Extensive wine list with $20 bottle nights mid week! Live music on a lot of Friday nights with no cover for diners! Fresh soups and salads! Dinner staples like burgers, meatloaf, and THE BEST chicken fried chicken (or steak) plus fresh seafood, pasta dishes, and amazing home cooked desserts are offered daily. Lunch too! The vibe inside is classic Texas Hill Country eclectic decor the owner built out himself, the outside still resembles it's origin as a gas station built in 1932! Come early if it's band night! The kitchen is not huge due to the building layout, so plan on your food taking a while when it's packed - but it will be worth the wait! I don't know how a small, family run business can offer such a diverse regular menu plus run tempting off-menu specials every day!
Before my family moved out of state we would go to O'Briens atleast once a week and we were never disappointed. Â They have fabulous food, there is a wide selection and something for everyone. Â My personal favorite are the steaks with boneless quail, they are cooked to perfection! Â Another favorite is their chicken fried chicken, crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside. Â The wedge salad is wonderful and so is their macaroni and cheese. Â The service is can be a tad slow when they are super busy, but the friendliness of the servers and the quality of the food more than makes up for it. Â If you are regular customers, they treat you like family. Â My parents used to order something to go for me when they went alone and I would always find a little something extra along with my order. Â I ordered their Thanksgiving dinner to go and it was perfect, I felt like I was eating my mom's, which is one of the highest compliments that I can give! Â If you want great service and great food, definitely give O'Briens a try!
Review Source:The food at O'Brien's is always great... unfortunately the service can be a little on the slow side at best.
The wine list isn't super extensive, but its decent, so we asked to start off with a bottle and a couple of cocktails... About 20-25 minutes later we received them. No big deal, we were't in a hurry. We did start to get a little frustrated when it took another almost 30 minutes to get our soups and appetizers. The seafood gumbo was incredible.. definitely worth ordering! My mom and I each tried the specials of the night.. she got the crusted salmon and I did the portabello stuffed chicken. Both were SO good! My husband ordered the tilapia and shrimp with a side of mac and cheese.. which he devoured, so I'm assuming it was good. My dad had the chicken and dumplings, which I managed to get a bite of.. it was pretty good (though there wasn't exactly "dumplings".. more like one huge dumpling in the middle of the bowl, but it was fine).
We also ordered a couple of desserts... the brownie and the gooey vanilla... the gooey vanilla was delicioussss, but unfortunately the bottom was burnt. When we mentioned this to our server he was kind enough to remove it from our bill and even brought us another one to try (still burnt, but we appreciated the effort).
O'Brien's is consistently good.. which keeps us coming back.. just don't make the drive out there if you're in a hurry, be prepared for a leisurely meal.
We have been coming to O'Briens for 7 years....We live in Spring Branch and split our time between Boerne and New Braunfels.  We try to go to O'Briens at least once a week!  The food is consistantly delicious and the servers and staff are as top notch as they come.  We have never been rushed and have always enjoyed a very relaxing hill country experience each and every time....EVERYTHING that owner/chef Tim prepares is amazing.  He has such a knack for creating dishes that you will come back for time and time again.  Try everything!!! The fish is always so fresh and perfectly prepared.  The steaks are tender and juicy along  with the perfect sides to make the meal an experience you will not forget....Love this place... Go soon!!
Review Source:This is the best Restaurant in Bergheim. Alright, it appears to be the only one as well. We stayed at the Serengeti Resort and their kitchen was closed due to a wedding so went thought we would try this place out. Glad we did. We had a cute young waiter who gave us super great service. Â I started out with a pumpkin pie martini with homemade whip cream. It was delicious and would make a great dessert. We each had a steak, one rib eye and one fillet. Both were good and came with one side so we had the twice baked potatoes also good and had a little bite with horse radish. We also each order a side salad and this is why I knocked a star off. The side salads were $5.99 each. This was a small salad w/greens, a couple tomatoes and cucumber slices and a couple small pieces of onion. I guess being the only place in town allows you to charge whatever you like for things. That being said if I was in the area again I would go back. A charming place with great service and good food, although a little on the pricey side.
Review Source:Very good food, decent prices and nice atmosphere. Â Â I had a Ribeye, I would not consider high end quality but it was what I expected and cooked perfectly. Â My wife ordered the stuffed flounder special. Â She thought the crab stuffing may have been going bad so she returned the plate. Â They cooked her just the flounder fillet and it was excellent. Â Good salad, freshly prepared salad dressings, fried calamari was excellent. Â good wine selection and they do not skimp on the portions (food or wine!)
Waitress was attentive and handled us with a smile through good or bad.
Nice place, I would definitely return if we are in the area
It troubles me to write this review, because this restaurant should be so much better. Â We've gone about once a year for the past 5 years. Â The first time we were pleasantly surprised. Â Ever since then we have been disappointed. Â Last night was the worst. Â The cornbread served before dinner was tasteless, even with butter. Â I love cornbread, but this was just not good. Â I asked the waiter what the Lobster Thermador was on the special. Â He described it, mentioning crab three times--but not Lobster. Â After going through this detailed description, he brought me the beef tips and noodles. Â He apologized, put in my corrected order and even brought the beef tips in a to go container so we could take it home for free. Â My wife at her dinner slowly, but was still done way before my corrected entree arrived. Â I support and enjoy slow food, but this was unacceptable. Â With my entree I had rice pilaf. Â It was bland. Â Rice pilaf should be easy, but this was not good. Â All this might be ok in this charming restaurant, but the prices were really high. Â $20 for a small portion of fish with crab and bland rice. Â $10 for an appetizer. Â
So we tried the beef tips today for lunch. Â Bland. Â Really Bland. Â We dressed it up with pepper and sour cream to make a passable Strouganoff. Â Even in another year we may not give this place another chance. Â O'brien--please fix this. Â Your restaurant can be so much more, but we won't return anytime soon.
I went to O'Brien's for a rehearsal dinner and was a little hesitant. I am not much of a fan of Irish food, but I was pleasantly surprised. The service was fantastic. Our drinks were kept full. Our plates were cleared away instantly and the staff seemed to be ready for whatever we asked for. The food was served buffet style. I had the Bangers and Mash, red potatoes with sour cream and dill pickles, and lastly an Irish brownie. The sausage and mashed potatoes were great, nothing special. Â The red potatoes were AMAZING!!!! I went back three times to get more. The Irish brownie was ok. I really didn't like the overall flavor or texture (seemed dried out), but everyone else really seemed to like it. Maybe it just wasn't meant for me.
Overall, it was a really good dining experience. I would recommend O'Brien's if your in the neighborhood.
One of our all time favorite restaurants anywhere. We've been regulars since they opened and constantly bring new customers in to experience hill country dining at it's finest. Good wine list, exceptional menu items and while a bit pricey for the location...still worth it. The owners, Tim & Becky are delightful and gracious hosts as well. Try the wine dinners if you can, sells out quickly but an outstanding experience.
Review Source:The only restaurant in Bergheim, TX (equidistant from both Boerne and Spring Branch.) Â Fortunately, just because it is the only game in town does not mean it rests on its laurels. Â
Amazing Texas Wedge salad with an excellent Pablano Ranch dressing that offers a slight spice.
"The Texan" Is an absolute must try and recommended to be split between a couple. Â The Texan consists of a 16-oz t-bone grilled to your liking (medium-rare is the way to go) topped with an excellent, but not overpowering, jalapeno and mushroom glaze. Â The fopping for this great combination is 2 perfectly grilled quail.
Great outdoor dining that takes advantage of the moderate temperatures of the Texas Hill Country.
Be aware, the bar does allow cigarette smoking, but no cigar smoking.
