This is a good family owned Mexican restaurant. Very consistent and always good. Cheese enchiladas are great for children, not too spicy. If you want something special try the Sammy's Special. One enchilada, rice and beans and a chili relleno to top it off. The Relleno can be very spicy so beware if you're a light weight. Service is always prompt and friendly. A great community restaurant.
Review Source:The food is great, but the service leaves a lot to be desired!
We live in La Vernia and have recently utilized (what we thought) was Sammy's convenient drive thru. We had eaten inside before and the service was wonderful, but they definitely need to replace thier current drive thru attendant. Our first experience with the driv thru we had ordered a bean burrito with rice and various other dishes (a family of four). When I arrived for pick up, the attendant asked if I wanted the burrito "how it came" - I replied, " I am not sure, how does it come?" Her answer was, "I have no idea, I don't eat them." Really? I am thinking that is part of your job! I was speechless and just to get out of there before I said what I really wanted to!
So a couple of weeks later I tried the drive thru again hoping for a different person this time, but with no luck! This time she didn't even bother to speak to us, but simply opened the window while on her cell phone, threw her hand out for my money and shut the window (still on the phone). Came back to the window with the food, still on the phone, and shoved it at us. No words were exchanged between us, except when I pulled up and as a reply to her stare, gave her my call in order name!
I suggest this restaurant replace this worker with someone who fits the rest of the Sammy's staff that the "regular" patrons of this place have come to expect!
The good, the bad and the ugly. Service was excellent. Attentive and friendly. The chips were hard and the salsa had nothing to recommend it. The main course, had the #5 and 36 specials, were Ok. The bad....stopped in for a late lunch at 4 PM. Apparently they are a after school hangout for teenagers. That coupled with the tile floors and partially tiled walls made the place very, very noisy. Avoid them at this time if you can. Â Overall better Mexian resturants are around.
Review Source:I follow a few food blogs. Â The great Robb Walsh posted a few month's ago about how good the puffy tacos were at Sammy's in La Vernia.
An alarm went off in my head...What was Robb Walsh doing in La Vernia and how had he heard of Sammy's. Â After all he is from Houston, famous cookbook author, Texas culinary historian and the lead restaurant critic for the Houston Press! Â How in the heck had he heard about this place and it had not been reviewed on Yelp? Â
So I decided on my next trip near La Vernia I was going to check it out for myself. Â Boy was I glad I did! Â After locating the place the sign says this is Sammy's #2. Â Where is #1 located? Â Oh well this is where the great Robb Walsh came I had to try it.
Clean and neat on the inside that you seat yourself. Â Chips and salsa arrived quickly along with sweet tea. Â The chips and hot sauce are amazing, perfectly crispy and not greasy. Â Sweet tea was tasty and cool. Â Looking over the menu I came upon the combination plates either 2 puffy tacos and 2 enchiladas $4.99 or 3 & 3 for $6.95. Â Being hungry I went for the 3 & 3. Â A few minutes later 2 large plates of food arrived. Â First, the puffy tacos very good but they quickly got soggy. Â The surprise of the meal were the cheese enchiladas which were very spicy, cheesy, & scrumptious.
The enchiladas stole the show.
Next time you get out highway 87 stop in for some enchiladas and puffy tacos. Â You will leave full and satisfied! Â Maybe you can even find where Sammy's #1 is.
