The key to enjoying Normans is keeping it simple.
I promise you can't go wrong if you focus on the oysters, wings and beer. Â For life in general, these are probably some pretty good principles to follow.
Normans does the simple things well that a lot of places mess up. They have freshly shucked oysters available raw or steamed. Â You can also get them steamed to varying degrees of done-ness to accommodate even the most oyster averse person in your party. Â
I usually focus on the oysters, but when I'm in the mood there is nothing better than their grilled Gold N Bold wings. Â I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure they fry them, sauce them, and then grill them. Â It's a superb combination of kicked up honey mustard and grill flavor.
The beer is cold, plentiful and there is almost always some kind of special going on - just ask.
The service is usually great, even when they are slammed. Â Yes, it's a little red-necky, but that's all part of the fun. Â Just roll with it and keep it simple.
When I lived in the area a few years ago, I loved going to this place for one reason and one reason only.... Cheese wrapped shrimp... Who every heard of such a thing... a food of the Gods...
Service is adequate... atmosphere is commensurate on the time and day you go and attitude of servers changes like the winds.
You have to be careful when ordering these delightful little treats as they can be confused with Jalapeno poppers and if you are a spice wimp *insert raised hand here* that does not make for a pleasant experience.
There are 3 areas to sit, one is outside and they have live bands and it is always full and dirty (Tables not cleaned and when they are, they are the wire mesh outdoor tables that are hard to clean). Another is a small dining room just inside the door and the bar is there. It is friendly but not quaint and then there is a 3rd dining room in the back that is a little quieter and more nostalgic (decorum is great)
The poppers are consistent when they bring you the right ones and the food is a little less greasy spoon than you'd expect from a place like this.
I would recommend it more for lunch than dinner and more during the week than the weekend as I am not the drinker or par tier. If you are taking out of town guests and want to experience the atmosphere of the area then see the village during the day and end with dinner and a live band here and you'll have a blast.
I used to work close by and I am more of a breakfast/lunch person so I prefer earlier visiting hours.
Prices are comparable to most other eateries in the area for the same kind of food and this is one of the more cleaner places in the village!
3 stars for the poppers alone...
-2 stars for the cleanliness, the sometimes wrong orders, the servers on again off again attitudes when they are clearly wrong and the unruly guests that are still served alcohol way after their limit is reached and for really crappy bathrooms.
If you are going to the area this is a must do once... but there are many other places that are just as neat in the same general vicinity. As I write more reviews, hopefully it can help you decide on just where to go and what to see without feeling like you are missing anything.
Lot's of folks turn their nose up and say some silly things about the place (most have not been there) But I like it and bring out of town guests to it. Service is always friendly and good. The wings are quite good and they'll shuck oysters for you all day, if you want. Cold beer, good food and friendly service at great prices. Go on Thursday for the happy hour specials oo the wings and oysters (not to mention beer) Tell me again about those snooty places that are ripping you off....
Review Source:Thursdays are the best times to go. Why? 50 cent oysters and 45 cent wings! People usually order in dozens and just go to town. With 1.50 draft specials, it's a great deal
Service is decent, and there's lots of room inside and outside. Sometimes they'll have live bands outside along the bar. The people inside might be a little rednecky (in the parking lot there was a HUGE truck parked over a curb), but otherwise it's a nice place to get some decent seafood in the area.
