Having traveled across the US and eaten in every type of steakhouse in nearly all 50 states, I have to say O'Hollerans serves some of the best food I have ever eaten at a resturant. Â Their calamari is some of the best I have ever eaten and it is one of my favorite if prepared properly. Â The wait staff were extremely pleasant, fast on service, the owner came over and talked to us. Â
The only thing I would have them do is to double cook thier french fries as they are soggy and not crisp. Â Double cooking is the only way to properly prepare the best fresh french fries.
I was a chef for 15 yeasrs and my hats off to O'Hollerans. Â As soon as my wife and I get moved to Brookings, we will be eating there several times a month.
Keep up the great work.
Chef Bob
Although, at first take on decor I was nervous...I am glad that I trusted fellow yelpers.
This dinner was just right. I found prices vs. quantity and quality to be just right.
The ambiance from the dim lighting and light music were just right for a quite date with my Significant other.
Our dinner and salad tasted great and came out at the right time. No wait on the check and I like that the staff allowed us time to converse with out interruption every five minutes with the generic "how is it"
This was just what we were looking for!
The only reason I'm giving it 2 stars is that the holiday decorations are absolutely charming. The hostess? Not so much. Acted like she was above the lowliness of speaking to customers and I think she was an owner (!). At the bar it took 10 minutes to get anyone's attention, 20 minutes to get a drink, 20 more to get a menu, and my meal was served cold so pretty much uneaten while I struggled for another 15 minutes to get a second drink. Staff was friendly when they bothered to lower themselves to acknowledge you, but after that you were on your own. A very disappointing experience made even moreso by the fact that the owners are complicit in the lack of decent service. There is no one to complain to. I guess in small towns they can get away with treating customers like crap and shamelessly taking their money for serving a substandard product.
Review Source:My husband I haven't had such a good meal as this for a long time.  He had the aged New York Steak and I had the fresh Salmon; soooo gooood!  The salads and trimings were just as good and I didn't have to try the key lime pie but that really put it over the top  The only suggestion we would have is to  have a little higher quality coffee and my friend's french fries were a little soggy because the grease was not maybe hot enough to start. Other than that, THE BEST around these parts!  Looooved it!
Review Source:We come to Brookings 2-3 times a year as we have business in Crescent City and always make a long weekend of it by spending a day or two in Brookings. Â We always have dinner at O'Hollerans! Â The food is always good and even though we only come through a couple times a year, the hostess and wait staff always remember us. Â The restaurant at Christmas time is beautifully decorated! Â We've never had a bad meal here. Â In fact we are heading there this weekend and O'Hollerans is definitely on the itinerary! Â Can't wait!
Review Source:Meh.... I have to say that I went to this restaurant with high expectations but was definitely disappointed.
The food was overpriced, the owners/hostess were friendly - but in a very "going through the motions" way (not a genuine friendly manner, more like they were being friendly cuz they knew I was gonna Yelp after my meal).
Had a ribeye - bland. Â Hubby had the filet and shrimp - meh.
I think there are better options in this small town with more genuinely nice people.
Oh - and this place wins for "GREASIEST GREEN BEANS" I have EVER eaten; not a vegetable...
We had a great meal here tonight. We shared the baby back ribs
made with the most delicious BBQ sauce. We also shared grilled salmon. The preparation was simple yet good. It was accompanied by great homemade tartar sauce. The croutons on the salad were also homemade and outstanding.
The service was friendly and very good. I would definitely come back when I visit Brookings again.
O'Hollerans claims to be a local staple, but if that's the case, it's not saying much about the rest of the town. I ordered the shrimp and scallops special, which consisted of three shrimp and three small scallops sauteed in a very basic wine sauce. Totally not worth the nearly $30 price.
My one companion ordered the cod, which was covered in panko. The portion size was good, but the food otherwise bland. The kitchen got the side ordered wrong too, which resulted in a free stuffed baked potato (which was the best thing there I ate).
My other companion had a NY strip steak, and said it was good. This _is_ a steakhouse after all, so maybe that's all they do well. Still, for an oceanfront town, you'd think the seafood would be better, especially since they have several seafood options on the menu.
Overall, the prices were way too high considering the food served. If you _do_ come here, stick with the steak.
We visited O'Hollerans this past Monday upon the recommendation of one of our employees working in the area. Â We were delighted with both the service and our meal. O'Hollerans is a solid, traditional steakhouse with a menu that should appeal to a wide range of palates. Â The salads were fresh and served with housemade dressings. Â A housemade pickled beet is served with the salad, which rivals any grandmother's recipe. Â My husband complimented the chef for the beets and along came a small bowl with a few more slices. Â I ordered the sauted bay scallops and prawns, which was one of three specials. Â The shellfish was cooked perfectly. Â My husband ordered a sirlion steak which was cooked to a perfect medium rare and had outstanding flavor. Â The next time we are in Brookings, O'Hollerans will be our stop of choice.
Review Source:We arrived in town after a long day of driving. We were nervous about coming into a steak place half an hour before closing because you might get the bottom of the barrel, food and service-wise.
Well, if this was the bottom of the barrel, I would love to taste how good their food is normally! I got the steak and fried prawns at the suggestion of another yelp review. It was delicious. The steak was tender, flavorful, ample sized. The prawns were big, and battered lightly. They were served with asparagus, a twice baked potato, and a salad. Homemade croutons! It's the little things that matter.
My boyfriend got the chicken caesar salad. I don't care for chicken breast, but as far as they go, this was pretty tasty. The salad was huge, with plenty of meat.
Our waiter was very friendly and engaging. The only negative was that he didn't offer us dessert! The selections looked tasty (deep dish key lime pie!), but it's awkward to order more after they've brought you the check. Oh well.
We left stuffed and impressed. We will definitely come back if we do the coastal drive again.
Wow!
Came for dinner last week and did not leave disappointed! Started with fried clam appetizer which was the hubby's pick. He was in heaven! I had the fillet with stuffed potato and veggies. All I can say is it was delicious and my steak was cooked perfectly!!! Hubby had the rib eye and gobbled it up. I tried a glass of their house red (I think Merlot) but it was a bit too spicy for my taste.
The atmosphere, the service and the food all 5 stars! And not to boast, but coming from the bay area where there's so many great restaurant's, this place definitely holds its own!
See you there!
Had a wonderful dinner at O'Hollerans Steakhouse Saturday February 4, 2012.
There were 12 in our party. Service was great, food was excellent. The New York steaks were top quality & perfectly cooked to order. The beer batter prawns were some of the best we've had in years.
The original O'Hallerans was an account of my fathers in the 60's and 70's. He had not been in for dinner since 1980. We were not disappointed.
My wife and I had been looking for a good restaurant here in Brookings. Â We had found some ok places. Â Last night we found this wonderful place. Â We were greeted by the owner who was extremely friendly. Â Next came our waiter who was friendly, but not over the top annoying. Â They were both very attentive! Â My wife ordered the baby back ribs, and I ordered a Ribeye Steak. Â The ribs were excellent, and the meat fell right off the bone. Â My ribeye was cooked perfect with plenty of flavor. Â I recommend getting a salad with Roquefort dressing! Â They bring out some delicious bread that actually has bits of garlic within. Â
Earlier on, we were asked why we were in town, and we explained that it was our anniversary. Â After dinner, they brought out a slice of cake with two lit candles on top. Â So very nice! Â We were stuffed when we left! Â When in Brookings, stop here. Â You won't be sorry!
We had a wonderful dinner & drinks. Newer beautiful restaurant with nice friendly service. Approx. $15 - $26 per meal the food is great but spendy. Â funny thing was all the wine was from Cal. We are from Medford & there could have been some really good Oregon wine available. Â We sat in the bar and had our dinner. Â It was really nice!
Review Source:I think this was the nicest looking steakhouse in the area based on the reviews. I was a little leery when they closed the dining room and put us at the bar but our server was amazing. I wish I remembered her name. Anyway, my filet was perfectly cooked and seasoned. By the time we arrived there were no more baked potatoes but instead these twice baked potatoes...OMG! I never had one before and I've been missing out. They are hella good. I'd def recommend this place for a good steak dinner in the Gold Beach/ Brookings area.
Review Source:Very friendly staff with decent food. Â
After having lots of bread with our lunch, we wanted some clean burning fuel for dinner. Â Steakhouse? Â Perfect!
After sitting down we found out, unfortunately, that they were out of the Prime Rib. Â And when I inquired about the Quiche on the menu, I was told they no longer serve it. Â So why is it still on the menu?
The spouse & I both ordered the steak sandwich. Â It's an open-faced sandwich on two small pieces of their garlic bread. Â The steak was cooked as ordered, and it comes with veggies, salad, and fries. Â The salad is pretty interesting, having beets on it (mmmm!). Â The beets, however, do taste as if they've been sweetened with cinnamon & possibly nutmeg. Â If you don't like sweet beets, skip them.
-1 stars for not removing discontinued items from their menu, and the steak being a bit bland, even if nicely cooked.
Do you ever wish there was a "Not Useful" button on yelp? What is this, youtube? Of course there are veggies with dinner. There's the salad (with mixed greens, not iceberg!), or a side of sauteed zucchini and summer squash, or tons of vegetables in that hearty vegetable soup? Also, here's something new to learn: a potato is a vegetable! Brookings isn't exactly a fertile valley, so I'm not sure why people would expect a cornucopia of greenery with their prime rib. Move to southern California for that. Or eat somewhere that uses frozen veggies. Furthermore, why would you try to go to a place for lunch when it's not advertised as open for lunch? This town is too small to be open 7 days a week for lunch and dinner and still maintain high quality food and service. In this economy, who will eat there? Who will staff it? When will they do the prep for all that nonfrozen food? If they were ever open for lunch and then stopped it's because you didn't bother to show up when they were.
Here is some actual information about the place:
- Whoa, festive decorations for the holidays, clearly a lot of time was spent on this
- A bowl of soup is ridiculously cheap and always tasty, the salmon bisque is dreamy
- The meat is the highest quality you can get in the area, the waitress told me the beef is grass-fed, always from the same small farm
- They seem to have wild caught and seasonal fish on special often
- The stuffed potato is addictive, I always want to save the top for last like a muffin top
- Absurdly large pours of wine and clearly no skimping on the liquor in the cocktails
- Regular plus local beer on tap, the Deschutes one rotates sometimes
- Keno, slot machines, and big flat screen TVs in the lounge
- Ample parking
- Friendly service that will joke around with you and keep you happy
- Homemade snickers cheesecake is huge and dangerous (as are the other desserts based on seeing them being passed out to other customers)
The last time I was in I had the special wild caught sockeye salmon and rice pilaf, and the bf had steak with a marsala sauce of local wild chanterelles. Those mushrooms would be like 5 dollars more in a big city restaurant but here they were just a couple dollars more than the regular steak on the menu and you get tons of them. I remember last year I had a seared ahi special with some sort of soy based sauce on the side that was delicious.
I definitely would recommend this to locals and folks passing right by on the 101! I wish I could stop by for some snickers cheesecake right now...
O'Holleran's is always reliable for a wonderful dinner. I have never been disappointed. They service and food are great and I love the remodeled look! It is still very small and our recent trip on Valentines Day was awkward due to the high school choir singing to each table without asking permission. We were uncomfortable and it was too loud for such a small place, there were at least 15 kids in there! I also like the more laid back booths in the lounge area, very cozy and fun.
Review Source:I am an fan of O'Holleran's. Every time I am in Brookings you can find me there a few times a week. The food, service, quality and not to mention the wonderful staff and great customers is a sure bet you will find yourself feeling like you home with family... a good family.
Personally I tend to flip flop back and forth between two items. I either have the Rib Eye, or Fried Prawns. I need to venture forward more, but when I find a good thing I just seem to stick with it. They always seem to have a nice selection of soup and the quality of being homemade shines through. Brilliant!!!!
Enjoy....
My husband and I were vacationing for a week in Brookings and tried out O'Hollerans. Â We enjoyed it so much we went back again. Â I had the filet and lobster. Â Both were cooked perfectly. Â The next time we went I had the Chicken Cordon Bleu which was also delicious. Â My husband had the filet both times and was impressed both times. Â We also had calamari appetizer, which is the best I ever had. Â The service was good as well. Â We will go back again next time we are here.
Review Source:NOTE: This restaurant/lounge is only open for dinner.
I sat in the lounge area, where there are gambling machines and keno available. Â There are TVs showing sports, and a singer with an organ if you feel like dancing (and yes, some folks did). In other words, there are plenty of stimuli if you don't want to chat with your dining companions.
It is obvious that the folks at O'Holleran's have made an effort to create a new steakhouse in the old tradition. There were lots of locals meeting up and enjoying a nice night out to celebrate birthdays and anniversaries. Â The menu is a mix of classic steakhouse fare and some new twists on old favorites.
The food showed some effort, even if it didn't bowl me over. Â The carrots that came with our entrees were definitely fresh carrots cut by hand and glazed with a homemade brown sugar glaze, not anything from a can. But it was just okay. Â The steak tips marsala was a creative idea, and the sauce was made in-house with fresh mushrooms and marsala wine. Â Everything was homemade (though I'm still not sure about my companion's twice-baked potato--but nothing baked twice can be truly fresh).
A highlight was my side of fries: hand-cut french fries from fresh potatoes. Â I really enjoyed them. They, along with a house salad with homemade blackberry vinaigrette, filled me up. Â That was good, since I didn't enjoy my baked oysters at all. They were far too fishy smelling and tasting. Â I'd never had Pacific oysters before, so perhaps that's how they are and I just don't like oysters. But I had to leave them behind since my companion wouldn't touch them after smelling them.
I doubt I'll be back, but I do think that O'Holleran's is a good meeting place for locals who want some steak in a casual but nice setting.
we ordered steak with baked potato and seafood platter of fried cod, shrimp, oyster, and clams, with twiced bakes potato. the waitress came back saying that they were out of baked potatoes so i asked for fries. when the food came, the fries were soggy and black, as if they were overcooked in old oil. the steak was perfect to my medium done request. the seafood platter was good but the twiced baked potato was obviously a pre-made/frozen dish. as for the appetizers, we ordered fried zucchini and shrimp coctail. both were good.
Review Source:There are two entries for this place on Yelp, so I'm going with the one that has more negative reviews, so I can offset. Â
This place is fantastic. Â First of all, they filled my wine glass with a local wine UP to the BRIM. Â Oh, yeah. Â Second, the special of the night, which was a smoked salmon, was probably one of the best things I've ever eaten. Â AND, third, the homemade rice pilaf that came with said smoked salmon, was probably one of the second best things I've ever eaten. Â
Cute waiter, who was very fun and teased us a lot. Â My boyfriend got this giant steak and a wonderful baked potato. Â I got homemade huckleberry dressing with my salad. Â Amazing. Â Boyfriend got homemade honey-mustard. Â Lovely. Â
I loved this place. Â It was the perfect meal after 12.5 hours of driving.
This Steakhouse came highly recommended by several people for their Prime Rib. Â We had the pleasure of sitting by the beautifully decorated Christmas tree under a million Christmas lights. Â Â We were highly disappointed that they were out of their Prime Rib by 6:30pm on a Saturday night but with so many choices on their menu I found a wonderful replacement. I had the Filet Mignon perfectly charred and tender paired with huge ginger lime shrimp. Â The BF enjoyed the house special of rib eye steak covered in Bleu cheese, too sharp for me but he liked it. Â We were surprised they had a delicious Manhattan clam chowder since every other place was serving New England. Â Â Service was slow at first because the house was packed with locals, our server Shandra was informative at local suggestions and personable once the rush was over. Â Bathrooms were even decorated and super clean.
Review Source:After spending all that money and time on a renovation, it seems rather pointless to have the joint closed for lunchtime on a fine spring Sunday which saw so many people circulating. Â Some of us prefer the healthier alternative of eating our big meal earlier in the day (dinner) and then having a light supper.
My friend and I had driven down a good ways to Brookings, anticipating a fine meal here. Â Imagine our sad surprise at seeing O'holleran's closed up tighter than a drum at 1 PM. Â We the people cannot do business if you are not open for business! Â We then headed out to the Chinese place in Harbor where we found someone with a restaurant who was actually willing to work, ordered up a fine meal and enjoyed ourselves thoroughly. Â Those Chinese are HARD workers and realize the importance of keeping the door open. Â I guess the owners of O'holleran's must be so loaded with dough that they don't care if we didn't get a chance to try them out. Â Figure on us never trying again and That's The Way The Cookie Crumbles!
Your loss!
