Not very good. Worse than OK.
Not all meals are "family style" you have to pay extra for that. I would not recommend this restaurant and will not visit this restaurant again. Â Prices are very high, we paid almost $40 for two at lunch time.
I had the chicken schnitzel and the grease from frying it was running around on the plate. Â The spaetzle was very soggy and bland. Â They don't serve fried potatoes any longer they have went to a mashed variety which was the only thing that was served that I enjoyed. Â
If you are looking for a German meal I would recommend that you save your money and visit another restaurant.
My husband and I have been to the Ox Yoke interstate many, many times over the last ten years. Â Let me just say in the last two years we have been very disappointed...not in the food, but the service or should I say lack thereof. Â We ordered our food and drinks. Â We received our drinks (water, iced tea and wine). Â After 40 minutes, we still did not have our food! Â The waitress never refilled our drinks or even bothered to ask if we would like a refill. Â We never received bread or salad. Â After seeing our frustration, she stopped to apologize for the wait (and I should mention three other parties were seated AFTER us and were served their food before us although they had a different server) said it would only be a moment longer. Â Well, 10 minutes later we were still waiting with no drink refills (water and iced tea) and no salad or bread. Â We decided to leave and go elsewhere. Â I hope they enjoyed our food. Â BTW, we ordered the special of the day. Â I think she forgot to place our order. Â We will never go back. Â That is totally unacceptable.
Review Source:Yep, +1 for the "just OK" crowd. Â To be fair, for a place just off the interstate (I'm talking about the Ox Yoke Innterstate branch here, btw), with a rather large menu, you should probably be expecting a fairly high proportion of frozen and canned components. Â I had fried fish, and it was extremely overcooked. Â The beets are fine, standard pickled beets-- they were possibly the best part of the meal overall. Â
I'd say it's worth driving 200 more feet to the Colony Village restaurant right next door, which serves a very similar menu with very similar prices, but the food was a bit better  (though the pies might be a little better at the Ox Yoke- the filling was not as good, but the crust was less obviously from frozen)
This was the worst restaurant experience I've ever had. The wait staff was rude, the food was very expensive for food that was heavily processed and canned, and the menu was confusing. Both the schnitzel and spaetzle were soggy. The gravy and beets were canned, and the distinction between "plated" and "family style" on the menu was not clear, so I was charged an extra $3.50 for the spaetzle which I though was included in the plated price. They are charging $11.00 just for the meat. You'd be better off going to McDonald's.
Review Source:I concur with the "just ok" comment.
Ate there twice in the last two days (for the first time). Â The first day I had the Jagerschnitzel and spaetzle. Â It was good. Â Not great, but good. Â The spaetzle was fantastic, but a very small portion. Â The service was kind of rude.
The second day I had the Westphalia Schnitzel family-style. Â It was ok. Â The cuts of meat were a less then great quality. Â The spaetzle, only a day later, was doughy and unappetizing... though I got a lot more of it. Â The mashed potatoes and gravy were good. Â (I should add that the gravy tastes as if it is canned, but still good) Â Service was good.
Why do German restaurants always try to get away with using poor quality cuts of meat? Â German restaurants in Germany don't do this, and I have experienced only ONE German restaurant in the US that served quality meat.
Anyway, prices are a tad high, but it is something of a specialty place in a touristy area. Â The atmosphere is a little sad and dingy. Â The place's heyday has definitely passed it by.
I don't really feel the need to ever go back. Â I will seek out a better German restaurant... if I can find one.
It was okay, just okay. Let me elaborate...
We are moving from the Northeast US to the Southwest US so we were open to trying new places and foods. This place was the most expensive stop we'd made thus far but there was a gas station nearby (reason for even pulling over to begin with) and we were all hungry and in need of a break. For a small place located next to an abandoned and run down motel complex with not much traffic the prices were high. Not much variety either.
I will add that the food didn't taste too bad and the portions were okay as well. Nothing fantastic though.
My fiance and I had a late breakfast here a few days ago as part of a cross-country road trip. Â We shared strawberry pancakes, hash browns, and a cheese, green pepper, and onion omelette. Â The food was delicious and kept us satisfied for many hours. Â Service was a little slow and fresh orange juice would have been nice, but we would still highly recommend Ox Yoke to anyone passing by.
Review Source:I'll save my judgment of the main Ox Yoke Inn, since I actually went to the Ox Yoke Interstate Restaurant in Williamsburg. Â I was not impressed with most of the food that I had at Ox Yoke Interstate. Â The sausage was poorly prepared, and the sauerkraut was canned. Â (How does a German-influenced restaurant serve canned sauerkraut?!)
The only redeeming quality of the Interstate restaurant were the pies. Â I recommend the Banana Creme Pie.
Suggestion-- skip the meal. Â Have dessert only.
