We stopped in on our way to Houston and had both a savory pie and a sweet pie each. All the savory pies are made to order while the sweet pies can be made in advance. This means you can pick up a dozen frozen sweet pies from the freezer at a big discount but flavor selection and quantities vary widely.
We had the pizza or pepperoni pie and the broccoli cheese pie. Both pies were fresh and hot out of the oil with a lovely browned crust. I thought I read online that the broccoli was supposed to have chicken in it, but I never noticed any while eating. The pizza had a nice quantity of pepperoni, tomato sauce and cheese.
Our sweet pies were the coconut and the apricot. They had run out of apricot, so that was made fresh while eating the meat pie. The apricot had a great tart flavor and gooey texture. The coconut was still fairly warm with a rich creamy custard filling. I definitely plan to visit the Dallas location, which is inside a Baker's Rib BBQ restaurant.
We stopped here on the way home to Houston from Dallas and I'm so glad we did. I normally hate empanada-esque foods so I was skeptical. We got apple, chocolate, and pecan. With one bite of the chocolate, I was sold. It's hard to describe but it really DOES taste like an inverted pie....not an empanada. All three were delicious. And I'm also grateful this place is nowhere near us because it could get dangerous!
Review Source:My family and I stopped by this little place because I had to use the restroom in the gas station next door. So I decided to run in and see what they had, I am a sucker for things like that. So I go in and immediately is overwhelmed by the smell of hot bread and meat. I noticed the meat pie sign but figured I should get us the fruit filling pies.
I ordered two apple and once lemon and they were steaming out and gooey and great. A I really wish I had also gotten a meat pie so this review could be full circle. The bread is so hot and perfect and the filling is so light, to where it's just enough.
A little difficult to eat and drive but worth the effort!
A colleague and I popped by this hidden gem while getting some gas at the station directly adjacent to the store. We couldn't resist the schmaltzy larger-than-life poster of a granny looking lady (presumably the founder) who was practically seducing us with her lure of homemade, made to order fried goodness.
Though honestly, you would have thought we'd have seen straight through her artery-clogging come-hither pastries! (We had just spent the entire previous day doing enough damage to our cholesterol and digestive systems at the Texas State Fair). But, no.
So, quite happily, we got a fried pie a piece: she ordered the beef and vegetable, I got the Tex Mex. Both of them were wrapped and fried on the spot, and the sweet girl working the counter warned us, quite sensibly, to let the pastries sit a bit before we attempted to eat them because they'd be very hot. I couldn't COMPLETELY resist, so I scalded my mouth maybe just a little. But it was worth it. It was sooo worth it.
Definately a homey place. Â There are pretty much Texas Empanadas. Â I had the brisket, comfort food, and pecan fried pie. Â All 3 were tasty and at 3 dollars, pretty good sized. Â They make it fresh to order so quality is a plus. Â The brisket was tender with a nice tangy barbecue sauce mixed in. Â Comfort food has a nice blend of potatoes, eggs, cheese, sour cream, and sausage. Â The pecan fried pie was was really good. Â Imagine a fried pie crust with pecan pie filling. Â Yeah it's pretty much amazing.
Review Source:This place is definitely a place to stop by if you're ever driving from Houston to Dallas or Dallas to Houston. It's connected to a gas station so you can't miss it.
They have everything from breakfast, lunch, dinner and dessert pies. They look like empanadas and have that feel and taste of a hot pocket. Not expensive at all and one pie is actually fulfilling but since it was my first time I decided to get a variety of flavors.
Chocolate Pie - 4/5 (super sweet!)
Pecan Pie - 5/5 (super sweet!)
Spinach & Mushroom Pie - 4/5
Pepperoni Pie - 2/5 (had very little meat and too much sauce)
Pulled pork Pie - 5/5
Brisket Pie - 5/5
This will be my new stopping point when traveling on highway 45.
This is fun, on-the-road food.  I didn't expect that I'd enjoy it so much, (though I felt guilty  after consuming so many calories).  They're not the same consistency as McD fried pies; the pastry reminds me more of the pastry in a chicken pot pie.  But neither here nor there, they are good!  We tried the b/fast pies (bacon/eggs) and ordered spinach/mushrooms for lunch.  The counter staff was polite and I was told you can buy these frozen by the dozen, which is much cheaper.  It was also recommended to reheat directly on the oven rack, as any contact w/ a baking dish will render that section soggy.
Review Source:We looked up this restaurant on yelp and discovered good reviews, so we decided to stop on our way back to Houston from Dallas.
We ordered a pulled pork, bacon, egg, and cheese, spinach and mushroom, and two chocolate pies for desert. Â
The pulled pork was sweet and spicy; the bacon, egg, and cheese was moist and cheesy, and the spinach and mushroom had a savory resemblance to a vegetarian British pie. Both chocolate pies were served warm, and tasted rich with just the right amount of sweetness.
The pies resemble empanadas with flaky crusts.
The service at this restaurant even helped us get our keys, which we'd accidentally locked in our car. What a friendly group of folks.
Fried pies for the win! Â My husband said he was pretty sure he could feel his heart slowing down.
Excellent pies. Had the beef n vege pie. Plus Chocolate Pecan that was made fresh. Definitely let the pie cool before eating. Today the music was country so I suspect music is dependent upon who is managing the store. But the pies were good. My meat pie reminded I'd the meat pies in England I've had on visits there. So if ur looking for something different check this place out.
Review Source:Yes ma'am, gimme some fried pies!!! This almost makes the drive to Houston fun. The pumpkin pie is delish and I assume may be seasonal in the fall. The coconut cream is to die for! I can still taste the cream filling and the great dough. They have any fried pie imaginable. I wish I'd gotten some for the road. The reviewer who mentioned the lude hip hop music had me intrigued but there was soft elevator music playing on the background while two young girls got down with the pies. What a treat and I am so glad we found this place.
Review Source:On the way from Houston to Dallas if you decide you need to stop for food but want to avoid the typical fast food options off of the highway, you can always stop in for a fried pie instead.
There are plenty of options as far as what sort of pie you want. Fruit, chocolate, or throw some meat in there! There is even a sugar free option if you want to slightly delay the inevitable diabetes.
I was not aware it was possible to be a fried pie snob but this was not the best fried pie I have ever had. It was so much better than stopping at a McDonalds. But it did not knock and/or rock my socks off.
My family and I were on our way home from Dallas and of course, my daughter needed a bathroom break. Â So we pulled into the gas station. Â Next to the gas station, we saw a cute poster with the grandmother of the Original Fried Pie Shop. Â Oh yes! Â I love fried pies!
I took my daughter in and we all ended up taking bathrooms breaks and washed our hands. Â Afterwards, we stepped inside the shop. Â They served more than just fruit pies. Â My hubby end up getting the apple pie, my son wanted the pulled pork, my daughter wanted the brisket pie and I went with the spinach mushroom. After paying for my order, I had to step out of the shop. Â Whatever radio station they had set on was not the type of music i wanted my children to listen too. Â To my surprise, every song was a very inappropriate hip hop song. Â I told my kids that we'll go browse the gift section next door and come back. Â We browsed for about 10 minutes and decided to go back to the shop. Â Our order was not ready yet but you can see that it was stilled being deep fried. Another 2 minutes passed by and it was ready. Â The pies were a lot bigger than I anticipated and this was not the type of meal we can have neatly in the car. Â My hubby opted to stay in the dining area. Â Again, the music was driving me nuts!
We asked the lady behind the counter if they can either lower the music or changed the station. Â She agreed to lower it and we decided to sit in the corner. Â We grab plates, napkins and other utensils and the pies were all delicious. Â As we sat there to enjoy our meal, we saw a fairly good lunch crowd come in. Â Again, I can still hear the awful music and was hoping my kids were not paying attention. Â Every person that walked in, left with their pies.
I'm definitely a fan of their pies, just not their ambiance.
My fiancee and I were driving from Dallas to Houston and stopped in Buffalo, TX... Â We were going to get something to eat at about 10:00am and found our selves in front of The Original Fried Pie Shop... Â We thought that we would give it a try...
I did not have high expectations - I mean, these are fried pies... Â However, these are FRIED PIES...
They have quite a variety and, in only 3 minutes, they can create a fried pie made to your order.
I got the Sausage, Egg and Cheese. Â My fiancee got the Spinach & Mushroom. Â We got a half sweet potato and half pumpkin for later.
These fried pies were very good. Â The crust was flaky and the ingredients were very flavorful.
Stop and try this place... Â You will not be disappointed...
