Imagine being in a small New England town on a Saturday night, pretty close to the Connecticut River, and being in a bar full of people signing along with Billy Joel's "The Downeaster Alexa"? Sounds like heaven, don'it? There aren't enough stars for this experience!
Now, what's the Conk like when the above songfest is not going on? A restaurant fulla rustic picnicky charm. Pretty exciting menu, but it was a tad late for me to do a big meal, so I went with the pulled pork sandwich. Chips instead of the jalapeno cornbread cuz they told me I wouldn't be able to pick the peppers out. Why can't anyone make cornbread w/bacon, like my mom usta?
This is one of the top three pulled pork sandwiches I've ever ever had. I kid you not. Fluffy but substantial eggy roll. Crisp pickle slices. Snap! I don't remember what the rest of us had, except the sweetpotato fries, which I ate a bunch of. Appealingly skinny and crunchy. Fine vittles, especially for a place that looks like it could coast on its rep and put all its attention into the bar. (And that bar was packed as hell. I think I stepped on every toe in the house trying to leave.) The leftovers made a terrific breakfast, tasting superfresh despite a night in the fridge.
PS, when my crew burst into "If I Loved You" in squeaky cartoon voices, nobody batted an eye! They musta thought we were auditioning for the theatre next door. Gotta lovit...
I hadn't been to the Pattaconk for dinner in a while... Been there for apps and drinks but not real food. Â I forgot how many options they had on the menu. Â Lots of good burger choices, some good salads, pizza, and several other things. Â They also have 20 something different beers on tap. Â
I went the day before St Patty's day and they had a corn beef & cabbage special which was decent. Â It wasn't the best I've ever had but not the worst either. Â The corn beef was very lean with almost no fat at all, the potatoes and carrots were good, but the cabbage lacked flavor. Â However, I love CB&C so it was still a good choice for me. Â
One of my dinner mates had a burger that looked fantastic and the other had the pulled pork dinner which also looked good. Â
The highlight of all three meals was the jalapeño corn bread muffin that came with the pulled pork... It was very good, moist with just enough of the pepper flavor to give it a little bite.  I'll be back soon.... Next time, probably a burger.
You're in connecticut's most beautiful town so you truly have no reason to complain. I lived in Chester for several years when I was a child and quickly came to appreciate the town's simple and rustic elegance. A summer weekend wasn't complete without a fun and relaxed meal at the Pattaconk Grill. What you'll find here is timeless American classics that will satisfy everyone in your party. As I kid I probably got chicken tenders, a burger, pizza, or a quesadilla... Or maybe a salad...anyway, its all good. Never a bad experience here. And now they have a creamery!? Now that is perfection!
Review Source:I nothing bad to say about the Pattaconk...
The food is great: It arrives hot and in generous portions. I tend to have sandwiches and burgers when I go there, and I haven't yet been disappointed in anything that I've ordered. They are cooked to order and they make reasonable substitutions when asked. I admit that I have a weakness for their clam chowder... it's worth the trip up to Chester just for that.
Overall, just a good pub with good pub food!
We stopped in after a hike at Gillette Castle. Â We sat outside and ordered lunch. Â I had a couple Lost Sailor IPA's, which was one of the many beers they had to choose from. Â My burger was cooked perfectly, with lots of red onion on it. Â My wife had the veggie burger, with whole wheat bread swapped for the bun and the side salad. Â She loved it too. Â Our waitress was able to help out my wife in taking home leftovers (we live over an hour away) by giving her a container of ice to keep the food somewhat cold during transport. Â Service and food both very good. Â I'd go back next time we're near, for sure.
Review Source:I just finished a Saturday lunch at the Pattacunk and as usual I had a good time. Kerry our barkeep was friendly and attentive. I enjoy tap beer and got a couple of samples before setting the Hammerhead IPA (good and bitter). I had a very nice burger (tasty meat cooked medium as requested) with toasted bun and a good amount of lettuce and tomato slices. The fries were acceptable but not as crisp on the outside as I like. My buddy got a Cuban sandwich and finished the whole thing before declaring he wouldn't order that sandwich again; couldn't have been that bad given his empty plate.
Overall I love the Pattaconk and have always enjoyed my time there. I've always sat at the bar (ok I've had to stand when it is crowded) so I can't say much about the seating in the back. And I've only eaten there a couple of times and had quite acceptable bar food. Â I'm usually there for a beer. Enjoy.
Oh, how I wish I lived near a place like this! Cool, cool taproom, friendly waitstaff, Great Beer Selection, both on tap and in bottles. Brought some friends from Michigan here, and they fell in love with the place. The Conk's sandwich selection will not disappoint, and you will find some thing you like on the menu. My friends smoke, so we sat outside. The roof over the seating area is cover in a hard, clear plastic sheeting, so on sunny days it gets a bit steamy in there. Which gives you the perfect excuse to order another cold one. My Cuban sandwich was just as good as the ones from Key West, and my friends burger was perfectly cooked, well topped and very well received. If I didn't live two counties away, I would be a happy regular at the Pattaconk
Review Source:I haven't eaten here yet, just hung out at the bar. This is a really great bar to hang out, meet cool people, listen to the juke box, and get drunk. They had a great selection of beers too. Unpretentious and wonderful. Longtimers to this bar have their own reserved steins hanging and the darkwood and beer signs are the perfect decor. People are friendly and happy to say hello. Â Its "Cheers" for CT.
Review Source:Let's get one thing clear: I like drinking.
One thing i really dislike when i'm trying to tie one on is a bunch of underage kids running around (which happens at a lot of other bars in the CDE) or lots of dumb, brodude shenanigans. Ray does not cotton to shenanigans. This is what i like about the Conk.
The taps are pretty good, as are the prices. Too many bars that meet my shenanigans requirement are divey, rough, smoky rooms that have red-nosed santa claus guys hawking cheap swill. And i do love swill on occasion. But at the conk i can get a place that just feels right but also has some of the standbys (Sam Adams seasonals, Magic Hat whatever) as well as some truly excellent classics like Dogfish's 60 minute. This is what i like: it's a beer bar that isn't a trendy brofest belgian "bier garten," a whole aesthetic that has its place, but this is perfect for the sort of small town Chester is.
It's not without problems, but most of those are personal. If you went to Valley (the local high school) you will undoubtedly see people you know. This can be a plus or a minus, depending on your mood and attitude toward such things. Me, i waffle: i like drinking anonymously sometimes so the small-townness of the place kind of gets to me on occasion. That said, it's not like i've had times ruined by running into old acquaintances and sometimes it's been quite fun.
I should also mention that the booze selection is pretty good. Sometimes that's lacking at watering-hole type places but there's good, tasty hard liquor there.
I'll put it this way to finish up: anytime i'm in town, i usually go once or twice. I don't pound down the door, but there's nothing quite like some crazy salty popcorn and good beer at the Conk on a freezing cold New England night.
This place ( I think ) is mostly locals. But being about 20 minutes away it's not a bad little place to drive to for a night with a few friends.
Happy hour drink specials untill 11 are sweet. 3$ rum and cokes, seabreezes, and 2 dollar beers on tap and bottle...some bottles are 3. great little late night menu with nachos and late night pickings - motz sticks, wings etc. It's pretty much your run of the mill late night menu, nothing special.
I've been there twice now. The first time I had a seafood platter that was delish, and the second a burger with bbq sauce, smoked gouda and bacon...TO DIE FOR. cooked perfectly. Theres a juke box in the bar with all sorts of different music to play, the variety is great. They usually have the sports games on in the bar which is always nice. It's a nice little place to go.
It's
been
here
forever
The Pattaconk has been a part of Chester forever. If not exactly forever than at least a hundred and fifty years. It's built on a ledge so the back part is over looking the Pattaconk river and the front is at street level. If you look closely you will see how unique the building is. It's right in the center of Chester and is surrounded by little antique and craft shops. Chester is a very cool town.
The food is basic, the usually burgers, pastas and some fish. Nothing strange, exotic or exceptionally gourmet. But everything they serve is pretty damn good.
The center of the restaurant  is dominated by a huge bar and there is a dining room in the back looking down on the river and a very neat patio that can be used in the summer. The bar has lots of good beers, both foreign and domestic and even has a popcorn machine.
One of the cool things about the Patta is the proximity to the Goodspeed theatre. The walls have pictures of past shows and I have seen cast members from the show dining here and on occasion even entertain.
The only negative is that it can get obscenely crowded and the bathroom are obscenely small. Â You literally can't even walk by on the sidewalk on nice summer nights. I guess this popularity will ensure that the Pattaconk will be around for at least another hundred years. Â At least if the venerable old building doesn't finally fall into the river.
This is a great neighborhood pub in a very walking-friendly and scenic part of Chester - there are lots of art galleries and other shops around, too. Â It's a simple place with a simple menu, very friendly help, and the meal I had was fresh and delicious. Â For $8 I got the lunch special which included 1/2 a sandwich, a cup of soup, and a salad. Â They have a good selection (very good, actually) of beers on tap, too. Â I'll undoubtedly go back again.
