I have yet to be impressed with the food. Â The staff needs a lesson in customer service. Â I've worked in food/bev service before and can be understanding, but I've never been so disappointed. Â Word of mouth is powerful, especially in a sleepy coastal town. Â I hope others are treated better. Â Still left a good tip, but I wouldn't recommend this place and if this keeps up I will never be back.
Review Source:Plenty of tables open at 6:00 PM when We entered. A young man seated or leaning behind the Hostess area asked if he could help us in kind of a below average attitude. I almost said I was there for a haircut, but I didn't. Another person in My party stated We were there to eat and told him the number in our party. (less than 3). He said he would put our name down and it would be about 15 minutes. We looked at all the open tables and hit the road. Consider this was the Thursday night before a big beach weekend. What was to happen on a busy weekend night? For me the war is over.
Review Source:So it's not technically on the bridge anymore, it's tucked away just by front street, apparently much better parking than the former situation.
The menu seemed fairly interesting, but they were out of a few of the fresher catches. I ventured to try a coastal version of fish tacos. Filling, and quite different, but anything fried in enough oil tastes... well southern.
Portions were large and filling. The beer selection was surprisingly decent.
My boyfriend and I went there for dinner last night despite the mixed reviews expecting to be disappointed. The staff was genuinely friendly and bubbly. The service was impeccable. Granted, the decor looks like something from the 70's and the light was too strong. I would have preferred a dimmer light and maybe candles.
Their home-made bread is to die for. I had the clam chowder and the pesto tuna on a bed of egg-plant risotto and my boyfriend had the clams and the shrimp and grits. The clam chowder was tasty (not piping hot - the way I like it). The tuna was perfectly seared. The risotto was a little too heavy and not hot enough but nevertheless delicious.
The best dish was the shrimp and grits, just enough spices and creaminess - amazing.
I would have given them 5 stars if it weren't for the luke-warm soup and risotto and the decor. I will definitely go back.
Nickys recently moved to Old Town Swansboro. We just got to the Boro and wanted some good fried shrimp. Nickys is not the place for it. Â Seafood is way over breaded and the French fries were clearly the frozen variety. Food was served hot, and that is the only good thing to say. Not your classic lightly breaded southern-style fried seafood. Â We experiences clam strips, shrimp, flounder and grouper and it was all very heavily breaded and falling off the food. Â Skip this place for seafood.
Review Source:Sat at the bar...bartender (owner's daughter) was nice but a bit scattered...kinda spotty service. Â
Food:
The stuffed mushrooms were awesome.
The fried artichokes...okay but nothing special.
Scallop Scampi was really tasty. Perfectly cooked and good flavor.
Shrimp and grits...eh. Okay but nothing special. Broth was pretty tasty but I didn't like the way the grits were served. I was expecting creamy grits and got more of a polenta cake. Really not bad though...I'm just not so psyched that I'll eat the leftovers.
Beer:
Okay selection with a good double IPA on tap!
All in all....I'd go back but I'm not raving about it.
The exterior may put some off, as it looks like a dive bar rather than a family-friendly restaurant. Â The dining room beyond the bar does have a great window for watching the water, and there's an outside deck also. Â The decor is very much stuck in the '80s, but not very worn down in spite of that, and clean.
Wait staff was very friendly, and quick with the ice tea refills (always a good sign). Â
We were four for lunch. Â The menu is eclectic and moderately priced for the area.
My father-in-law loves their clam chowder, and it certainly looked good ... Â No lack of clams, that's for sure. Â His grouper sandwich featured a very large lightly breaded filet, which he greatly enjoyed.
My husband felt he didn't choose as well, as his catfish was heavily breaded and perhaps not house-made, as it was very different to the grouper. Â Passable, but not as good as the grouper was.
Mum-in-law went with two apps, which turned out to be way too much food as they were huge servings. Â The potato skins are essentially two large baked potatoes, barely scooped out, with cheese and bacon chunks. Â The fried artichoke hearts were really good, served with an outstanding horseradish sauce.
Tired of fish, I had the burger platter. Â The house-made burger was quite good, with a nice sharp cheddar melted on top. Â The bun was fresh and soft, and the side of sweet slaw was tasty. Â But the fries, which looked to be hand cut and might have been good, were cold. Â Better for me not to eat them, I guess.
Overall, a good solid beachy lunch stop.
Casual atmosphere, gorgeous waterfront views. Â The food is good, especially the seafood which is locally caught and very fresh. Â Service is good, although during the tourist season it can get extremely busy. Â I wish they had more vegetarian offerings, as I take guests there and many are vegetarian.
Review Source:The atmosphere is nothing special, but the food is amazing. Â I had a crabcake, baked potato, and broccoli, my mom had the flounder and shrimp. Â Everything was fresh and delicious. Â I'm 39 years old and have had crabcakes up and down the East Coast, including many places in the Chesapeake Bay area, and this was the best crab cake I've ever had. Â The only down side was the terrible musician playing loud covers in the corner. Â If you're visiting Emerald Isle, don't miss this place. Â An unpretentious gem.
Review Source:We'd driven by this place several times on trips between Swansboro and Emerald Isle, it looks pretty ghetto from the outside, in the inside it looks like a place that was turned into the restaurant in the late 80's, and hasn't been updated since.
We had a big group and were seated quickly--yay, but once we put in our orders the LONG wait began. Â I wish I'd been timing it but it was a long wait for our food. Â The toddler in our party was growing increasingly impatient, our waitress didn't come around too often, if she had we would have asked her to bring out the children's meal ASAP. Â The prices seemed high for the place. Â It was ok overall.
Right next to the Ice House. Don't let the peach and teal exterior scare you. Especially nice if you get a window seat at sunset, which overlooks the marshes. I somehow always manage to get the shrimp with some sort of garlic lemon sauce, which is super yummy.
I've also heard that they have pretty awesome wings and a wing deal on Tuesday I believe.
JUST DRIVE BY IT PLEASE. Â GOOD wraps, GOOD service, GOOD seating. Thats just it. Â Its "good". Â Could definitely be better. Â Great location and potential with an awesome view, but the owner has really lost focus on the business. Â My beef tips served over croutons and white wine sauce had NO white wine sauce... Â That was the selling ingredient and the server informed me that it had been stopped a while back. Â Thats SAD they haven't even updated or even attempted a new sauce to soak into the dry ass meat. Â That was MONTHS ago and i just recently attended Nicky's for a late lunch and found the menu STILL SELLS THE SAME DISH with the white wine sauce in the discription yet not present! Â Only reason Nicky's still stands is due to the local townies that don't go anywhere else. Â Mostly the elderly or friends of the owner sustain the overhead. Â There is much better places a few miles east of Nicky's that will handle your hunger just fine for the same price point. Â Please pass by and wave, because if people STOP GOING HERE, their business will take a dive. Â This will cause SOMEONE to actually fix a lot of the problems that makes Nicky's a 1 star review. Â The place is small, so please don't bring your kids to ruin the small amount of dining experience left for others.
