This has to be the coolest club I've ever patronized. Â I was visiting the Weston area, out from California, and would never have dreamed that I would find such a great place to hang out. Â It's difficult to describe the ambiance, but since I'm told that it's and old prohibition era speakeasy, it felt a little forbidden and fun. Â The entertainment was top-notch. Â The bands I saw when I was there are bands that you usually see in larger venues. Â I couldn't have been more impressed. Â The staff was friendly and kind and the service was excellent. Â I'm conditioned to the high prices that go along with living in the late great golden state (California), so I couldn't have been more surprised to see the tab. Â It was very affordable. Â There was a great selection handcrafted beers that were all somewhat unique, but fairly priced. Â It was just a great experience from beginning to end. Â I'm disappointed that I have no future plans to return to the Weston area, but I would consider going back to hang out at O'Malley's Pub if given the opportunity to return to that part of the country. Â It's that great of a place! Â The only criticism I have is that it's tight quarters, so there isn't a lot of table/seating space. Â The tight quarters are also part of the charm of being at this club. Â Get there early if you want a seat. Â I'm sure you'll find a good spot; however, if you're like me, a seat isn't necessary to enjoy this club. Â You'll have an equally great time whether your sitting down or standing and and watching the band. Â There is a lot of good energy happening at O'Malleys!
Review Source:O'Malley's is a bar I would always want to go to, but don't want to stay at long.
Ah, the smell of cool, subterranean air sure is refreshing. Sure, maybe it is a little dank, but it is more like the smell of a rainy spring day mixed with old library, accounting for the years and years of history and character. That is, of course, until the smoke hits you. Ugh. Yup, people still get to smoke here. You weren't ready for that, were ya, city boy? Yeah, me either.
Well, it is a bar, after all. It seems like it should be more of a museum with beer, but the actual feel of the bar seems completely ignorant of its surroundings. The aforementioned smoke. The random and sometimes-too-loud live music. The flashy modern stage and lights. Just weird.
Still, it is worth it, though I'd recommend an afternoon when the bar is less packed, less smoked out, and less likely to feature that devilish rock and roll music the kids are listening to these days. It'll make the experience more pristine, as such an amazing setting deserves.
Others have mentioned how coming here feels like escaping to some far away, secret place, and it does -- but chain smokers and rockers tend to jar you back into reality. But let's be honest: those of us that value most the transporting charm of this place are the ones visiting a few times a year from somewhere out of town. In the meantime, they have a bar to keep open.
So, now that you can't hear and can't breathe, what'll you have? Well, the Weston Brewing Company beer is on tap here, and it has gotten better with time. I've got been a huge fan of a lot of them, but I'm partial to the Porter.
They have a few food options down here, but don't eat them. They're just what they can serve out of a crockpot with their limited space. Go back to reality above ground for better food, either at the restaurant next door or another of the very tasty Weston options.
When you step into O'Malley's you no longer feel like you are in the Kansas City metro area. Â You may feel like you are in Ireland because of the band that's playing or you may feel like you are in a small ski town because you're deep underground in a cave. Â Either way, you are in one cool place!
I went to O'Malley's on Friday evening with three of my girlfriends. Â We sat at a table in one of the little alcoves along the wall on the lower level. Â Our server was energetic and friendly and was always attentive. Â Three of us got beer and our non beer drinker friend went with one of their specialty drinks, which was basically a frozen raspberry margarita. Â She really enjoyed it. Â I decided to go with the O'Malley's Cream Ale. Â It was light with a hint of sweetness similar in taste to that of cream soda and oh so delicious. Â If you are hungry, eat before you come here. Â Though there is food on the menu, it's slim pickings. Â You get the option of corned beef sandwich, pulled pork sandwich, or an Irish sausage on a bun. Â We did not get food so I can't tell you if it's actually good or not.
The atmosphere is great. Â Besides being in a cave, the band adds to the cool vibe of the place. Â I'm not sure of the name of the band that we saw but they were really good. Â People were up dancing; many attempting to dance a drunken Irish jig. Â You definitely feel yourself becoming engaged and find yourself clapping along or slapping your leg. Â The music is very loud and it's hard to have a conversation.
The only downfall of O'Malley's is the $5 cover which I hear is for non-Weston residents only, the smoke from cigarettes, pipes, and cigars, and the fact that it seemed to be pretty darn cold in there! Â
It is definitely worth the drive. Â It's a fun experience and the beer is really good!
You must go here even if it's just once to experience it. Its a regional institution. Â The pub is several feet underground so don't come in high heels! It gets smoky inside in the pub as well, as people are allowed to smoke indoors in Missouri. Other than that the vibe is great, the beers are very good and the novelty of the place being underground remains even after several visits.
There's a restaurant above ground run by the same people, and the food is good too. You can generally order the same beers you order at the pub. First time I came for lunch and had a very good salad, the portion is generous, i had to doggybag half of it and it made a very good snack later for the pet!
I had beef with mashed potatoes for dinner the next time I was there. The mashed potato was smooth and tasty but could do with more of the tasty gravy. The beer is awesome.
Both times I had the lager soup, which is soup brewed with its Irish beer. Both times it was very good, flavorful, I just wish there was more of it in the bowl.
O'Malleys is the best kept secret in KC for 170 years! I love this place, as it is everything you want a random Irish pub to be and more. Yes it is smoky! Yes it is loud! Yes it is a bit like spelunking in a cave! But it is so worth it! The beer is cold the music hot and the paranormal activity is off the chart! It is mind boggling to think about how many beers have been downed at this place. Irishfest is a blast, but Corey and his friends rock it all year! And they have a cool bed and breakfast right next door so you can stumble to bed! Amazing treasure hidden in Weston!
Review Source:So much fun! I only went to the pub but man it is awesome venue. Pub is underground in what is an old speakeasy from the 1800s. Great house brews and a pretty respectable selection of other drinks. Â The food on the pub is one sandwich and a nacho, however you can go up top to grab some good food to go from the restaurant till 9. Â
If you are sensitive to smoke I wouldn't suggest the pub, and you might want to bring some light ear plugs cause it can get rather LOUD down there. (there is an initial entry room separate from the main bar that's much quieter though) Besides those minor things this a great bar and a ton of fun. They had an amazing band called Flanagan's right hook when I went. I highly suggest O'Malley's. Btw, get here a bit early if you want a seat inside the main room, but even if you don't its a great time.
More fun than you'd think you can fit into a cave!
I'm going to review O'Malley's and the American Bowman restaurant separately..well, because they're two totally different places in the same location.
First up, the super fun O'Malley's Pub. We've graced this place with our presence a couple of times this month and have loved every minute of it. It's not close--about 45 minutes to an hour away from our house. But, when it's 110 degrees in the shade and you don't own a pool, what else are you supposed to do other than drink ice cold local beer in a chilly cave?
Beer & Food
The beer is excellent. My favorite is the Rip Van Winkle which is an 8% tasty brew that can really sneak up on you when you're hanging out drinking it all night. So be careful with this one. The others are good---this one is just my favorite. We also tried two of their mixed drinks called Willow and then a Peach something... Both were very tasty, so there's plenty of options for those of you that (pasha!) don't like beer.
If you're there long enough to get hungry, you can run up to the restaurant to get carry out or you can order a sandwich or nachos in the cave. The corned beef is to die for.
Entertainment
You'll want to check the schedule at http://www.westonirish.c… before heading over there. Weekends feature a couple of different types of music---in the upper or lower bar. On Friday and Saturday night 7/28, we enjoyed the Irish rock from Connacht Town http://www.connachttown.…. They had us laughing, singing and swinging beer glasses all night. They also took the time to shake hands and say hello to most of the people in the bar or anyone that wanted to chat. Their music was great, but their performance is stellar.
Staff
The waitresses are super busy, so try to be kind and stay in their smile zone. :) The bartenders are also pleasant as well as all the staff I encountered. From the guy at the door all the way to the bottom floor. They're grateful for your business and it shows. Well done O'Malley's.
Last note:
Girls, this is specifically for you. This bar is in a cave. We're talking uneven surfaces and loads of stairs. If you want to guarantee the best time---wear shoes that are at least tolerable for the trek---or have a spare pair in the car. Don't ruin your night because you're unprepared. The restrooms are at the top and you're drinking a lot of beer. You will be walking/climbing multiple times.
Everyone else: The beer is potent. Watch yourself if you're not planning to stay the night in town.
ENJOY!!
Ladies, a friendly warning, if you are going to see a band in the depths of the underground...wear comfy shoes. The stairs and ramp are difficult to manuever in heels especially if you have been drinking.
Another warning, if you are a non-smoker this place may not be for you. Remember Missouri is not non-smoking. Trust me, all the ceiling fans in the world would not help rid this place of smoke. I thought someone was in the stall in the ladies room barfing but no she was almost having an asthma attack because of the smoke.
Okay, why have I tolerated all of the above and high whiskey prices? Because one of my favorite local bands plays here. I have also had good service every time I have been here too. Â Oh yeah and the beer is quite tasty! I had the stout and it was excellent. Â I haven't tried the food from the pub grub part of the menu. But my friend ordered chicken nachos and they looked and smelled really good.
I wish my visits were more frequent but personally I am not a fan of cigarette smoke. Otherwise I have a fine time at O'Malley's.
Did you know there was a 5 story building in Weston? Â Of course not, it's upside down... Sort of. Â Welcome to O'Malley's Pub in Weston! Â
O'Malley's is in an old subterranean bunker that is stone which makes it a perfect summer hang out as it is always cool due to it's depth and stone walls. Â The staff here is wonderful. Â All friendly and I have yet to see less than a smile on any face there. Â My recommendation is to go on St. Pat's. Â They have one of the best Irish Fests in the KC area. Â If you can't make it on St. Pat's, go on a Friday or Saturday when they are host to local Irish favorite Tullamore. Â
Great Irish music, typical pub fare (nothing fancy or that makes you go wow, and good beer. Â It doesn't get any better than that, right? Â WRONG!
If you like beer, join the Mug Club. Â for $35 you get a 32 oz. mug filled with your favorite draft and an official O'Malley's T-Shirt. Â I hear if you bring the glass back, you get cheap refills, but I never remember so if you aver come to a BBQ at my house you will see my set of mugs. ;-)
There is a ton to see around Weston, but I think O'Malley's is the true standout amongst them.
I am a huge fan of local beer. Â So now that we have settled this point onto the review. Â Where else can you drink great beer, eat and listen to Irish music two stories underground in a former civil war ammo bunker? Â I am going to say that combo is pretty rare. Â The beer here is well done. Â The only selection I have made that I did not care for was the chili pepper beer. Â This freaking beer was so spicy I needed a glass of cold water to go with it. Â Yea washing down your beer with a cold glass of water. Â I know the technical folks will say you should have had a glass of milk or piece of bread. Â Well those weren't options.
We have gone a few times and the entertainment on all occasions was awesome. Â It can get packed so go early if you want a table. Â Be prepared to get yourself underground and back up via some crazy steps. Â If you are not too drunk you should be fine. Â If you show late you will get held outside. Â Not to worry you can sit on the porch next door and enjoy the same beer and dinner. Â The food has always been pretty good and the service top notch. Â We love the patio and the bunker both.
The brewmasters here cherish their art and do a great job. Â Kudos to them for producing a great local product. Â Located in Weston, MO the downtown area is quaint an situated right on the river. Â A short drive in winter takes you to snow creek. Â There are vineyards and they have great festivals here. Â Especially for St. Pats. Â Cheek it out. Â If you drink too much get a room at a B&B right next door.
Fabulous pub!! Â You just can't beat the atmosphere, the music is incredible and who doesn't love some handsome bartenders. Â LOL Â Honestly, I fell in love with Irish Pubs because of this place. Â The people who treck down many flights of stairs are there for laid back fun with their friends. Â If you catch a night with a stage full of musicians, you will not be disappointed. Â For such a small space, the accoustics are great and it doesn't get overly loud.. which is oddly fantastic. Â -- If it's great pub food with a huge selection, this isn't the place you are looking for. Â Great beer (or mixed drinks, which I prefer) and light pub food is more like it.
The only downfall (which I can't fault them for or knock their stars down for) is that the restrooms are all the way back upstairs...but once you get up there, they are nice, clean and worth the trip. Â ;)
I have to correct some of the reviews. Â This is for O'Malley's PUB. Â Emphasis on PUB.
That is the location where reviewers are stating is 60' below ground in the rounded off 'cave like' area. Pretty much the ONLY food you can get in there if you order food is a corned beef sandwich basket with chips.
Some of you are reviewing a separate business-
For those talking about food in an old house or in an outdoor seating area that is the American Bowman Restaurant that is above- yet attached.
The specialty beer is a product of Weston Brewing Company-another companion business.
I have drank all over the world in just about every different kind of old venue you can come up with: the ancient caves of Petra, a centuries old cellar in London, even old GW's pub in Alexandria (George Washington, not GWBush). Â O'Malley's ranks right there with them! Â I have eaten at the restaurant above the pub and thought it was fine, but prefer to venture down the narrow stairs into the there old arched room, low-lit, and smoke filled. Â Now if you have a problem with spaces, you may not want to think about where you are, but for the rest of us, this spot is fantastic. Â Now don't go expecting some amazing beer list, go for the atmosphere. Â The local beers they do have are pretty good, so be sure to try them out. Â I have lucked out before and had a traditional Irish band playing. Â Now please realize that an old Irish shanty is pretty much musical crack to me! Â Add a few beers and you may just get that story you were hoping for from your night out! Â In true tradition, the band was uber involved with the crowd and us with them. Â One of the funnest nights you could hope for! Â
I have heard a couple of different histories about this actual location, so if you really want to know, perhaps an inquiry with the staff on your visit may help. Â If you are looking for a great place to just spend a Saturday afternoon, this wood be a great option. Â They do serve food, as I had mentioned earlier, which is pretty much pub food, and the staff does a great job. Â In short, this is one of my favorite pubs in the KC area!
This is one of the greatest bars I have been to when it comes to atmosphere and friendliness. We visited the pub before (And after) the tour, which is REALLY neat and if you go to the pub beforehand you can taste all the samples before and you get to try them again after. They allow beer drinking on the tour which is also different than any other tour I have been on so get a pint before you head out.
I didn't have any food, but the beer was very good, the bartenders were extremely helpful with the first timers (me) and the atmosphere was fun. I will be back.
This place is all about atmosphere. My brother took me here on my visit to KC. I'd never been to a bar like this. The music was okay, the beer was pretty good (I didn't try any food), but the atmosphere here is amazing-an underground Irish pub/brewery in the middle of nowhere. It is definitely worth the drive.
[Edit] I went back and this time had the O'Malley's Cream Stout-it was great!
This place was just down right fun.
Went here over the weekend to see a friend of mines band. I have heard of this place from several people, so I finally made it out there.
The atmosphere is pretty awesome, I believe it's like almost 60ft underground. It smells of an old basement and smoke. Food was basically Pub Grub but when you had a number of Guinesses as I did, the food was good at the time. Â
Our waitress was as sweet as could be dealing with the 7 of us who had quite a bit to drink ;) Â The beer selection is decent so I was happy. Â As for the crowd everyone was super laid back and just let loose, met some interesting folks which is always fun. Â
So I definitely recommend making the drive out to this place. It is a bit of drive, but worth it IMO.
Every O'Malley's beer (on tap & bottled) is unique & amazing, and brewed right there in Weston by the Weston Brewing Company! Â They offer year-round beers, as well as original seasonal brews. Â Currently, my favorite is O'Malley's Cream Ale Irish Style & Weston Ruddy Wheat. Â They also offer an assortment of other beers, the usual and some from abroad, including Magners Irish Cider; as well as specialty drinks, the usual cocktails and some wines. Â O'Malley's also serves some food - hearty sandwiches and other pub-grub staples with an Irish flare.
An entertainment fixture at O'Malley's is cult favorite Bob Reeder, who performs on Sunday evenings from 3-9pm. Â On Friday and Saturday evenings, Irish and other bands from around the area and beyond will entertain you to your heart's content. Â Some recent examples include The Three Dollar Band, Kelly, and Tullamore.
It's unfortunate this wondrous pub is only open on the weekends! Â But that also makes it more special in a way I suppose - more "untouched".
The pub is located in 3 cellars dug deep below ground, which were used to store the brews when first built in 1842. Â The unique, musty and pungent aroma of this underground pub may be an acquired taste for some, but always leads one back to enjoy its snugness & savor in comfort its Irish-style libations and entertainment.
You're sure to return again and again to O'Malley's and come away each time with fond memories - I got engaged there, go to the Weston Irish Fest held there every year, and just celebrated a family wedding this past weekend there. Â It's a wee bit o' traditional Ireland in the heartland!
We went to the restaurant and had a great dinner with a great server, Betty, the place was busy but Betty did a great job. When we finished our meal and beers and paid our tab Betty informed us that if we are going to the bar that our receipt would take care of our cover. At the bar the door man informed us that our receipt was only good for one cover because we only ordered 1 entree. Well we had an entree, salad, soup, appetizer and beers, since they do not offer a vegetarian entree i had salad and an appetizer. Apparently my dinner didn't count for our cover. Awesome, so instead of going into the bar for a shot and a 6--pack to take home we left, the door man was not friendly at all really put us off. So for the restaurant 5stars! For the bar? I don't really care to spend my money at a place that doesn't want me there. The cover was only $5 but after our encounter we decided to spend our money closer to home.
Review Source:I can only rate the beer, as I have not tried the food at O'Malleys. Â The only one I tried was the Fall Harvest. Â It is a nice brown ale with a nutty fruity flavor.
The downsides bar is also awesome. Â Great time, with live music. Â The only problem is they are only open on the weekends.
I'm not a beer drinker, but hubby is and he had a sampler from the brewery and he loved every beer they offered. Â He really found the hot pepper beer unique and tasty. Â The food we all ordered was delicious and the service friendly and prompt. Â
If you're in the area it's well worth making the time to eat a meal here.
The vet called early and wanted to keep the dog another day, so suddenly our Saturday was wide open. My wife needed a distraction from the ailing pooch, so I suggested heading up to poke around Weston. We have never been before and thought it would be fun. We popped into a *winery* - that was blaa. Two rules of thumb I have: don't make wine from apples, and wine shouldn't burn on its way down your throat. I'd rather drink pink Chablis while listening to the Carpenter's than drink this stuff. Onward. So we scurried out of there and spied O'Malley's Pub at the bottom of the hill. There were a lot of cars in the parking lot, but no one in site. We hung around for a bit when a passerby took pity on us, I suppose, and said if we were looking for beers we needed to go through the red door in the out building and take the stairs down. And to keep going until we got to the cave. So we did. O'Malley's is located underground in a cavern which was built in the mid 1840's and originally stored beer. It is now decked out in fine Irish regalia and makes you feel like you're in a WWII era bunker. We threw down some local brew and listened to live Scotch/Irish music. This was just pure fun. Who would have thought we'd stumble into an underground cavern transformed into an Irish pub out in Weston? No me. Go. Drink. Enjoy.
Review Source:I have been to O'Malley's a couple times and I have to say I enjoy it there. I went there for St.Paddy's day this year and it was awesome. I would recommend trying a flight so you can taste about 5 of the beers they make there. I preferred the DropKick Ale which is what they made for the KC Wizards soccer team.
I also found it cool maneuvering through the underground pub's twisting and sometimes narrow passageways; I felt like Frodo Baggins in the Shire.
I have also had the food there. The fish and chips are above average. The last time I went there I had some kind of ham and cheddar cheese pie which was pretty good in my opinion. I find the food to be reasonably priced and above normal pub food in this area.
I definitely recommend trying the place mainly for the experience. The pub is really old and a remaining cool chunk of history. If you have a chance to go there for Saint Paddy's definitely do so. You will not regret it.
My wife and I both ordered the IPA. Â Far from an IPA, more like an Amber. Â Good malt color and malt flavor, very light Hoppy flavor almost zero Hop Aroma/finish. Â Food was good. Â Ordered the Ham Pye. Â Similar to a ham and cheddar quiche. Â Atmosphere was great, sat outside on a beautiful day! Â Would go back.
Review Source:We didn't go on the pub tour but we did have lunch and the food experience was so so.
The outside seating atmosphere is nice and relaxed. We ordered a beer each, fire wings, omalley sandwich, and the burger. The entrees come with either a soup or a salad and both of us decided to get the salad. The salad was the best part of the meal - the special dressing that they make there is delish. The next good thing was the omalley sandwich - it was really yummy.
The fire wings were not spicy and weren't fully cooked. As for the burger - it said on the menu that it comes with cheddar cheese. What they SHOULD have put on the menu is that it comes with a SCOOP of cheddar cheese concoction. I mean it was disgusting...I've never seen cheese scooped. Anyways...the burger was huge but was so so on flavor.
Both the sandwich and the burger came with a whole bunch of fries - these were also good.
The service was friendly and timely. Overall a good experience and I think in a town with limited food options this is a safe choice...make sure to get the omalley sandwich if you go. Also, the prices are pretty good for the amount of food that you get.
Toured the brewery and had a great time!
Didn't have any of the food but the beer and atmosphere are great, it was near St. Patrick's day so we had a "Leapin' Leprechaun", which is a good for a light beer, and had the 'flight'. Â I usually hate at least one of the beers in any given flight, but all these were at least drinkable.
As I said, the atmosphere is great. Â The bar is 55ft underground in the old lagering caves (to maintain the temp. before there were refrigerators), and it's really pretty amazing. Â Also they apparently have a lot of live music, and even had 'Adam' there playing while we drank on a random Saturday afternoon.
Finally, the store for the brewery was impressive in that the package beers were only $1 each, less if you bought 48 of them (we did).
As others have noted, because of the unique location it is unlikely you will be able to stumble out of this bar without needing stitches, so imbibe judiciously.
PS: 5th star is likely if the food is as good as it looked! I'll let you know when we return.
So much fun! Â Cheap and tasty cocktail concoctions, local brews, and pub grub. Â I had this delicious grapefruit midori mix. Â The night we were there, the colonial bhoys were playing and they are awesome. Â If my liver wasn't already maxed out from an afternoon of wine tasting, I could see the night turning into quite the party. Â This place can't be missed on a trip to Weston.
Review Source:We stopped here to look around and see about a tour, but no tours were going on when we were in. Â No problem, we just went into the restaurant to have a beer. Â They had a sampler, with 5 beers on tap, I was glad about this. Â The cream ale was good as was their stout. Â We also had a "rasher" appetizer (bacon, horseradish, cream cheese with crackers). Â It was good stuff for sure. Â I'd like to go back and try a meal sometime. Â They had all the standard Irish fare (bangers & mash, shepherd's pie, fish & chips) plus loads of sandwiches and salads, something for everyone. Â
Service was a tad slow, but very pleasant and helpful. Â They also sell whatever's in bottles for $6/six-pack or $20/case. Â It seems like a good place to sit and have some pints during an afternoon. Â 1 hour here was not enough for us.
awesome little Irish bar that is 55 feet below ground. Â I believe they use to store their beer here but turned the cave into a bar down at the bottom. Â
caution to the ladies who want to wear high heels, walking down is very difficult, Â walkup drunk would be insane.
Night we were there was a live band.
Worth the drive out north of KC, MO.
The restaurant was good eats as well. Â wish we had time to stay at the bar. the restaurant is a old house with dinning in each of the rooms. Â You could tell the house was old. Â
Good crafted brew there as well.
