Yuck, cigarette smoke rules in this dive with questionable fare. Â Ordered the steamed clams, and broke a tooth on the second bite, followed by more errant shells later on. Â Could not eat them and found out they were frozen clams WITH PLENTY OF SAND, hence the name of the place, I guess. Â Horrible, and then got food poisoning from their world famous fish tacos. Â Much too much local color and SMOKE. Â Only go if you're already drunk!
Review Source:Good for:
* live music
* hurricane dares: "I'll see your category 3 and raise you a category 5!"
* quick, decent food (except for wildly overrated fish tacos...see below)
* crab legs
* free frisbee with kid's meal
Not so good for:
* fish tacos -- they were cold, overcooked, and tasted something like styrofoam packing peanuts. I had the baja taco option; maybe blackened is better?
* Dinner with your grandma unless your grandma is into very loud music and shouting
This joint  is very close to Port Canaveral, so when I disembarked my cruise ship, I made this place a stop after going to Ron John's Surf Shop to pick up some new shades.
The burrito was enormous and tasted pretty yummy, too, although I wouldn't recommend adding the queso. The lady at the table next to me seemed extremely excited about her fish tacos, but the serving size looked small to this old goat.
The indoor/outdoor seating area is a plus.
The service is adequate, but not stellar (never stellar).
The spicy bloody mary served to wash down the meal well, but I found it hard to believe a Sports Grill and Bar didn't have ginger ale.
In the end, I left with a smile on my face and took a picture in the parking lot.
Sam a Goat loves cruises. And this place wasn't bad either.
Known for fish tacos and being a great dive bar.
Are you looking for a classic dive bar in Cocoa Beach? Look no further. With indoor and outdoor seating you can embrace or avoid the sun as you choose. It's a great place to watch the game on Sunday. They have all the games, but of course the Dolphins will be on audio if they are playing. We tried the fish tacos (thumbs up! the reviews are true!), chicken tacos, smoked fish dip (a local speciality which we lucked into due to an order mix up) and the queso dip. All fulfilled the bar food requirements. Prices are very reasonable and the people watching is fun - not too touristy. Their Newcastle beer felt a bit overpriced, but let's face it - there are plenty of inexpensive domestic beer specials to choose from instead. Cold beer, good food, game on... Do not forget to try the fish tacos - great taste and value at a great price.
This is a pretty decent bar and grill right on the beach. Â The beer selection is ok, but it's nothing to write home about. Â They do serve the beer in plastic cups, so once you understand it's that kind of place, you will not be disappointed. Â The food was ok. Â But our server was good, she was really working her backside off. Â Good job. Â
As others have mentioned, they usually have a band there and it's just too dang loud to have a conversation while the band is playing. Â It's a pretty neat hangout otherwise. Â
Will I be back? Â Sure, sometime.
My family dined here on a slightly chilly November afternoon (by Florida standards); we sat outside and it was a bit uncomfortable; not the fault of the restaurant, but we decided to brave the elements because our kids wanted to sit outside near the beach.
The food was decent, but certainly nothing to write home about. We had nachos that were unremarkable and sandwiches that were decent. The service was very friendly and prompt.
Great option for watching football. The food is good, wait staff attentive and not a bad seat in the house. The only downside is they have a live band blast music toward the end of the 1:00 games. Went from talking football with table mates to reaching for earplugs. Easily 5 stars without the loud music overpowering the enjoyment of watching the games. Ended up leaving and watching the rest at the hotel.
Review Source:Our server was stellar, friendly & efficient, a real pro.
But this is one of those places where if you have enough to drink, you'll think the food surpasses your average bar grub. I didn't, and it doesn't. Typical iceberg lettuce & shredded cheese deal. There was a lot of it, but no love in it. I had a way better fish taco at Yellow House.
The live music is so loud for the size of the place, everyone in your group goes hoarse from yelling to one another. You definitely feel like you're "somewhere." So go there with people you don't know well, for a more drink less talk outing.
The open air vibe is nice, until someone lights up & smoke wafts back into the bar. Here's a tip - sit where the outside starts for 2nd-hand smoke & save money on cigs. There, don't say I never gave you nothing.
Some of the best fish tacos Ive ever had. I ordered 3 (One of each kind they had) and they were pretty amazing. The blackened being the the best then the grilled were my favorites but I still enjoyed the battered and fried version. The fish they use is Mahi mahi which makes it a meatier bite than if they were to use just white fish like ive seen in many places that serve this meal.
I didnt really like the rice and beans but after 3 fish tacos your so full you dont care about the sides anyways.
Overall, the food was great, the drinks were cheap and the wait staff was fantastic.
Been here quite a few times - here's the simple rundown:
Good fish tacos (I prefer the fish ones in either Blackened or Grilled) - it's why I come back.
Average, but PLENTIFUL, nachos (the chicken has next to no flavoring).
The wings are good and a decent size.
Can get busy so be prepared to wait or keep on traveling.
Seating is a pain - you just have to wander and wish upon a star sometimes. Â Then you have to catch the eye of the waitress taking care of your newfound section.
Bands are too loud for such a small place and any kind of conversation. Â On the other hand, there are bands here almost every night so if you're married...and you don't really want to talk to your spouse...this might be your place!
Close to the beach.
Smoking area is adjacent to the outside seating area and the ocean breeze can carry it right back at you.
this place supposedly prides itself on being a step above other bars as far as food is concerned. not...
right off the bat the server had a crappy attitude. she pushed booze and when we didn't immediately bite her attitude started sucking. we ordered fish and chips and a side of onion rings. the onion rings were a bit on the tough side. the fish was clearly frozen as it had a freezer taste to it. the fries... hohum
we called the waitress over about the fish and she just said "i'll take it off" and yanked the plates from my GF. i'm a bit more tolerant and frozen fish as i ate plenty as a kid so i kept my meal. the waitress still sucked.
my suggestion, go elsewhere.
Ok this place is great for beers and the location is great. BUT! I ordered the Fish and Chips and I was not happy. First off my fish was over cooked to black, and the fries were not fresh. I tried the fish and I was not convince this was fresh Mahi it tasted like frozen fish over cooked and so I decided not to eat it. The waitress came by and I told her I was not happy with the taste or smell. She was very polite and understanding and offered me something else. So I said ok I will try the famous Fish Taco and she told me it was the same fish. So I decided on nothing and she was very nice and comped my food. The onion rings were good.
I totally recommend the place on Sunday they have $1 drafts and onion rings.
Yes, I decided to star in my own episode of Woman Vs. Food ...and WON! Â
So, after a couple of category 5 hurricanes (the ones with a floated shot of 151), I decide to take on the 5lb burrito challenge.
I now have the pleasure of being the 2nd woman to have completed the challenge successfully. My only complaint thought you only paid for the burrito if you DIDN'T finish it. Not the case, but hey, it was a fun time anyway.
Good food, live music and great atmosphere.
One of my favorite sportsbar next to Cocoa Beach that actually promote hurricanes (the drink that is!)
If you are ever in the mood to watch a game or kick it back with a couple of margaritas next to the beach then roll over here. They have free parking, fish tacos, beer pong, and interesting funny decor to laugh at. This is quite the entertaining beach bar worth driving to if you are in the mood to take a couple hrs of vacation down in the Cocoa area.
I was on a cruise in January which stopped in Cape Canaveral. Â We took a bus to Cocoa Beach but the weather was lousy so we were told by some people on the beach we should hit up the Sand Bar because they have $1 margarita specials on Mondays. Â Being a huge fan of margaritas, I was in, so there we went. Â The atmosphere is a lot of fun for groups of all sizes and is great for a young crowd. Â They have a table to play beer pong and flip cup (which is what we did). Â We also ate lunch there. Â I ordered the enchilada which was great and even came with plantains!
The only reason why I did not give the full five stars for this review is because the margaritas were just juice with tequila, but I guess I should have seen that coming with a one dollar price tag. Â
If you want to have a good time and eat some good food, I highly recommend this place.
It's a Bar with outstanding Drinks, Food, Fun and an atmosphere that rivals the best out there today.
I make this a priority everytime I visit Florida on every cruise I take! Their fish tacos are amazing and my top recommendation for good grub in Florida. Everything is top notch here. I'm truly jealous of the locals here for having such a cool place to hang out every weekend. Only thing is; they've got to get Man vs. Food out there to take on there 5lb. Burrito!
One day Niki and I were invited by her friend to the beach for the day. While there I noticed a restaurant called The Sandbar nearby. After a couple hours in the sun and the sea we were getting hungry. One of our friends said the had been to The Sandbar before and that they had great baja fish tacos. Being from southern California and a former beach bum I know a thing or two about fish tacos.
We got a table for our group and quickly ordered of food and drinks. The drinks arrived quickly and our food followed shortly after. I of course ordered the baja fish tacos with rice and black beans. The dish looked great so after applying some lime and hot sauce I took the first of many tasty bites. The taco was so good and so tasty. The beans and rice were very good too. The sauce the pour over the taco did the trick and set off this dish with some fantastic favor.
They do serve alot of different food here but I come here for the tacos. Give it a go and you too will be coming back for more, time and again.
We have a visitor from out of town so, on the recommendation from a friend, we drove from East Orlando to Cocoa Beach simply to have fish tacos. I'm glad we did!
Sandbar is behind Ron Jon. It has a lot of outdoor seating and has a very beachy vibe, even thought you can't really see the beach from the bar itself. The night we went was perfect - it was raining but breezy and it felt good. There was a live musician, which made it really really loud (my only compliant) but it's a bar, so it's to be expected.
We just so happened to go on Taco Tuesday, when tacos are half-priced. I ordered one of each (grilled, spicy and fried) and wasn't disappointed. It was a lot of food for me so next time I'll order one taco with all three kinds of fish.
Service was friendly and I'll definitely be going back!
Great place. I visit every time I go to Cocoa.
It's literally on the beach. You cant see the beach because the parking lot is in the way but it has 100 percent that beach feeling you want. Half of the place is outside. You can walk into it from outside and sit in a covered area with an outdoor bar and fans outside, under an area that its in the sun and not covered or come into another area thats totally covered and away from the beach a bit. They have two bars and the decorations are great with that casual feeling and stickers and posters and signs all over the wall. I saw all ages here and Ive been twice. It can be a family place or a good place to hang out with friends or whatever. From the signs, it appears on nights it gets very adult with great drink specials and live music.
Fish tacos are a-mazing! I get them every time. So so good. Good prices too.
I was in town with 2 coworkers for one night only and this was the place recommended by the gift shop guy at our Four Points Sheraton. Thank you, gift shop guy, this place was fantastic!
We ordered Conch Fritters as appetizer and it came out looking like 4 mini crab cakes. Super delicious, especially if you use the sauce that comes with it, the hot sauce that's on the table, or both.
For my entree, I ordered a Grilled Fish Taco, a Baja Fish Taco, and a Seasoned Ground Beef Taco. With the order of 3 tacos, you get a complementary side of rice and beans. Love it.
I thought the grilled fish taco was phenomenal, the baja (fried) fish taco was less flavorful, and the beef taco kind of reminded me of Taco Bell meat (but not in a bad way). All three tacos were ginormous and tasty but I would probably get all grilled fish next time. The rice and beans were good too but I didn't have any room in my belly.
One thing to note is that this is definitely an adults-only type bar - lots of blatant flirting among slightly sunburned people of an older demographic...which was quite entertaining to watch.
Oh, they also have fantastic-tasting hurricanes so be careful...unless you want to join in on the blatant flirting or end up passed out on the beach.
Every time I've been, it's been crowded, and the service is inconsistent
The first time I went, I was part of a group of 9. Â We ordered, and received our beer pretty quickly. Â The server was pretty attentive, and made sure we had everything we needed. Â We were having a great time, and only managed to irritate one person.
The next time we went, our group had more than doubled. Â This time we had to sit in side, and pull tables together. Â The service was so slow. Â We ordered, and got our drinks really quickly, but everything else went super slow. Â We were there for 45 minutes before we got our food. Â Every time any of us wanted refills, we'd have to hunt down our server. Â After we had eaten our food, we had to wait for another hour before we got our check.
I enjoy the atmosphere, and they even had a pretty cool live band, but I would like better it if it was more consistent.
Spent the afternoon at Cocoa Beach this past weekend and this dive bar and grill happened to be close to the part of the beach we were hanging out on. First I went for some frozen drinks because it was dadgum hot outside. The rum runners were strong and tasty. While they were around $8 apiece, they were a good size and they put a nice floater of rum on top.
Later we went back to grab a bite. They brag about their fish tacos so much, I had to try them. Maybe they weren't the best I've ever had, but they were pretty darn good. If you get 3 (@ $3.75 apiece), you get either fries or rice and beans with it. My lady had the fried shrimp ($8.99), which we liked so much we put in another order. I wanted to try their shrimp poppers (jalapeno poppers w/ shrimp and cheese) but sadly they were out of them. Sandbar has a chill, laid-back atmosphere with a combination of local beach bums and tourists as patrons. They had a band of old guys playing mostly classic rock. They did a couple of Tom Petty tunes that everyone enjoyed. I would probably go back on my next trip to Cocoa...
The Sandbar was my intro to fish tacos... Â Woohoo! I've been in search of good fish tacos ever since. It's an obsession, I tell you!
I just loved sitting beachside and gobbling up their delicious tacos and drinking cold beer. I kind of wish I lived in Cocoa Beach, so I could go to the Sandbar more often.
Reggae Fridays are super-fun, with MC Longneck on the mic and a couple live reggae bands. Â Dance floor is always going off and in general it's a very fun scene.
Haven't eaten anything there, but the beer is cold and the selection better than most.
Go there on Friday night for reggae, and watch me dance like a fool!
Another "Sand Bar" ... I love this place though and I tend to stop in every time we hit Cocoa Beach. It's a dive, but it's cool enough that I continue to go back!
The fish tacos are my favorite ... they're a little pricey at $3.50/each, but they are delicious (and what the place is famous for). It's kind of weird, but the serve primarily seafood or Italian dishes. My kids love the pizza and I think the Stromboli is pretty good too.
The drinks ... are poured with a heavy hand so you def get your money worth. I love the Hurricanes, they are served in "categories" 1 through 5, with 5 being the most wicked of course ... Mmmmm.
The music is always fun and the environment is perfect for a day at the beach, after soaking up some rays, for watching the big game, or just chillin'. It's a good time! Service is hit and miss, but it's the beach for goodness sake!
We liked this place the best. Â The atmosphere has a laid back come-as-you-are surfer feel. Â They usually have some form of local band going on most nights. Â The food is great. Â I was pleasantly surprised at how good those fish tacos are. Â Try them blackened- they are the best!
The weekly specials are great. Â On Mondays order a pitcher of beer for like $10 bucks and get free nachos. Â You will see everyone here. Locals, vacationers, beach bums, of every age group and demographic. I absolutely can not wait to get back to Cocoa Beach. And this will be the first place I go to get a bite to eat.
This is the second review I have done on this place. Â The first one just disappeared.
Nothing like eating tacos...on a beach...half-in-the-bag...listening to live music...sans shoes. Â
Now, I'm not much of a warm-weather-warrior, but I enjoyed this place. Â The service was chill, the drinks were poured "generously", and the food was decent--suffice to say that I was a happy beach babe.
Rock on Sandbar--if I ever make it back to Cocoa Beach FL, you'll be seein' my white Colorado ass again.
I'm convinced every beach in Fla has a bar called the Sandbar. Â They are generally dives that serve cheap beer and heavily poured fruity drinks. Â This one is no exception.
I dig this place because the food isn't bad, not bad at all. Â The fish tacos are what they are (self-proclaimed) famous for, which come grilled, blackened or baja style (read: fried) and are just over 2 bucks a pop. Â The blackened was the best one.
It's a restaurant and a bar so that means, no smoking inside. Â Smokers congregate just outside of the outdoor eating area though, and there is an indooroutdoor bar area too for the smoking drinkers out there.
They have bands pretty regularly it seems, and a separate area with pool tables and darts. Â All in all, a fun place to go after soaking in the sun.
