We came here off of the interstate on our way south and found it homey and cute. The food was good but the service could've been better. I had the rueben which was good and my mother had the chicken salad which was a little dry. We liked the homemade chips and coleslaw. Overall, it was a good place to stop and eat if you aren't in for a gourmet experience. A nice little dive.
Review Source:Mount Vernon is a strange town. Â I think it only exists because of the confluence of two interstates combined with the fact that there are no other towns of any size in a 25 mile radius. Â It seems to me they built the town just as a traveler oasis. Â I found myself in Mount Vernon the night of Snowpocalypse (snow wasn't bad down here... just a bit of ice but temp stayed high enough to prevent a disaster) and after determining that this town of convenience is pretty much chain-restaurant central, I went out to find a local place for dinner. Â Thus I found myself at the Silver Streak Inn.
You would never find this restaurant if you just pulled off the interstate. Â It is way over on the east side of town probably 3 or 4 miles off the interstate. Â And I don't get the reviews that have called this place a 'dive bar'. Â This is just a small town family restaurant/diner. Â Yes, they do have three beers on tap, but I don't even think they have liquor. Â Didn't feel like a bar at all to me. Â It's a simple family restaurant.
Restaurant was pretty empty the night I went. Â Just one other group of older adults having dinner. Â I ate at the counter and had the ribeye with broccoli and twice baked potato as sides. Â Food was good but not great and loved that all steaks automatically come with sauteed mushrooms. Food was cooked to order, and service was very friendly. Â The woman at the counter made pleasant conversation given and they had American Idol on the TV so watched that with dinner. Â All and all an extremely low key and comfortable place to grab dinner. Â Almost felt like eating at home.
Definitely give this place a try if you are in Mount Vernon and want to get away from the Applebee's, Outback, Lone Star and other chains that dominate the highway exit!
