When I first drove by this place, scouting out the neighborhood for other reasons, I thought that Royal Oak was another corner bar that had long closed. Needless to say, a friend took me here for some of the best ribs and cole slaw that I've had in a good while. It's a total dive establishment - it doesn't look like much on the outside, but it's got a lot of flavor and history on the inside.
Royal Oak is the oldest bar in Youngstown - the first to reopen after Prohibition ceased, and it has its old timers that come and go with ease.
Just be sure to not mention the word "basketball" during the 24 Hours of Daytonna, and you'll be all right.
A blue collar bar tucked away at the corner of route 422 and Oak st. in y-town. Run by the Kennedy brothers. NowI've been coming to this place for over 6yrs now and I live in Cleveland. It is always for the same exact thing; smoked ribs, yes they actually use cherry wood in their smoker and you can taste the subtle hint of it. The ribs are baby back and there are several sauces to choose from. I always go for the hot raspberry BBQ sauce and always on the side so that I can taste that insanely good smoked goodness through & through. The sauce is an excellent blend of heat with a hint of raspberry. The dinner comes with Excellent crispy fresh cut fries and a little bun that is seasoned with garlic. The bun is hot and fresh and so delicious that I always get 2. It also comes with coleslaw but I am not a big fan of coleslaw so thats why I get 2 rolls instead. Plenty of other good things on the menu and their chicken wings use the same insanely good sauces. One more thing they start cooking the ribs on Tuesday and tend to run out so call if you are coming and ask if the ribs are available. I promise you if you are a fan of smoked foods you will NOT be disappointed!
Review Source:If you like wings this is the place to go! An added bonus would be the ribs and some other great food comes out of the kitchen! All this, coupled with cheap drinks made right, makes this a regular stop for our crew when we are out on the bikes!
Don't let the neighborhood scare you - great place!
Favorite.
Hands-down, the best barbecue I've ever had. Â The ribs are smoky, slightly-charred, juicy, and smothered in sauce. Â The wings are also, quite easily, the best in Youngstown - I usually ask for mine extra crispy. Â There's a wide variety of sauces to suit your taste.
The garlic rolls, mozz sticks, fries, onion rings and burgers are also top notch.
They're amazingly consistent - at least 20-30 trips and I've never been let down.
Beer is cheap, cold and refreshing. Â The service is great, and the atmosphere is perfect for a neighborhood bar and grill in Youngstown.
This review is basically pointless since no one in Youngstown uses Yelp, and most of Youngstown's population is already on the same page when it comes to the Oaks.
