We thought this place was pretentious! The owner is friendly and very helpful but the atmosphere was just boring. Live music is ok but enough of the Polka nights! Outside seating was really relaxing but there was no music or anything outside. One reviewer said this was the life of the town. Um idk about that! The White Horse is definitely the place especially when there is live music! Have not had the food but several people have told me that it was either bad or just ok. Definitely not worth the price.

A'dored this place! We were hungry and I was tipsy after already having two wine tastings and a very very generous glass of wine from Saddlehorn Winery- thinking I needed to feed my belly we stopped here on our way home for lunch. They are not open for lunch yet but hope to be in the next couple of months. They do have a dinner that looks awesome.

So despite my already tipsy nature we decided to stay and have a beer. Why not, right? The place was really that charming. I even tried to encourage the husband to let us stay the night in Burton so we could eat dinner here (if work hadn't been a pressing issue we definitely would have).

We sat for at least an hour and chatted with the owner about all kinds of things. His wife and family, his business partner, the future of the bar/restaurant, accordions, land prices, Jewelers, marriage, death, languages plus he gave us a tour of the kitchen and the deli that is soon to open and introduced us to their talking bird. I really could have moved in!

Plus the beer was ice cold in chilled mugs and kept me happily buzzing.

    We'll definitely be back!

The Pig & Whistle Pub looks like where the community hangs out on Saturday nights.  It is the life of town.  On the Saturday night of the hottest weekend of 2011, there was a lady singing and playing the piano, people of all ages milling about, people sitting in the outdoors patio chatting, people sitting at the bar, and people eating meals at tables.

The atmosphere was very relaxing.  It was slightly dim indoors and the laidback manner of the bartender contributed to the feeling.  The bartender was friendly and chatted with patrons.  He seems like a good connector.  This pub is small--it was rather cramped indoors and you might bump into people moving around.

They have a pretty simple menu written on a whiteboard.  The prices looked fair.  Call ahead if you are a large group (11+ people) to ensure they will have enough food.  They had a decent alcohol selection--even good considering their location in the middle of nowhere.  I only had a Warsteiner beer and did not get to eat here.

If this pub was located in Austin, I might have given it 4 stars.  For its remote location, it's outstanding.  When I arrived, all the parking spots out front were taken but there were many parking spaces in the back.

This pub is located very close to Hwy 290.

This place is great! I wish the owners would just up-root the whole place and put it close to home in Austin. It's 1hr 40min from Austin, which is the only bad thing I can say about P&W.
It has a very clean, non-smoking, cozy atmosphere. I'm impressed at how well maintained, updated, and decorated this pub is in "the middle of nowhere". My friends and I weren't sure what to expect when we decided to stop and have a drink on our way from Houston to Austin. But we are VERY happy we found this place.
They have live music on Friday and Saturday nights, and the piano "grande dame" was incredible. She took the time in between sets to come around and personally get to know us. By the end of the night she knew all of our names, where we were from, what we did, and was playing all of our song requests! It was truly special to see someone that in love with entertaining people. She was a true Lady, kind, entertaining, and with a beautiful voice.
The owners also showed an abundance of good ol' fashioned courtesy, kindness, and a desire to please. At the end of our dinner she served us these home-made peppermint cookies topped with sugar that were served cold. They were an amazingly delicious cap to the meal.
Later in the night we were craving just a plate of some pickle spears, and not only did she bring pickles, but a half plate of green olives too, just to show how willing they are to please. And while I don't think they normally serve tea on the menu, when we asked for some she gave a quick thoughtful look, said "hold on one minute", and returned from the back with some cups and tea packets. You just can't find service like that in many places!
This place embodies small town hospitality and cheer, and you just can't find a better place to stop for a drink when your on the long road between Austin and Houston. The beer is cold, and the prices are all down right reasonable. Make a special trip, or just be sure to stop along the way because you have to check this place out, you won't regret it!

exceptionally friendly staff.  good prices on the beer.  live piano and singing from a true Texan goddess when I visited.

i give the french dip 3/5 stars; they were experimenting with horseradish levels and it was a bit strong.

my friends and i had a blast and strongly recommend you check out P&W
