Dined at PPP after running the Shad Bloom Trail Race. Â As you can imagine, after participating in something like this i was quite hungry at this point (and also a little water logged, but that doesn't play into the review).
Sat down at the bar and was immediately struck by the fact the the stools seemed just a bit too short for the bar - like 1-2 inches off. Â Didn't bother us much, but it was an odd first impression. Â We ordered some beers and perused the menu - classic pub grub, one of those things that, assuming it's done well, is exactly what you want to fill up on. Â Ordered an italian pizza, and before i could blink it was sitting in front of me -seriously, i was amazed at the speed as which they got this food out of the kitchen.
The pizza tasted very home made - not quite a "this was made by an italian grandmother" way, but at least a "this was made from scratch and you can taste it".
Great people watching - had a few locals belly up to the bar while we were there, and the conversations about the recent goings-on in New Shoreham elicited a few chuckles.
We only had a couple of apps here so I can't really comment too much on food (fries were very tasty and spinach/artichoke dip hot and tasty), but everything that came out of the kitchen was a heaping, huge serving and looked awesome. Â We did enjoy a bunch of drinks and I can't say enough about our bartender, Brenna - who also happens to be one of the owners, along with her husband. Â Well-priced beers (sorry for drinking all your PBR, Brenna) and a very nice Sauvignon Blanc I enjoyed. Â Everyone in the place seemed relaxed and happy and we had a great time. Â If you want super fast and friendly service, the kind where you can sit and talk to your bartender and the people around you for hours, great inexpensive drinks and huge portions of awesome comfort food, come here. :)
Review Source:A staple since it's opened. The specials are always excellent - especially anything that's been slow-cooked - and they post them on FB pretty regularly. The salads and apps are great too. It's a solid place to party afterward too - good beers on tap, fairly prompt service and nice to sit outside or dance when there's a DJ. Excellent all around.
Review Source:I really do hate to do this, because I am praying that it was an off-day for them...
We arrived at PPP around a quarter 'til 6, hoping to get our food in time to catch the ferry by 7. Â Perhaps this was our first mistake, expecting to get out within a certain time frame... but at any rate, the guy grilling out front enticed us, as well as the name--I mean hey! Â We're poor people! Â A place for us! Â What can go wrong?
The waitress brought us some waters and took our orders in pretty swift fashion--I got the barbecued salmon, and my husband ordered the famed pulled pork/mac and cheese. Â We settled ourselves in front of a tv and waited.
And waited. Â And waited.
The waitress came back and said that our food would be coming, and asked if we needed any water. Â At that point, it had been 15 minutes, and my glass was half-full, so i turned her down. Â I didn't know my reply meant that she wouldn't come back to refill the water for the duration of oru wait there. Â I even got so desperate, I put my mostly-melted ice cubes in my sandy water bottle and drank out of it instead of the cup. Â Thirty minutes passed. Â I went to the bathroom, hoping that I could figure out how to will my food into existence by the time I came out. Â (It did not work.) Â By that time it was 6:20, and we thought surely the food would come by 6:30. Â Counting down those ten minutes were excruciating. Â Still no food.
By that time, we figured if the food came between 6:30 and 6:40 we'd have time to scarf it down and run to the ferry... but when 6:35 rolled around, I flagged down the waitress and asked her to put our food in to-go containers. Â She said she was sorry, and that our food should be out any minute.
At 6:48, an hour after arriving and still no food, we offered to take whatever was ready. Â A woman who was working at the bar and looked pretty managerial looked annoyed at the kitchen--which, ya know, justified. The waitress grabbed us the food that was ready, the pulled pork--the salmon hadn't even been started on, which I'm trying to figure out how that would have worked--wouldn't the pork have died in the window while they were cooking the fish? Â The waitress offered to make us a salad, and said it would take five minutes--but since her idea of "any minute" was thirteen minutes and counting, I didn't want to stick around and see what five minutes looked like. Â
The food was comped, which was nice, because we didn't ask for that--but when we got back on the ferry, my husband remarked that he was glad we didn't pay for the food. Â The pork was pretty good, hence the two stars (being a Southerner, I am picky about my pork, but I enjoyed it)--but the macaroni and cheese was a big disappointment. Â I peeked in the take out container at the restaurant and didn't see much cheese sauce, but thought maybe my eyes were fooling me. Â When I opened it... I am going to give them the benefit of the doubt and say that the pork fat gobbled up the cheese sauce in transit, but at any rate, we were left eating some plain, al dente pasta.
I would love to give this place another chance. Â But they didn't leave much to redeem themselves... Â Maybe if we were local (or imbibers) our outcome would have been different, but alas.
As a chili snob, I thought I'd give their bowl of chili a try. Â The girlfriend and I split an order of junk fries, which could easily be split by four people (don't recommend getting this for just two unless you're staying on the island, we weren't going to take the leftovers back over to the mainland on the ferry). Â Both were very good. Â The chili was a thick, heavily seasoned (but not sweet, which is good news for me), beef based chili with beans, fairly spicy, and enjoyable. Â The junk fries were a huge tray of potatoes loaded with bacon (strips, not the faux bacon bits or the like), both shredded cheddar and nacho cheese, sour cream and green onions. Â Very tasty, very filling, and a lot of it.
We split a pitcher of Narragansett beer, which was only $6. Â Great bargain for the beer.
Our server was attentive and took good care of us.
Definitely worth a drop in if you're on the island.
Horrible service, mostly from our waitress Kristen M. I'll never eat here again, not that i'm on the island very often. The restaurant was not crowded, but for some reason it took over 30 minutes to get 3 cheeseburgers and a hotdog. The table of people next to us got there after us, ordered, got their food and check before we even got our food. She didn't get our orders right either. Not only were our burgers not cooked medium-well, they were burnt almost to charcoal. My cheeseburger was missing the bacon, and two others were missing their mayo. She forgot to bring me my drink. And she didn't even have the courtesy to fake a "sorry" when we asked for the bacon and mayo for our burgers. I know she isn't the one who cooked our meal, but she is supposed to check to make sure they are right, or at least care a little bit if they are wrong. If you're going to work with customers, have a little bit of personality. Why would I come back to a restaurant where both the service and food sucks?
Review Source:I love me some PPP!
Not much was changed on the inside after they moved in to replace the long-lived Albion, but that "signature" car parked in front is a hoot.
The after-work crowd was a low-key and friendly mix of locals and a few visitors (lack of the latter being part of the beauty of experiencing Block Island during the off-season.) Â Service was adequate, and with a smile but not much more in the way of sociability. Â Not a big deal.
Two gimongous pluses: Â Hard cider on tap (WOW!) Â And the one dish that I tried, would that I'd had the time to stop in over and over, pulled pork on mac & cheese. Â Both were deeelish in and of themselves, and the combo made me want to jump n' shout!
HMMMMMMMM. . .
i've been several times now. Â The first time was october fest and i hands down declared that i was eating the best burger on the island. Â The second time i had the burger and it was not as fantastic as i remembered but it was still good. Â They did have these fantastic to die for wings on the menu which sadly when i returned were told were not available as they sometimes changed the menu. Â WHY WHY WHY??? they were so good. Â In my quest for wings i thought i had found my answer. Â The replacement of buffalo nuggets are a substandard replacement and are not that good. Â Even in a pinch i'd not reorder. Â I've had pulled pork as well . . . .it was truly home cooked and had some BBQ sauce on it. . . I was happy with it. Â Loved the fries. Â Still not over the wing issue though.
UPDATE:  11/15/11 ....macaroni and cheese listed as appetizer enough for  a meal for one person and delicious.  try it you will not be disappointed
Got a great table out front and there happened to be live music next door - and a very rollicking bar scene. Â Got drinks immediately and the waitress kindly brought the kids food (she asked us first) with our apps. Â Salad was fresh and tasted like salad (unlike my salad at Finns, which tasted like fridge...or something)...I digress...for entree got the smoked pork shoulder with Mac and cheese?? Â Pork was awesome, loved the sweet BBQ sauce. Â Mac and cheese was underneath it. Â Not sure I understood the concept, but it was good. Â Snagged a few of my kid's fries and yes, they were awesome. Â One kid had a pub burger and loved it, the other the BLT - very happy. Â Reasonable prices, good service, good food. Â Nice place!!
Review Source:We came here for lunch on the recommendation of a local stranger, it's definitely better than the tourist traps closer to the ferry. They've got a great shaded front porch that pup could hang out with us on, another huge plus. They seem to have events at night, and it seems like a fun place to go out drinking. The decor is mildly hipster-fied texas BBQ, complete with a kitchy longhorn-ed car on the front lawn. The food is decent, though I'd say still isn't dirt cheap despite their proletariat rhetoric. The service was ok.
I would've liked it more also if it weren't for the blonde Snooki lookalike from Long Island squawking TMI drinking stories with her drunk coeds, but I guess that's not really their fault.
A week on the Block has to be one of my favorite ways to relax and now there's this great new place to eat and drink - The Poor People's Pub. I went here three times during my week long vacation, and I can't wait to go back on a Tuesday for the pig roast that they do every week during the season.
I had the pulled pork sandwich, which is cooked on the premises in their big smoker which is right out in front and fills the air with the delicious smell of slow cooked bbq. If you've read some of my other reviews, you'll know that I love pulled pork, and I'll tell you, this is by far the best I've had. I thought there was good pulled pork at another place near me, but they lacked consistency.
Well, three pulled pork sandwich in six days, along with some seriously damn good grilled chicken wings and a variety of other good food has me convinced - The Poor People's Pub is fantastic. Each time, the food was as good as the previous. and the cheerful and excellent waitstaff made the whole experience great. We went with a good sized crowd, including 4 kids ranging in ages from 5-17 and everyone was very satisfied with their food.
Oh, I almost forgot! With the sandwiches you get their house-made potato chips which are cooked to order and arrive crispy and warm. Addictive!
The pub is very thoughtfully designed, and is conspicuously clean. Good music, live bands, cold beer and awesome pulled pork.
I can't wait to go back.
