We dined here for my husband's birthday last night. Dinner service was suprisingly elegant. My four courses included mussels, Caesar salad, steak, and mashed potatoes. The mussels were the highlight of the meal, served in an interesting creamy tomato base. The salad was a flop but the steak was terrific and made up for the miss.
Loved the live music. Perfect place for a romantic evening!!!
The food is OK, but the menu changes too rapidly. Â Owner puts out advertisements she will not honor (bait and switch) and is generally rude to the customers. Â I was there a few weeks ago for a Birthday dinner and the bill was about $200.00 (with my family). Â
After another reviewer noted Jan did not honor her coupons or happy hour she actually called that person at home, stating that it's not like they were "good" customers and didn't spend a lot of money. Â
If she would just honor her coupons and be nice to her guests she may have a better chance.
Bye bye Jan.
Very bad service by our waitress. she did not come to our table unless we asked for something. My friends were happy with their food but will not go back because of the terrible service. The manager blew us off when we talked to her about our concerns with the waitress. She told us how how great the waitress is. Well, she was NOT great to us. We go out to a nice place to eat good food and receive great service. We did not receive great service. Also, my ahi tuna Cesar was smothered in too much dressing and the ahi over cooked.
Review Source:Wow, what a great place! We went there for our very special anniversary dinner, and were fed and treated like royalty. Christina was our server, and took amazing care of us - what a sweetie, and so on-the-spot with every little thing. Food was delicious; prime rib cooked to perfection, baby-greens salad fresh and crisp with wonderful dressing, potatoes to die for. And their Ace of Spades specialty coctail is one of the best I've had - ever, and I know my cocktails. All in all, we enjoyed every minute in this beautiful, relaxing and high-class restaurant, and can't wait to visit again soon! Bon appetit! :D
Review Source:This place is absolutely awful, by far the worst in Ventura to eat. Went for dinner and waited over 30 min to get a seat. Our server was terrible and didn't check on us until after we had finished our meal. The steak was dry and over cooked, I have had better at Sizzler. Don't even get me started on the price, It's definitely not worth it. I can cook a better steak at my home and not deal with the stuck up service that this place has to offer. I would not recommend Prime to anyone, unless you enjoy getting ill after eating dinner.
Review Source:Definitely impressed! I gotta hand it to Prime Steakhouse... BEST steakhouse in Ventura & great prices! My steak was cooked at a perfect medium rare & their asparagus are to die for! Don't forget about dessert!!! Their bread pudding is excellent & service is great! Definitely going back!
Review Source:Went to Prime for the first time tonight..... Had the 4 coarse Prime Rib dinner,It came with Shrimp Scampi (3 nice size pieces) , also a Ceasar Salad & I  Upgrated my Prime Rib to the King cut "HUGE"! & Garlic mash potatoes, all very delicious....My Mother got  the same thing minus  the king cut P.R. I believe hers was a 10 -12 oz cut that was still a nice size piece of meat..... Oh & her first couse she had the tuna Tartare which I  would totally get next time, It was served on a tortilla shell & was little spicy sort of like mini tostada"very delicious" Neither one of us were able to finish the main course....Nice Atmosphere The Staff was very  frendly & attentive Live Music.... My mom & I are both born & raised here in Ventura, she no longer lives here so she was unaware of this restaurant.... She has been to alot of other nice steakhouses, Rue Chris, Morton's, Mastro's Etc.... & she ranked Prime right up there with them.....
Review Source:Oh my goodness!! I love this place!!
They have a 4 course meal for only $35 per person ($25 if you have a coupon!)
The prime rib is so tender and juicy and they have 3 different sauces to choose from. Their spring green salad with poached pears, green apple, candied walnuts Gorgonzola, and red onion (I opt for no onion) with a sweet yet tangy honey balsamic dressing is TO DIE FOR!! The SIX cheese Mac n cheese is phenomenal.
It also includes an appetizer as well, we love the bacon wrapped dates and the stuffed mushrooms!!
To finish off, you HAVE to order their bread pudding! It has a pecan bourbon sauce that is just the superb finish to the entirely delectable meal.
I went here for my birthday, and I was really excited because I've been wanting to try this place for some time. Our waiter was super nice, knowledgeable and very helpful. The menu was set up very well also. I loved the course menu, and it seemed to be a good price too. I didn't think the food was awesome, but it was definitely a treat. I will go back.
Review Source:Atmosphere- vintage and unique
Service- excellent, never ran out of water or coffee, plates were taken after they were empty.
Food- delicious (must try their bacon scallop, risotto shrimp, and prime rib)
Price- $25 for a four course meal for checking in on yelp
Entertainment- average but was a surprise because we weren't expecting it
If we are in the area, we would make it a priority to dine here again!
Keep in mind their menu did change a little from their website, depending on what you order from their best of prime menu the cost varies from $35-$65 (surf and turf).
All in all, it was a great deal and the food was amazing!
Went here for an anniversary.  First off our server Bill was extremely nice, knowledgable, and helpful.  We utilized the check in deal for the "Best of Prime".  Started off with a couple of martinis(pear-tini and a belvedere with blue cheese olives) that hit the spot.  Ordered the arrincini which was super flavorful for just a risotto ball but the sauce was outta hand and the bacon wrapped scallops were buttery with a perfect sear.  The wedge salad with the homemade blue cheese and bacon was great and my wife's caesar was good as well but a little heavy on the anchovie in the dressing.  We both ordered prime rib but they were nice enough to give us a sauce sampler so that we didn't have to stick to one sauce and could try what they had to offer.  To be honest the quality of steak and cooking was good enough to have the steaks stand alone with just a little au jus.  We did try all the sauces and the only one i was disappointed in was the brandy peppercorn sauce.  The twice baked potato was excellent and rich enough to be a meal in itself but we split that.  We also ordered the smokey mac n cheese which I don't think I would order again. Glad I tried it but way to rich with blue cheese (as you can see by this review I am a fan of their blue cheese) and I think smoked gouda which was just too much.  I wish I had gotten a veggie to lighten it up a little.  Extensive wine list and liquor selection as well with a very knowledgable staff to decide what you would like to try.  Local pinot noir went great with the prime rib  but next time I'll go with a cab. Â
Excellent staff, quality ingredients, extensive selection and an absolute deal for the meal you get. Â Enjoyed a classier evening without the pretentiousness that some places have. We'll be back!
Another great meal at Prime!  This time I had the ribeye.  Cooked to perfection.  The salad was not quite what I'm used to,  I expected lettuce but apparently there is no lettuce on a  caprese.  Just tomato, basil, cheese and pesto.  I didn't think I would like it but was pleasantly supprised.
Review Source:The Best of Prime is such a great deal. Â It's normally $35 for a four course meal but if you check in with your yelp app you can get it for $25. Â The restaurant is fairly small and very popular so I would suggest making a dinner reservation.
For my first course, I had the tuna tartare and the pairing with the thai chili sauce was perfect. Â For my second course, I had the caprese salad which was so fresh! Â For my third course, I chose the rib eye steak and it was juicy, flavorful and cooked to a nice medium just like I asked. Â For you fourth course (comes as side), I chose the garlic mashed potatoes and they were buttery and full of garlic flavor. Â So good!
With the romantic ambiance and great food, Prime is a great date spot!
Went here on a Sunday night in December for a friends dinner. It was fantastic. The service was great. The drinks were very good. The food was absolutely delicious. We all shared and all of it was amazing. It can be a little pricey but what do expect when you are fine dining?? Overall, a great place to wine and done.
Review Source:My wife & I just moved to Ventura a month ago & Have been on our foodie quest since day 1. Â We have been to quite a few Mexican restaurants (our fav) but wanted to try a fine dining steakhouse for my 29th (ok, 47th) birthday. Prime Steakhouse was rated #1 on Yelp & so far the reviewers on Yelp have not let us down. My birthday was on a Thursday night so when we arrived at 5:30 we were sat immediately. Atmosphere was casual elegance. A couple guys at the bar with baseball caps but the ambiance was pleasant. Our server Ryan was knowledgable, pleasant & attentive. The drinks were pricey but amazing (Mai tai for me, apple tini for my wife). Instead of ordering everything a la cart we ordered from a pre selected 4 course menu. (5 selections or so per course). Â My 1st course wa bacon wrapped scallops & my wife had a puffed pastry with spinach & mozzarella. Both were amazing. 2nd course I had baby green salad with pear, apple & candied walnuts and my wife had cap reuse salad. My dish was delicious & hers was AMAZING! It was the rock star of our meal!!! 3rd & 4th course arrived together. I had the prime rib with twice baked potato & my wife had filet mignon with Brussel sprouts. The meat was the reason we came & the reason for my 4 star rating instead of 5. Neither tasted like prime cut. Both were a bit chewy plus the seasoning was subtle at best. Twice baked potato was awesome though. Â Very good dinner except for the disappointment in our steaks.
Review Source:I just had my second Prime experience over the weekend. I thoroughly enjoyed my first visit but the second left me a little disappointed. The food (Best of Prime) was terrific and truly a great value. Their CEO Martini was wonderful (very strong) and I would definitely order it again. The live entertainment was enjoyable. The only fault I have was I made a reservation and was shifted off to the corner with my fiancee to wait 30 minutes for a table. Adhering to reservation times is a big deal to me and when a restaurant fails me with a reservation I'm less likely to recommend them.
Review Source:Such a great place, perfect atmosphere, GREAT drinks!  Second visit to this special restaurant.  Must say, I didn't think it could get better but somehow it did.  Started off with a Pear Martini (date's choice, it's winner), Arrancini (lightly battered risotto stuffed with serrano chile and shrimp, topped with fresh tomato and spicy scampi cream), Steak House Wedge (iceberg lettuce, hickory bacon, tomato, red onion and bleu cheese dressing), now time for a Basil Cucumber Martini to go with my Prime Rib  (served with blue cheese marsala), and sauteed Fig Brussel Sprouts, all was totally unbelievably delicious.  Date went with the Pear Martini, Arrancini, Caesar Salad (romaine, house made croutons and parmesan reggiano), tasty Pomegranate Martini to go with her unbelievably delicious Blackened Salmon (freska mango, spicy cream and a hint of honey, and Creamed Spinach.
Really a great menu and tremendously talented chef!
Yum! Had the four course dinner; well worth the cost, especially with a local coupon! Delicious wedge! Good prime rib and garlic mash; nice environment.
The most outstanding aspect was our waitress Jennifer! Very attentive, informative, not overbearing, and able to carry a to the brim-full-martini without a lost drop!! Â She knew her menu answered all questions easily and well! A gem! Â I work in a service industry, and good service makes the meal.
We'll be back!
Unfortunately, my dad has cancer so there are specific accommodations that we need when dining at restaurants ie away from the door, no where near children, no ice in water. Â We always explain this to managers in advance so that they are prepared to give the best service they can. Â After receiving news that we were unable to attend a Christmas eve party in Beverly Hills due to family and friends being sick, my father made reservations at this place. Â My father chose this place knowing based on previous experiences with service and food. Â I will agree with him, dining here myself. Â Knowing that it was Christmas eve, restaurants were going to be busy-this is why we made the reservation...
My father made the reservation at 7 pm and whoever took his reservation asked for him to come in at 715 and said "that way we can have your table ready".  So we arrived on time, the restaurant was  filled up and the host-woman wanted to sit us near the door.  He explained why he couldn't sit at the door, so the host said she needed to find another table.  My dad went to sit in what seemed to be the cocktail area, but the host asked that he would get up because they needed to sit the table.  There was no where to sit for him and she didn't even offer to look for him.  So being in the business, I began to speak restaurant jargon and asked for the turn-around with the earliest table.  She said 5-10 minutes.  She then explained that she needed the table because she wanted to seat the Guest behind us at the bar.  I understood, being a manager myself for several restaurants in San Francisco, and moved my father to an open seat at the bar while I stood waiting for the most available seat next to him.  As we were waiting, the bartender asked for a drink order being a water with no ice for my father and a hotty toddy for myself.  After 5 min the host returned explaining that where she wanted to seat us wouldn't be available, because the previous Guest now wanted to order dessert.  My father then became upset telling her that she should comp us a meal.  The host said that she would not.  My father then asked for the manager and the host replied that she was the manager and said that she would not comp us a meal.  She also said that it was Christmas eve, they were busy and that she would not do this...then walked away.  Do what??? WOW! never in my 10 years of running an operation have I ever experienced this nor said this to a Guest-especially a regular.
Now where I become frustrated. Â It is the holiday-BARTENDERS should know there holiday cocktails!!!! Â After waiting 10 minutes for my hotty toddy and watching the "bartender" make other bar guest drinks another employee ask what I ordered. Â I told him that the bartender already took my order. Â Then this employee not sure if he was a server/bartender maybe a manager said that he didn't know what was in a hotty toddy. Â I told him it was the most simple ingredients: hot tea/water, whiskey/bourbon of choice and splash of lemon juice/honey. Â He told my they didn't have hot water. Â At this point steam came out of my ears, turned to my father and said "I can't do this anymore" Â Our alternative was Alohas, and I was impressed. Â They took us immediately-service and food was impeccable, accommodated my father's needs-away from door/no ice in water and was able to make me a hotty toddy without questions asked.
I will NEVER return to this establishment after the way this manager treated my father. Â Remember your regulars when your bottom line is hurting in the slower months!!! Â This review is more directed towards the woman host/manager. Â As overwhelmed as you are never tell your Guest what you told my father then walk away.
My wife and I have a new favorite! We went to Prime for my birthday. Â Reservations are generally required as it is not a large restaurant, but we were able to sneak in by being there right when they opened. Â The ambiance is romantic and refined but not snooty. Â A Yelp check in will get you special offers and for us it was a discount on the Best of Prime 4 course menu which we both had. Â The menu and value is amazing. Â
We had a bottle of the Rombauer Zinfandel with our meal which paired well with all the food and got better as the meal went on. Â For our first course we had the prime rib chile relleno and the risotto ball. Â The chile was delightfully spicy and the risotto ball was subtle and delicious. Â My wife had the wedge salad and I had the caesar for our second course. Â We were both impressed with the homemade quality of the salad dressings. Â We both had prime rib as our main course. Â I felt my prime rib was cooked beyond my request, but the flavor was excellent. The restaurant was packed and our server didn't make it back to check if we were satisfied with our meat, and I didn't feel like making a big deal about it but next time I will ask for rare. The sides were amazing, the twice baked potato and mac and cheese are something to write home about. Â
For desert I had the rockslide brownie and my wife had the bread pudding. Â Both were good but not as good as the meal had been to that point. Â Overall - the meal was excellent and I enjoyed my birthday dinner. Â I would venture to say our meal was even better than what we had at Maestros in T.O. for my wifes birthday a week or so before our visit and the meal was only about half the price. Â We will be back for New Years Eve and are really looking forward to it.
Business trip brought me to the area. Â Yelpers are right on. Got the $25 four course meal with yelp discount. I was alone so I sat at the bar to have my meal. Bartender (forgot his name but he went to UC Santa Cruz) was very attentive and went over the menu in detail and gave his recommendations. Â Pretty awesome meal for $25. Had the prime rib medium rare and came out at the right temperature, prior to ordering I asked to make sure they still had this temp cut as it was late (9pm) and he checked and confirmed. It was a little salty on the outside as I suspect they rubbed additional salt prior to serving, I was willing to forgive this error as it was simple to flake off the excess salt and went on to enjoy my meal. Â
Hostess was very nice and made sure I was being taken care off and we chatted for a few as I had not been to Ventura before. Â
We come back next time around, just hope they can keep this deal at $35, and keep up the $10 yelper discount. Â But even without the discount I would come back with no hesitation.
Prime! You have a fan from Northern Cal!
Went for a seven o'clock dinner last night. Â First off they did not have my reservation and tried to convince me that it was in another book they kept in the back and that seating was not a problem. Â After a half hour wait, sitting next to the bar in a line of chairs pushed up against the wall, we got a table - a table at the bar, one of those high bar tables. Â When I told the Hostess that we didn't want to eat at the bar she tried to convince us the the table we had was one of the "most coveted" and that we were luck (BS). Â Then our waiter came - guess who - The Bar Tender would was so busy he could in no way of taken proper care of us.
We walked out never trying the food which, by the way, looked pretty good. Â We won't be back. Â Good luck Prime.
2 words - Happy Hour! I'm digging the tapas. I like trying a variety of food, and the tapas thing is good for that. Let me break it down:
- Bacon Covered Dates (I believe it is soaked in some crack like substance and further enhanced by a maply, sugary elixir, stuffed with cheese). Out of this world
- Prime rib tacos
- Mac and cheese
- chili rellenos
- shrimp wontons
All divine creations and went real well with a glass (or 2) of Opolo. Oh and did I mentioned, they have a jazz band that plays in the evenings? The only thing that would make it better is if this place was closer to home.
Just got back from Prime, and it was wonderful! The prime rib was grilled, adding just the right amount of crispy char to my medium pink steak. Wedge salad was crisp, and the blue cheese was perfect. My husband's rib eye topped with mushrooms and onions was as flavorful a steak as we have had in a long time. I love that the mushrooms and onions were just lightly sautéed, still crisp.
Service was great. Ryan was very attentive and did an excellent job in pacing the meal. We love having some time in between courses.
Side dishes were a little hit and miss. The mac and cheese had an interesting smoky flavor, but just a few bites was enough. And the scalloped potatoes were plain. I love Flemings potatoes with cheese and jalapeño, and these did not compare. The ambience is nice enough, although I would not want to be in the front room. When you walk in from the outside it feels like you step right into the dining room, with no lobby at all.
Finally, as noted by other reviewers, don't let the neighborhood fool you. Although we joked about what we could pawn in the pawn shop across the street to pay for the pricey (worth it!) meal.
If you write a review that isn't perfectly friendly expect a message from the owner like I did-
"I read your review on line and I wish you loved Prime more.
Just wanted you to know that our goal at Restaurant week is to showcase what we do well. Â Our Best of Prime dinner
runs $35-$45. We do run ads that offer $10 off.
At Restaurant week it is only $20 and really a deal.
More important is the comment you made about our music. Â Not sure what happened there, but we have three
bands that play at Prime. Â They have all been here for a year or more. I value all of them like I would my employees or customers. Â They are like family to me. Â I would never not pay them or try to do anything dishonest. Â If anythingI give them extra. Â I am very very grateful for the hard work they do...
I don't know if you would be willing to give Prime another chance and a new review? Â Let me know if there would be something I can do to make it better for you!!
Thank you so much!!
Jan
Prime Steakhouse

My fiancé and I stopped in to check out happy hour last night and had a wonderful meal. Â
He had the house salad and the prime rib sandwich with a side of veggies. Â I had a wedge salad with the tuna tar tar. Â I can honestly say that my wedge was the BEST I have ever had. Â (It seems like a wedge salad would be about the same in any restaurant, right? Wrong.) If you like blue cheese as much as I do this is a "must try." Â You will not be disappointed. Â When the tuna arrived I knew I was in heaven: wasabi cream and red chili drizzle. Â I love heat and this dish brought it...
We both loved Prime: dark, romantic, beautiful granite bar with black leather bar stools, live music. Â The food, ambiance, and service at were all 5 stars. Â Highly recommend.
Old time fancy restaurant ambiance. Small initmate place. Â A bit dark inside...but very nice!
We chose the "4 course best of Prime" special
  What we got:
You get fresh breads with butter, and  a garlic spread to put on it.  The bread was warm, fresh, and tasty. The homemade pretzel bread that was incredible!  If you like garlic, you will love the garlic spread!! Â
1st course:
Tuna tar tar and th prime rib stuffed chili relleno.  Both were great. The tuna was like good sushi, and the prime rib stuffed relleno was delicious and satified  our craving for prime rib!
2nd course:
The wedge salad, and baby greens salad. Both were good, but my wife, who ordered the Wedge, said she would get the babygreens. Â The baby greens very good. A sweet salad with fruit and nuts.
3rd course:
Lamb chops, and stuffed salmon. Â The lamb was done to perfection(my perfection is med rare to med). The sauce was great. Some of the best lamb i've ever had! My wife had the salmon. She said it was good!
4th course:
Scalloped potatos, and creamed spinach. Â If you love garlic, you will love these sides! Â Both were fantastically good. Â Cheesy garlicy potatos baked to perfection, or Creamy garlicky spinach... you can't go wrong!
My wife and I enjoyed our first visit here at a late evening hour the day before Valentine's. We weren't the only couple avoiding the rush, so the place ended up being fairly lively. The hostess found the quietest table for us away from the bar crowd.
We were immediately attended by one of the best wait staff we've ever had. Helpful w/o being intrusive. Cheerful. Incredibly quick for the hour and the number of diners. Our hors d'oeurves and drinks came within a couple minutes. Salads and entrees were nicely timed, too.
We chose the introductory fixed price menu of four courses and enjoyed every morsel. The beef was cooked exactly as we wanted and tasted a grade above the ordinary steakhouse--fresher and fuller taste.
No question, we'll be returning at least by same time next year.
Yelped for a good place to eat dinner and stumbled upon Prime, nice surprise. Â They had some live music which was really nice because you had that ambience and it wasn't so loud that you couldn't have a conversation. Â
We both got the four course special which was $35/person, but because we checked in on yelp it was discounted to $25. Â
First Course: bacon wrapped figs & bacon wrapped scallops, both delicious. Â
Second Course: Wedge Salad- hubby liked his wedge; Spring Mix Salad - dressing & caramelized pears were way too sweet for my liking, but loved the apple slices and walnuts
Third Course: NY steak special, smokey mac and cheese and grilled asparagus. The steaks were tender and the mac and cheese is AMAZING, get it! Â
Fourth Course: brownies w/vanilla ice cream for dessert, can't really go wrong!
Service was great too, his name was Ross & he was very attentive even thought it was busy. Â Overall we had a wonderful experience & will definitely be back when we are in the area.
My boyfriend and I took a spontaneous mini vacay to go wine tasting near Santa Barbara but stopped to spend the night in Ventura. We entered and the atmosphere was definitely romantic - dim lights, live entertainment singing nothing but soulful/R&B oldies, and 2 HDTVs playing football games at the bar. =)
I checked in on Yelp and received a discount on their pre-fix 4-course meal. Here's the run down
First Course -
Tuna Tartare (LOVED it!!!)
Crab-stuffed mushrooms (only comes with 3 mushrooms but sufficed)
Second Course -
Baby Greens (if you like sweet flavors of fruit and savor of nuts in your salad then you'll enjoy this salad)
Wedge Salad (boyfriend liked the bacon and the blue cheese dressing)
Third Course
Filet Mignon (not the best I've ever had but tasted exquisite with the scalloped potatoes)
Rib-eye steak (boyfriend liked it as it was juicy and tender and not fatty)
Fourth Course
Twice Baked Potato - a big portion with a lot of cheese!
(I opted for the scalloped potatoes and asparagus that came with the filet mignon - definitely a must!)
Dessert
Bread Pudding - can't eat it alone because it's a huge portion!
All this plus 3 glasses of wine and coffee came out to ~ $125 = worth it for all the fine dining we had for the night including the ambiance and friendly service (Ross was great)!
Will definitely go back if we had the chance to be around the area again.
Mixed feelings...
We enjoyed Prime's dark, intimate environment, the live music played at a volume perfect for dinner & conversation, and a good bottle of Santa Barbara pinot noir ($45).
What we didn't enjoy were our meals. The New Zealand lamb chops ($45) and prime rib ($25) were pretty much discarded without comment by us. I'm sorry to put it this way, but the other courses were just not very good either.
I'd like to return for Happy Hour some evening. The bar area looked like a great place to have drinks & appetizers and enjoy the atmosphere, but It's unlikely that I'll make dinner reservations again.
