Surprisingly good. Â Big food. Â We had a group that stopped on the way and from Mammoth to eat here and was not disappointed.
Not the nicest looking place and the bathrooms that are outside need some work, but the food here is VERY good. Â Order at the window and have a seat - they'll deliver to your table. Â
Pastrami  - thickest and meatist I've had in a long time.  Rivals Johhnie's in LA. Â
Asada Quesadilla - on a 14" tortilla - huge and full -
Burritos - big big big. Â Enough for two or even three.
Asada salad, Taller than it is wide (8x10) - another HUGE.
Overall, IMHO the best place in Mojave - grab a shake - deepish!
Went here for an 8 PM dinner with some coworkers a couple of years ago. Â The whole place was lit up, sign lit out front, and the doors unlocked. Â Walked in, waited at the order window, and the lady sweeping the kitchen floor stared at me and said that they were closed already. Â I wondered "WTF???" and thought that maybe they should've turned the sign and lights off and locked the door if they were closed. Â That was the first and last time that I went to Primo Burgers in the slowly dying town of Mojave!
Review Source:A great place to stop when driving through Mojave.
Not a lot of options to choose from and this place was worth it.
For being a diner, I was impressed by the cleanliness.
We ordered a club sandwich to share and a strawberry banana milkshake. Sandwich was very good, all ingredients were fresh and in the right proportions. The shake was also great.
Service here was very friendly. Hard to find this kind of friendly hometown diner atmosphere in a corporate-chain fastfood world. Even though you order at a counter, the food is brought out to your table. They also kindly hollered across the restraunt to ask if we wanted whipped cream on the shake (we did). :)
You can pick up a local Mojave/Tehachapi newspaper here, an interesting look into local life. We were also lucky enough to catch a conversation between locals about somebody who had put a rattlesnake in someone else's mailbox. Good times!
I stopped at this place on the way back from Inyokern.
This place has really good shakes and a good selection of them.
I also order the bacon cheeseburger with avocado and onion rings.
The burger was really tasty, but the onion rings tasted like fish and the color of them was orange, so I guess they accidentally got fried in the fish oil.
The decor is cute and old school. The waitresses were friendly and chatty. The menu is very full. I had the carne asada plate. Receiving the order is a bit confusing as someone will just sort of shout a number as they walk around the dining area, but our food did come very quickly. The entree was large and plenty enough for my husband and I to split. This is a cute place and reasonably priced compared to nearby fastfood options.
Review Source:The place is a bit old. The food is ok. We had a terrific gyro and Greek salad.
The gyro is not very authentic. But is huge and tasted good. Greek salad is also big in size, the bread on the side is toasted and very good.
After a long drive, this is really a nice place to take a break and have lunch
This place wins ghetto bathroom of Mojave award for sure..... that's what made the biggest impression on me. Â My wife actually used the mens room by accident and her words weren't quite as diplomatic....
anyways, on to what's far more important - the burgers.
I got the BBQ Bacon and the wife got the bacon burger.
I was very pleased to see some big fat onion rings and lots of bbq sauce on my burger. Â The bacon sticking out the sides made it official. Â All in all the burger was good but I think what made it work were all the condiments. Â Had it just been a cheeseburger it wouldn't have been nearly as good. Â the patties are thin and not the most moist hamburger I have ever had - so piling on lots of goodies makes a lot of sense here.
The wife has similar thoughts about her burger which was very similar.
We also had a choco-malt which was good but in the same way as the burger just didn't stand out in any way.
Not bad all in all, I will be back for sure.  I love supporting local business as opposed to the alternative but finding a way to stand out might not be a bad idea.
Primo Burgers is not so primo. While their service was friendly, everything else was just mediocre. I had their Colossal Burger and fries - it was good but no more special than the vast number of burger joints around.
Next time? Does Mojave have other burger places? If not,I will probably be back.
Believe it or not, my wife & I love "Barbie's Primo Burger" enough that it has become a major reason to head north on I-14 thru Mojave, even when we AREN'T driving farther north to Mammoth Lakes, Red Rock Canyon, etc..
Having been born in San Francisco, to a near-native mother, my wife is a stickler for foods that properly represent `The City' - and while she cringed a bit at the name of Primo's "`Frisco Burger" (natives despise that crass, fake-familiar nickname), their Parmigian-Cheese-grilled sourdough burger is worth the trip, alone. The sandwiches are all huge - along with the servings of sides such as crackling-crisp onion rings. Â
And their Buffalo Chicken Wings are so spicy, their vapors alone could serve as tear-gas.
In fact, we're heading up there this weekend - Wind Advisory permitting...
I usually eat her when I'm on the way to mammoth. This place has decent tasting food but the reason I didn't give this place additional stars is because of the staff. They have had an unpleasant attitude most of the times I have ate here. Overall i would recommend this place if your in mojave and starving but other than that i would not recommend eating here.
Review Source:I rate them 4 stars becuase of there consestancy at any hour. Menu can be challenging to decide what to order, shear fact there is soo much to choose from. I can assure that you wont be disapointed. I work on the wind turbines in the area, and this morning for example I ordered the Carne Asada burrito. It was packed full of asada, refried beans, spanish rice, salsa and a melted slice of amercian on top. It's rediculously large. The lovely women who work the counter are not rude (as some say), but sassy and always call you honey, babe, or suger! You smile at them and they smile back. I find them charming as hell! Seasoned fries are a must try with the house ranch! OMG or the onion rings. An order of rings can serve 3 people easily. It's a small kitchen, so be patient. You won't be disapointed.
Review Source:Love this place. Â first went here on accident as coming back from mammoth on a skiing trip our van had some issues so we stopped here and got food and waited for AAA. Â now it has become a regular spot for use when we head to mammoth for snowboarding, or out to dove springs to dirtbike. Â we always make a stop either on the way up, or on the way back down. Â portions are large, and they give you a ton of fries. Â i usually get the colossal burger which is a cheeseburger with pastrami ontop, or a chili size. Â both are huge and come with a huge order of steak fries with seasoning salt on them which are amazing. Â you will not leave here hungry unless you just have a bottomless pit for a stomach
Review Source:In the middle of so many trash restaurants and locations, and low expectation small town food, this primo burger is surprisingly delicious, and the prices are NOT exaggerated at all. Actually, a good cheeseburger/fries/soda combo is a little over $5. I think that's a good deal.
The fries are BIG, and they serve a lot of them with your burger, which is also pretty big, and tasty! =]
I've had nothing but good experiences at this place. And i'm pretty sure all the 'locals' would recommend it. Stop on by if you're going through mojave!
I really wanted to like this place so I'd have someplace not-a-chain to go to on the drive between San Diego and Mammoth Lakes. Alas, the food was about as good as if I'd pan fried a burger patty that had been in my freezer for about a year.
It is possible that this is the best place to eat in Mojave, though. /cityslicker
We stopped at this place on a trip back to LA from Mammoth, after hearing great things. I was beyond impressed!
It's a little roadside, truckstop-ish cafe on the highway, nothing you'd notice if you didn't know about it already. Get past the outdated decor and creepy pig holding the Specials sign, and you're in for a treat. The ladies who take your order aren't like anything you'd find in so cal, calling you "honey" and "sugar" and making you feel at home. Self-serve coffee pots and tea give it even more of a diner feel.
The menu has EVERYTHING, breakfast all day, Mexican, lunch, dinner, shakes and malts in every flavor imaginable ("If you don't see a flavor you want, ask us" the sign says), and for CHEAP! $4 will get you 2 pancakes, 2 sausages, 2 pieces of bacon, and 2 eggs. We split the pastrami combo with fries and a drink ($7) and a side of fried zucchini ($3).
The pastrami was delicious and an overwhelming ratio of pastrami over bread, and was also approved of by my partner in crime who is very knowledgeable about his pastrami. I could barely finish my half sandwich. The zucchini were fried in long sticks, served on a huge plate with 2 containers of ranch dressing. We tore them up and still filled a whole to-go box of them to take home.
I absolutely loved this place. The only thing holding it back from 5-star status is the nasty restroom..... I know it's an old school diner/truck stop, but there still could be a cleaner restroom; I've even seen cleaner at parks and rest stops. Hey, at least there was a mirror!
i think we found a new regular stop for Mammoth trips.
my boss kept raving about these damn breakfast burritos she's in love with so she convinced me to get one. random joint on the state highway has got to be promising right?
i chose the healthiest meat option: chorizo!!! i was expecting it to be juicy, fatty, tender. i could barely tell there was any meat in it. all i tasted was the potatoes (very good actually). i saw a brown-ish ground up substance but thought those were beans. the salsa was more like 4 tiny cubes of tomatoes. i'm sure there were other ingredients but this was just a disappointment. big serving though!
This place is legit.
It looks like a mom & pop burger joint, but the menu has EVERYTHING. Serves all meals all the time, and it ranges from pancakes and breakfast burritos to burgers, sandwiches, malts, salads, and a steak dinner.
Has the setup of a typical fast food joint (drive through and dining room with ordering window). All of our food was decent and well worth the relatively cheap prices.
When I go dirt bike riding out near Ridgecrest, this is a must-stop place. Twice! Once on the way out for an amazing and filling breakfast burrito, and once on the return for an outstanding patty melt and real chocolate malt.
Primo Burgers absolutely rocks. If you're in the burger or pastrami or breakfast burrito mood, there's no use to go to a chain you've been to hundreds of times. The people at Primo are super-nice, and they obviously care about what they're doing. Wouldn't you rather support a place with an attitude like that, rather than a faceless mega-corporation?
As someone who just moved to the area, Primos has become a fast favorite. They have the BEST Pastrami sandwich I have ever tasted. The ladies there are very nice and make you feel welcome. The prices there are surprisingly low compared to other non-commercial establishments in the area.
Review Source:I've often overlooked Primo Burger en route to the Sierra due to its not so prime location, but nevermore. Firstly, they have quite an extensive menu for a place lacking table service. As others have mentioned the counterstaff are friendly and service overall is great. We split a mushroom burger and a gluttonous fried vegetable sampler. The burger was decent, way better than you'd find at any of the nearby fast food places. While a bit lacking in seasoning the veggie sampler was freshly prepared. Â The crowd is pure Mojave so enjoy.
Review Source:i had to give this place some love. 5 stars because its personal to me.
i went to high school in mojave (sad i know). i lived out there from age 13-19 (not mojave, actually california city, but there wasnt a high school in cal city at the time so we had to bus it to mojave). so primos has been in my life for quite some time, i still make it a point to swing by for some fried mushrooms everytime im driving out to see my family. Â in fact i just ate there yesterday while i was exiting town after easter. the mushroom burger is two thumbs way up.
im pretty sure the ladies who work there have been there for as long as i can remember. sometimes they might seem like they're in a bad mood, but then they call you "honey" or "sugar" and you feel the love.
the decor is interesting, a lot of autographed pics of celebs old and new. i remember when i was in high school everyone went crazy because the backstreet boys stopped and ate there while they were filming a video. big whoop lol.
it looks kinda janky from the outside as well as the inside, but its got heart. Mojave is basically a truckstop town, but people actually do live there. and now that they built a high school in cal city, less people are bussed out there for school. so i cant imagine how many people actually attend now (my graduating class was less than 100 people, and a lot of us werent from mojave)
give Primos a shot if you're passing thru, you wont be sorry. the fried zucchini is delicious, they hook you up with the ranch too. fried mushrooms, yum. french fries, yum. i swear i dont eat that much fried food!
everything ive ever eaten from primos in all my years has been top notch. dont let the surroundings fool you, your belly will thank you.
ps. they serve breakfast and dinner all day, and if you get there before 11 the breakfast plates have special prices.
I came hungry and I left full. I mean, that's good.
The food was alright, fries were pretty good. Veggies on my Frisco Burger looked fresh. Fried zucchini wasn't all that good, mushy zucchini in lots of chewy batter definitely sits heavily.
I mean, it wasn't bad per se, and for where it is, if you're hungry, you'll leave with food in your stomach.
Great dive, side of the road restaurant. Decided to stop due to the great reviews on yelp. So glad we did. Be sure to check out all of the specials that are written on the windows outside. This place is nothing special from the outside, or the inside for that matter but the food is good road side food. Cheap, cheap, cheap... We had two full breakfasts with drinks for $10.36. Large portions. So much to choose from. Breakfast, lunch and dinner served all day. When you walk in large menu on wall, once ready place your order at either window and then your food will be brought out to your table. I wish I had more opportunies to visit this road side restaurant.
Review Source:I stopped here based on these recommendations, and they were right. Great food, very reasonably priced. I went with Patti K's recommendation of the Breakfast burrito, and was quite pleased. Great Farmer Bros. coffee, too.
I had always stopped at Mike's Restaurant, but my last trip found it to be just "okay." and bit pricier than I feel it deserves to be. I think I have a new favorite when I pass this way.
Breakfast burritos! Breakfast burritos! Breakfast burritos!
They are sublime. Just the perfect amount of salsa, eggs, meat and hash browns rolled into nearly perfect road food. And HUGE! Luckily, they cut them in half for you.
They will keep you satisfied for hours. They could easily feed two people. But I can never resist, eat it all, and I feel like I'm going to explode for a few hours.
My favorite is the sausage. I've had the ham and chorizo. I hate chorizo (my order got swapped with someone else's and I didn't realize until I was back on Hwy 58) but even that was good. The next time I came in Barbie remembered they'd messed up my order and I got a freebie.
The iced tea is pretty good, too.
The ambience isn't all that - the building's previous life was as a Del Taco. But I'd guess most people aren't expecting much in Mojave. :]
Half the time I come here there are two or three California Highway Patrol cars parked outside. Now these are cops who have a huge amount of territory to cover -- and they take their meal breaks at Barbie's Primo Burgers. It's a good sign.
This place is actually called Barbie's Primo Burgers....and everything else.
I have never seen such a mish-mosh of menu items in my life! I fully expect the next time I roll through on the way to/fro Mammoth I will find they have added sushi to the boards.
I have had mostly junk-y type food items here. Fried zucchini rocks. The hamburger, fresh from the grill and seasoned french fries plus a drink is only around four dollars. So far I haven't had anything I have disliked. It seems to be frequented by the locals as much as those passing through. Â You would think with such an array of choices it would be crap-town but Barbie's seems to pull through.
Now I am just waiting to see what the spicy tuna roll is going to taste like.
