I ate there in the 70's and food was great but I went there last year and the food was God Awful the barbecue tasted like boiled meet with a barbecue suace poured on. The people working there was to busy sitting a back area talking to there friends and paid no attention to the diners unless you called them by name as if you knew them. I was greatly disppointed because I remember the many time we used to go there after church for lunch before going to see friends and family.
Review Source:For BBQ this place gets only three yelp stars only because it is a BBQ place and most people want to know "how was the BBQ"! Â With no sauce this is a GOOD tasting BBQ - good means no better than good! Â Overall this place gets many more yelp stars, so if you are curious read on!
Hash Browns cubed and fried (deep fried) - Â These were cooked very light, not brown, so they were perfect "Hash Blonds" I like cubed and fried Potatoes so much I have a "Cubed and Fried" yelp list and while I prefer them grilled these were fantastic! Worthy of somewhere near 5 yelp stars!
Slaw! Â Some call it BBQ Slaw, some call it Red Slaw = NO Mayo = YAY! Â YAYA! ! ! Â This Slaw also gets close to 5 yelp stars!
The only reason this place does not get five stars is the BBQ! Â Based on everything else this place gets so close to five stars for me I would give them five, so if you are interested in everything other than BBQ I recommend this place, if you are in the area!
Charm! Â This place has Hole-in-the-wall GREATNESS! Â My waitress seemed tired, yet very polite both adding to the charm, she called everyone honey even though I was the only one here that was not a regular - One woman was asleep in a booth nearby and another lady came in to the Restaurant just to ask the lady if she had any work she wanted her to do. Â Too Funny!
This BBQ joint/ Country Cooking diner always seemed worn and kinda tired looking, especially inside, but now it is down right seedy looking and feeling. There were only a couple of customers there when we arrived, only a couple more had wandered in by the time we finished and meal and left - much, much less busy than on our previous visits.
There apparently had been some ownership changes over the lastl year or so, seemingly within the same family, but with less than stellar results, and I guess there had been some sickness, as well. The result had been a drop in business, and some drop in the quality of the food served.
The Fried Chicken was crispy, well fried, but lacked real flavor (the portion was three small pieces, one of which was hard to identify where on the chicken it came from), and was under seasoned. The boiled potatoes were solid, as were the obviously canned Lima Beans. The hushpuppies are large, golf ball sized in fact, but with little substance or flavor.
The Country Style Steak was ok, with a thick gravy, and was a relatively small portion. The Beets were nice, the pintos also canned, but seasoned ok. The Corn Bread was dry to the point of being inedible.
The BBQ was, at best, ordinary, much less flavor than I had remembered. All in all, this was just ordinary food. The interior is barely being kept up - the left front of the booth we sat in was supported by an old ashtray to steady it. A shame, but I can't see coming back here, even as a drive by event.
