We stop by the Old Erie every chance we get. We like to ride our bikes on the canal path, and travel out this way at least twice or three times a year.
The food here is creative, and it's excellent.
This is a real gem, and the owner and all the workers obviously care about the quality of the food and the service.
We like to sit outside and snack or eat lunch with a couple of the craft brews they have on tap here.
We'll be back.
My husband and I stumbled upon this wonderful place after making a day of it sightseeing  in the Finger Lakes last summer.  We visited for a 2nd time last night and were just as pleased as before.  We started with the Perogies which were nicely sauteed with sauerkraut and caramelized onions on the side~yummy.  Oh, I forgot to mention the bread basket which arrived with a portion of relished lentils for a topping~one bite of these tasty legumes and I left the bread behind and ate the whole bowl myself~my husband was texting so he lost out!  As I raved about these lentils, the waitress kindly brought me over another dish of them and the recipe to boot! I ordered the potato encrusted Salmon which was topped with a black bean relish and a dab of sour cream~the German influence.  The portion was huge and delicious-really crunchy potato on the outside and perfectly cooked salmon pink and juicy on the inside~half of it came home with me! (Too many lentils!) My Man enjoyed his Sauerbraten which was very tender and had that luscious ginger snap taste in the gravy.  Our waitress was also the hostess and the bartender and managed all three jobs to my amazement~it was late on Sunday night and not very crowded at 7:30.  This is a special little place with a wonderful small town atmosphere and well worth the visit an hour down the thruway from Rochester.  It's just off the exit so easy to find and stop in during your travels.
Review Source:Haven't eaten here in over 20 years. It wasn't great then and multiple owners later it still isn't. Most food tastes and looks canned. An entire plate is tasteless. Just because it's a small town people deserve something good when they go out. Won't be back. The only thing about the place is the friendly service.
Review Source:I live in the area and it has been a while since we've been to Old Erie so we took the family as a spontaneous night out. Â We called and were able to get in within the hour. Â We had mozzarella sticks and calamari for appetizers...the mozzarella sticks were huge but disappointed to find there was hardly any cheese in them, the calamari didn't come with dipping sauce, but once you tasted them you didn't need any...they were great. For Dinner we had the shrimp and lobster scampi over pasta, very good and the serving size was perfect, ny strip was larger than expected and ended up taking the leftovers home. Â The younger child had the hamburger from the pub menu, larger than he could handle, and the hubby had the chicken Parmesan that he said was disappointing. Â The wait staff were great, it was cozy for a family dinner and we were out within an hour and a half. Â
Overall it was good and we left satisfied.
Who knew?? Â Yes, you can find fairly good food in tiny Towns and Villages in Upstate NY.
I had been here years ago with my Aunt and mother and the moment I walked in I was brought back to memories of simpler times in my life.
We sat at the bar, duh. The bartender was a young ambitious guy, I think the son of the owner. He was very, very nice and welcoming but not in a pushy way. Â We ordered our drinks and checked out the menu, which was stained and worn.
We noticed a mix of German and local specialties, an odd mix have you but each item sounded interesting.
We shared pirogi and sweet and sour shrimp so you get my point as to the odd mix. Â
The pirogi were OK...I make better ones to be honest but they were hot and plump with potato and cheddar filling. Â I wanted caramelized onions but we were served sauerkraut and sour cream.
The sweet and sour shrimp were better with crispy fried shrimp with pearl onions, yes pearl onions and sweet and sour sauce, delicious.
My man had the Yager Schnitzel with veal, $18 and he said it was disappointing. The accompanying spatzle tasted of the freezer/refrigerator. Â Sad.
I ordered a burger and it was huge and delicious but I think it was Sysco and the give away was the odd shaping of the meat. Â It was made to look hand pattied which it was not, but it was good and cooked perfectly and I loved the bun, which was not the normal white bread, grocery store bun you often get at restaurants around here.
As I wrote this review I realized how average the meal was but the service was great and friendly and perhaps I am just too picky.
Overall I recommend this place for apps and drinks.
Oh, I almost forgot. Â There was a couple at the end of the bar that almost ruined our night out. First off the guy was a complete douche. He sent back three bottles of beer saying they tasted off...(really) and he talked like he thought he was from SoCal, so funny. Â Dude, grow up. Drop the surfer attire, this is NY State.
Being from Auburn, and having family in Weedsport it's no surprise that I've frequented this restaurant several times in my life. Â But most of what i remember growing up was very simple and plain food (that depending on the day) was difficult to really mess up. Â It was the overall safe bet that if you weren't from the area you probably would just drive by and look for a sign you recognized. Â Well ever since the new management has taken over at the Old Erie, I must make a plea for anyone driving by in the area Weedsport, Â Stop the car and take your taste buds for a ride. Â
Now I will state that if you are vegetarian/Vegan you may have some difficulty, especially with some Classical Dishes as Jager Snitzle. (your choice of pork or veal) Getting that out of the way...The Old Erie serves the classic down home favorite dishes with a slight European and American twist. Â And this is quality, made fresh daily items that will swoon you all the way to homemade desserts.
If i did not mention this I think my fiance would have a word later: Â The scallop lobster mac and cheese is a SIN waiting to happen. Â Perfectly seared scallops, with tender lobster chunks in this beautiful mac and cheese. Â After having this you will never look at the blue box mac and cheese the same way again. Â And all of the childhood memories will come back and tell you "why didn't we have this when growing up??!!!"
The service was spot on, and always attentive. Â They will great you with a smile and you will not feel like a stranger. Â
Great Job!
We revisited the Old Erie on Wednesday, 1 August 2012, on our way back from Vermont to Ohio. Â It was BBQ night. Â We split a huge caesar salad to start. Â We had enough leftovers to mix with tuna for a nice lunch the next day. Â I had the hal-rack of smoked hickory ribs and my wife the cherry-smoked brisket. Â The entrees were accompanied by corn-on-the-cob (slightly overdone), a nice cole slaw, and fries (instead of the announced "salt" potatoes). Â Yet, it was a wonderful meal. Â Well paced. Â Service was great. Â Portions, substantial.
