Pagliai's is one of the few places where I can get anchovies on a pizza. More importantly, it is one of the few places I can get anchovies on a pizza stacked high with cheese. Critically, it's about as close to Chicago pizza as you can come without going to Chicago.
Unfortunately, I don't go here all that much, because it is "pricey". It's hard to justify spending more on a smaller pizza--especially because pizza is one of those food commodities that one thinks of as cheap. They've got sandwiches and other stuff, but I don't think any of those things compare to their pizza.
Verdict? Awesome pizza, but costly. Hence, three stars.
If you are traveling through this area, this is a must stop place for Pizza. Â It is quite literally the best pizza that I've had. Â Recently went back after being overseas for several years, and it had not changed. Â The pizza is made with real dough made fresh, not frozen. Â The ingredients that they use are not just bought at a grocery store and chopped up, but everything is fresh and even the sausage is made there. Â Ordered a deep dish Italian Sausage, Pepperoni and Mushroom pizza with extra cheese. Â To watch them make the pizza is an experience in itself. Â We called in about 15 minutes before we arrived (we were travelling down the interstate), and the pizza was still in the oven. Â You could see them checking it every 20 seconds or so to make sure that it was cooked to perfection. Â When you pull the pizza apart, the cheese just strings out in a way that cannot be matched by any pizza chain. Â When you take your first bite, you KNOW that this is the real deal. Â You will NOT be disappointed.
Review Source:Its funny, but this is my favorite pizza restaurant in the world, probably because my kids have grown up eating here. Â We have always stopped here going to and from the lake, and we have never had a bad experience or poor food. Â The old place by the old WalMart was a dump, with naugahyde booths and a green TV, but the food was amazing, and the workers have always been so kind and helpful, even with toddlers throwing crackers on the floor. Â The "new" place has actually been open for years, and has a very tastefully decorated interior reminiscent of an Italian villa. Â If you have a big crowd, there are separate rooms and they always accomodate you quickly here. Â As soon as you walk in the door, to the right you see the kids rolling the dough and tossing the crust. Â The "kids" are the local teenagers that are always so clean, good-looking and hard-working. Â I have never had bad service here, and I just dont know how Mike and Jerry motivate and train these young people-they are just all very good servers and chefs. Â I actually look forward to seeing which pretty young girl will serve us-and I like pretty girls, so sue me. Â Anyway, the double crust pepperoni is the best New York style pizza you will eat ANYWHERE. Â The sausage and mushroom double crust is my second favorite, my middle son wont eat anything else. Â The chef salad is cool and crisp, and great to share. Â The deep dish is huge, and takes about a half hour to prepare. Â The spaghetti is also very good. Â The food is obviously prepared very well. Â Excellent value, great food, wonderful service. Â Thanks to everyone who has ever worked here, I have enjoyed every bite.
