San Carlos Cafe

I didn't want to but I reluctantly ordered a salad. Spending time in low populated small towns, I was extremely skeptical about how exciting a salad could be in the middle of nowhere. It didn't help that at a different cafe in the next town over, I ate the most plain, boring salad ever in my salad eating career. But sadly, salad is about the only thing this vegan-gal can eat when options are slim. Thinking that the salad wouldn't fill me up, I also ordered a plate of curly fries.

A few of my colleagues were already fans of this place. They've frequented San Carlos Cafe in previous years visiting the Apache reservation. As I waited for my food, I looked around at the awesome artwork on the walls. It's like skater art meets Apache culture. I took a photo of one of my favorite pieces but I don't wanna post it online without permission. But for those of you that know me, I'll gladly show it to you one day.

One of our colleagues was meeting a gentleman for lunch who we shook hands with as soon as we entered the cafe. He invited us to join him at his table. I later found out that this man was Douglas Miles, the Apache artist who created the artwork on the walls that I've been admiring! Cool :)

When our food came out, I was actually quite impressed. My salad had green lettuce, tomatoes, red onions, olives, and croutons. Rather than a creamy dressing, they offered a house-made salsa which was delicious. As for the curly fries, well, you can never go wrong with curly fries and these ones really hit the spot.

The real seller for this place is the desserts. Even though I didn't partake in any of them, my colleagues jumped at every opportunity to grab a piece of homemade brownies or carrot cake with slices the size of your head for only $2. No wonder they love this place!
