceeded to list off the things that were unhealthy about his meal.
Our food took longer than it should have to reach our table. Our server left us hanging for quite sometime without refiling mimosas, coffee, waters.
we gave her our credit cards to cash out, and waited another 15-20 minutes for her to bring them back.
Food was delicious, as usual, but the service was SO terrible, I'm giving it 2 stars....
The service today sucked, and I will not host or suggest future birthdays/gatherings here.
very disappointed.
Just had a great breakfast, egg with croissant simple but nice, the croissant is really flakey and fresh not greasy. This place does fresh pastries and bread daily. You can pop in and get a fresh loaf of bread or a quick pastry and coffee to go at the counter. Â They also have a full bar so you can enjoy a evening with friends, great ambiance. Cheers!
Review Source:I give the bakery 5 stars and the restaurant 2. The pastries are crazy good (except the scones). They used to have good scones but they lost one of their pastry chefs and he took his awesome pina colada scone recipe with him. Anyways, go for the pecan rolls or the meyer lemon danish, that's their best in my opinion, but all the pastries are good. Bread is great too.
I keep trying to give the restaurant a chance but they come up short every time. They also used to have good drinks but they changed the menu and now they are smaller and still the same price. The mac n cheese is ok but usually way too many onions, everything there is just blah. The servers seem to try really hard and we have always had great service, but it seems like the chef or someone in the back is an ass or just doesn't know what they are doing.
We got an heirloom tomato caprese salad, sounds good right, came with the green heirlooms which I think have some the best flavor, however they were hard as a rock. Ok, heirloom tomatoes, even the green ones can be under ripe so we sent it back explaining this to them and they returned with the salad and it had cheapo red tomatoes. We tried to explain and they just acted like we were the dumb ones.
Again, if it was just the restaurant I'd never go back.
If baked goods were flowers and you wanted to sit next to a giant Oscar statue, you might think of naming your restaurant My Florist. Fortunately, I'm more interested in food, so I can ignore an odd name and an equally odd statue.
For fresh-baked bread, this place gives my appetite a rise. Even if you don't have time to stop and indulge, you can get your doughliciousness to go. Loaves, rolls, and even pastries can be stuffed into a sack probably consumed before you get home.
Recently I wanted to treat a friend to brunch, so we stopped here. It was fantastic, as per usual. The produce was fresh. Dishes are prepared carefully. While service isn't the best I've experienced, it's good enough to keep me fed and happy.
So, while the name and the decor can be confusing, the tastiness of the food is very clear. Perhaps they won that Oscar statue with their chocolate croissant?
In short, ignore the name. Ignore the statue. Just eat the food and, if the pianist is playing, be sure to clap.
wow, just wow. Everything was so delish!
The ambiance is a little cheestastic modern, but pay no mind, just taste. MMmmmMmmmMmMM. Yeah that's about right. I order the Port Pouched Pear salad with blue cheese and balsamic vinaigrette, best salad I've ever eaten, and my hubs makes  darn good salads. He was so offended when I bellowed out, "Oh my God this salad is so good. " "Better than mine?" He asked. "Um, yes, yes I think it is." I responded. I couldn't lie, but I so should have. The words just poured from my mouth before I even knew what I had said. Â
Even though I had totally insulted the hubs, he still really enjoyed the Ruben he ordered. The boy ordered the chicken and dumplings and wasn't super thrilled. I tasted it, and I think it was just a bit too refined for his palate. Mmmm you could taste the rosemary and roasted garlic in the chicken broth, it was good. The princess ordered the turkey sandwich with cranberry spicy relish (OMG YUM! jalapenos and cranberries to die for) with Brie on pumpernickel bread, wow, just wow. The bread tasted just cooked, the Turkey freshly baked and I could live off this spicy relish. And the Limosa?!?
Put this place on your "must have lunch with friends or a date here" list. Definitely coming back sans offspring.
Really good food, even better cappuccino, but the service will disappoint I'm afraid. A bit on the slow side, even when they are slow - and the "manager" is a bit distracted. We actually tried to book a rehearsal dinner here, but the manager neither called back (after multiple attempts). We finally made arrangements to meet in person with one of his staff, and then came back at that time. He was 1/2 hour late, acted very distracted mumbling something about his computer, and then proceeded to act only mildly interested in a party of 35 for a Thursday night. Needless to say we went elsewhere. We don't really have much interest in going back.
If you have tons of time, and want to spend it waiting on food from somewhat less than friendly staff, give them a try. At least the food will be good.
I will give them more stars for their fresh breads and pastries (they are a bakery), but I really get the impression that they are more interested in the drinking crowd.
First of all, this place is gorgeous!!!! the decor is really cute!
I heard it was a bakery but I never thought there was a full bar in it!!!
I came here with my boyfriend, his mom and his brother and we had a couple of appetizers and drinks.
All their bruschetta choices are amazing, highly recommended!
Great spot over all, I'd love to come back soon
There are definitely positives and negatives to consider when evaluating My Florist. It seems to be kind of a divisive place. I remember, I had a special event dinner there and one member of my party seemed to just HATE the piano music. We only barely persuaded him not to complain to the staff.
The positives are the wine prices, and the always-cheap mimosas, and the hours. If you keep late hours, and you find yourself wanting a meal at 9:30 in Ventura, it's this place or fast food, really. Denny's.... Carrows... yuck. Entrees at those places are almost as expensive as the ones at My Florist, but much less skillfully prepared. So, it's a lifesaver for that.
On the other hand, their portions could be bigger or perhaps the dishes a little more nicely presented or accompanied to fulfill the gourmet expectations the menu establishes, and the service can be very ...sparse. I go for brunch with my girlfriends sometimes and we have to keep after the waitress for coffee and cream, kind of a lot.
On the other other hand, it's a very nice atmosphere if you're not enraged by blue or pianos. I quite like breakfast on the patio.
One of the other reviewers here complained about the skin on her brie not being removed. I hate two things that are happening with that: people acting entitled to their ignorance and people making Ventura seem uncultured. You might just as well complain that your meal didn't come with a toy.
So, it's not perfect, and it seems to often fall short of expectations for people, but in reality, it's a very reasonable joint.
No its not a florist,
The vibe in this old Goodwill store is wonderful. Sort of a retro feel with clean lines and great tunes. The dinner menu has some interesting suggestions and I ordered the ahi tartar and french onion soup cup. Both were tasty, Disappointed that they did not have the wine i chose from their menu as well as a few other items were out of stock and it was 6:00pm on a Saturday! My suggestions is not to have it on the menu if you don't have it available, simple as that. Service was great our waitress was happy and attentive.
Service is almost everything, and when the only interaction between the service team and a guest is the purchase point for some pastries, you would hope that an establishment could flawlessly pull this, but alas this place disappointed in an interaction that took less thank 3 minutes.
We were in the market for fresh pastries early Sunday morning, so we stopped in to pick up some for the family. When we entered it was apparent that this was not their typical "busy" time (around 8:30am). There were only a few people mostly around the bar area. When we inquired about pastries, we were referred to another counter where they have the pastries on display. My wife inquired about a bear claw, and the attendant (I won't compliment him by calling him a "server"), said he didn't know what a bear claw was, rudely BTW, so we ordered a couple of chocolate danish, a cinnamon thing, and an almond croissant. This person's attitude exuded irritation, and we got that we had inconvenienced him by asking to buy our items.
We would not return, and the following days settled for the Starbucks items...
On the way back stopped by one of Craigs recommendation for bfast.
Great place and definitely very hip. We chose to sit outside and enjoyed the nice sun. It was still under a roof but just closer to the sidewalk.
I ordered the very basic two eggs over easy with Canadian Bacon and some toast. Company had the Florist special that wasn't special. It was dry eggs and not very flavorful.
Our sever was so-so but she made up for it later. So it's all good.
What really struck me in this place was their awesome hip decor. A long bar to the right as you walk in. Tables on the left. A giant statue separates the dining area from the worker bee area and the bathroom.
The bathroom is a different story. Awesome decor again! Tricked out with neon lights and a flat tv. Out of this world!
A-OK.
We shared a great Potobella sandwich, and the special $5.00 delicious Bloody Mary.
Would of gotten another star, but the service was very very slow. Don't get me wrong, nice staff, but way to slow for a place that was 1/4 full.
I recommend sitting at the bar. It all happens quicker there.
If the restaurant is anything like the bakery then I'm sure My florist winecafé is to die for.  My review is only about the bakery which is located in the same building but opposite the Oak street entrance. Â
It's an artisan bakery and every time I walk in I always enjoy being inundated with the smell of fresh bread. Â Clearly, this is where they make the bread for the restaurant. Â
The space is neither cafe or restaurant but rather an outlet for anyone who just wants their amazing breads and pastries. Â That being said they do have a coffee dispenser as well as some other drinks you can purchase, and a few places to sit outside of their doors but clearly, this place is no Starbucks, where you can lounge around for hours. Â Well, perhaps you could but I'm not sure that was the intent of their outdoors seating area. Â
It doesn't resemble anything commercial like a Starbucks because their pastries and artisan breads are out of this world better. Â It looks like every roll, pastry and bread loaf is made fresh daily. Â If the person in front of you grabs the last cranberry muffin, that's it they don't have any more to reheat !
Every pastry I've tried has amazing texture; crumbly, crunchy, crusty on the outside and yet moist on the inside with the right amount of sweetness.  Their croissants are to die for perfect.  I imagine this is the kind of croissant you can get at a French café( in France of course).
The pastries with jelly or cream are delicious and not overpoweringly sweet. Â The crown jewel of this place is the bread. Â They make several different types( I think 10 or more, sorry I haven't tried them all)
They make special combination's daily and they make a fixed amount, once that flavor combo is sold, you're out of luck.
My absolute favorite is the cranberry current, walnut bread that's so awesome. Â They have a sourdough that doesn't look like anything you can buy anywhere, with lots of flavor and a wonderful hint of acidity. Â Also, some of these breads are made seasonally, meaning if an ingredient is only available in the summer, it's not made until it's back in season.
My Florist Winecafe & Bakery is truly a wonderful place, especially if you appreciate artisan baking. Â If you've lived on "wonderbread" all of your life give this place a try you may find out that you've been missing something!
Well, we arrived on a Monday evening after searching in vain for a spot to have a glass of wine and some appetizers. The menu looked really delicious with cheese plates and French Onion Soup. By this time we were hungry and I was really looking forward to it.
I found the decor to be pretty cheesy, it looked as though the neon 1980's called and wanted thier SNL piano bar skit back. It was a little too over the top for me, but interesting, though, in a novel sort of way, so it was forgivable if only we had been treated nicely or served at all.
They were understaffed, only 2 people working there & they were crowded with many tables seated, both inside and outside, on the front patio. When we walked in they said hello, but didn't instruct us as to whether we should wait or seat ourselves. I chose a table that needed to be wiped down because it was a really nice comfy seeming spot in the center of the restaurant. We I didn't mind that the table needed wiping, but the bartender, who was also waiting tables, was clearly irked by my choice of sitting at an unclean table and he loudly spoke to his coworker about it. - - - Bad form, mister! I totally heard you & it made me feel VERY unwelcome. We moved to a clean table, but no one ever greeted us or came to take an order. A two-top who was seated AFTER us already had thier drinks, so we left.
BOOOOOOO! I will not be back.
Too bad, we were ready and aiming to drop some $ at this place on some wine. We ended up at another wine bar across town where we experienced the complete opposite: warm friendly prompt service.
My friend and I took a day trip up to Ventura. Â We were looking for a nice place to have lunch and was referred by a friend to dine at this restaurant. Â The moment we walked in we were greeted with a nice reception from the bartender. Â
Nice atmosphere! Â
Once we sat we both ordered the Tuna Sandwich (which I have to say is the best I've ever tasted) It was very tasty! Â The bread was freshly made that morning! Mmmmm Mmmmm Good!! We also had some of the bakeries chocolate chip cookies - EXCUSE ME!!! Â These things are out of this world! Â So addictive - WE WILL BE BACK!!
Overall it was a great experience and I am bookmarking this spot as HOT HOT HOT!!!
I want so badly to like the singer Bjork. Â Her music is great, I love her costumes and her stage shows are very creative . Â But then she opens her mouth and it's over for me. Â I just can't enjoy the shrill sounds that come out of her head.
I feel the same way about My Florist Cafe in Ventura. Â I love the ambiance: the lighting is perfect, they have a fantastic patio with a big-screen projector, and it's the only restaurant here where you'll hear Thievery Corp while you dine (when the piano player takes a break). The half priced wine special isn't bad either... they actually don't mark it up 4x to give you half off. Â I compared the prices to other outlets and they're very reasonable. Â But then the food comes, and on one occasion it all came out at once (cheese plate, salads and entrees together). Â The food isn't terrible so it may sound like I'm making too much out of it, but it doesn't live up to the expectation that the atmosphere builds. Â The only thing I've had there that I would completely avoid is the chicken and dumplings, which come out as a very watery broth with some small dumplings and chicken at the bottom. Â My favorite entree so far has been the meatloaf, which is quite tasty especially when you pair it with the Firestone IPA they have on tap. Â My friend had the lasagna which garnered an "ehh" response, as did the other entrees ordered at the table.
Such a pity because the potential is there to be so much more. Â The wait staff is unpolished and easily confused (except for the bartender that's there most nights) but they're all friendly enough to make up for it. Â I do hope it's still a work in progress... Ventura needs a restaurant like this where the food matches the style.
As a celebration to success in school My Florist was on the dining menu Friday night. It was a first visit after many recommendations and happy comments on the dining experience.
On the bill:
WHITE MISO MEYER LEMON SALMON 18.75
wild atlantic *salmon seasoned and pan-seared atop jasmine steamed sticky rice, seasonal citrus supremes, cucumber & radish relish topped with a white miso meyer lemon emulsion - ABSOLUTELY EXQUISITE! The salmon was cooked perfectly and the grapefruit and sauce surrounding the fluffy rice complimented everything very well.
SEARED TUNA 19.75
line-caught *yellowfin, seasoned & seared, served rare with honey soy, sesame glaze & chili oil on wasabi mashers - I got a taste of my dad's order and I have to say it was very high-quality tasting fish and the  way they were served atop mashed potatoes was a surprisingly delicious compliment! A little bit on the spicy side, but not too much.
Our waiter was friendly, knowledgeable as to what was the right choice of meal, and attentive.
The atmosphere is very Los Angeles club-type with a huge grand piano on a raised portion of the grand dining room. The bathrooms are really unique with neon illumination and a flat screen showing surfing videos.
Overall it was a very pleasing dining experience and I would find myself trying My Florist if it wasn't for the steep menu prices.
The waitress was adorable. I loved the way she described the baby pickles that came with my cheese platter--made me laugh out loud.
My friend and I came here at about 2 in the afternoon--my My Florist cherry was busted.
We ate light: Kristy ordered the scoop salad which is a scoop of Tina over baby greens that are lightly tossed in a sweet vinaigrette. It was heaven for the taste buds
I ordered the chips. FYI: the chips are actualy slices of a baguette served with avo, poco de gallo, sour cream, and cheese melted atop the baguette slices. Mine was not so heavenly on the palette. Â
However, I feel that if I would have said something to my waitress, she would have been glad to find something I was satisfied with.
It's a lovely little place with ample seating and blue mood lighting--oceanish theme. Â I'd definitely return.
I'm visiting my best friend and we are walking around downtown Ventura trying to decide where to have an early dinner...She mentions this place, which she has been wanting to try for a long time. So we decide to give it a shot, even though it's empty. It's cute inside, all art deco inspired and I like the decor. The waitress was really friendly and chatted with us a bit about what was good. I ended up getting the Tuna scoop salad which was one of the best salads I have ever had. I love their vinaigrette, which was sweet and was just the perfect amount. The salad was so fresh!
My friend got the Chips and Salsa, which she didn't love, but agrees that she should come back and try something else.
Overall, I really enjoyed my food and would definitely go here again. :)
This is solely based on one meal...
BREAKFAST:
My dad took me here for breakfast and it was very slow - which one would think we'd be checked on often - not the case unfortunately. Although, the one time I did have to go from the front patio into the place to find a waiter someone came to check on us frequently thereafter. He had the salmon platter which was fantastic - lox, capers mmmmm. I on the othr hand, going for something a lil cheaper had poached eggs and toast. Looking at the price I thought it was going to be more than it was... needless to say I should have gotten the salmon.
This place is awesome! The patio is totally pet friendly... not even a doubt about it! The service was awesome (the bartender made a perfect dirty martini).
Their bottles of wine are 50% off all day and we found a great Stag's Leap for only $39! The food was really good and the atmosphere was totally cool!
A great place for a date.... not too busy, but that was perfect for us :) Quick! Get to this place before it gets too popular!!
This place was sooooo cool! I was thrilled to find a place like this in little ol' Ventura.
It was pretty empty on a Sunday night (maybe it would be a little more hoppin' on a Friday or Saturday night). The waiter greeted us warmly and told us there was a $40 special on a bottle Stag's Leap chardonnay that normally sells for $100! Who could resist!? It was excellent!
The french onion soup was yummy, the mac & cheese was to die for (and served in a cute little flower pot! Clever!) and the crab cakes were oh-so-melt-in-your-mouth good!
I can't wait to go back!
Hit or miss when it comes to attendance but even if they appear empty the kitchen and bar are just as good as when they are slammin'
The food is excellent and artistically presented. Â The staff is hot and friendly in the evenings.
Also a good bar-only time can be had here. Â Great couch-lounges near the grand piano, they don't mind bringing a group and just hanging out with appetizers and cocktails. Â Probably one of the best Tequila collections in town.
This place is weird. Clearly someone had a Concept -- actually, not just one but several, including cafe-in-a-florist-shop, wine bar, wifi lounge, art space, and, well, large blue furniture? We stopped in for a sandwich, which wasn't bad. The soup, on the other hand, was first cold, then warm but fair at best. They compensated, graciously, with free (and very good!) coffee.
If "My Florist" was in, say, San Francisco, the closest equivalent would be Axis Cafe, which I hate - and even that is less jarring. Since it's _not_ in SF, I suppose it's not necessarily all that bad, but I'm still not really sure exactly why you'd go here, although I can think of several reasons I'd go here instead of less-appealing alternatives. Maybe that's their strategy?
Anyhow - not bad, just a little weird.
Some friends and I met here for lunch during the week. Â It's a really nice, open space, and beautifully decorated. Parking was easy, which is a big deal for me. Â They have an eclectic menu, and everyone was very pleased with what they ordered. Â I had the turkey and brie sandwich, which came on toasted bread, with cranberry sauce and mixed greens. Â Yummer. I thought at first that it was a small portion, but it actually filled me up nicely. Â Plus, they have $5 glasses of wine at lunch, and also at Happy Hour, I think. Â
They lose a star because they were out of the first three wines that I asked for, and they are a little pricey. Â Â But overall, a nice tranquil place to have lunch.
Just .... no. Â
My significant other and I decided to try out My Florist (solely for the reason that I feel as though we've hit up every other place in town) on one of the first really, really god-awful heat wave afternoons. Â No one seated us, and only after asking a bartender/waiter, he motioned to us to pick a seat - any seat. Â Fifteen minutes later, no one had as much as looked in our direction. Â No water, no drink orders. Â We were starving.
They noticed us as we walked out, that's for sure. Â A waiter came running after us and asked why we were leaving. Â Uh, too late. Â I'm also a bit unsettled about the decor - a bit flashy disco in small town Ventura.
While the food was actually really good, the service was terrible. We sat outside in the covered patio area and I don't know if that was part of the terrible service, maybe they were too lazy to walk outside.
The spinach artichoke dip was great and a huge portion! Definitely a serving size of 4. We also had both of the wraps they offer and they were really wonderful. We were served our food and they never checked back until we were already done and ready for the check- they came back asking us if we wanted a box but then never returned. Another waitress came over asking us if we wanted a box and I mentioned that someone asked us that  ten minutes ago and then I watched her take her sweet time, talking to the bartender before printing out our check and giving us a box. The place maybe only had four or five tables besides us, and about five people walking around "working."
I'm thinking we received such horrid service because we look so young- though we did order some wine, so old enough! I've worked in the service industry and I always understand service being bad because there are more tables then people working, but this was just pure laziness.
I will return just because they did have some good food, but if we get the same service, never again!
The best dining experience in ventura- we went there for lunch, we all had wonderfully prepared salads (huge portions) I had something with fruit and chicken in it- it was wonderful!! Â they are supposedly known for their Bloody Mary's- although i haven't tested this yet...
I have a good friend that works there and its really a wonderful place to eat!
I think we shared the antipasto plate, but all I can remember clearly is my glass of mid-afternoon prosecco (which was a delight). I was excited about a new dining option in the downtown and (even better) one capable of projecting images onto the wall of its outdoor seating area. From a design standpoint, My Florist is done well. I like the bi-level seating area inside, the outdoor option, the bar area. If this were in New York, it's the sort of place I'd drift into at two in the morning, unable to fall asleep and in the mood for lazy piano music and soft conversations with strangers at the bar. Unfortunately it looks over Oak Street in Ventura and can't carry with it the same ambiance or romance of the city, but for a few moments, when you're inside, you can at least slip into the illusion.
Service was slow both times I was there. (Working out the kinks of a new place, perhaps?) Though the second time our waitress argued with my colleague about the type of bread served with her sandwich. Rye was used for PB&J instead of the requested sourdough. Our table wasn't accommodated properly and it took eons for the bill to arrive, longer even for change. very unprofessional for a place aimed at achieving a kind of modern sophistication.
If you want to skip the ambiance and head straight for a treat I recommend a visit to the bakery in the back. For one it's much speedier. The cashier will graciously accept your money, hand you a white bag with a delicious chocolate croissant inside, and you are well on your way in under two minutes. Â Just make sure you work out adequately afterward so the butter doesn't register on your scale.
Went on a very stormy day, nobody was out and about in downtown Ventura. Â My girlfriend and I wanted to do something, but didn't want to hit a place with a huge crowd. Â We had dinner already, which wasn't that great, and wanted to finish off the evening with some nice dessert, wine, and simple music. Â We couldn't find anything on Main, so we went off a hunch and went off the street and saw this really empty, high ceilinged, wine bar.
There was no crowd, only about three tables of people in the large seating area, and only a handful at the bar. Â All were in dressy attire.
We parked right in front, and I was immediately impressed. Â They had music playing with the corresponding music video, mostly more popular fun to listen to music. Â Once inside we were greeted by a friendly host and seated with a great waiter. Â It was his first day, but the day was super slow it seemed. Â Not sure if this was normal, since it was almost a monsoon outside.
He helped us choose a few wines, but the list wasn't all that impressive for a glass of wine. Â We ended up spending about $70 on dessert and wine. Â The Dessert was fantastic!! Â I would do it again. Â Wine I would probably try something different next time.
They turned the sound off to the music videos being projected in the outdoor seating area, and a pianist started playing some great tunes on the grand piano for some awesome live music.
This place made my night, and I was very happy we found this place. Â We'll have to come back again for dinner next time.
My husband and I had lunch here on a Sunday. Â The restaurant is bright and airy and the service was excellent. Â My husband ordered the tuna sandwich which came with a nice fruit plate and I ordered the portabello mushroom sandwich which came with a baby greens salad with a sweet lemon vinagrette. Â We agreed that both dishes were exceptionally yummy, especially the homemade breads that the sandwiches were made with.
Also, IMO the coffee is probably the best cup of coffee in Ventura, strong and flavorful!
BTW, we did check out the restrooms, pretty groovy . . .
Randomly driving around Downtown Ventura and went off Main St and happened to come across My Florist. Â My boyfriend and I were looking for a place to just have drinks and hang out without the crowd.
It's really nice inside with high ceilings, nice tables and chairs, and live entertainment. Â However, they do have an interesting silver man statue. Â Their bathrooms are neat!
They have a projector showing music videos out in the patio area. Â The night we were there, there was a man playing the piano on stage. Â It was classy. Â The service was also very good.
We only had wine, appetizers, and dessert. Â But after looking at their menu, I think I'll definitely have to come back and try one of their salads! Â The wine is ok. Â I thought they would have a larger selection of wine for being a wine bar. Â I'm not sure where the bakery part comes into their menu. Â The dessert was delicious and enough for 2 to share.
All in all, it 's a nice to come hang out have a drink and munch. Â Laid back environment and not noisy.
Good lunch! Â
Another new restaurant in Ventura that is actually quite good; things are looking up in Ventura. Â All you entrenched crappy restaurant owners of yore beware...
The sandwiches are fresh and tasty. Â The mahogany tables, the leather chairs and the cloth napkins are also a very welcome addition the dining experience. Â The decor is a bit interesting - sort of 1930's minimalist meets 2007 club. Â The statue centerpiece is a bit strange.
The place strives for urban sophistication in its menu (e.g., brie salad with caramelized pears) and decor. Â It doesn't completely work but I appreciate the effort. Â The decor is rather strange - there's a huge silver statue of a man (looks like the Oscars statue) in the middle of the room, a piano and pictures of San Francisco. Â But it's in Ventura. Â The place looks like a jazz club but one that isn't decorated well. Â Perhaps that's what a jazz club would look like in Arizona (where the original location of the restaurant is).
Still, it's a nice addition to downtown Ventura - it's a wine cafe that's open for early for breakfast and stays open late. Â They bake their own breads (e.g., sunflower seed, baguettes, foccacia, currant-walnut) - breads that they serve with their salads and use in their sandwiches. Â It's an airy, bright space with ample indoor and outdoor seating. Â
We went there for brunch. Â I ordered the baked eggs with tarragon ($7.75) with fresh fruit and a pecan sticky bun. Â The eggs are blended with cream. Â They were decent but too firm/hard and tough in my opinion. Â I expected something more delicate. Â I gave my sticky bun away (heard it was pretty good though) and the fresh fruit was fine (nice variety of grapes, melon, etc.).
Tip: Â Locals say that you should check out the restroom (don't ask why).
Located in the former Goodwill building in downtown Ventura, the oddly named My Florist Winecafe & Bakery opened in December and was the location of my post-Christmas brunch with mom and husband on December 30.
The breakfast menu is short but interesting -- I had a green chile baked egg dish served with fruit and a croissant. Â Husband had French toast, and mom had a mushroom and prosciutto frittata (served with an almond croissant). Â All were very tasty and the portions were the perfect size -- not the flying saucer-sized behemoth platters you'd get at Denny's, just human-sized plates of delicious, freshly made food.
Also, mimosas were $2! Â Great deal -- I had two and wanted a third but my mom gave me the evil eye. Â I don't know why; the mimosas were less expensive than straight orange juice.
The service was pretty good, although I felt like everything took just a tad longer than it should have. Â As far as decor goes, it's a really open, light, airy space with low four-tops as well as high oversized pub tables. Â There's a big black piano on a stage and a giant silver statue looming over the place as well. Â I'm not sure if the piano gets any action in the evenings.
I checked out the lunch and dinner menu and it's heavy on sandwiches and salads. Â Lots of them sounded really yummy, like the roasted peanut butter and Chambord preserves sandwich! Â I will definitely have to schedule a return trip!
