This used to be one of our favorite restaurants, but we are unlikely to return. We have not been there about 3 years, and we were completely disappointed tonight!! First, we noticed the paper menu with water stains, rather than the professionally done menu of the past that highlighted the history of the building, and the culinary background and experience of the owner. That alone was kind of a clue that things would be different. We wondered if there was change in management. I think the quality of the rest of the meal answered that question for us.. After we ordered, the bread and butter with the traditional lentils were brought. The bread was unheated. Simply put, the lack of the special touch of warm bread was another
clue that the quality was down a notch. We missed the traditional garlic and oil with spices that formerly we could drizzle on the bread to start things off. According to the waitress, that was discontinued about two years ago. My wife ordered Tuscan vegetable soup which had a very good
flavor. However, while taking a spoonful, in her mouth she found a small piece of "rubbery plastic" material that was in the soup. She took it out and we immediately showed the waitress. She apologized politely, and took it into the kitchen. We honestly thought the cook or a manager would come to our table to apologize/ explain, or to make even a modest adjustment to our bill, but no further mention whatsoever would come about. The crusted white fish was OK, but had soggy crumbs and an overwhelming taste of butter. The Julienned squash has little flavor, and excess butter.
My salmon with crusted potato was also acceptable, but the "crusted potato" seemed to be frozen hash browns. To top it all off, I ordered a low fat white milk with my meal. I drank about one third and realized that there was black specks floating on top. Looking further, I realized that there was
dirt or left over food stuck on the INSIDE of the glass. I brought this up to the waitress, and she said something like "I'll have to speak to those boys." (Meaning, the dishwasher boys, I guess.)
I was kind of hoping she would bring me a new clean glass of milk, but, again, no further mention of this was made. All in all, this was a disappointment from the memorable and quality dining experience we always had in the past here. We live 50 miles away and occasionally stopped when passing by on the Thruway. We do not plan to return again!
