New managers- Blue Plate special the rice was cold and the meat in the dish was nothing more than a burger- pie was serves ice cold no offer to warm up and despiite "original recipe" it was terrible. Burned and bland crust- Used to go there regularly under previous management doubt a second chance will be given to new management!
Review Source:We love visiting little towns on Route 66 and Atlanta is one of our favorites in Illinois. We've eaten at the Palms Grill many times as we passed through town on our various Route 66 trips. Their pies are wonderful! The place has a great atmosphere, decor and friendly wait staff. Highly recommended!
Review Source:My son and I stopped here as part of a Rt. 66 nostalgia tour - he's into cars and had never seen the Rt. 66 Museum in Pontiac. We loved the little town and its octagonal library and were charmed by the great food, cute decor and friendly service. We split two pieces of pie and considered taking more for the road, but since we had just had a big Thanksgiving dinner the day before, thought it better if we just came back another time! Definitely worth the visit - you won't be disappointed!
Review Source:Good breakfast at a great price!
We had Spam and Eggs, Veggie Skillet a piece of homemade pie and two drinks and it was under $20 with tax and tip!
I haven't had Spam in a while but I had a taste for it. Unlike what many people think, Spam is made from pork shoulder, not lips and assholes (Kelly!).
I used to eat Spam at my aunt's house many years ago so I needed to make it into a sandwich on rye bread with pickles and raw onions on top like she served it. Palms gave me the pickles and onion and the sandwich was great. Â My GF enjoyed the veggie skillet, also. The coffee was drinkable but not great.
This is a great place to stop if you're on Route 66 and we'll definitely be making the trip here again soon. Atlanta has some interesting retro advertisements and a giant holding a hot dog both of which draw people to town.
Great place! Â Great food! Â One of the off menu breakfast specials when I went was a veggie skillet. Â The fried potatoes on bottom were sooo good and then it was all topped with grilled onion, peppers, mushrooms tomatoes, cheese and two eggs. Â Comes with toast for $4.95. Â We topped off our breakfast by splitting a slice of peach pie. Â
Yeah, I know, no one should be eating dessert after breakfast but based on pie comments in other reviews, we just couldn't resist. Â The crust was superior and flavor was very good but a little scant on peaches compared to how I would make it at home.
I ate around 9:45 and wasn't hungry again until 6:00 for dinner. Â I see this being a short drive, destination place for breakfast in our regular future.
I stopped through here during my Illinois leg of Route 66. Â It was a great little place. Â I loved the palm decor and they had an old South Pacific pinball machine and still used an old rotary phone. Â Just a wonderful atmosphere and reminder of how life used to be. Â My waitress was very nice and the locals added some color to the place. Â I had cheeseburger that was pretty good. Â I probably wouldn't get the chili again, it was a bit bland. Â But I would go back to this little place again. Â But good food, and great atmosphere and people.
Review Source:Found this place by accident, but were overall really happy with it. If you are looking for that Mayberry feeling and want to be taken back to the '30's or 40's, this is the place for you. The staff was very friendly and helpful. We had a great experience and definately enjoyed the entire meal which included their pork tenderloin and Fresh Baked Pie.
Review Source:If you are traveling on Illinois' Route 66 - do yourself a favor and stop at the Palms Grill in Atlanta.
This diner has been lovingly restored to it's 1930's glory days. Â The meals are classic diner faire with generous portions and the award wining pies can't be missed.
My friend and I shared a ponyshoe - toast covered with meat (our choice hamburger) topped with fries and cheese - YUM and the pork tenderloin sandwich (the patty was big enough for 2 sandwiches), needless to say we had leftovers. Â But there was no way I was missing out on trying the pie - full or not, so I got my generous slice to go. Â Tart cherries and flakey crust, it's a good thing I don't live close by or I'd definitely be living on a pie heavy diet.
Amazing little store-front diner in a sleepy town that likely had its hey-day long before easy transportation and mega-malls. Four of us ate there a few weeks ago.
We loved the Walleye (both dinner and sandwich). The hash browns were crispy shredded potatoes, just like they are *supposed* to be. The chili was good, too.
We were not less impressed by the vegetable BLT soup and the onion rings.
Where the restaurant really shines is their pies. Among the four of us (eating there and more later that evening from "to-go" pods), we had Cherry (my favorite), Pumpkin, Sour Cream Raisin (surprising me at how good it was), Pecan (near perfection), and Peach (which, if not for Cherry would be in a tough battle with the Pecan).
We would have tried the Strawberry Rhubarb, but a mean person came in and bought all they had. So, be sure to arrive early for best selection, and you might order your pie at the start of the meal. You can always have it in a pod if you're too full to eat it there.
We found this place via a magazine article on pie places along former US-66. We look forward to trying the others, and coming back to Palms again soon.
The Palms Grill is a treat when traveling on Route 66. It just recently opened back up after being closed for over 30 years. Originally, this was the happening place in Atlanta as it was the Greyhound bus stop and also hosted bingo parties as well. Hard to believe though, since walking through downtown is almost like a ghost town (which is good for picture taking anyway). The renovation is great. It has that old-timey diner feel. They really put a lot of effort to get it back to the original 1930s diner. There are blue plate specials and homemade pies. Can you say yummy! The food was awesome. Good prices and huge portions.
The town of Atlanta is worth a visit. They have really embraced their Route 66 heritage and it shows.
