This was my first trip to Big Sur and even though everyone told me I would love it, I was blown away by the beauty and magnitude of this area of the Pacific Coast. The Ragged Point Inn was the cherry on top of the ice cream sundae that was our trip to California. The gas fireplace in the room was an unexpected and romantic touch and the view from our room was indescribably beautiful! Our two nights there were extremely romantic and comfortable. We had everything we needed between the mini mart and the onsite restaurant, which was fantastic. We kept saying that we wanted to get remarried so we could have our wedding here! The staff at the front desk were very friendly and helpful and gave us recommendations about things to do and places to eat. If we ever return to this area we will definitely stay here again!
Review Source:The views are incredible, the rooms are ok, but are not worth the cash, the help in the lobby was nice but there was a woman who seemed to be running things that did not handle her authority well and her attitude extends past her employees and on to the guests. She was not amusing. The restaurant is pretty but the food is waaaay below standard.
Review Source:Our stay at Ragged Point was amazing. Â We went up for our anniversary and stayed in one of the upper cliff-side suites. Â The room was extremely clean with a king bed, fireplace, jacuzzi bathtub and balcony. Â From our room we could see down the coast line for miles and it was stunning. Â I loved waking up in the morning to the sound and views of the ocean. Â The staff at check in were nice and friendly. Â They made us feel welcome and "at home". Â There is a beautiful trail that leads down from the resort to a private beach that is breath taking! Â Our dinner at the restaurant was fantastic!!! Â The Chef is top notch with an amazing menu to choose from. Â We will definitely be going back to visit.
Review Source:Anniversary weekend was not what we anticipated.
Ran out of hot water, someone slept in their car running the car heater all night so the sound continued running on and off all night it was the sound of a generator. We had a horrible night sleep it was out side our balcony. Â The room needs some TLC, carpet is needed. Â We will never stay here again due to this bad night of sleep!
The staff was great and informative.

I have such mixed feelings about this Inn, I would give the location a 5, Â and the wedding planner a 5+, Â but our room was a 1, maybe a 2 if you add a point because it was clean. Went for a weekend for my sister's wedding - the room that we received was nothing like the room photos on the website. Very disappointing. Â My sister said that she had told me that the rooms were not as nice as the photos, her Wedding Coordinator Gloria took her on a site tour before she booked the wedding, making sure she knew everything about the Inn. Anyway, Â I did not remember and was very disappointed, not a good deal at all. Would have rather stayed on Moonstone Drive in Cambria and could have for the price. Â However, my sister's wedding was fabulous, the location is gorgeous and every detail of the wedding itself was perfect. Â Gloria and her staff put on a fabulous wedding, the set-up was beautiful. Everything my sister wanted. Â Gloria went out of the way to make sure everyone had what they needed, the service was excellent and the event memorable. Â Gloria lives in near by Cambria so she was able to tell me all about things to do and see in the area. Anyway, I would not recommend staying at Ragged Point, maybe stop for a drink to enjoy the view.
Review Source:We had an upper cliffside room overlooking the ocean. Â The room was spotless and the view was absolutely breathtaking. Â Our room also had a gas fireplace, king-size bed, and a balcony with two chairs. Â Definite perks there.
Downsides? Â The price was definitely a bit steep and this place is situated a solid 65 minute drive from the rest of what's happening in Big Sur.
Had Lunch here yesterday. Great views and nice facility. Had a BLT with potato salad. They wrecked the BLT by putting some kind of white sauce on it-killed the taste of what would have been a good sandwich. The salad was discusting also. The best thing was watching the birds eat food off the plates of other people who left most of their foods also.
Review Source:An unexpected journey down US1 from Redwood Shores lead us to this amazing restaurant. Â Thinking we had stumbled on a simple diner we were instead at a very nice restaurant. Â The prime rib was amongst the best I have had and my family loved their avocado covered hamburgers. Â
To boot, our server Aaron (even though only 15 minutes to closing time) was friendly, warm, and generous. Â He both pointed out the wonderful moon cresting over the mountain (a first for us Floridians) and gave disposable containers of water and treats for my two dogs. Â
Because of this my wife and I are planning a return visit to the Inn.
I can see how this place could be hit or miss. We had a great weekend here, so I'm giving 4 stars: I might stay here again, but I would also like to try the other places in this area to see how it measures up.
Service at check-in was a bit rushed, we didn't feel "special" as people like to feel when they're paying $230 incl. taxes for a room.
We had everything we needed (extra blanket and extra pillows in the room), the fire place worked, the room looked nice although I would have expected "more" for the price. I think it has to be noted you're paying for the ocean view here, and you do get the ocean view. There's a fence and you'll have to walk 5 steps, but yup it's there. The room is kinda basic, except for the fireplace which adds some atmosphere.
You don't get any privacy with the water. There's one room next to the other. You have a bench behind your room, but if you go closer to the water you'll see everyone else doing the same.
A plus point here was the nature trail, which you can hike even if you're not staying at the inn. It's on their property though. The trail leads all the way across some strangely natural-seeming herb garden down to a black sand beach.
Breakfast is not included in your stay, you have the option to eat at the Ragged Point Restaurant, for which I have given a separate review.
This such a great place located in the middle of paradise. Â the setting is magnificent. Â the folks who gripe about the lack of cell phone coverage astound me, you don't come to be online.
We had a second floor room on the south coast that was in great shape, had a fridge and was smartly done.
Coffee shop was great, good coffee (and I rarely say that) and nice pastries. Â We were happy with our dinner.
Sundown was a major highlight, if you come here, just chill, enjoy yourself, you company and big sur.
Old room, old paint, chipped toilet seat, mold on some bathroom fixtures, but. . .good water pressure. :)
$265 for premium room we stayed in. Â Wireless not included. Â
Wireless - extra charge $4.95/hour or $9.99/day -- PER COMPUTER.
I suppose ideally at the coast, you would be phone and WIFI free but when you're on the road working with an internet marketing company, you're in trouble! Â However, it's not the lack of access that hurt. Â What disappointed me most was that the staff was well instructed to be very clear on policies, but the effect was that place seemed to lack warmth and hospitality. Â Responses like the Internet is run by another company (they've contracted with?), and that if we wanted to check out an hour later than normal -- it would cost $30 more. Â
There was free water to drink from the tap. Â Our view was of a fence overlooking the ocean, next to a trail where children ran and people smoked pot at 7am as they took in the scenic view. Â I have asthma so that was an unexpected perk of the accomodations.
On a positive note, breakfast was good the morning we left, our waitress was prompt. Â And the guy who runs the snack shop is nice and smiley and doesn't mind getting you extra water for your tea.
Had a spectacular view (at $430.00/night) it should be. Rooms had NO amenities. Â View was great until people started moving their chairs in front of window. Â Unfortunately when we opened door to porch screen door immediately fell off. Â We tried to leave door open but the constant 24/7 noise from water pump etc made it impossible to listen to ocean.
Restaurant was awful. My wife sent back her meal (first time in 28yrs).
Overall the place is a real nice idea but the reality of the lack of effort to make it truly first class makes it not worth the money.
Excellent place to eat! The view is simply incredible! It is near Big Sur and located on a scenic bluff over looking the ocean. Â We had questions about the menu and the waiter was extremely knowledgable about each plate. I ordered Ribeye and it was decent (not great though). My wife had Bacon-wrapped Filet Mignon and loved it. Marcus had a Porterhouse and loved that "it was perfectly cooked". Catherine had Sirloin and thought it was chewy. Though the food was not a five, the overall experience was a five, so we give this place a four. About the price, I thought it was fair, maybe in the Woodranch price range (Ribeye was $26).
Review Source:If you are looking tranquility, beauty, inspiration... this place gets the work done, even beyond expectations.
Features I loved:
-No cell phone service beside at&t (I'm sprint, yes!)
-Terrible satellite wifi internet not worth the try, or so I've been told at the front desk.
-Restaurant serves until 9pm; convenient store and lobby closes at 10. So you are really by yourself, and have to be, until 8am the next day.
-TV with only 3-4 good reception channels, so you'd rather walk to the cliff, contemplate and think.
-The room (L2) was big, clean and comfy.
-Two hikes start right next to the hotel:
*The morning wake-up switchbacks to the little beach (20 min).
**The 7 miles loop in the gorgeous hills overlooking the ocean. For this one, look on a map or buy one BEFORE your departure. They don't have any map or guide with this hike at the hotel, and there is no sign on the trail to guide you. If you just naively follow the main trail, as I did, you will end up walking 7-8 miles straight away from the hotel and then turn around because you're obviously not closing a loop. So, total 15 miles :) Absolutely marvelous though.
So why not 5 stars?
- $169 is a lot of money for one night.
- My room had no fridge.
- Vegetarian options at the restaurant are terrible. Service and atmosphere are great though.
In summary, I had the greatest time there, and I may very well come again if my finances are ok with that.
Stayed here for the first time on the trip up the Hwy 1.
Rooms and atmosphere: We had a ground level ocean front view. Amazing. The rooms themselves were cozy, dated but not broken down, not fancy, kind of like a cabin feel. No real amenities, Â not that you really need them because of the awesome views. Â They'd be perfect with a kitchenette. I don't know if the other rooms had those, but ours didn't.
The rest of the property is situated on top of a cliff so of course, you will have a 360 degree view of pure beauty. I can see why this would be a popular wedding spot. The price is good for what views you get despite the lack of amenities. Only complaint was the food wasn't that outstanding at the only closest restaurant which is right on the property. It is a bit pricey for the food quality but then again, I'd probably charge that much too if there is nothing else around. But I'd say we'd stay here again for sure.
The view is amazing. Everything else was not. We paid $531 for 2 nights.
The service was terrible:
They mixed up the dates I was staying and argued that I was a no call no show. Finally the women said she could give me a downstairs room for my second night, because no upstairs rooms were available. she switched us to the "deluxe" downstairs room, but charged us the same as if we had an upstairs room. No one checked in to the any of the upstairs rooms in our building that night...
No cell reception for most people, but they do not have phones in the rooms. Internet is not provided. No tide charts available for guests. Rooms are old and drab. Our bed was broken. Refrigerator was left unplugged and smelled awful.
Food:
Servers were friendly, but the place was not staffed well enough. Waited forever for dinner. Overpriced for being on the low side of mediocre. $90 for dinner for 2. Next night $35 for 2 burgers.
I agree with Anthony W. Their motto should be, "We don't care, because we don't have to."
Will not stay there again. Tons of amazing views on Big Sur Coast.
The view is 5 stars; the service is 2 at best. Their motto should be, "We don't care, because we don't have to." Make sure you are NOT getting a "Garden Room." I was there for a wedding party and all they had left was room L-7 (awesome band; crappy room). We paid over $400 for two nights - about the same as our other friends. The difference is that our friends' rooms had beautiful ocean views, fireplaces, decent bathrooms, etc. Out room looks like a place where one might shoot a really bad porn spread. It looked like a Motel 6. When I dropped off my key the next morning, I told the clerk at the front desk that L7 is the worst room at that hotel. She interrupted me to tell me the worst room is L5, so live and learn, I guess.
In the nicer rooms, one friend was without heat and the front desk blew them off. In another friend's room, there was a steady shower of termite casting raining down on his bead.
They don't have to offer good service because the views are great. Make sure you know what room you're getting a good room when you book or you'll end up spending over $200 a night for a Days Inn experience. Desk staff are real assholes.
My roommate and I were recently on a road trip up the coast and hit some pretty dense fog around San Simeon. After driving ~20 mph and not being able to see much, we happened upon the Ragged Point Inn. Â Despite the fact we couldn't actually see much of the grounds due to the fog, the room rates were reasonable and they had a restaurant. Sold!
We were given a room "with a view" and let me tell you that when I woke up the next day, that view was unreal. Our room was right on the cliff overlooking the Pacific. They also have a trail you can walk through the grounds on leading to an overlook that showcases highway 1 and the cliffs...amazing!
The main restaurant was decently priced (considering it's the only thing around) and the food was pretty good (I had a pasta dish and roasted garlic sourdough bread). The snack bar isn't as reasonably priced but the $7 breakfast sandwich I had was probably the best one I've ever eaten. I don't know where they get their bread there but man oh man it is the tops!
This certainly wasn't a place I planned on stopping but I am extremely glad I did. If you plan on traveling up the coast and find yourself looking for a room before you get to the Big Sur area...definitely stop here...and ask for an ocean view room.
This place has amazing views!! Worth stopping and taking a few pictures at. Accommodations are pricey but worth it. Looks like a great place for an intimate wedding.
However Caveat Emptor, they have a total moron working in the gas station. No credit card machine at pump you have to pay inside. Told the guy $30 and went to the restroom. Â He filled it...gas is $5.50+/gallon thank God I had half a tank spent somewhere around $85. Â Husband showed me some books and the jerk accused me of stealing them after overcharging me on the gas. After a few minutes of arguing with him (mind you I am pregnant) and the next guy in line getting highly annoyed. He dropped it. Worst experience had to fight to keep my temper under control.
PROS:
Beautiful, breathtaking views
Good hiking path down to the beach - moderate difficulty
Surprisingly good restaurant on-site
The rooms have fireplaces
CONS:
The rooms are fairly spartan
The beds are very hard and uncomfortable
No computer center (but there is wi-fi)
Not close to any other shops or restaurants (but this is just how Big Sur is, for the most part.)
All in all, a good place to stay for a few nights if your back can handle the hard beds! Â The views are priceless!
Did not stay at the Inn but found this place accidentally. PCH was closed and this was the only sign of civilization in this beautiful rugged stretch.
Has a gas station, mini mart, plenty of parking, outdoor eating area, a dine-in restaurant, restrooms, outdoor cafe, awesome view, trail to the beach and plenty of charm.
Great place for church retreats, couple's getaway, destination wedding, family reunion site. You could see a common room with walls so it it could out both sides of the building... to view both the north and south stretches of the coast.
Beautiful!
This place has become a regular lunch stopover on the drive through Big Sur. Gorgeous views of the coastline make it all worth it.
The food is good, but there is a real lack of veggie options. I had the black bean burger which was good - but I was pretty hungry and had no real choice. I am told the non-veggie options are quite nice and in any case, it's a great place to relax and enjoy the views.
Every now and again, life pauses to take your breath away.
Such a moment occurred, for me, when, on a road trip from San Simeon to Monterey, we stopped off at Ragged Point for a bathroom break and snack.
After walking to the middle of this property, feeling slightly tired and not really looking forward to fighting tourist traffic all the way up Highway one, I looked to the right and was absolutely gobsmacked by the spectroscopic grandeur offered by Ragged Points view of Big Sur, right there in the middle of this little unassuming island halfway up the Santa Lucia Mountains.
Worth a stop for the view alone, yelpers!
I did not eat here. I only stopped by for the view and the hike down the beach.
It has one of the most amazing views around. We even hiked down to see the beach and the trickling waterfall. It's strenuous going up (maybe for me but I saw kids who climbed that hill as if it was just a walk in the park) but I thought it was very worthwhile.
My brother and bf liked this place a lot. I would definitely love to have a wedding here just because of the beautiful scenery.
Decor is dated but the rooms are clean. Beds are firm. Fireplace actually works. Views are beautiful. Real coffee and tea in-room, not some nasty Lipton or Folgers crap.
Expensive, but anywhere in the area with a lower price almost guarantees The Nasty. The restaurant is similarly overpriced but the portions are adequate.
Management responded sympathetically when we pointed out that perhaps 1am was not the best time for the SCARILY LOUD SPRINKLERS to go off right outside our room.
In summary: It's... OK. Works in a pinch when Treebones is booked solid.
Their website is misleading when it comes to booking a room. We didn't get the room we wanted. We had no fireplace, we had no cliff view, and it was 175 bucks!?! The jacuzzi was just for one person. It was a bathtub with jets!?! AND it was DIRTY FILTHY YUCK... I was so grossed out after the jacuzzi experience because after I drained it, there was all these brown kaka looking bits coming out!
We were suppose to stay 3 nights at this place for our one year anniversary, but it got cut to 1 night. We canceled the last two nights, and found a romantic spot in the heart of Big Sur.
The manager was rude. It would be nice if she had some classes in customer service.
Don't stay here. It cost too way too much!
The only thing I have to complement about this place is the view however, find another place!
This is my first time giving a really really bad review.... =/
After storming out of Whale Watcher's Café, we were left hungry, disappointed and desperate. We carried on Highway 1 heading South in our search for some nourishment. We weren't looking for anything fancy. We were hoping for a small dive that serves quick quality food.
About 20 miles from the frustration was Ragged Point Inn. It was the only development we've seen for miles so we stopped. There, they had lodging, a cute outdoor area for dining, a restaurant, a café, a convenience store and a snack shack.
The snack shack was perfect - quick, cheap, plain and simple. They serve burgers, dogs, sammiches and even fried chicken! The cook/cashier looked like he just got out of jail, flossing his sleeves and neck tattoos.
I was really close to ordering the fried chicken, but it was too early for a fat meal, so I ordered the fried egg sammich instead. I asked for over medium, but it came out over hard. The eggs had black streaks on it and I couldn't figure out what it was. Since I couldn't taste anything wrong with it, I ate it anyway. There was nothing special about it... it was kinda blah.
The BF got the hot dog and he said he didn't like it that much. But he did enjoy the coffee he ordered from the restaurant/café across from the snack shack.
From the front, Ragged Point Inn looks simple and boring, but there's a trail that leads to the back with views of the gorgeous sea cliffs. We didn't stay too long since it was too foggy.
I want to give this place 5 stars for the view, but the mediocrity in the food dropped the score down to 3.
This review is strictly for the dine-out eatery on the side of the Inn.
My friends and I went up to Big Sur and Marin for a week long camping trip and went up the Coast Highway. Â Anyways, one of my friends suggested going to the Ragged Point Inn for lunch since she had heard about it from a friend of hers. Â We ended up here for lunch and opted for the dine-out eatery instead of the restaurant since we were just shortly stopping.
I wasn't too pleased with the selection choice, but what more can you ask from a dine-out eatery. Â For my meal I had the herbed chicken sandwich and split a chili-cheese fry with a friend. Â I was surprised at how good the herbed chicken sandwich was, honestly. Â I probably said "this is surprisingly really good" about 10x while eating it. Â It was flavorful, tasty, and hit the spot. Â However, I have had better chili-cheese fries than those here. Â I think what irked me was that the cheese on the chili-cheese fries was not melted; just simply sprinkled over the chili in hopes to melt...which it didn't. Â Call me picky, but it's just how I like my chili-cheese fries! Â Overall though, the chili-cheese fries were tasty as well. Â Definitely not a bad stopping spot as you make your way up or down the coast!
Also, if you don't eat it's a great place to just stop and enjoy the scenic view.
MIXED FEELINGS...
My wife and I stayed here on our way down the coast during our honeymoon a couple weeks ago. The room was large but decorated very oddly. The view was great... but INFESTED WITH SPIDERS! The spiders changed the mood quickly as my wife hates them! The staff was helpful and nice. The restaurant had surprisingly decent food. I felt it may have been a bit overpriced... but it was the friday before the fourth. I would come back if they could assure there were no spiders and the price was a little better. Oh, get gas before you come! I didn't see the price this time but last time I was in the area (last September) I had to get gas there and I have never payed that much for gas in my life!
5 stars for location. It's mindblowingly gorgeous here. The hotel and grounds are on a ragged cliff 350 feet above the ocean, across Highway One from beautiful mountains. Since it's on a point, you've got curvy coastline views in both directions. The grounds are nicely landscaped and well maintained, with lots of vista points, little gardens, a pond. It's foggy a lot here, but (in the summer, anyway) the fog lifts for a few hours a day. The fog itself is beautiful and gives the place a hushed, peaceful quality, and the process of the fog lifting is fantastic to watch. They've got a treacherous, poorly maintained trail down to a small beach area, and though it's quite possible that you could kill yourself on the way down, it's worth it. Down below you can explore little caves and tidepools, see teeny tiny frogs, and take a nap on a rock.
The rooms are expensive for what you get for the room itself, but the cliffside rooms have incredible views. The restaurant is similarly a bit expensive for the food, but again you're paying for location and view. Totally worth it. I love this place.
Ok, so maybe I was expecting more! Here is a quick run down:
Beds where horrible! Hard as a rock, thin sheets, flat pillows, and the promised view was not that great, in fact I actually had a nice view of some garbage on the cliffside....for $400 bucks! wow...ok.
The next morning, I decided I was going to cut the trip short but was still wishing it would get better so I went to get a bite to eat.....The food was horrible, I was really upset with the total experience and wound up cutting my 3 day trip short after the 1st night spent there.
I should have just spent the extra $ and went to the Ventana Inn or Treebones and got a nice yurt or guesthouse. Or Maybe I expected more from this place but honestly, it was just bad.
There is no way to write an objective review of this place! Â I was bribed by the ultimate owner of this patch of land, God herself!
I have stopped at Ragged Point many times on my treks up the Coast Highway, but only for a quick photo-op, lunch or bathroom break. Â The view is always amazing and that feeling of being at the edge of the world will hit you the moment you walk out on the cliff side viewing deck.
In my planning the ultimate romantic three day road trip I decided that Ragged Point must be included on the itinerary. Â Booking a room was simple using their web site. Â I called just to make sure everything was in order because....well I had to have it perfect.
The rooms are basic and a bit dated in decor but all you have to do is open the drapes and take a deep breath! Â WHOA! Â I've added a picture of our room's view to the collection on this Yelp listing. Â Our room (# 21 end unit) was huge, fully equipped with mini refrigerator, LCD TV, gas fireplace, coffee maker and king size bed. The place was clean and neat with plenty of extra pillows and blankets. Â The Inn prides itself on not having phones in the rooms. With little to no cell reception this is truly a get away type of place. Â If you really need to make a call home there are a few pay phones about the property.
Now on to the bribes, we were treated to the complimentary "Sunset over the Pacific" package which includes front row seats to the most spectacular show in all of California. Â The nice part of this show is you are allowed to bring in your own Champagne or wine. Â I walked up to the Inn's restaurant and borrowed a couple of glasses so we wouldn't have to waste the free plastic cups in the room. Â We shared the cliff deck with another couple and let our hill side bench seats go to waste. I recommend if you go for the sunset show to get there early and stay late. Â The colors are amazing and change every few minutes.
After sunset the place gets very quiet with little to no traffic passing by. Â The restaurant is cute and the service is great. Â I had a serious Champagne buzz going on so I can't really review the food. Heck I don't even remember what I ordered; I just know it didn't suck like most hotel food. Â I do remember the host offering some kind of aphrodisiac cheese cake or something like that. Good grief did he miss the sunset or what!?
The next morning we took advantage of the free "Nature Adventure Trail Self Guided Tour". Â I recommend you wear comfy clothing and a sturdy pair of shoes. The trail is pretty rustic and can be a bit tricky at points. My guess is the decent to be a little over 400 feet from cliff to beach in a quarter mile or so. The trail switch-backs are steep and will tax your knees on the way down. During the winter and early spring keep an eye out for the water falls. Â Once at the beach take time to explore this cute little cove. You'll feel like you are a million miles from civilization. The hike out is a chore for some of us outta shape guys but no worries the scenery makes it all worth it.
Please do not ask the front desk for access to these special freebies, they are only issued by a higher power, no reservations necessary. Â The rooms are another story. Â Book as far in advance as you can to be sure you get inn. Â Ragged Point Inn and Resort only has 30 rooms.
The entire staff seems to be genuinely happy to help out. Â It must be the ocean air or an overdose of those sunsets. Â
I'll be coming back here again for my next sunset fix.
Check out the pictures!
Spectaular...no better place to break up the long 2 day amazing drive up the PGH 1.
-Clean,
-Helpful staff(make sure you call if you will be checking in after 6)
-One of the most scenic, rustic views of the edge of the U.S.
-We got up early and braved the trail down to the beach...SO worth it, but we prepared for a workout!
-Lunch at the food window before we headed out had better sandwiches than a previous dinner at a sit-down location a bit north.
-Reasonably priced
-A breath of fresh air...much recommended!
You know them old beer commercials where they go "it doesn't get any better than this"? Â Well I said that at least 10 times while I was at the Ragged Point Inn.
The backstory: Some very dear friends decided to have a green wedding (they're very Earth friendly). Â This 'green wedding' would require me to:
a) Rent a small SUV
b) Drive over 250 miles to get there
c) Pay $4.89 per gallon for gas while I was there
d) Spend money like I was giving it away
e) Give up all communication with the outside world as cell phones don't get a signal
f) Question the whole concept of a 'green wedding'
But like I said, these were dear friends. Â As this trip would include my l.o.m.l (love of my life) and the Spawn of our love (my lil crime partner) it would require MAJOR pre-planning. Â Guests were encouraged to camp near the wedding site, but we don't really roll like that so we chose option B which was to rent a room nearby. Â
On top of being one of the most beautiful places on Earth that you can visit Big Sur has got to be one of the most expensive. Â There are essentially three types of lodgings you can find in Big Sur: Â Campgrounds (perfect for the outdoorsy type), Resorts (perfect for those who don't mind tossing $1,000 a night (or more) to stay in a piece of Heaven on Earth and finally there are the assortment of "affordable Hotels" for the rest of mankind. Â My only warning is to choose carefully. Â As there were really only about 5 places to choose from near the wedding site and several of the websites had words like 'Charming'(dated), 'Rustic' (rundown), and Quaint (filthy) along with corresponding pictures we opted for the Ragged Point Inn.
As Loml and I knew this road trip could prove disastrous with our young Ninja we set out with the mentality that this would be our first vacation as a Clan. Â First off, I opted for the 'Luxury Room'. Â My biggest fear was that at $289 a night the pics of the room online still looked dated. Â As I usually try to rent rooms high on the 'sensual' factor when I travel with Loml I was looking for any angle to save my ass at this point.
Think of a Ski Lodge that is on the edge of a cliff facing the expanse of the blue Pacific and that pretty much sums of the feel of the place. Â Room 7 at the Ragged Point Inn is not all that bad. Â It's definitely not the sort of 'luxury' you get in the city. Â All it's truly missing is upgraded bedding and linens. Â In a nutshell it was:
Spacious-it included a small sitting area (2 comfy sofa chairs) next to a thermostat controlled gas fireplace and small eating area (small table and 2 more chairs) next to a bank of windows and private balcony with additional seating all facing the cliff shoreline.
Clean- I can't emphasize this enough, we had some friends that stayed elsewhere who sound like they would have been cleaner had they gone camping
Comfortable- See remarks about spacious and toss in a whirlpool tub that two creative minds can find comfort in. Also include an in-room coffeemaker, mini-fridge, plates and utensils. Â For optimum comfort open the balcony door, crank up the fireplace and sit back as you feel the distinct currents of hot and cool air with the sound of water breaking on the shore as you stare out in a daze...good times.
Inspiring- Yeah, I said it. Â Our young Spawn awoke the first night about 2am and wasn't having it. Â After quickly going through our repertoire of ways to soothe him I walked over to the window and flung open the curtains...instant silence. Â The moonlight was basking the ocean in a white sheen that was unlike anything I had witnessed. Â Five minutes later the young Ninja was out. Â About 45 minutes later I put him down...it was an incredible show.
The next night when he awoke I quickly volunteered to soothe him. Â This sequel was just as stunning as the original. Â I was able to truly appreciate the effect that time of night has on the wondrous illusion you see. Â On the third night I sat on the balcony anticipating the moonlight. Â Around 11:30pm there was no sight of the moon so I called it quits. Â Around midnight you could see the moon beginning to crest over the hills that run parallel to the coast line. Â I awoke several times that night to marvel at the path the moonlight made over the water. Â Loml enjoyed it just as much as I although she did scold me for attempting to wake up the Spawn so he could catch his final glimpse.
Given the type of lodgings that are nearby, the place really is a steal. Â Yes, $300 a night is not Motel 6. Â But we heard some horror stories about some other options that really aren't THAT much cheaper. Â
In the end, the wedding was cool, but we left with the definite impression that we had experienced something truly wonderful during our stay at the Ragged Point Inn. Â That something wasn't the moonlight over the water for 3 consecutive nights, it was something else. Â I still can't put a finger on it, but I recommend this place to anyone traveling in the area.
A bunch of us used to do an "Annual Trip" down to Big Sur. Â I put the trip in quotes because it really isn't a big deal. Â Just an overnight trip on our bikes at a VERY leisurely pace. Â As most of you know, the Big Sur area here and HWY 1 are world class in terms of natural beauty. Â IMHO and experience, we could go head to head with any other destination, even the breathtaking fjords of Norway.
Anyhow, the Ragged Point Inn is a great base camp. Â Awesome views. Â Great location right off HWY 1, tons of parking and for those of you on bikes, the parking area is spacious. Â No need to feel cramped maneuvering around, etc. (which is common at a lot of the other, smaller stops).
There's also a gas station, mini-mart, and decent restaurant on the grounds.
One of my favorite places to stay in this area.
Too new to be rustic, but not stylishly modern, Ragged Point's strengths are not in sumptuous amenities or exquisite food but the idyllic environment and location. Constructed of redwood timbers and encased in panels of glass, the restaurant area is charming and casual, serving tasty, though not gastronomically interesting food. Which, by the way, tastes better on the patio in the sunlight.
Resting on a bluff provides the otherwise basic and clean rooms at the inn views of splendor. Some can even be seen from the jacuzzi tub. Bring your bath salts, hiking shoes to tackle the abundance of fantastic trails, an eager sweetheart and ditch the cell phone for days of decompression and beauty.
This review is for the restaurant at Ragged Inn. Â I have eaten here several times, but never stayed at the inn.
The restaurant is very pretty, with redwood post and beam construction and floor to ceiling windows, and there is a fireplace to warm up the place on cool days.  The outdoor, stone patio is my favorite place to sit  during good weather.
Service is friendly and the food is very good. The lunch menu offers filling salads, delicious sandwiches, soups, and daily specials. Â The dinner menu has the usual fresh fish, seafood, and meats, usually served with in-season side dishes. Â All is well prepared and tasty. Â
The best thing of all has to be the pleasant atmosphere here. Â The setting is absolutely stunning, and that is enough of a draw to get me to eat at the Ragged Point restaurant again. Â If you are coming here for dinner, I highly recommend that you arrive when it is still light outside and take time to walk around the grounds and peer over the edge of the cliff. Â Spetacular! Â
The setting and scenery gets 5+ stars. Â It doesn't get much better than this. Â The food gets 3-4 stars.
