We found this on a bike cycling trip on the Olympic Discovery Trail. This place had awesome decor and the food was very good and very reasonable. The staff was pleasant and took good care of us. It will be a stop for us on all our visits to the Olympic Peninsula I am sure! I am glad we found it!
Review Source:Do you ever wonder what a restaurant owned by an old school logger would be? If you can overlook that the staff may not be groveling at the correct level, for service ranges from poor to bad, the Old Mill seems to alway have good food. Sometimes it is imaginatively conceived, sometimes it is basic fare. It seems to be always good. The owner is almost always there, bussing tables, filling drinks, and chatting. If you want to meet him, and get an education, ask about some of the lumbering collection, or wood strewn about the property. There is heart in this place, the prices are typically high for the area, and help is the constant challenge here. But it is one of the better places on the peninsula.
Review Source:The food here is good (not great) while the service is awful. Â My wife and I stopped through on our way home from Neah Bay. Â
What my wife really wanted was some soup. Â When she tried to order the soup du jour, she was told they were out of soup. Â Then, a group sat down next to us and ordered (and received) the exact same soup. Â The strangest thing is it was our same server. Â Weird. Â
My wife went with the French dip instead of the soup. Â It was fine but pretty unremarkable. Â The bun was pretty good.
I had the Kobe burger but was pretty disappointed. Â It was really no better than the average burger I cook on my barbecue. Â It was fine. Â It was juicy. Â The taste was no richer and the flavor was not notably any different than your typical store-bought ground beef.
After we finished our meal, we had to go ask for the check after waiting several minutes. Â I was surprised that such a well-reviewed place had such poor service.
There are a lot of very good reviews. Â Maybe we were there on an off day??
While cycling in Sequim, we stumbled on to the Old Mill Cafe in Carlsborg - not really sure where Sequim ends and Carlsborg starts, but you can Google it and find heaven on a plate for breakfast. We had a veggie omelet and chicken fried chicken. Both were very good and the SERVICE was excellent - they were great with local suggestions and menu options.
The homemade gravy was rich and creamy and the Jacquot's Harvest (veggie omelet) was a mix of fried potatoes, onions, zucchini, and tomatoes topped with cheese.
NOM NOM freakin' NOM.
It says Carlsborg but I would still just call it Sequim, for those headed in from out of town. Â Just an FYI. Â It's over by the golf course. Â
What can I say? Â We sat down and were told that they were running far behind because everybody came at once so getting food would take about 35-40 minutes. Â I was too hungover to protest so I just whispered 'water' and hoped for the best. 2 minutes later they brought by some fresh fruit for us to nibble on while we waited to order. Â On the house, in fact, which I found rather classy. Â And this was a vast bowl of fruit, mind you. Â We ordered after getting some recommendations (chicken fried chicken breakfast and the dungeness bene), and then they brought us a 'starter pancake' because they felt bad about the wait. Â I actually heard 'star pancake' and was sad when I realized that it wouldn't be star shaped. Â And then I was super happy because my server had figured out a way to beat the system. Â (yes, we tipped well for that little non-star nugget of happiness)
Our actual food: Â the eggs were cooked PERFECTLY. Â Like, I don't even get it. Â They must use one of those cool egg poachers from the infomercials. Â The shape and the density...I haven't actually had a poached egg this perfect in my life. Â Also, the hollandaise was damn near perfect - nice and mild to not cover up the delicateness of the crab meat...of which, there was a generous amount. Potatoes were perfectly seasoned (although a smidge oily...but what did I care, I had a vat of rum to soak up from the night before). Â My husband had the chicken fried chicken (wouldn't that just be chicken? I feel like there should be a negative integer there somewhere) and said that it was the best breakfast he had had since we started dating. Â I would be offended but I have to agree. Â It was such a delight to stumble upon this place.
Will always go back when we are in town.
Oh and to the managers: please be open on Mondays...at least Mondays that are holidays. Â We came back to eat at your establishment the next day and almost cried when you were closed. Â We were forced to go to Oak Table...see my other review for that awesomeness. Â I blame YOU. Â ;)
Their kobe beef burger is delicious, but sometimes it's a bit too rich and you're full after about 2 bites. So a lot of the time, as an alternative, I'll get their pastrami sandwich. I don't typically even eat pastrami, but this sandwich is soooo good I can't resist. There is a diversity of things to choose from on the menu and the service is usually pretty good (I think there was one occassion where it was lacking because they were so busy, but it was forgivable). Lots of fun things to look at, too. One table had all sorts of old keys and matchbooks from restaurants in Sequim from yesteryear under the table glass. And of course there is lots of sawmill-related stuff to check out. Love the rustic atmosphere. We'll be back!
Review Source:At the end of our family vacation we decided to stop somewhere local on our way out of town, it was Friday September 16th. We pulled into Old Mill and were interested in all of the decor, once inside we were greeted warmly and they easily accommodated the 7 of us. We sat at a table with a little model Mill under the glass. The owner was there that day and talked to a few members of the family about the different tables and areas of the restaurant. We ordered for the baby first and let me say the children's meals are fit for an adult! The menu was amazing, filled with old favorites and new takes on them, I have a hard time making decisions and I was pleased with the different combo meals that were offered. I've had better biscuits and gravy but the hash browns were cooked crispy as I ordered them, added sourdough toast that came with Graysmarsh Farms preserves that was quite honestly the best toast and preserves I have ever tasted. They charge for to-go boxes so bring a Tupperware because their portions are HUGE! Definitely worth the trip!
Review Source:Oh boy. The eggs were overdone for the benedict. The food was cold and gravy coagulated. It took a very long time to get our food and then our check (And she knew we were done because she gave us a "to go" box).
Locals seemed to get served faster than us. Groups larger than us (4) too! We watched them arrive, eat and leave before us.
I would not go back
Horrible service! Snobbish waitress! We went there after visiting lavender farms. Food was ok, restaurant looked nice. but we were extremely upset by our waitress. There were not many guests when we entered, but it took us 15 minutes wait to order our food. We ordered burgers from their menu, which said "You can choose salad or soup, fries or onion rings." We assumed that we can choose both soup and fries for each of us. However, our waitress insisted that the menu means the customer can only choose one of these four options. So we ordered two burgers with only one soup and one onion ring. Later when we were eating our 2 lonely burgers (one with only one order of onion ring on the side and one burger in an empty plate), several elder people came in and sit next to our table. They were served right away by our waitress. We surprisingly found that the waitress ask them how would they like to have their burgers cooked (she did not even bring the question up to us!!!) and she served each of them both soup (or salad) and fries (or onions they choose!)! Our waitress ignored us during the meal (so I could not get a chance to ask for the ketchup), and I had to catch her to ask her to give us check after waiting in our table and waving our hands for 10 minutes after we finished our burgers! We were in a hurry to catch the ferry so we did not even have time to argue with her but left in anger. We could not understand why such ridiculous thing would happen to us. If you do not look like retired rich elders, don't dare to go to this restaurant to get yourself ignored by the waitress.
Review Source:I've had some really nice lunches, some really terrible breakfasts, and some very expensive & below average dinners at Old Mill. It's one of those places you keep going to because you know if they do it right, it will be so good. But after the last terrible breakfast - seriously, the biscuits & gravy had zero flavor - we will never be back. There are better, more reliable places in town to get a sandwich or hamburger. Sorry Old Mill... I really, really wanted you to be good!
Review Source:We were recently in Sequim on Thanksgiving from Baton Rouge. We could not find anywhere to have a traditional meal. We drove by this restaurant and they were open. We stopped in and, despite the fact that we didn't have reservations, they made room for us. The service was excellent and the food was great! (The quantities are way too big.)
We had such a good time that we returned and once again had a great meal with great service.
After hearing from a friend that Old Mill Cafe had the "best biscuits and gravy on the Peninsula", we decided to give them a shot.
We were heading to Silverdale late Sunday morning (I know - Sundays are the busiest mornings for restaurants) and stopped in for breakfast. We placed our order and we waited. And waited. And waited. After a half hour or so, the server told us there was a large group (15 top) before us and that the kitchen was trying to cook our order at the same time. 45 minutes after we ordered, we got our food.
The food was cold.
The biscuits and gravy were pretty good, and my husband seemed to enjoy the spinach scramble. We were hungry and probably would have eaten anything at by that point. The fact that we waited so long and received cold food was a major disappointment.
