Awful! I'll start off by saying that its very rare that I complain, but this restaurant had the worst service and worst food I've ever experienced. This Pirone's has moved to Flying W in Medford, by the way.
My family and I came in for lunch to find no receptionist and no server to ask to be seated. After about 10 minutes of waiting, we were finally seated. An additional 10 minutes passed until our order was taken. Later, we waited 15 more minutes for drinks, about 15 more for appetizers (that's 40 minutes so far), and a total of an HOUR AND 10 MINUTES until our sad little lunch arrived. The restaurant was nearly empty! Only 4 other tables were full the entire time! Why did it take so long?!
Not only was the wait incredibly long, but our food was gross. My chicken was hard and dry, there was an egg shell in my salad (but no eggs), and the pasta was served in a soupy, watery mess with no flavor. Even the iced tea was instant! Awful experience. Never going back.
We ate here in 2005 for dinner when we first moved to Westampton and we were not impressed and have not been back until tonight. Based upon a Yelp review saying that the pizza was good we figured we would give it another shot. Boy were we wrong. I had better pizza a Chuck-e-Cheese at a kids birthday party last week. The kids had friends over so we didn't have time to go to our favs.
If we want to drive, hands down #1 is DeLorenzos in Robbinsville. #2 is Tocanellis in Maple Shade. If you want local Pizza in Westampton / Mount Holly you can't go wrong with Villa or Sal's.
We tried the WAY over priced tomato pie. First off the crust is thick and doughy and the tomatoes are chopped up run of the mill tomatoes from Acme. The menu say basil and I dare you to be able to taste it on the pie. The water from the raw tomatoes makes this pie a wet hot mess. I still can't get that wretched taste out of my mouth. And the cheese pizza is no better.
I have read a review of DeLorenzos that said their pizza will make you a pizza snob. While not much compares to it, I can still appreciate others and find qualities that I like. I can find nothing good about the pizza at Pirone's. They also are very disorganized in this place. The kitchen staff was walking in circles. They told me 20 minutes on the phone. So I showed up on the 20 minute mark on the nose and I didn't get the disaster for another 23 minutes.
As you can tell, I did not like their Pizza. Lesson learned. Maybe I will give them a shot in another 6 years to see if they can get their act together.
In the land of amazing Italian food (the Northeast United States) Pirone's is a lot of hype with very little follow through.
The menu's history section and locals of the Westampton area will tell you all about Mario Pirone's struggle to master the restaurant business throughout his life. His latest restaurant is located in a 'white and blue 'space that looks more like a Greek restaurant than Italian. Some Indian looking curtains are hung high on the walls. Maybe they just haven't gotten around to adding some Italian themed decorations.
Or wait, maybe they're spending that effort on the food!
Oh, nope.
Your meal starts with a focaccia styled bread to be dipped in a pretty bland oil mixture.
Soup comes next and it's absolutely incredible. Just pick one of the four they offer and I guarantee you will not be bummed. The soup was without a doubt the highlight of the meal.
Then come the salads. Yes, you get soup and salad with your meals here. Kind of unnecessary. The salad is so-so. Order blue cheese and you'll receive that freaky kind of chunky cream bleu cheese you might find in, oh, I dunno, Denny's. Nasty.
When the meals come you may be let down. We ordered a mussel dish, Tuscan chicken and beef braciole.
The mussels tasted like they were just taken out of the ocean. Flavors were -extremely- fishy. They were definitely left in the water a little too long as they were also some of the most rubbery mussels I've ever tried. However, the surrounding tomato sauce proved to be a much better 'dip' for the focaccia bread than the oil.
The Tuscan chicken tasted could only be described as if someone had added a little wine to a can of chicken noodle soup, and then poured it all over a chicken breast.
My meal, the braciole, was extremely dry and smothered in a pretty mediocre red sauce.
Judging from the reviews on Yelp and other sites, it seems like most people come here with pizza or pasta dishes on their mind. When you walk into the restaurant the first thing you see is a pizza bar with slices waiting under lamps for someone to order.
I want to believe it was just an off-night, but even on the worst off-nights I've experience at least something gets done right. At least one of the entrees is good. We were 3 for 3 unimpressed. No, soup alone doesn't save the meal. I feel like Mario Pirone wouldn't even approve of the dishes his restaurant is slinging. I would not recommend any of the entrees we tried. Even at $17 each with all the extras, they're just not worth it.
Although this place is at the end of a strip mall it is still by far my favorite pizza place. It's byob so you must remember to stop off and pick up the wine. They do provide wine glasses and will uncork your bottle. My favorite is their deep dish tomato, garlic, and basil pie. I like the white pizza with spinach too so I usually order a half and half. I keep hearing about other places that supposedly have the best pizza but I have yet to find a better one than here.
The place is roomy enough for large groups and yet has intimate spots if you are on a date. They even have a special arcade in the back for kids.
