Compared to everything else in this town, this place is a diamond in the rough. The décor is quaint and totally what you would expect from a family-run small-town restaurant.
The beer was cold, inexpensive and of course they had several Shiner beers on tap.
The fried pickle chips were excellent as was the burger I ordered. (what diet?)
Fair warning... it does not open until 5pm, even on Fridays. So if you are looking for a place to get the weekend started a little early, this is not the place.

We just had my parent's 50th wedding anniversary party at Sengelmann Hall.  The great folks there  were gracious hosts to our 30+ person crew.  They prepared a delicious buffet style dinner (legit chicken schnitzel and really tasty sauerkraut appetizers) , let us decorate with flowers and cakes, and were super accommodating and friendly.  They even let us tour the upstairs dance hall and served as impromptu photographers for our big bunch!
The building itself is a treasure, and it has been lovingly looked after.  The restoration work is stellar and preserves every bit of the 1890's charm.  The big, historic wooden  bar is also great place to have beer on a hot Texas afternoon.
I could not recommend this venue/restaurant/dancehall/bier garten more highly for hosting your next event, even if that event is just lunch:)  Kudos guys!!!

Great historical TX venue with lots of space.  Came here for a quick lunch on the way to San Antonio.  We had the Brautwurst and sauerkraut, chicken snitzel and fried pickles.  I recommend it all!

Neat old building & clean!  Appears to be the local hangout.
Enjoyed the old folks band playing blue grass. Food was good, but not special. Nice place to enjoy a beverage, good food & music.

**Don't go if you're rushed, service is friendly but terribly slow, they seemed short on waitstaff.

    Would visit again.

Nice Atmosphere.  Decent menu selections.  Despite being almost empty (Thu evening, we were fourth table of people), the food took 45 minutes to arrive, and it was lukewarm to cold.  Place had potential, but did not deliver.  Will try another place in Schulenberg next time.

My wife had heard a story on Celebrity Ghost Stories about this place with Jewel. We decided since we were close, we would check it out. This place is a 2 story dance hall/restaurant. We sat down and while we were waiting for the waitress, my youngest son and I decided to go to the 2nd floor. There was an identical Dance Hall up stairs and a party which was going on. We went back downstairs and waited. Service at this place was non existent. We about left because no one came and took our order. The lady came by and took our drink order. The Diet Coke and Coke tasted rancid. We asked her to bring us another. The 2nd one was not much better. We placed our order and asked if they had a kids menu. They did not. I did see more than one child in the place. How can you not have a kids menu if you have kids coming to this place? The menu is a mix of pizza, burgers and schnitzel. I ordered a burger and my wife ordered the chicken schnitzel. There were a few large parties so service was taking entirely too long. I believe the people having dinner was for the party up stairs.

We finally get our food. The hand cut fries are greasy and not very hot. The burger was big. The only thing good about it was the bun. The burger was bland. If you are going to cook a burger, how about at least some salt and pepper on the meat? The bacon was burnt. The Schnitzel was made with panko breadcrumbs. The German potato salad was a little bland.

I wish the waitress would have been more attentive. She never came back to ask us if we wanted refills. I had to goto the bar to get her to cash us out.  The food was not bad. For a nostalgic point of view, it is a cool little place. I am really surprised at the high scores. I did not think this place was anywhere near worthily of 5 stars.

On a Sat. night at 7pm you should see more than 2 tables present in a restaurant this size unless there are issues. There are issues. The service was like molasses in the winter, the food uninspired, but the atmosphere had a lot of charm. This restaurant with proper management and chef could be great, but until this happens find another place to eat.

Sengelmann Hall is the best and cleanest restaurant in Schulenburg, Texas! We had read about this venue in Texas Monthly and Texas Highways, but had never had time to stop over....

But, my husband and I decided to travel down I-10 so we could visit this legendary dance hall. We went to Sengelmann's new Bakery for fresh fruit kolaches (i recommend the dewberry and pineapple while they are in season) and then walked over to the restaurant for a nice, leisurely lunch.

Since we had decided to spend the night, we tasted a few pre-prohibition cocktails (i loved the Moscow Mule and he loved the Southside), and ordered up some fried pickles & mushrooms and a large macaroni & cheese with white truffle oil....yum!!! then, we shared the fresh salmon with champagne dill sauce and garlic mashed potatoes! The waiter said that it the fish is literally over-night-ed (is that a word? ha) to Schulenburg from Santa Monica, California and we believe it! it was sooo good. We split a small Dessert Sampler and the baker featured apple strudel, a parfait with fresh berries and Grand Marnier and a mini chocolate cupcake. it was perfect for sharing! We ended up ordering a dozen cupcakes l before leaving! (yep! that's how good their desserts are!!)

The people who work there are really nice....even the manager gave us a ghostly tour of the entire dance hall, which was really interesting!  We were impressed with the original decor.....beauty of the walls and bars....and the fact that the owners and staff have managed to capture and maintain its splendor after all those years.

There is even a bullet hole in the saloon! Definitely worth the trip to downtown Schulenburg! Sengelmann Hall is one in a million and we definitely plan on going back soon!

Why is zero stars not possible? First time here, and quite possibly the worst meal I have ever had. My wife found a roach on her plate, and they still charged us for it!!! Disgusting!!! Go to the oakridge smokehouse, sonic, whataburger, or literally anywhere else instead... This place is gross!!

We just got back from a mini Texas weekend getaway. Toured the Shiner Brewery on Friday, camped in Shulenberg and finished off the trip with dinner and dancing at Sengelmann Hall. The food was delicious. Fried sausage and sauerkraut balls with homemade mustard, yum! Shiner beer bread with Shiner Black butter...WHAT!! Live music in the dance hall. Great and friendly staff. One of the owners invited us back for brunch the next morning and offered a couple of complimentary mimosas, which we totally took her up on. Glad we did because the eggs shiner (or eggs Benedict) was incredible! We would love to come back again with a group of friends.

beautiful! delicious! i went with a group of folks from the contemporary arts museum to visit the dance hall & a few of the painted churches in the area (be sure to not miss them! especially Saint Mary's in high hill.), and my goodness!

this is a restored czech-german dance hall, & the proprietors dana harper & hana hillerova have really outdone themselves. the space is gorgeous, with a replica bar recreated from photos (taken in the early 1900s) of the original, the original long leaf pine dance floor, and sunlight pouring in from all the windows during the day. the menu is authentic czech-german food, created by hana (who is czech herself), and i'm here to tell you it's incredibly good, from appetizers through the main course all the way to dessert, they kitchen absolutely knocked my socks of. so so yummy and entirely worth the trip in an of itself. oh! & they have fourteen kinds of beer on tap, up & downstairs. fourteen. yayyy for czech-german texans, hey?

but the real selling point is, of course, the dancing. every week there's polka sunday, when the locals come out and promenade around the dance floor, instructing all the new kids as they shuffle along. very very fun! & there are dances every weekend (check out the website or phone them for a schedule of bands & events). so get on your dancing shoes, bring an appetite, and scoot your boots over to sengelmann hall; you'll be so glad you did!

We rolled into Schulenburg, which is closer to Austin than Houston surprisingly, with our hopes high for good food and good dancing. Although the sign says that 2699 people live in Schulenburg there was not a soul, nor a car on the road to be seen.

We ended up finding Senglemann Hall  on accident, but there's no way you could miss that wonderful outside decor that almost looks like a fun-house from a cheesy carnival movie.  The inside is just nice to sit and look at ( not surprising as the wife of the owner is the artist commissioned to do the artworks at Bush International Airport) and get a feel for a what a grand establishment of the 1890's in Texas would be.

So, what do they do? They have kick-ass, reasonably priced, life threatening food. Meatloaf sandwich wrapped in multiple pieces of bacon? Good? Yes! Healthy? Negative! That goes for everything else from the Latkes with sauerkraut to the banana pudding.  Their pre-prohibition cocktails were a welcome reprieve from the heat, and they were hand crafted with love from the bartenders. They also had a wonderful looking beirgarten that we just couldn't bear to try out since it was 1 billion degrees outside.  The dance hall upstairs also has music most days, and you can check the schedule online, but they often cost a couple of dollars. Unfortunately the day we rolled through the cost was 20$ per person, and we just couldn't swing it then. a minor flaw in a wonderful experience.

The service is kind of slow, but its friendly and helpful. There's a lot of love in everything from the cracking paint on the walls which just makes you feel all warm inside.

The dance hall was amazing. The restaurant is downstairs while the bar and stage are upstairs. The space is beautiful, the beer on tap is great, and the food was really above and beyond. They only had a buffet (it was their 2nd weekend of being in business) but the food was incredible--mashed sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, sauteed spring vegetables, black eyed peas, salad, cabbage, sauerkraut, fried fish, brisket, chicken soup, chicken and mushroom. All great. Came with dessert, too. The chocolate creme pie was yummy (not a homemade crust, though) but my friends said the banana pudding wasn't as good as what they remembered from church socials.

The dance hall upstairs was great, too. Slick floor, big space, lots of places to sit, a smokers porch outside, and really really friendly locals.

The drive from San Antonio wasn't too bad at all, and there are tons of cool hotels to stay in.
