Arrive early to get a table, especially on Friday or Saturday night.  We had the crab cake appetizer with mango salsa and remoulade - delicious!  My husband had the Mediterranean salad & I had the spinach side salad.  These were Huge portions and very good.  The Mediterranean had sun-dried tomatoes, capers, artichokes, Kalamata olives and a very nice dressing.  My spinach had bacon, feta cheese and hard-boiled eggs.  The dressing was excellent and the ingredients fresh.  My husband's New York strip with blue cheese and black beans and yellow rice.  The Stilton blue cheese was a generous portion and the steak was cooked perfectly.  My  Beach Party seafood platter was enormous.  The oysters were nice & I liked the shrimp but the grouper was possibly the best I have ever eaten.
Aaron, our waiter was outstanding. Â We called him the drink ninja. Â Drink refills just appeared out of nowhere. Â He was great. Â Thanks to the cooks & staff. Â We will definitely be back.
We enjoyed the food and the fun beach atmosphere. Great onion rings and crab claws! I especially appreciated great service from Carla. We came in from the beach and my mom felt a little faint from too much sun. Carla returned with a glass of orange juice for her in less than a minute. Thanks!
Review Source:Great location and atmosphere, but mediocre food. Not really that good. Had wings (they were advertised as buffalo style, but were just fried and had no sauce and came with ranch!) Also, had the shrimp and corn chowder which was rather dull and not much flavor. Also, has the blackened mahi mahi - again, a dud.
This place wasn't horrible, but it could have been better. Total bill with one beer was $67 with tip. Too much for too little.
Changing my review. Â Have been there many time and always loved it. Â This time I have to give it one star, and would give it zero if I could. Â We bought a $200 dinner plus 2 rounds of drinks. Â The band started and thought we would hang around for a few songs. Â Someone who worked there said we had to give up our table. Â I get that people were waiting for tables, but there were 4 free tables around us. Â We sat for a few more minutes and he came up again. Â I think the least they could have done is-- ask us if we would be willing to move to the bar and offer us a few drinks. We have been going here for years, but won't be back!
Review Source:This was only my second time here and I will be back. The food is very good with fair portion sizes. The price is about what you would expect from a tourist spot open to the beach so be warned it can be a little pricy. The only real down side is if you get seated in the main dinning room be prepared for the noise level of a jet engine in your ears! The band is so loud I couldn't hear my wife yelling in my ear. I suggest sitting on the deck, that way you can also watch the ocean.
Review Source:What a fun place. We sat at the bar for drinks and viewed the beach and sunset. It was spectacular. We are from Galveston-Katy area, and our side of the Gulf does not have the white sand. When we were seated the wind was kicking up so we requested some inner tables, which they were pleased to do. We had the seafood gumbo and the beach fried sea food plate. Both dishes were great. The fish, (shrimp, oysters, and grouper) was fresh and had a tasty coating with a slight kick to it. Even the hush puppies were outstanding. The 2 piece band was lively and was really enjoyable.
Review Source:I'm giving this place 4 stars for the mahi-mahi alone. I'm not familiar with different kinds of ocean fish. Back home we have catfish, bass and crappie. So on the advice of someone who is more familiar I tried the mahi-mahi. Wonderful. One of the other members of my party, who is NOT a fish eater, took a bite and pronounced it one of the best things she had ever eaten. I had it grilled.
We had three kids eating with us and all had the macaroni. Not a single one of them took more than two bites and pushed it aside. They said it was dry and bland.
There was a band playing and I loved the style music but it was very loud and hard to talk while they were on stage. Watdhing the people dancing made up for that though. I'd recommend this place.
Great place to go even with the family, BUT NEVER GO IN MARCH IF YOUR LOCAL, to many spring breakers mostly acting very rude wanting to fight yet can't even stand up their so drunk..anyway great music, live band plays on the beach a lot and excellent food with the best staff I've ever had the pleasure of being with. We go almost every weekend during summer months, lay out on the beach, listening to excellent local talent musicians..ya local ya gotta go, and bring the kids very kid friendly but remember what I said about the spring breanightmares!!!!
Review Source:real nice place. when they do the lobster festival its awesome. we love going there when we vacation at panama city beach. they have webcams online so you can go there "virtually" and bring back some good memories while you're freezing in the north !! real nice laid back beach atmosphere, all open air. i went once and had a lobster primivera that blew me away, went back the next day, couldn't get it. so sad. had I known i would have bought 3 more to bring home that day !. come in from the beach in your wet bathing suit, no shoes, no shirt, NO PROBLEM ! check out the annual sand sculpture contest too !!!!
Review Source:Great location and view. Food was mediocre. Went for lunch. Burger was tasteless, nothing special. The bun was hard and not a good bun at all. They need to get a better supplier. Service was excellent, though. Service with a smile.
Service was 5 stars, food, 2 stars.
Overpriced for most menu items. $10 for burger and fries. That was the special.
Excellent location on the beach.
THE local bar to go to. We've lived in Panama City for about 2 months now and it seems like everywhere we've been has been so touristy- in almost a tourist TRAP way. Schooners is different, we could tell almost everyone there was a local. The band was great, the drinks were great (and served in cute little take home cups), our server was great, the food was okay- it's your typical bar food it's not a world class restaurant, but the entire atmosphere was so much fun. If you're looking for a fun BAR to have drinks and dance and howl at the moon with the locals, this is the spot. Don't expect the best meal of your life, but you might have the best time of your life. And I haven't even mentioned the view... yeah it's RIGHT on the water. Gorg-eous. We will back!
Review Source:I'm feeling like a list-style review on this one.
The ambiance:
The best part. It reminded me of a Hawaii beach bar/restaurant. Beautiful view of the ocean and the beach, open windows, bench-type seating...all the good stuff.
The food:
Mediocre at best. Frozen, breaded, fried, reheated, super-salted and prepared by people that you wouldn't exactly consider foodies. Every sauce they give you comes in a plastic container with the lid and label right on top. Don't expect anything much from the food.
The booze:
I was with family, so I needed a stiff drink. The bartender 100% delivered.
The service:
4 out of 10. They were slow and a little sassy when you asked them for something additional. I do have to give the waiter credit for knowing all the answers to my mother's insane questions. I can't stand dining with that woman.
Schooner's will be there forever because it's a beach bar in a tourist town. Fresh ingredients and more attention to service would make this THE spot to eat and drink in PCB.
Came to Schooners on a last minute tip, were skeptical, but dove in. Â I had the fried shrimp, which were very good. Â My wife had the jerk chicken sandwich and got the mango salsa as an extra, she really enjoyed her sandwich. Â They need to make the salsa a standard on the sandwich as it really puts it over the top! Â Overall we really enjoyed our meal and will be back when we are in town.
Review Source:Love to go here to watch the sunset. Also love the fish tacos (we get them all over the place) and these are worth getting.
staff is great and very friendly. We go every time we are in town.
**The prices are a bit high, though (both food and beer prices). I guess they can over charge b/c of the location. They don't offer any happy hour prices as most others do.
Enjoyed this place. Â Have I had better fish? Â Yes...however, this is exactly the type of place you are looking for when at the beach.
One of the few beachfront restos/bars in the area, all outdoor...dive. Â I love dive fish shacks. Â I also love places you can walk right off the beach in your bathing suit and eat/drink.
My blackened mahi mahi was a bit salty but decent. Â Sides and everything else were standard. Â Drinks were good.
This would be a go-to spot if I frequented PCB.
We got to seat ourselves, it took a few minutes for a hostess to realize that we had sat down, which is I be expected. The waitress (Tina, was awesome) promptly came by for our drink and lunch orders. Within 2 minutes we had our drinks on the table. Â
Wings were average. On a hotness scale of 1-10, they were about at 3.
I ordered the Schooner Burger. Everything comes on the side except for cheese (if you choose to order it on the burger) they include plenty of fries and the burger is huge.
The key lime pie is absolutely wonderful. A definite must try.
I love a good dive seafood joint, and this lives up to the billing. Â Airy, wooden, right on the sand, and loud. Â Love the atmosphere.
However, the food is more "touristy" and average. Â Most options are fried, and there wasn't much creativity. Â That being said, there's a wide selection and nothing was bad. Â The key lime pie was a good end note, but whatever you do don't order the mac & cheese, which looks like a college cafeteria joke.
Also, you're going to pay a bit more for the beach location (which is fine in my book).
No reservations, and don't be surprised if the wait is an hour. Â Just grab a beer and sit on the back steps while you wait.
Schooners is very laid back with their Tommy Bahammmmaaa ambiance. Â Terrific ocean view is worth the sit down. Â It was Biker week and the place was jammed. Â When you visit a place like Schooners, one expects really great food, quite frankly we were not disappointed. Â Grouper portions could have been bettttaaa - the taste was excellent because it was cooked to perfection. Â My salad was fresh, kinda small for the price.
Everyone seemed to be having a great time. Â Wait time wasn't bad either. Music and ambiance was spot on. Â Our server was great and made up for the bartender dude with the bad attitude. Â Will revisit again, when back that way again.
The view is great. Â The food is OK. The service is not so good.
We arrived around 5:30 on a Thursday evening. Early enough to grab a table along the rail. Â It was a good idea because the place ended up being pretty packed only a half hour later.
We started with the BBQ bacon wrapped shrimp with the sauce on the side. Â It comes with "Asian slaw" that looked and tasted just like plain 'ol coleslaw to me. Â For an entree I ordered the grilled Mahi Mahi. Â All entrees come with one side. Â You can choose from several options including standards like fries or hush puppies, but they also have a few choices that are not so standard like black beans with tasso or cheese grits. Â I selected the Caesar salad. Â
When the salad arrived I had to ask for more dressing. Â There was so little dressing on the salad that I originally thought it had been left off. Â The fish was fine but I wish I had ordered blackened instead of grilled.
About the service... Â While we where here I had to ask for a glass of water 3 times. Â I finally got my water after we had finished eating. Â We ordered drinks from our waiter that took an exceptionally long time to appear. Â Our server seemed annoyed with the questions we had about the menu.
All in all it was an OK experience.
Cool spot. I ordered the soft shell crab sandwich which was amazing! It was on focaccia bread which made it even better! I loved every bite. The portion size was good and for a decent price. The location is perfect and after you eat you can take a nice walk on the white sandy beaches.
The only thing that creeped me out was the guy sitting in front of me was taking pictures of a group of girls with his camera phone... ekkkk.
We discovered this seafood joint in the PCB area during our seafood quest. Â It is a nice place located right next to the beach with a nice view, but we visited them during nighttime and were super foggy that night. Â They have many heat lamps that generate a large amount of heat, we got seated next to one of these and had to request them to turn it down. Â Despite having a bar, they are not noisy like other seafood joints with bars.
"Seafood Party" was a delightful plate of fried seafood. Â There were a bit of everything except scallops, the hush puppies were ok, but the grouper and prawns were quite tasty. Â The fish was a lot bigger than the ones I eaten at another place along the beach, and moister inside as well. Â Oysters were ok, not too dried, but not moist enough.
Schooner seems like decent seafood along the beach, I wish I had visited here during a sunny day with daylight to check out their view. Â Until next time~
A reliably good seafood restaurant can be hard to find in PCB, but Schooners fits the bill--so much so, in fact, that while here with my parents, sister, and brother-in-law for a long Mother's Day weekend, we ate here twice.
I have a special place in my heart for fried shellfish, so the first night I ordered the Beach Party; my waiter didn't mention that it's a meal that could easily feed two people, but he was new so I let it slide. Â Six fried shrimp, six fried oysters, five (5!) little hushpuppies, a huge piece of fried grouper, all on a bed of french fries. Â Absolutely everything on the plate was exactly as it should have been: shrimp were plump, oysters were tender and perfectly cooked, hushpuppies didn't have too many onions, grouper was flaky, and the fries were good too. Â I normally push aside whatever the fish or side items are, in order to focus on the shellfish, but not so with this plate. Â It was on point, y'all.
The second night I wanted to try something else, so I got the crab-stuffed shrimp with cheese grits. Â I was actually surprised that the crab-stuffed shrimp were also fried--I've always had them baked. Â They were okay, but not as good as the regular fried shrimp. Â I really enjoyed the cheese grits, because they were extra cheesy with cheese on top, though my dad wasn't crazy about them. Â (But let's be fair: it's dang hard to get grits to be perfect, especially to a discerning Southerner. Â I thought they were plenty good.)
I think perhaps the best thing about this place is that it can be a lot of different things: a place for a family to eat a meal together on the beach, or a bar for spring breakers to listen to live music. Â There was no wait for a table on Friday; we had to wait about 10 minutes with a group of 5 on Saturday. Â On Saturday there was live music, a guy with a guitar playing everything from Pina Colada to John Mayer, and even though we were close to the stage, the music wasn't so loud as to be intrusive.
Our waiters both nights were laid-back and casual without being douchey or aloof. Â The first one was new, and after our meal a manager came over to ask us how he'd done.
Perhaps my only complaint is that I wish there were more to choose from on the menu, because to be fair, a lot of it is fried. Â Beyond that, there's just about something for everybody here, and the next time I'm in PCB, I'll definitely be back.
Just moved into a condo down the street from Schooners and we definitely found our hang out spot!
The staff is super friendly.
The band was great.
The food was delicious.
The drinks were strong. Â
The view is amazing.
The atmosphere is chill.
LOVE IT!!!! Will definitely be there multiple times a week!
I was afraid, very afraid.
The menu reads "Not responsible for well done items."
This is not what someone who craves a rare ribeye steak wants to hear. But I ordered it anyway and waited for a charred piece of beef to appear.
However, what arrived was a perfectly cooked rare steak. Warm, pink and flavorful. It was so rare that it grossed out half of my coworkers. I was in Heaven!
The atmosphere is very casual and beach wear is completely appropriate. And speaking of, this place sits right on the water and allows for an awesome view of the white sand beach just a few feet away.
The service is good, but the wine not so much. I ordered a glass of Kendell Jackson merlot that tasted like it came from a bottle that sat opened in the bar for a few days. I decided not to suffer and just stuck to beer. Which given the warm weather was not a bad option.
Excellent service and awesome wait staff.
3 1/2 stars
This was my first restaurant experience of 2010. Yeah, I definitely coulda done better, but this is where the nieces wanted to go, and the nieces must be obeyed!
This place is actually a dive, but it's on the beach and serves up some tasty seafood. But alas, i wasn't feelin' the seafood this day, so I went for the wings. Surprisingly, they were great. They were large, juicy and tender. It came with celery, of which there were two stalks. Um, more please. Thanks. The blue cheese dressing looked like it had stayed out too late, so I passed on that.
I also ate about a quarter of my sister-in-law's greek salad. Wow, was it packed with garden variety goodness! I was very impressed with zesty dressing and the amount of feta cheese. Really, really good stuff.
Hunts was closed (Sunday), so we decided to check Schooner's out.
I am giving these guys an extra star just for the ability to walk straight in and get a table RIGHT on the beach at sunset, and in that moment, I would've taken that warm ocean breeze over a seat at the Ritz.
Now, I am normally a food first kind of gal, meaning that I will eat in a hole in the wall if the food is good, but if I am in a gorgeous place with lame food, I will not be happy. This place is more about the atmosphere, and I was pleased that the food was decent and reasonable. Seems like burgers are the thing to get here, but I wanted fish, and had a nice grouper sandie.
Schooner's was there in the right place at the right time. Thank you...
Picture this: you sit beside the water, gazing dreamily at the white sand and emerald green water. You drink a pina colada and eat fried shrimp, all the while listening to a live band play Jimmy Buffett tunes. Does life get any better than that? Not for me.
Schooners is the ultimate beach hangout. It's a hot spot for locals, so it's not as infested with spring breakers during the season as some of the other spots on the sand. The food is typical northern Florida fare-fried seafood and burgers, but it's tasty. Drinks are delicious, and staff is friendly. Really, you can't ask for much more.
They call it the "Last Local Beach Club," and it might well be that. Either way, it's the best place to be when you need to drink in a beach-side sunset while indulging in an adult beverage. Yum.
