We've been coming to Door County for years, and just tried this place for the first time. We had breakfast, and everything was delicious. Prices were great too, and we even had a view of the bay from our table inside. The hostess was very friendly and efficient, the decor inside is really cute, and there's a nice patio with outdoor seating. I think my only "complaint" would be the lack of a kids menu. But for breakfast, we were able to find enough for the kids to nibble on from everyone else's orders. We'll definitely be back.
Review Source:We have been going to the Old Post Office for more than 15 years. The fish and fried chicken are great. Earl, the boil master, is a hoot and knows how to put on a good show....his jokes will make you wanting more:) "Just for the halibut!"
It's unfortunate that this experience was an unpleasant one. Right off the bat, the hostess, I'm assuming the same as in a previous review, was very snippy and rude. When we asked where we were sitting she stated, "I thought the two highchairs would have given it away." I read a previous review, written 12 days ago, and their experince was a carbon copy of ours. We were asked if we wanted to sit inside or outside and choose outside. When we sat down the bees were so bad we asked to be seated inside....considering half the restaurant was empty. Â They moved us with no problem, but the hostess and crew proceeded to talk about our table in plan sight.....totally unprofessional. We actually called them on it and spoke to the hostess and what appeared to be a manager. They denied everything and never apologized for any of the mishaps. Also, even though the food is good....it's super expensive for the amount of food you get.....$15 for a kids fish meal....and $4 for just a hotdog!
This experience has given us a bad tatste in our mouth to say the least.
Very disappointing experience. Â My family ate here for the fish boil, because all of the others in the area were booked up. Â I guess that should have told me something.
The view was incredible, and watching the actual fish boil was a neat experience.
When we made our reservation, they asked if we wanted to sit inside or outside. That's a tough question to answer two days in advance, when you don't know what the weather will be, but we said outside. Â When we arrived, it was hot and muggy so we asked if we could be seated inside. Since half the restaurant was empty, you would think this wouldn't be a problem, but the hostess (who seemed to be running the operation) was clearly upset. Â She said, "well, I guess, but we already have you set up outside. Â I'll have to move the water and silverware". Â Ok.....
She literally huffed and puffed while she did this. Â
Our bill was $65 for two fish boils and a kids chicken tender. Â Pretty outrageous considering you only get two pieces of fish and have to serve yourself.
Also, this is a dry town, so you can't get a drink. Â
Ok food, but bad service and hospitality ruined the experience.
I've been here for the fish boil and for breakfast. Both are excellent!!!
The fish boil is the healthiest meal you will get in Door County as long as you DON'T ADD BUTTER!!! Â Good luck with that.
The whitefish is very tasty without tasting fishy. The point of the fish boil is to remove the oils that give fish the fishy taste. Even though the wait staff debones the fish, you still need to be careful for stray bones.
The potatoes and onions are excellent. If you have never had a boiled onion, be sure to try it. Boiled onions have a nice flavor without overtaking the flavors of the fish or potatoes.
Earl give a great history of the fish boil but his jokes are not the best. I think he is well aware of this.
I have to agree with other yelpers, the show was good, watching the fish boil itself is fun but the food, eh. Â It is so-so at best. Â They "de-boned" my fish for me... really, every mouthful I pulled bones out. Â My boyfriend had only 1 bone on his last bite. Â I can understand missing one or two but I had a plate of bones and that didn't impress me at all. Â I am not a cherry pie fan, never have been so I thought I might get just a scoop of ice cream, oh there is an extra charge for that. Â I am not a tea drinker, never have been can't stand the stuff, if you want a coke, there is an extra charge for that. Â For coke???? Â I'm talking the drink, not the drug. Â Then for the extra charge I had a can plopped on the table... well ok, interesting.
I went to a fish boil in Door County it was 20 years ago this past July. Â I can still remember it like it was yesterday. Â I was not a fan of fish, when our hosts said we were going to have boiled fish for dinner my eyes got huge, in fear. Â My husband assured me he would find me a Burger King later, just be polite. Â Which of course I was but boiled fish scared me! Â But ok, it is a Door County "thing". Â I LOVED it. Â The fish was delicious, the sides were incredibly tasty... I have been thinking about it for 20 years! Â I'm finally back in the area and I won't say I was disappointed but when I'm done writing this review, I will have forgotten about this experience. Â It will not be a 20 year long memory of amazing food. Â Do it for the kitsch of Door County but don't do it expecting amazing food and ambiance and service and anything else... just to say "I was in Door County and ate at a fish boil!"
No answer on good for groups, I'm sure they can pull tables together but not sure how well that would work out, no private room for a large group.
No answer on kids because if your kid likes fish, sure. Â If not, avoid it!
No answer on take out because I don't think it is like a Chinese restaurant with take out but I did see some people leave with their cherry pie in tin foil. so yes but no.
Waiter service? Â For the boil, about the same service as any buffet joint but nothing personalized.
I stayed at the Edgewater Resort a few weeks ago and had an amazing time. Â The resort itself had amazing views and the restaurant was good. Â They have a great breakfast with fresh blueberry pancakes and it is reasonably priced. Â
Obviously the best part of the dining experience was the Fish Boil every evening. Â Earl (The Boilmaster) does a great job explaining the process and the fish is fresh and caught locally (or so they tell us). Â For the Boil, you get fresh whitefish, small onions, red potatoes, coleslaw, and fresh bread. Â Its delicious. Â The only downer is that there are a ton of small bones in the fish that can hurt if you're not paying attention. Â
In any event, I loved it, but the price is a bit high for dinner. Â Definitely a must though if in Ephraim or Door County. Â
A repeat customer even after my review. Â :)
We attended the fish boil on a Friday night at 6:30 and ended up spending 30 minutes in the buffet line. I noticed other people quickly line up after the boil-over. This is a Door County fish boil. As other reviewers have noted there is a bit of a rushed feeling as you do not have time to linger with only 30 minutes to eat.
Review Source:Pretty good fish boil here however I was a bit thrown off by the fact that they do not serve alcohol here. Â Nothing goes better with fish than a beer. Â Also note that they typically only do two fish boils a night (5:30 and 6:45 I believe) so call ahead or stop in to reserve your spot. Â I've also heard their breakfast is solid too.
Review Source:Door County is noted for its fish boils. Â Having been to several in the area The Old Post Office is definitely one of the best. Â The boilmaster (a/k/a chef) is entertaining and friendly. Â Not only does he tell you about the development and history of fish boils but he's known for telling jokes as he does. Â Sure...they're corny....but that's part of the fun.
The boil itself was very good and reasonably priced by Door County Fish Boil standards. Â The view from the front of the restaurant overlooking Green Bay is spectacular at the sunset.
They're breakfasts are very good too. Â I like the cherry pancakes (one of their specialities) although some have been better than others. Â Probably that's a result of whether the pancakes are poured from a new bowl or the end of the bowl (where the cherry's have settled). Â All have been good but let's face it...I'd rather have lots of cherry's to savor instead of just a few.
A very good restaurant which I highly recommend.
My husband and I really enjoy this restaurant for breakfast! We think it's very charming and has that home-cooked meal we love. We typically stay at the Edgewater Resort next door so they gives us $10 vouchers for breakfast, which makes the meal extremely reasonable! Omelets, french toast, and cherry pancakes are very good! We also like the yogurt with fresh cherries. Very friendly wait staff and great views of the water. Family-friendly, too.
Review Source:Had the fish boil here. Â The show's good. Â Food-wise, remember, this is lake fish, not ocean fish so just bound to be fishier. Â I liked the potatoes in butter and the cole slaw. Â Great bread but even though it's a buffet line, after everyone gets their food, they immediately put everything away even for the last seating so you can't get seconds. Â
Cherry pie was a bit sweet. Â I guess if you're a tourist looking for a fish boil experience, just remember you have 30 minutes to eat, that's it. Â come for the spectacle and experience, not gourmet fare in a relaxing environment. Â Good thing they do offer to take the bones off your fish for you.
I have had only breakfast at the Old Post Office Restaurant and it was very good. It is your basic breakfast fair with the addition of pancakes, waffles and French Toast. Very good portions  and priced well. I have not had dinner there mostly because Ephraim is dry and I like to have a glass of wine with dinner.
Review Source:Had a fish boil here. The best! I've had many fish boils in my life and this was the best tasting fish I had at any of them. The potatoes and cherry pie for dessert complemented an excellent meal. Earl tells you the whole story when you're sitting around the fish boil. Recommend to all to try if you've never had a fish boil.
Review Source:This was the first restaurant we saw as we walked from our hotel. Â We had no reservation for the fish boil but I guess we came at the right time. The hostess immediately took our name and said 25 minutes till you eat. Â
Great fish, what else can you say about a fish boil? Anything is good smothered in melted butter...and that cherry pie for dessert!!! Â MMMMMMMMM! Â
I wanted to do breakfast here but hubby is a cheap ass so I was stuck with grocery store cinnamon rolls and scones from the hotel's continental breakfast. Â Next time though...
