Laguanitas IPA 20oz to freedom! The Prime Sandy is great and the staff is super chill. Â The joint has a relaxed feel to it, which is refreshing in a town that is getting more and more cowboy-chic. Â When ever I'm up there I try to stop by. Â I love the horseradish sauce on the Prime Sandy, and tasty garlic fries. Â Lots of laid back locals to jaw with while sipping ice cold draft beer, rounds out an impressive Paso Robles cultural experience.
Review Source:Comfortable and relaxed atmosphere. The service was prompt and the food was great. Definitely try the garlic fries with as many sauces as possible, it's great with some and amazing with others. The maple smoked bacon was great on a burger. The calamari was very tasty and portions were great all around. Great value as well.
Review Source:I can't say enough great things about this place and its staff! Ian is definitely the consummate bartender/caretaker of this little gem of a place. It seems to be the local popular watering hole and was definitely the place to be post-Wine Festival. Our first visit was on a sleepy weeknight and we enjoyed people-watching some local drunk people and Ian's finesse in handling them. When we came back after the festival, it was nothing short of chaotic, but we found a spot on the outdoor patio and had a wonderful experience listening/dancing to the band. I'm only sorry, after reading some of the food reviews, that we didn't eat a meal here. Oh well...definitely next time!
Review Source:I'm so tired of hearing how great the food seen is in Paso. Â We have gone to a few places that are trying to hard to be special. Â Just make good food! Â We went to Pappy's for lunch and got a great meal. Â I had the corned beef and my wife had the Blarney Burger. Â Very good service and food which helps when you are wine tasting.
Review Source:First I want to start off by saying I am sorry about the noise my children were making and the disruption. I apologize if I caused any loss of revenue due to the loudness of my two year old little girl.
Now down to business. AWESOME food I had not had a pot pie that good since my grandfather passed away in 2007. The menu is west coast tailored so tacos and California foods. It is Irish do what is available. I loved the food and the place was awesome if me and my wife ever get a weekend to spend alone I will keep this pub on my list of date sites.
Thank you for your understanding and again am sorry about the noise.
The food is always wonderful but tonight the service was really lacking! We came in for dinner at 8:40 and seated ourselves. After our food was dropped off we didn't see our waitress again until 9:15. We had to ask for refills and sugar for tea. We were pretty disappointed. We know Pappy's is mainly a bar and a late night happy hour starts at 9:00 but your customers that come for dinner shouldn't be forgotten.
Review Source:I've been coming to Pappy's since it was the Crooked Kilt. In some ways it's worse (they don't have oysters on the half shell or shepherd's pie) and in some ways it's better (cheaper lunch prices) and in some ways it hasn't changed at all (dancing at night brings out the freaks). Overall, it's a cool place to visit if you're a tourist and nice place for locals to go for a pint. The service is always great. They do a great wedge salad, the Man salad is also good and the calamari is bomb.
Review Source:I had a great time at Pappys. It was a Sunday afternoon and the place was packed but I sat at the bar and the bartender was very friendly and pretty attentive. Â I had some local beer as well as the Calamari and chips. Â The food was solid and the beer was cold. I highly recommend the place.
Review Source:Average! Â A-OK! Â
Was in Paso for a weekend and wanted some basic food. Â And we got it at Pappy McGregor's. Â Â Had the Corned beef sandwich with a salad, wife got the chicken pot pie. Â Â It was good. Â All good. Â I know that they describe it as "goumet pub food" me thinks not... Â Â In fact if I had read that before I went in I would probably of shied away.
The Kilts are a nice touch. Â Probably a little cold when they walked to their cars at the end of the night though. Â What does a Scottsman wear under his kilt? Â His shoes! Â Â
Had a black velvet and it was good too. Â
Fair prices and good service! Â Â
I would think it would be a great place to watch world cup soccer, or have an after work happy hour!
Even though there are a million places in Paso I'm excited to try, we returned here after I saw a random list of the best nachos in SLO County. Pappy's was #1. Their prime rib nachos were said to sit on a bed of housemade chips and topped with lots of goodness. There are two sides to the bar which are two entirely separate rooms. There's also a huge patio outside, and we were in the room which led to the patio. Â
We sat at the bar since most of the smaller (and larger) tables were full. Our receipt says "Joe Bar" was our server but I'm pretty sure her name was Amy. (Easy for me to remember). She started us off with an iced tea ($2.95) and a Bloody Mary ($7.50). Amy even remembered to ask if we wanted salt on the rim. Some places don't ask. Some places do. I prefer the ones that do. We were sharing so went with a mildly spicy one. It was pretty warm when it came out but lucky for us, Amy was back checking on us soon after to see how we were doing. She happily went back for more tomato blend! Much better.
We ordered the nachos ($12,95) and she recommended the prime rib of all the meat choices. I prefer my nachos meat-free but since these had prime rib chili on them we went with that. It was actually waaaay more cooked than we like our meat so next time (oh there WILL be a next time!!!) we will probably do chicken. The nachos came with hot peppers and cheese and the chili. Maybe some other stuff? Husband was dying a bite or two in and swore it was super spicy. I took out as many of the little jalapeno chunks as I could find and put them on my side. They weren't that spicy. Just perfect! He said the chips that had touched them were spicy too (baby!) but that just meant I got extra nachos! We requested more cheese and she brought us a bowl of this amazing cheesy dip. It was great.
I had a mini pitcher of tea so my refills were fast and easy. Every time Amy walked by she refilled my pitcher or ice, even though she didn't have to since I had it right there. That was great though.
Just as we were getting full, a plate of calamari sat at the table next to us. Um, what??! It looked soooo good! We asked the guy that set it down about it and he said it's "what they're known for". It was then we started looking at all the plates around us. Huge burgers with delicious looking fries on the side caught our eye and everything just looked better and better. Tomato soup with a crispy grilled cheese. I don't even like tomato soup and it looked good. Which says a lot since we were so full. We decided to get an order of garlic fries. The battered fries showed up and we had a ranch to dip them in. Amy suggested trying spicy BBQ mixed with the ranch and by the end we were dipping fries in everything, even the cheese sauce we had left from the nachos.
Couldn't have left more happy. Service was wonderful. Food was incredible. Got a nice thank you on the way out from another employee. I want to come back and order everything on the menu. Really looking forward to my next trip down - this place is already on the itinerary.
Was looking for a place to eat on my own last night while visiting Paso. Thought maybe this place would be good for a shepherds pie so decided to check it out. No shepherds pie on the menu, but there were fish and chips. In fact, the best fish and chips I have had in years. Perfectly cooked - and the best part - with awesome fish that did not fall apart while breaking the pieces apart/eating it. Great beer on tap and good service A++++++
Review Source:Great place for lunch, loved the Barney burger &fries.mac & cheese also. Â Night time sucks tho, denied me entrance because I was wearing a football jersey while my team was playing on Tv ! Laaame , and they don't allow backward baseball caps. WTF , IS THIS HIGHSCHOOL ?? Â Kinda funny people watching, half the girls can't dance and they're is always freaky old dudes Pervin on em !
Review Source:The Jalapeño Burger and fries are the best I've ever had. I think it was the cheese they used really set it off for me with the burger and the fries were nice and crisp.
The service was friendly and attentive. This is my default place to eat out if Im not feeling something in particular. Great place to eat and hang out...I recommend it to anyone m/
My wife and I decided to end our day of eine tasting in Paso at Pappy's in hopes of having some good filling pub food. It was crowded inside, so we opted to sit outside where there was available tables.
I decided on the Kobe burger and my wife had the bacin avocado and cheese burger. We ended up waiting about 20-25 minutes from when we ordered the burger to when we actually got our food. (We didn't order appetizers) Our waitress did come and apologize to us about the kitchen being backed up a few minutes before we got our food.
Unfortunately, once we got our burgers, the best thing about them was the buns. Our burger patties were both dry. I saw I ur waitress once after getting our food and let her know...she said she would let the kitchen know, because the Kobe burger shouldn't be dry. Duh! But after waiting so long for our food, we decided to just eat and leave. We hadn't seen our waitress since letting her know the burgers were dry so eventually I got up to find her so we could pay for our food before leaving.
Definitely a disappointing experience!!
Up and down the coast seems to be the norm with us these last 10 years, Paso Robles is a good halfway point and we LOVE the downtown area, Pappy's being smack dab in the middle of it all on the east side of the park.
We've always sat at the bar so I can't comment on the table service but if it's anything like the bar...fantastic! Bartenders remember us by name despite weeks long absences and are at the ready with drinks almost as soon as we sit down.
We've tried almost the entire menu by now and I can't think of any complaints. Well, maybe that the burgers are bigger than we can handle!
Always a great stop for us, a good recommendation here!
Stopped here for a late lunch with my boyfriend while passing through Paso Robles. The pub is really cute. Has a easy to find location. Staff was very friendly. Looked like they have a lot of fun events at the pub. Â Menu also looked great, but once I got my food I didn't care too much for it. I ordered the grilled cheese and tomato soup. Maybe if it was later at night and I was eating the same meal with a beer it would be better? Â Not sure, but my stomach got really upset during the meal and lasted for a few hours. Â My boyfriend however was fine and enjoyed his meal very much of clam chowder and garlic toast. Â Even tho I feel that I might of had an off meal there, I'd give them another go in the future.
Review Source:Overpriced (for North County) drinks that aren't even made correctly half the time. Long wait times on ordering drinks even though they seemingly have 10 bartenders there. Completely asinine dress code (Yeah, wearing a white American Apparel V-neck is totally threatening and gang-related). Can't speak for the food, never tried it. Only thing that saves this place from getting 1 star is that the atmosphere is cool and the outdoor patio/dance floor/whatever is nice. There are better options in Paso for grabbing drinks (although sadly, not many).
Review Source:Cannot reccomend this place highly enough. I wish my neighborhood Pub was so rad.
My wife and I were on our last night in Paso and this pub was one of the only places still open at 10pm on a Tuesday.
The bartender/manager was very friendly and attentive.
On tuesdays your first beer is six bucks but you keep the Pappy's pint glass. Each additional beer is two bucks. I'm sold. They had Shock Top on tap, none of my local bars in LA have that on tap.
Got a burger that was absolutely awesome. Fried jalepenos on it, awesome. Bartender tells me it's free range beef and some fancy locally made bun. It was very reasonably price...maybe six bucks. Outstanding fries too.
Way better than the pub food at my local spot.
We spent several hours there chatting it up.
Wish we would have tried it on our 1st night. Will definitely make this a regular spot any time we're in Paso.
The only place in Paso to go dancing! DJ on Saturday night spinning on the back patio. The bartender was friendly. A good set of beers on tap.
Our group also had dinner here earlier. Food was decent. The burgers were popular, especially with the garlic fries. The mac & cheese was ok. Nachos sounded better than they tasted. Fish and chips, their signature, were a bit greasy. The cioppino was really good and hearty with the garlic bread, except for the fact that I got a big piece of funky textured fish. If I hadn't had that in the mix, it would've been great and I'm not a picky eater. I think it comes with the territory of ordering a seafood stew.
Stiff drinks @ steep prices. Â Don't mind getting what I paid for but considering the general crowd (9:30 pm-pre DJ crowd, Red Bull & Jager hacked up hipsters & some poseur LA tourists) didn't really set the right mood for a supposed "Irish Bar & Grill"
Overall...decent place...kinda, sorta.
A decent "hole in the wall" pub -- nice change from wine and cheese . . .
Nice beer selection -- on tap and in bottles. Â Happy Hour is 11- 6, so large pints were $4 (I think?)
Had fish & chips and a BLTA sandwich -- decent food -- garlic fries were great, but way, way too many of them & too much food. Â FWIW -- a little garlic goes a long way -- we ended up going back to our hotel & brushing our teeth b/c the garlic was a tad overwhelming. Â Overall, left bloated and ended up skipping dinner, which wasn't our intention. Â Not many light options on the menu, so plan ahead & share if you're not too hungry.
Nice divey kind of place -- opens up more at night -- outdoor dining is an option once it's a bit cooler outside because the front patio faces west. Â We don't stay out partying, so cannot comment on the night life component -- just the regular dinner crowd ambience.
This place reminds me of Santa Cruz on a Saturday Night.. Last weekend= Bachelorette Party in Wine Country. After getting some food we needed a place to continue the party.. found this place..
The BeatFreakz were spinning and they were good.. definitely played a good mix of the popular stuff, old school and some techno.
There were tons of strobe lights and other lighting to give someone a seizure...
The back patio is like going to someone's garage party...interesting mix of folks..there are lights strung out.. and strung out people.. in going to the bathroom there were two girls that were snorting something totally in plain view... awesome..
At around 12:30 folks had that glazed over look you can only get from a few things which I will  not mention... until some folks who totally on some kind of upper started "dancing" and acting crazy.. at that point we decided it would be best to bizounce.
Gross gross food, and a roach problem...
This place is Trashy with a capital T. The staff is snotty, the waitresses dress like strippers, and there is a constant crowd of leering drunks and messy barflys at night. Â
What saves it a star is the dance scene on weekends, cause sometimes you want some good trashy fun. All the love in the world for the Djs. Save yourself the barfight and go to DTB if you want to eat
Roadtripping to Paso for a weekend, my friends and I decided to grab lunch. It was my first time ever in downtown Paso. It was such a quaint little area! Two people ordered sandwiches, and two ordered burgers. I got the Jalapeno burger. That thing was GINORMOUS! It came with fries, and the burger was about 8" tall, 6" in diameter. I ate only a third of it and some garlic fries. The fries were delish, but the burger was only good. The spice level was good, but what I didn't go bananas about was the sauce that came with it. It was too creamy for my liking.
Service was good. Â We sat in the back patio of the Crooked Kilt, there was only one other table out there with us. We were afraid they would forget about us, but they didn't. Also, they were nice to us even though we were in a rush (we had places to go!). I suggest to no sit in the back patio. There are flies everywhere! More than anywhere else I've been to in the states!
3.5 stars!
So, I came here with a few friends one a game day. It was the battle of the Bay for football. The place has two wings to it. One wing was super packed with people watching the game and had more bar area. The other wing had more tables and was less crowded that day.
I wasn't that hungry and decided to get something light. Most of the food looked like it would be a heavy meal. I got the prime rib bites which I believe was about $14 or something. The came soaked in sauce. I would say they were pretty decent. The horse radish sauce they provided wasn't as thick as I would like it to be.
But I will say, they deals on pitchers looks great. I recall seeing something like $15 or $10 for pitchers. I can't remember the details though.
If a break from all the wine you're bound to be drinking while visiting Pasol Robles, then Crooked Kilt (or Kilt I think it's called nowadays) is your place.
Came here last weekend because I was in the mood for hot wings and beer. No wine and cheese tonight was the plan! Thanks to good ol' reliable Yelp I was able to find a pub that will serve just that.
The boyfriend and I ordered a plate of the prime rib nachos (**drools**) and the boneless wings (couple of chicken strips cut into even smaller strips). I ordered a black and tan (or something like that) with Guinness and Harp. My BF ordered the flight of Jameson (woo hoo!!).
We met a few cool people, locals and tourist alike. The dancing I must say was HILARIOUS!!! Yea sure, the DJ spun some new tunes as well as my request (E-40 ninjas!!!!), but no one really "got low" or whatever the cool kids call it these days. So if you're not into people "freakin" all over the dance floor, then Kilt is for you!
A group of friends and I were looking for a cold beer and a nice meal after a long, hot day of motorcycling. The Kilt seemed to be just the thing with Guinness, Harp, and Anchor Steam on tap.
Unfortunately, our expectations were dashed by horrible service. We all agreed that it was the worst we'd seen in quite a while. Now, I'm willing to cut a restaurant some slack if I happen to get a bad server, but the rest of the folks appear to be trying. But if the bad service is pervasive, then I have to fault the management, and let people know about it.
Point one: we are greeted and told we can have an outside table in 5-10 minutes, so we go to the bar for a beer (we're thirsty!) The bar is mostly empty, but the counter is covered with dirty dishes, and the lone bartender is filling drink orders for multiple tables. Finally a busboy comes to clear the dishes, and the bartender bitches him out - in front of customers. After ~10 minutes, we finally get our beers. Â I don't have a good feeling already.
Point two: we get seated in the back patio, and wait for a server. Another 15 minutes elapse before she shows.
Point three: We order appetizers and entrees. Our appetizers are buffalo wings and oysters - nothing too complicated. It takes another 20 minutes before the appetizers come out, and by then we're ready for more beer, so order another round.
Point four: The drinks never show until we ask again when the entrees come out. Â We also ask for some ketchup, which never comes. One of our party goes into the bar to fetch some, and sees the two servers who brought our food, chatting. They see him fetching the ketchup he'd requested and say nothing.
Point five: When the drinks finally arrive, they mix up the beers. Fortunately we know enough to tell an Anchor from a Harp. (I would think this would be pretty obvious to anyone who'd worked in a bar more than 10 minutes.)
Point six: Needless to say the check is incredibly slow in arriving. We can't wait to get out of this horrorshow of a restaurant.
To be fair, the food was OK - basic pub food. But even if it was fantastic, it could never overcome the completely inept and careless service.
LOVED this place! Â What an awesome way to end an awesome night. (that is excessive awesome usage - even for me!)
Came in after my sister's wedding - still rockin the bridesmaid gear. Â Loved the Stellas in imperial pints and the cool bartenders. Â Oh, and the dancing...I hadn't gotten my full dancing fix at the wedding, and I still needed to get the wiggles out.
Great clientele too - nice locals, and even ran into a bunch of fellow Chico grads. Â Sweet.
So our first server was pretty cool. If he asked William Wallace, 'Do I get to kill any English?" I'm sure Braveheart wouldn't have batted an eyelash before saying "Aye." Unfortunately, we ended up with a different server, and the experience ended much like Braveheart did: not a happy ending.
Server number two was a 40-something calamity named Sherri. Holy crap she needed to be working somewhere else, e.g. a truck stop. Her spray on tan and exposed 40 year old midriff did nothing to distract me from her lack of interest in our table and "What the hell are you doing in my restaurant?" attitude.
Another server came by at first and took our drink orders and checked our IDs. Then Cruella de Ville came back over and said, "This is MY table! I need to see your IDs myself!" We showed them to her and she took our drink order again, as if the other server didn't mean anything to her.
We asked her to split the check and she looked at us like we asked her to stop going to the tanning booth. "No I can't split the check, honey. You're gonna have to figure it out yourself." So we did the math and write each person's name and their total on the check. She came back and said, "What the hell is this?!" So we explained how the name is next to the total. She returned with the checks with the wrong totals on all of the checks. I know it is rude to tip low, but sometimes people deserve it. She deserved her one dollar tip from all five of us.
Needless to say, the Ortega chicken sandwich was delicious, as were the garlic french fries. Too bad the service was so terrible. It really ruined my lunch and I will probably never eat here again.
Surprisingly nice and charming Irish sports pub. Â
We came here looking for the Bears game as it is apparently the only place in town with NFL Sunday ticket. Â It had both games we needed to see in one bar and the rest on televisions on the other side. Â The Guinness Stout they poured was the freshest I've ever seen - with the cream well over the top of the glass.
Service was friendly and they have plenty of drink specials, expecially for Lakers games. Â Didn't eat here but the food looked very good. Â A nice surprise.
Stopped in for a quick, casual lunch. Had a good local cider, which isn't my usualy drink but it was a good change of pace. Had delicious tomato soup and a grilled cheese, real comfort stuff and yummy!
I have no idea what this place is like on weekend nights, but a weekend lunch is good stuff.
After reading a previous review, I must preface this by saying: I'm nowhere near 21, and not even a little desperate!
If you're tired of wine, and want something unpretentious, try out The Crooked Kilt. They've still got a pretty deep wine list, but they've also got a lot of great local beers. They do somewhat gourmet spins on pub food, in the best possible sense - my boyfriend's burger was far yummier than the average burger, and my mac and cheese knocked my socks off. There seem to be a lot of locals here, and everyone was friendly and happy to engage in conversation.
This is the Perfect place to stop for a pint in Paso. Â We hit it up before going to the Mid State Fair to see Aerosmith. Â You have to try the pub fare, their food is amazing. Â We had the buffalo wings and calamari strips. Â Both were pretty darn tasty.
The service we recieved was lacking though. Â The gal who was helping us seemed pretty clueless when it comes to anythign on the food or beverage menu. Â We were guessing it was her first day. Â
None the less 2 thumbs up for the Crooked Kilt!
