Good sides, good ribs, good brisket. And it's byob?!
The drive is worth it for the view and the "away from the city" feel. It's relaxing once you get out there and it's really delicious.
I've been many times and it's always consistently good. I love their ribs. Heard their sausage and turkey is great too.
I know people don't always care about the sides but I love their potato salad and their coleslaw. Plus always great service to boot!
South Texas is BBQ country and Salt lick is doing it right. Their entrees are served with a bit of their mustard sauce and while the sauce is excellent, I would recommend asking for the meats 'dry'. This will give you an opportunity to enjoy the meats and their rubs right off the grill. The sauce can be added later if you wish. Take out your camera and the staff will walk you right up to the pit for some great shots.
Review Source:What else is there to say about The Salt Lick that hasn't be said already? It's some of the best bbq in town. Family style is the best way to go if you're in a big group. Be prepared to wait some, especially if it's a weekend or holiday. But waiting isn't a huge deal since you can BYOB it. Great a group of friends, fill up a cooler with beer, and prepare to hang out and get your fill of delicious smoked meats. I'm in love with their bread. I've never had softer bread and I don't think I ever will.
Review Source:came at 4:15pm on a rainy sunday and there was NO WAIT! woo hoo! we got seated IMMEDIATELY.
BYOB! we brought a 6pack of blue moons and asked for an ice bucket to put it in which they promptly provided.
they offer regular menu OR their family style all you can eat for $20 a person. we opted for the all you can eat. how it works is they bring out all the sides (potato salad, cole slaw, beans, bread, pickles, onions) and then a plate of heaping bbq (brisket, ribs, sausage) a plate at a time. they bring out a new plate of bbq once you've finished the old plate. they even let you have a to-go box to pack home what you couldn't finish. or at least our waitress was nice enough to let us do so lol.
the potato salad was really good! its different from the usual potato salads i've had. it had onions in it and i felt it wasn't as mayo-based as some other potato salads. which is good bc i don't like mayo. i wasn't a fan of the other sides though.
out of the 3 meats offered in the all you can eat, my favorite was the brisket. we asked for an in between cut (not too lean but not too fatty) and i thought it was just right! so good! the ribs with the bones were much better than the pieces of ribs without the hard bone in it. nevertheless, i did feel the ribs at franklin's were a bit tastier and more tender (however, this tastiness is negated by the ridiculous wait at franklin's). the sausage was good, but not stellar.
they have two sauces on their tables. one is their original bbq. and the other is their habanero sauce which i preferred bc it had more of a kick to it.
we also tried their pecan pie ($4.95) with a scoop of ice cream ($1) which was good but not great. goode co's pecan pie is much better.
all in all, the service is good. the bbq is amazing. loved that we came at a time we didn't have to wait. highly recommend. i'm definitely a proud texan =)
You CANNOT say that you've visited Austin if you didn't stop by this place. The food is absolutely amazing. The waiters know it's amazing and it shows in their stellar service. The cooks know it's amazing and it shows in their...well, amazing cooking. The firepit is something to definitely take a picture of as well. The decor really sets the Texas scene as you're about to down pounds of delicious food.
So basically I'll tell y'all to ignore everything on the menu and just get the all you can eat deal for 20 dollars. Seriously. It's SUCH an amazing deal and I only wish my stomach was larger so that I could've had more food because the brisket, sausage, everything you get from it is just fantastic. After you're done eating however, you won't wanna come back until another one or two weeks. It fills you up THAT well.
Please do yourself a huge favor and come here, I promise you won't regret it.
The Salt Lick is fantastic - what else is there to say?? There's so much to love here:
GREAT BBQ (the brisket and pork ribs are amazing)
Great Service
BYOB
Casual environment
It is a bit of a drive from Austin, but, totally worth it if you have friends visiting from out of town and want to show them a good time. Â If you bring your own beer, but, not in a cooler, they will promptly give you a bucket of ice to keep them cold while you eat.
Make sure to come hungry - because you get a LOT of food
The only reason I'm giving the Salt Lick 4 stars instead of 5 is because I went to Franklin BBQ the day after I went to the Salt Lick, and the brisket there blew me away. If I hadn't been able to compare the two one day after another, I probably would have given 5 stars to the Salt Lick too.
The appeal of the Salt Lick is the atmosphere. You are in the middle of Texas hill country, waiting outside with your own adult beverages, enjoying . We only waited for 45 minutes on a Friday night because we showed up before 5pm (45 minutes is nothing! People wait in line for crap at the Cheesecake Factory longer than that). The crowd waiting when we came out after finished dinner was much larger. The atmosphere itself is enough to make me want to visit again.
Food at the Salt Lick is a deal....$20 for all you can eat? Can't beat that. The brisket and pork ribs were good, but not as good as Franklin BBQ. I will say that I enjoyed the sausage at the Salt Lick more though. I used the BBQ sauce they had on the table....its more of an orange color and is more watery rather than thick. I didn't mind the flavor, but I've heard some people aren't fans of the sauce because it tends to be more Carolina style. They will keep bringing you plates of meat as long as you keep asking for it. I think my husband had about 3 plates of brisket and pork ribs. He definitely overdosed on meat and basically passed out when we got back that night.
My cousin and her bf who live in Austin came with us because we were visiting, but they are both vegetarians. This is not a place for vegetarians, but they were nice enough to just hang out with us. Salt Lick has a vegetarian plate which consists of beans, cole slaw and potato salad...unfortunately we found out the beans are cooked in pork marrow, so they couldn't eat those either. I think they were hoping for other sides like mac n cheese or something. But they got a big slice of pecan pie with ice cream, and that was delicious.
Overall, a great place to visit. Come early or be prepared to wait a while! Not that that's a bad thing, as long as you bring  plenty of your own drinks!
Only 1,500 five-star reviews? Â Geez, I better write another.
I guess I first ate at Salt Lick six years ago. Â And I probably gave it 4 stars then. Â And looking back, I think it's because I made the mistake of eating family style (all you can eat). Â Because any time you eat all-you-can-eat, you feel "meh" afterward. Â So how was Salt Lick? Â Meh.
But in reality, it's damn good, and it's actually improved over the years. Â The most noticeable improvements have been to the venue itself, which now features a lovely outdoor music venue and wine bar. Â It's got a terrific atmosphere, and everyone comes out to Driftwood to enjoy great barbecue and have a good time. Â Last time, we were surrounded by a friendly group of homies with a cooler and an iced beer bucket that was chilling a 1.75L of brown liquor. Â Why the heck not?
And when you can get a great plate of barbecue for under $15 and enjoy your favorite beer from a cooler, while you wait and while you eat, in a great atmosphere, why the heck would you not love the Salt Lick. Â Hence the 15,000 5-star reviews.
Dang good barbecue, awesome potato salad, barbecue sauce so addictive I truly consider stealing the bottles from the table every time, but never do, and even that white bread has grown on me. Â And again, this is not news to anyone (I realize this, because I've seen the 150,000 5-star reviews.)
The only problem with Salt Lick, truly, is my not having the 6k calorie/day metabolism it would take to eat here regularly and not get spectacularly fat. Â Which is an unfortunate, and regrettable, limitation.
The Salt Lick is good, but I think it's highly overrated. I would never wait for this place more than 30-40 minutes, and usually only wait that long when I am with other people. It is BYOB, which is nice so you can drink your wait away! The BBQ is a little watery. The brisket is on point though. The sides leave something to be desired but no one comes to a BBQ place for the sides.
Review Source:BYOB or BYOW...delicious bbq & bbq sauce!! Â Awesome atmosphere . . . so nice to listen to live music and drink your beverage of choice while sitting under the shade of beautiful oak trees and listening to live music all the while smelling that wonder BBQ to build up your appetite and anticipation!!
Review Source:Hot summer day, BYOB, and BBQ...it doesn't get too much better! Prior to this trip I had only been to the Round Rock location and loved it so I figured I couldn't go wrong with the original.
This location isn't too far outside of Austin and well worth it. We got there pretty early in the day and there was about a half hour wait. As we were being seated the wait had increased to over an hour.
While you wait there is a nice outside area with picnic tables where you can partake in the drinks that you brought as well as a wine cellar place next door and a lemonade stand on property. Or you can just enjoy the company of your group.
The BBQ here never disappoints. I had the plate that offers brisket, ribs, and sausage. It never disappoints. They give you bread as well which is also very delicious.
If anyone comes to town to visit me this place will be on the list!
This place is terrific. Â Party of 7; we all got the family style meal. Pork ribs were amazing, as was the sausage. Â The brisket was a bit hit-or-miss, but as a fan of the burnt ends, I enjoyed it thoroughly. Â The rest of the brisket was good with the delicious sauce, but on its own it's a tad dry. Â We also got one order of the beef ribs, and they were outstanding as well.
As for the sides, the slaw was great, the potatoes were solid but not spectacular. Â Pickles, bread, and raw onions available on request, and they were all fine.
Excellent service; waiter came by frequently asking if we wanted more food, and refilling our drinks quickly.
Ordered a few desserts for tasting --- blackberry pie with ice cream was definitely the winner.
Um, no! this was my second time trying out salt licks but first time at this location. I didnt like their round rock location and I expected more from this one since the wait was an hour long.
I got a brisket and sausage plate and the best part was the sausage....that is not good bbq if the sausage stands out. Brisket was super dry!!! the sides were okay....nothing to rave about. If this is Bobby Flay's best bbq he's ever had, I like to challenge him to taste mine!!!! lol this place makes me look like I can cook good!!!! way overrated imo.
Over 1400 Yelp reviews and nearly a 5 star average! What more can I add?!
I will say that the family style is the best deal going. For around $20, you get all the pork ribs, brisket, sausage, bread, beans, and slaw, you can shove down your gullet.
The staff was very attentive and refilled our plates and glasses whenever we got a bit low. The pecan  pie kicks some serious booty too although I did not have it on this occasion - too full.
My only negative point is the brisket. We kept being served lean brisket and it was terrible. It was tough, tasteless, and dry. I should have made a special request for some moist. My fault.
If you're in the area, The Salt Lick is well worth the drive!
So I'll start by saying I'm not a big BBQ fan, but I couldn't resist checking this place out after hearing so much about it from friends and even in the press. Â It was quite a hike from downtown Austin, where I was staying, but it definitely was worth it. Â
Be prepared to bring your cash as they do not take plastic. Â My group and I did the all you can eat meal, where you will never be in short supply of anything your heart desires. Â The brisket was amazing and the highlight of the meal. Â The wait staff is all over the place working the dining room, but does a nice job of making sure you don't go without service for too long. Â It's no wonder this place is as famous as it is and the lines are never short to get in!
The Brisket is to die for and the ribs are pretty great too!!!!
I have to admit that it is probably the best BBQ I have ever had.
The place is enormous and their is live country music played in the outdoor
courtyard. When you first walk into the building you are overwhelmed
with the most wonderful smell of hickory smoke and meat being
carmelized on the open wood fired pits. The winery and its tasting room are
a nice addition to the Texas BBQ experience.
It IS all that!!!! Â Some key points:
* If it is your first time, get the family style all you can eat. Â You dont HAVE to eat the things you don't like, so focus on the great things like the brisket, ribs, slaw, etc. Â I'm not a fan of their potatoes or beans, so I just totally ignore them and eat BRISKET!
* Kids under 4 eat FREE... this is awesome if you have a big family.
* The desserts are incredible. Â The pecan pie is the best I've ever had... you must get it a la mode.
* Have them fill up your brisket plate right before your finish so you have leftovers :) Â ENJOY!
What I liked most about this place was the wine tasting room. For $5 you can taste five of their 10+ wines; white, red, rose and dessert. And for $5-10ish you can take a glass over to your dinner table. I took the BBQ red and it paired nicely because it, like many of the reds from the winery, is pretty light. They also serve to-go beer, I think the cheapest was $10 for a 6-pack. Not bad!
The BBQ of course was great too, really awesome homemade sauces. We got the Family Style which is all-you-can eat beef brisket, sausage, pork ribs, potato salad, cole slaw and beans with sides of bread, pickles and onions on request. They're pickles are awesome!
The grounds are really pretty with lots of patio seating. Definitely makes for a lovely dining event with friends and family.
Brisket was superb, turkey was delicious!! Sides were so-so. BBQ sauce seemed to have a Dijon mustard-base which was a first and was yummy. The pecan pie was pretty darn good! The atmosphere makes up for the so-so sides and service.
Tips:
We went Sunday night around 6:30pm and the wait was under 10 minutes!
BYOB (People even brought along coolers with their fav adult beverages. You can purchase wine and beer in the wine tasting shop next to the restaurant...)
**CASH ONLY**
The first time I came here, it was hard to find parking and there was a long wait. There was live music and fresh squeezed lemonade and popcorn for sale. It's also BYOB so other people brought coolers and drank while they waited. Our whole table ordered the unlimited sausage, brisket, ribs, beans, potato salad, bread, and cole slaw for $20 per person. I would highly recommend this if it's your first time here so you can try everything. I normally don't like barbecue sauce but I loved the barbecue sauce here! The bread was super soft and all of the meats were delicious! The only downside to getting the unlimited meal is that you can't take home leftovers.
The second time I came here, it was easy to find parking and there was only a 20 minute wait. We came on a Saturday at 6. I wasn't hungry at all so I just ordered the Peach Cobbler and had some of the plate my sister ordered. The plates are around $15 and you can share and take home leftovers. The Peach Cobbler was ok and super large for $5. Mitch, our waiter, was great and made our friend's birthday celebration really special! It's cash only and there are no split checks. There's an ATM outside if you need cash.
My colleagues took me out to the Salt Lick during one of my business trips to Austin, and it lived up to the hype. Although I don't eat pork (which means that I was unable to have the sausage or pork ribs), the brisket and the beef ribs were deeeeeeeelicious. I also like their cole slaw which fortunately is not drenched in mayo.
Tip: Get the "marbled" brisket, not the lean variety. It's much better.
Tip: If you get the beef ribs, get the double (2 ribs) and make sure you get one center cut and one end cut. Different tastes, but both excellent.
The only downer is that their "hot" bbq sauce isn't hot. It's mildly spicy. Then again, the meat is so good, you don't need to use too much.
Con: It's cash-only, but they do have an on-site ATM.
One of my favorite places to visit when I am in town. The wait can be rather long but so what? More time to socialize with friends and family over wine which can be purchased in the adjacent building to the main restaurant. Not in the mood for wine? They also offer beer... or just bring your own!
When it is time to sit and eat I often order a sampler plate because I have to have a little bit of everything. No complaints, I love it all! After a filling meal try one of their desserts. I usually grab a pecan pie to go. YUM!
Great BBQ! It's a long drive from Austin, but man it's totally worth it for the unlimited option... them ribs, sausages, potato salad, bread, yummm.
I just have to say that I still think Rudy's brisket (extra moist) is slightly superior. But that's only for the brisket, I come to Salt Lick for everything else!
They also have some amazing sweet potato fries that are NOT on the menu -- just order it!
All I can say, is that the Salt Lick definitely lived up to the hype.
First of all, the property itself is just massive (Texas-sized?) and awesome. It's beautifully positioned at the edge of Hill Country and well kept, creating an awesome ranch vibe for us tourists.
Obviously though, you come to this place for the Legendary BBQ and I think it was well worth the 20 minute drive off the freeway--not to mention the flight from Minneapolis and drive to Austin.
Admittedly, I'm a Texas BBQ novice, but it's going to be really tough to beat the Brisket I experienced here. Per the recommendation of our friendly waiter, I tried some of the 'bark' pieces of the brisket and I savored every last bite. The sausage too, was just fantastic. Grilled and smoked to pure perfection so beautiful it made me realize that good BBQ is an art.
I didn't find the pork ribs to be as amazing as the rest of the meat. I'm a huge ribs fan and was prepared for some super-tender BBQ, but ribs at the Salt Lick were drier than I would have guessed. Maybe I'm missing something and should be asking for a different part of the ribs. If that's the case send me a message.
I was also unimpressed by the sides. I had the coleslaw and beans. Neither was that great.
Regardless, the rest of the meat more than made up for the disappointment in the ribs and sides.
As far as ambiance, this place is great. I would love to get a group of friends together and spend the evening out here, and hopefully I can live in Texas someday to make that happen. Being within driving distance of this place would be a hell of an amenity.
The hospitality by the manager (I think his name was Lee) was also much appreciated. He saw my wife and I taking pictures of the pit, and he offered to take our photos. To help make it more memorable for us he had the chef fork a slab of ribs and let us hold it in our photo. Yes it was touristy and a half but it's a great photo!
I'd love to hear from true Texas BBQ folks that have recommendations for us to check out next time (hopefully soon)!
Truth... best I've had. I dream about it. If it was a little closer than 1710 miles from my house, I'd probably eat there constantly.
Being an outsider...a Californian....(go ahead, think what you want), I have visions of what other places are like - like the Lone Star State. I really like what I've seen of Texas. In the 90's, I visited Round Rock, Austin, San Antonio, Dallas, and tried some steak houses and chain restaurants that cover the nation. While it was all fine and dandy, it never fit the image that I first formed in my head years ago.
Finally, The Salt Lick met and exceeded my expectations. Bigger in Texas? It is! On some 2 lane road for a few miles and BAM! There it is. It's a parking lot for a county fair? A concert? What? It's for BIG TEXAS BARBECUE? Â Believe it. It's like a big ol' group of strangers were invited to a huge picnic for some of the best BBQ you can imagine. We all have personal tastes, but seems like everyone will love this. I loved everything they served! Big group tables are plentiful, so bring some friends! Â I could go on, but I'm gonna write my short list.
Expect to wait.
Expect lots of other people to wait with you.
Plan on enjoying the atmosphere. Families talking, laughing, maybe some live music.
Drink selection is not extensive, so consider bringing what you want.
Get the brisket.
Be sure to get brisket.
Before you leave, try some brisket.
All of the food is good, so try it. Don't forget the brisket!
Hands down best BBQ I've ever had. Â This place is amazing and the only restaurant where you really want to have at least an hour wait before you get seated. Â Thankfully for this Chicagoan, the night we decided to come here it was a nice mild night. Â It's BYOB so we stopped at on the way to pick up some local growlers full of craft beer. Â We had about an hour and 20 minute wait that flew by. Â We had such a good time socializing not only with our own group but with other patrons hanging out waiting for their tables while listening to the live music.
Once we got seated, my husband and I didn't want to mess around so we ordered the Rancher platter which is a sampler of ribs, turkey, brisket, sausage, potato salad, and cole slaw. Â My absolute favorite were the ribs - I think I'll be dreaming about these until I have a chance to get back here again!
This was an overnight trip to Austin (Tx) for Barbeque. After asking our Hotel concierge for a suggestion for good BBQ; but we decided to go with our first choice.
We heard we could bring our own drinks, so we stopped at a Minimart. I decided on Local Texas beer.
As we arrived, the parking lot was full. We put in our name for the 45 minute wait, so we cracked open a beer. Another a group were taking shots of tequilla. A clear and sunny day, entertainment, and a ice cold beer, us guys were in heaven.
We chose the Family Style  'All you can eat' which included Brisket, Sausage, pork ribs, cole slaw, potato salad and beans. After the third round of meats, we called it quits.
Good food and good times. BTW, you can purchase beer and wine on the premises, but not from your server.
It is an absolute must to eat some bangin' BBQ if you're in Austin, TX. Thus, my BF and I did as we should and drove all the way to the middle of nowhere to eat at The Salt Lick BBQ. As soon as we parked, we were greeted immediately by the savory smell of juicy, mouth-watering meat. We were seated immediately and welcomed by a friendly waitress.
I ordered the Combo Plate - Brisket and pork ribs. My BF ordered the Thurmans Choice, which came with brisket, pork ribs, sausage. I thought the brisket was bland and really dry, but the pork ribs were out of this world! Probably the best pork ribs I have ever eaten in my entire existence. They will forever be ingrained in my mind. I stole some of my BF's sausage (Hehe) and it was pretty good too.
Great place for some succulent Texas BBQ and would be happy to come back again!
Have I told you about my newly found love affair with Texas? He's big, charming, polite, full of cool stories, a little bit of a rebel, and knows how to cook BBQ better than anyone I know.
Should I admit that eating here was one of my must-do things on the list, even though it was 220 miles away from where I was staying? Well, that depends on if it was worth the 7 hour round trip.
Answer: Yes.
We stopped by a 7-Eleven in Austin to get ice & beer. If you are heading in from Austin, we saw a store on the way at the intersection of 45 & RM 1826. From 45, it's about a 10 mile drive (gorgeous countryside) and then you will descend upon the great lakes of full parking lots. There is no missing it.
Drop off someone to put your name in and then find a spot. Unload the cooler and have a seat near the beer & wine tasting room, or by the stage if you can find a spot. There is some great people watching (and eavesdropping) here. I observed: three tipsy guys trying to play bocce ball, one chick repeatedly bending over in a dress that was way too tight (and short), two kids throwing rocks at each other, a family playing cards, two guys arguing about how sober they were (at least I think that's what they were slurring), and one kid that refused to get up from sitting/crying on his father's shoe. If you forget your beer, they sell iced buckets of 5 bottles.
The next thing I knew, our name was being called. I felt kind of bad because we had a huge table to ourselves. The waitress let us borrow her corkscrew for the bottle of wine we brought (No corkage fee - no way does this happen in CA).
Dear goodness, I ordered the brisket. This was unlike any other brisket I have had in my life. It's difficult to describe. I don't know how they do it so consistently. Can every plate have a pile of perfectly smoked, seasoned, high quality beef cooked to perfection? Â I guess it can. I guess that's why people drive 200+ miles and wait over an hour and a half to experience it. Â The side dishes were equally as delicious, although not the star of the plate.
I took a quick picture in front of the open pit & cried all the way home. I miss you Salt Lick! I gladly dedicate my 500th review and tip my cowgirl hat, to you.
I'll preface this review by saying that there was a lot of hype thrown at me before actually making the drive from Austin to Driftwood, TX.
I heard the stories about how everyone on the Food Network loved this place, how the atmosphere was second to none, and how you were allowed to bring your own beer. Â But how does it really stack up when you leave the hype at the door? Â Pretty well actually.
Our group went on a Wednesday night and luckily we didn't have to wait for a table. Â Our waitress was very nice and attentive. Â We all got the family style meal, which is $20 all-you-can-eat (great deal). Â That comes with all the ribs, brisket, sausage, potatoes, bread, and beans you can stuff in your big fat face. Â We got our money's worth. Â The brisket was insane and the ribs melted off the bone. Â They give you two of their signature sauces to choose from, one with habanero and one regular. Â I was particular to the habanero, but don't worry, it's not too hot.
Salt Lick is a must visit if you're in Austin and want an authentic Texas BBQ experience. Â Keep in mind that even though they have one at the airport, it's not the same. Â If you can, take the 40 min drive to Driftwood and eat the best stuff they have to offer on a Texas ranch/winery. Â Bring some Shiner beer as well. Â Keep in mind...it's cash only.
There's something about BYOB and good barbeque that does the place justice. E and I came here at 5pm and had to wait 45 minutes. Not a bad wait considering others have waited 2-3 hours at times. We used that time to go to the cellars where I did a $5 tasting of 5 wines (pretty good deal). However, for those who do wait, they bring plenty of booze to keep them entertained. Be careful of how much you drink because the cops are lurking around waiting to catch any drunkards.
We saw a lot of folks order the combo plate ( a combination of meat and vegetable plate). We decided to do family style and focus primarily on the meat. We ordered the double beef ribs, pork ribs, and brisket. Our favorite was the pork ribs (fall of the bone and moist). The double beef ribs was our next favorite was the same fall of the bone goodness but not as much packed flavor like the pork ribs. The brisket surprisingly was our least favorite and that was because some of the pieces were rather dry.
For two people, 1.5 lbs of meat is good enough. Don't pull a us and order 2lbs of meat and started getting meat sweats. All for $48 bucks was a steal compared to the barbeque we typically get in NYC. Thank you Salt Lick BBQ.
Just kidding! The brisket appears to be as hit-or-miss as the ribs. The last time I got brisket, it was kind of tough and a little dry. Grr. Granted, a miss on the brisket isn't the epic fail that a miss on the ribs is, but come ON. Consistency is what makes or breaks a good restaurant, and the Salt Lick doesn't have any to speak of.
Well, unless you get sausage.
I guess I'll stick to the sausage.
The sausage is really the only thing keeping it from 2 stars. It's too good for a 2-star review, as is most of the food, to be honest. The rest of the meats just aren't...good. It's just edible.
Something else I forgot to mention in my earlier review: the potato salad. I didn't realize that was potato salad when we did the all-you-can-eat because it just looks like mashed potatoes, and tastes like mashed potatoes, too. BOO. I like potato salad, and this is not it. This is just...potato.
Another disappointment: no, they won't do all-you-can-eat service if you want to sit on the patio. It was just too nice to be indoors, and we didn't see a patio space in their actual seating area, so we got take out. That was okay and the food came out extremely quick, but let's be honest--you're here for the gluttony and the scenery, and that totally takes the former out of the equation.
THIS PLACE IS HANDS DOWN THE BEST BBQ I HAVE EVER HAD!!! Â
I crave this place when I leave TX to come back home. Â
Everything is amazing!!!! Â
BYOB is also awesome. Â You feel like you are not going to a restaurant and this place is hidden. Â I was not expecting that type of food in such a rural area (outside of Austin). Â We fly into Austin and always manage to go to Salt Lick in Driftwood :) Â
This is the place to go! Â Can't wait to go back every time. Â
PS I order a ton of the Salt Lick BBQ sauces/seasoning (either there or at the Austin airport) to take back home with me to season our food. Great on everything! Â
You can also order the food/seasoning online (little more costly, but if you have never tried it, well worth it! Â Briskets...yummm!) - they ship pretty much anywhere I think.
Great for an impressive dinner for that special someone or party?!
5/17/13 12:00PM - A 5 star experience but 3 star barbecue. Â This is a great Texas barbecue excursion. Â Get a group of friends, get a cooler of Shiner, block out four hours and have the Texas time of your life. Â Every Texan needs to go at least once in their life. Â A great venue to hang out waiting for your table. Â Family style BBQ is great for groups.
I scored Salt Lick 81 out of 100. Â This is Regional Texas BBQ.
Smoke: Â Oak. Â Cowboy style pit. Â They cook and mop directly over the coals.
Brisket: Â Good. Â A 1/4in smoke ring. Â Soft black bark. Â Tough of tender hurt the score. Â I had to use the knife. Â Good smoke and the sauce mop added a nice subtle sweetness. Â No sauce needed.
Ribs: Â Very Good. Â Small spare ribs. Â Tender soft bite, clean bone and a little tearing at the ends. Â Sweeten with same sauce mop. Â Good smoke and good flavor. Â No sauce needed.
Sausage: Â Good. Â A pork/beef fine ground with mild traditional spice and little after taste. Â A little greasy. Â Use the sauce.
Sauce: Â Good. Â No tomatoes in this sauce. Â Its like a tangy smokey honey mustard. Â Its different but good.
