My girlfriend and I wanted to shoot pool while we visited her parents in Palm Desert. We found a listing for Sharky's Family Billiards and we imagined it to be a Chucky E Cheese with pool tables. We pulled up to Sharky's and noticed it was in a very odd location-in a warehouse business district with nothing else surrounding the place. We walked through the door and wondered if it was open because the place was really dark. I took note of the dozen or so pool tables all with red felt playing surfaces and walked towards the bar. Oh-one other thing caught my eye; the 38 inch High Def TV in the bar was playing 'live' cockfights!!. I kid you not-cockfights. It was some ESPN style station (I assume from Mexico since cockfighting is illegal in the U.S) that had the ESPN style crawl with scores from other cockfights(I for one did not know of the scoring system in cockfighting, I assumed all cockfights ended in a 1-0 score). The bar owner noticed me and my girlfriend looking with awe at the cockfight and quickly changed the channel to SPIKE TV which was showing Blade 2. The jukebox was blasting Mexican music and a particular form of Mexican music-
'Musica Norteña'(Music of the North) which sounds like a crazy combination of Polka and Latin music. Only beer at this place, no liquor, bad news for me since I cannot drink beer, good news for my girlfriend who had six or seven Dos Equis. The pool tables appeared to be in average shape but it only cost $1.00 for each game, you can't bet that price anywhere. So we played about six games of pool and listened to the patrons scream out in joy when their favorite song came on the jukebox. Suddenly out of nowhere, the waitress pulls a red curtain to divide the room in half. I peek around this secret red curtain and see a Karaoke machine; yes ladies and gentlemen it is Karaoke night and 95% of the songs are in Spanish. We hung around because to be honest, this is the best way in the world to learn Spanish. One would see the words on the screen and the patron from
Guadalajara or Monterrey would shout out -and I do mean shout out the lyrics. Me and my girlfriend decided to sing along and we had the best time. The gentlemen running the karaoke came over to us speaking Spanish and gave us the Karaoke book. Neither me or my girlfriend speak Spanish, but our performance convinced him otherwise. We hung around about an hour and  increased our Spanish vocabulary by ten fold (corazón means heart-trust me, it is in every song). I give this place 5 stars and everyone should go to enjoy the cheap pool, $3 beers and if your lucky you might see a 'lucha del martillo' (cockfight) on the T.V screen.
