My husband and I really want to love this place, but it has been hard. Â It's close to home and easy for us to get to. I really enjoy their salads and my husband can always find a good burger or special. The beer is decent, and I like the building and the view. Because it is usually the two of us, we can get seated pretty quickly. However, once seated, the service is usually absolutely awful. We often have to wait a while for our first beer or to order (upwards of 30 minutes), even when it isn't crowded. The restaurant is so loud and the karaoke and mostly mediocre live music doesn't help. Our last trip there was on a Monday karaoke night... We didn't expect our dinner to be interrupted by pretty awful karaoke at 8pm. We were pretty scarred from that experience, and I'm not sure we'll back any time soon.
Review Source:The food good and the Beer was very good. Â I would definitely recommend the Clam Chowder. Â The Moonstone Porter was excellent, with strong Chocolate Flavors. Â The sampler that they give you includes 5 beers that are in generous sized glasses. Â The service was mediocre at best. Â First, they took over 20 minutes to seat us in a Restaurant that had ten plus open tables, second they brought out parts of our order and took quite awhile to bring out other parts. Â My wife asked for extra napkins, and the waitress never brought them out. Â The Bar was packed and they obviously do very well as a Brewery and Bar, the food was average, with the Clam Chowder being above average.
Review Source:If you're going here for the beer, then you will be happy! I had their small beer sampler, 5 4 oz beers of my choice for only $6! And I was a fan of each and every one of them. For you non-beer drinkers: Their Raspberry lambic is great! As is the Kona porter! Wasn't a fan of the Strawberry Wheat, but the American Ale was right up my alley with a nice creamy finish! My brother had their IPA, which is usually not my go-to beer, but I would definitely order it if I ever saw it on tap somewhere! The food was ok. It was priced well and I had no problem eating every last bite... Although I just don't see myself sitting at home going "Oh man I'm really craving some 6Rivers food!" I thought the prices were extremely reasonable and the beer was great and thats why I gave them 4 stars. If I'm ever in the area again this will probably be the place I stop by!!
Review Source:I have reserved my review for awhile, hoping that I could add a star or two the overall critique of this establishment. Â Unfortunately I have to be honest and hope that subsequent visits can allow me to change my mind and add more positive notes in the future.
I love their beer and hope to contribute future monies to this establishment, but until i hear better reviews and hear a real change being enacted I will not visit this place again and will encourage others to seriously consider reading the below before solidifying their choice. Â
Pros: BEER! Their beer is good and they have great selection of different flavors and twist that I appreciate. Â
VIEW: An amazing view if a clear, non-hazy day is in store. Â If its foggy or the marine layer is in, its a meah view.
CONS:
SERVICE: Â Oh my God, this place has the worst service in town! Â Seriously, out of the 20+ times I have been here in the last 8 years, I have had pretty much the humboldt standard of food service help, which is awful. Â For a specific example, recently (less than 1 week) we had a table of 6. Â It took them 30 minutes to seat us and they were at no more than 60% capacity. Â Then, from seating to receiving the check it took over 1.5 hours and that was with no dessert and no appetizer. We counted her coming to our table no more than two times in that period of time and we asked for new pints each time. Â Hello? we are adding to the tab, you should be catering to us who will add to your tip, or in this case left her a 10% tip. The owners really need to improve this. Â
FOOD: Â Ok pub food but the prices are crazy high and the taste and quality is mediocre. Â I really hate to give bad reviews, but this place needs to have a professional restauranteur come in and see that if you are going to charge $18-24 for a dinner the meat should not be dry, the vegetables tasting freezer burned. Â I would have expected based off the quality of food to have a range of $12-18.
SOUND: Â The absolute WORST noise level building in this county, even worse than open air restaurants I have been to in major metropolitan areas. If the place is playing any sort of music or is at over 40% capacity, you cannot 1) hear yourself think 2) have any conversation with anyone 3) enjoy yourself and the company of your dinner mates. Â Awful!
Every year during an annual trip to Arcata, my friends and I always make sure to spend an evening at Six Rivers.
The atmosphere is fun, and I love the big bar. On our most recent trip, we ordered a full flight and sampled almost all of their beer. Hm. Most of their darks tasted the same and nothing really stood out. Pretty disappointing. However, my boyfriend enjoyed the IPAs and a few of their beers were refreshing and tasty. I expected a little more from them though!
I ate the portobello mushroom burger and it was awesome! Delicious.
This place is fun, and I wish I could go back more often-- if not for the beer, at least for their awesome food. Cheesecake was also amazing (but then again, when is it not?!)
Unfortunate experience at Six Rivers Brewery tonight. I can tolerate a lot as far as food service goes but sometimes there is no getting around a sucky experience. And I like this place. Great beer and good food.
We arrived hungry at 8:50PM. We even let our waitress know as much. We quickly ordered the date night special of a pitcher of beer and a pizza. The first clue of problems was the waitress not writing down our pizza order even though she had to repeat it several times. We made a point of asking for one half no cheese and even asked if that was a problem. She left our table to take orders at two others.
Fifteen minutes later we ordered two dinner salads to tide us over. They arrived promptly.
Thirty minutes in our pizza arrived with all cheese. My partner is a vegan so we sent it back.
45 minutes in we asked for bread and were offered oyster crackers. Later a cup of soup.
One hour and ten minutes in with no pizza in site we decided to leave. The place was almost empty. The manager wanted to charge us for two pizzas. We never ate any pizza. We paid for the beer and salads.
Bad nite for all. But at the very least we would have expected the staff to acknowledge the screw up. Sorry to say we got nothing. We might give it another try once this memory fades. We have had better experiences here in the past.
I have been here several times since October 2011. Â The first time was amazing. Â Unfortunately, it has seriously declined since then. Â Each time the service was worse than the time before. Â But this time the food was bad, too. Â
We waited over 40 minutes for our appetizer which arrived AFTER our salads and at the same time as our meal. Â I probably would have gotten over it if I had some beer to drink while waiting. Â Too bad the beer took just as long to arrive as the appetizer. Â I had the chicken katsu. Â It was burnt on the outside and nearly raw on the inside. Â
To round out our experience, when I laid down cash for the bill our server ask if I wanted the change back. Â SERIOUSLY? Â That is beyond presumptuous. Â Then when she brought my change back she had shorted me. Â I will not be returning which makes me sad but I work too hard for my money to have it stolen.
I loved this place! Good burgers with patties made from local grass-fed beef. The beer was amazing - our group ordered an ale, a white chocolate wheat beer (much more delicious than I was expecting), the stout and their porter, all of which were good. We were there on a Monday night, karaoke night, which was a lot of fun. Service was sometimes spotty (our waitress went up to sing a couple times - she was good!), but everyone was friendly enough and we were in no rush, so we didn't mind. I will definitely be back the next time I'm in the area!
Review Source:Great dinner the only thing is you can't order half the menu till after five we got there at 4:30 for dinner and could not order off the dinner menu I would give them 5 stars if they did not do that there garlic chicken wings were amazing they have chunks of garlic on them and so yummy I live garlic so it was amazing to me also they have a sample platter for beer 10 4oz beers for $12 great price and great beer
Review Source:Some local friends took us here on a busy Friday night. so there's that to start with.. the place was packed. Â Cant really complain, it's a bar and people go here.
we walk up to the hostess podium and she tells us it's a 30 minute wait for a table. fine, but when we walk passed 5 empty tables to the bar then after about 10 minutes of standing at the crowded bar we sit at a table near the bar just to wait the hostess comes and says "I need to seat these people here" these people, who JUST WALKED IN. she seated at least 3 more groups who walked in after us. Now, they might have had reservations but what the fuck. There's empty tables everywhere and a full Friday night wait-staff im sure can handle it. So we wait longer and finally get seated, walking passed 3 empty tables to get to our table in the back. Â It just felt like they were fucking us over because we weren't locals or something. Â The whole place had this locals only kind of vibe. But apparently people love it.
We finally order, the service was kind of slow but again, waitress walking right by us many times when we were flagging her down. Â
the food was totally average. the thing our friend was raving about and one of the "things" to get here was literally, tater-tots (most likely from a bag and previously frozen) with bacon pieces and melted cheese with chopped green onions. This is stoner food 101 and anyone can make this shit at home.
Oh yea and it was fucking loud as fuck. Bar's play music, people converse, but it was annoying. Â And then... then! the entertainment for the night starts up... DJ whocares starts spinning his records. fucking Reggae, then reggae with a hip hop flavor, then a dubstep reggae song.. what the hell is it with Humboldt and fucking reggae? and of course his rig had to be louder than the jukebox was, of course.. it wouldnt be rock n roll if it wasnt.
I have zero desire or reason to ever go back to this watering hole.
I feel honored to be 6 Rivers 100th review..
You cannot lose with this place. Great for families, events or a date for two! Â Food is consistent and Mikey is always coming up with great new ideas for the menu, so its doubtful if you become a regular you will ever get bored with the menu.
AMAZING view and ambiance. Live music and events are a regular. ST Patricks day is usually off the hook. Customers and staff alike will instantly make you feel like family. Meridityh and Talia are two of the most incredible women I know and am very proud to know them and see the way they run their buisness. FYI...Ive been at some events that theyve catered and I promise you wont be disappointed. Beer is excellent and if you dont know what to get  try out their sampler. In all reality all other Breweries should be trying to be this good! This is the bar that you would set excellence to!
This place was pretty cool. For a late Tuesday night though, it was pretty loud with just a handful of people. Â I can't even imagine what the weekend must be like...yikes. Â The fried chicken is worth it if you buy the sandwich, not the special ($18!!!). Â Salad was awesomely fresh with interesting ingredients and the chicken was perfectly seasoned and cooked. Â Very good service. Â 4 stars only because I had to talk at the top of my lungs to my lady who was all of 2 feet away from me.
Review Source:We came for a big group birthday dinner, about 15-20 people.... our waitress had an attitude, chicken wings came out cold, some people's food took over 45 minutes to come out, and my VEGETARIAN portobello mushroom sandwich had a GIANT chunk of bacon in it and the waitress just laughed it off and still charged me for it. Â We tipped her appropriately. Â I mean come on out of a 20 person party she couldn't be real and just take off the sandwich...i mean bacon is pretty offensive to a vegetarian. Â Oh well, now I remember why we don't come here by choice.
Review Source:It's really difficult for me to come here, which is sad because this restaurant has interesting ties to my family, but it's just sooooooo loud. Ridiculous kind of loud where you're screaming at someone across the table from you.
For the price, the food isn't that good. You're mainly paying for the view from the windows, which you can get for free at many other places where you don't have to scream to have a conversation.
I don't like their beer, I'm not sure if it's because I'm such a Lost Coast fan but it just doesn't taste good. I like spicy things and thought I would try the Chili Beer. Big mistake; heart burn all night and my stomach hurt.
Recently we travelled up north to share the holidays with my sweetie's family. On our way up, I really started craving Six Rivers Brewery. Luckily everyone was okay with the choice and we met up there for dinner.
I love all things spicy, but the Chili Pepper Ale is by far one of my top 10 favorites (and I drink a lot of fancy pants beer). The heat is mild, but the flavor is so pronounced that any chili lover should give it a shot.
For the appetizer portion, we ordered the jalapeno peppers and I asked for the Death sauce. It makes my mouth water with a fresh heat that is undescribable and irristable. So much so, that I put as a dressing on my salad. (Note to Six Rivers, please start bottling that sauce. I'd buy it!)
I was craving a steak, so my honey and I decided to split a steak dinner. We ordered the Tri-tip which the kitchen will split into two portions. They charge you a little more, but you get good portions of the sides and it's a lot less than ordering two steaks.
I really wanted to purchase the bottled 22oz. Chili Pepper Ale (which I purchased before at Beer Revolution in Oakland), but they don't sell them. You can get a growler and fill that if you choose.
I had to up the stars from 4 to 5 because this time, my food was so incredible that I am craving it now. The steak was perfectly medium and the sides were great. The service was quick and they were very accomodating to our larger group.
The food is okay. The atmosphere is pretty noisy. Went on a first date here and it happen to be a busy night AND Jazz night... needless to say, I didn't hear a word my date said the whole night. The beer selection is nice and the staff seem more than competent. I would just avoid this place for first dates.
Review Source:Stopped by this place while visiting the north coast. Got a sampler of 5 beers, everything from the chili ale to the strawberry beer to the porter. I'd read about the chili ale and while it tasted good at first, to me it was one of those flavors where a sample is fine, but I wouldn't want a pint of it. I felt the same about the strawberry beer. But again, everyone else seems to love it, so just my opinion.
Overall the beers were OK and I'd go back if I were in the area and try out some of the other brews I missed. Main reason for the fourth star is a mix of the great view and the bar fries...sometimes a gal just needs bacon cheese fries.
Good food! The outside does not match the inside at all. Very clean and tidy, and very polite waitress. It was extremely loud, and the service was a little slow. But overall a great experience. My parents and I got a half order of nachos first--which were oh-so good--and it filled us up so much we could hardly eat our entrées! The beer was very good too :)
Very good place to go. Very family friendly too! I will definitely be going back. :)
I used to enjoy eating chicken wings at Six Rivers because the chicken was fresh and moist..and the view is incredible!
however..lately the chicken has been very dry.. it seems like it was boiled before then reheated.. and the service has been dry as well. There were times where we had hair in our salad  and the server just shrugged it off--and did not offer a new salad or any sort of concern.. but yeah..i'm still looking for decent chicken wings--and Calhouns should be back out during Farmer's Market..
The place is loud at the bar - but quiet bars are scary.
The food is ok - nothing too exciting and the beer is just okay as well. In terms of breweries Lost Coast is the place to go to, not this one.
We tried the beer sample and am sad to say that the beer at 3 RIvers taste watered down. The IPA is weak tasting, but wheat wasn't too bad. The extra lemon helped. All in all it was a very weird mix of beer. The chili beer is overrated.
We ate here yesterday, now I remember why I haven't returned here in 3 years. We came for lunch at about 3:20 so it wasn't busy. We decided to have a light lunch since it was so close to dinner time. I ordered a half turkey sandwich with a side salad, my wife had a salad, and my two children had the PB&J childrens sandwich with a side of fries. We waited for over a half hour to get our food, we even saw people who came in after us get their food before us. After we ate and I was ready to pay the bill I asked the waitress why it took so long to get 2 1/2 sandwiches, 2 salads, and two sides fries prepared and why we got our food after others who definitely came in after we had ordered. She tried to tell me that since the other customers ordered appetizers they got their food first. That doesn't make sense to me, if I had ordered appetizers then I would have eaten sooner??? Seriously?
Also, here is a rule that all waitresses and waiters should remember......Always, Always serve children first. Don't give me my food and have my children sit there with nothing in front of them for 5 minutes, because I'm not going to eat my food in front of my children.
Never going back!!
Had the shrimp scampi. Spicy but not eye watering spicey. Thankfully.
Met with some good friends. Had a nice time. Laughed talked drank beer. Hubby had Moonstone Porter and a burger. A fine choice. I had Common Beer (as they call it. Craft brewed of course by them, just a funny name) I hadn't had it before, although I have had many beers at this place. It was ok. Went ok with scampi too.
OUr friends had burgers and a chicken sandwich. we had the wheat beer and it was tasty too. A tasty brew at a pub with a view.
OH YEEEEAAAAAH, DADDY.
Oh, sorry about that! Â I STILL get excited when I think about the beer tasting we did here. Â I literally discovered not even 24 hours prior to visiting Six Rivers that I had a thing for Porters, so I couldn't wait to try them here. Â Then I see this one called "Spicy Chili Ale", and I can't help but ask the server about it. Â She tells me that it's brewed with something like 6 different hot peppers, or some crazy shit. Â It was like the heavens opened up and angels began to sing. Â In my head, I pretended that this beer was meant just for me. Â I MAY have started to drool a bit because she looked at me kind of funny. Â My friend thought she was preventing disaster by telling me that this beer burns the throat going down, then realized that actually made me even MORE excited.
I MAY have made a small error in assuming that level 3 on their hot wing spice-o-meter was tame. Â It burned my goddamn mouth off. Â THEN I tried the spicy chili ale. Â It was like liquid fire. Â Call me crazy, I don't care, but it hurt so good.
As for the Porters... Kona, and also Macadamia Nut. Â Are you kidding me? Â I had no idea beer could be this delicious. Â I'm so glad I have finally seen the light.
The food was pretty tasty, and the service was great, but I couldn't give you more detail than that. Â The 5 stars is almost solely based on the tasty, tasty beer.
Absolute worst dining experience ever.
The parking lot was crowded and there were homeless people out front asking me for money both coming and going.
The dining room was loud but not busy which was counter intuitive from the crowded parking lot. I was sat and my waitress came 20 minutes later to take my drink order, without introducing herself or any of the specials.
After I got my drinks, I placed  my order and my great wait began. My food arrived more than one hour later, with no explanation or apology. The food was good but the portions were not generous and the waitress never bothered to ask me how it was or if I needed anything. Being very dissatisfied with my meal I ask to speak to the manager who did nothing except say sorry and then proceed to gossip about me and make rude faces.
I've never felt so dissatisfied with any dining experience in my life.
Humboldt Brewery Tour Stop #1
This place has charm. You can always tell a place by who the regulars are and the regulars at Six Rivers made this visit. The bar is in the shape of a horseshoe allowing for you to socialize with everyone., which happened. The bartender was a delight as well and gave us recommendations for the rest of our trip.
Rosie's Strawberry Wheat
Trula Pilsner
Moonstone Porter
IPA
Wee Heavy Scotch Ale (Collaboration with Mad River)
Darius Durrell
Chile Pepper Beer
Raspberry Lambic
The beer was very good, especially the Porter & Scotch Ale but the company is what stood out. I will come back anytime I am in Humboldt again.
Based on my experience here, three stars is generous, but the beers that I tried were rather good, so three stars it is.
We wanted to stop at one brewery in this part of California and were torn between here, Lost Coast, and Eel River. We decided to come here. The aesthetic was not what I expected; a little cheesy with way too much wood paneling everywhere and a flashing screen advertising their upcoming events.
Service was horrendous, a complete disaster. We sat at the bar figuring service would be quicker. The bartendress was nice enough to let us try the two porters before deciding which to order (the Kona Moon porter is far superior to the Moon Stone). We may have shared an IPA--if we did, I don't remember it. We also tasted the Chili Pepper Ale which was super interesting, very spicy and tasty--don't think I could drink a full pint of it, though.
We also wanted to order food. We told the bartender, but it still took maybe forty minutes to an hour until she took our food order, and she was snippy when she finally did. They had two options for veggie burgers, a Tofu House burger and a regular ol' gardenburger (yuck). I ordered the tofu burger, but alas, they were out. There was a long wait again for our food to be delivered. It was decent, but unremarkable.
All in all, this was a really frustrating stop. Alright beer, but the service and lackluster food overshadowed it.
Went here a couple of times recently. Â Man, I can't believe I never went to this place before! Â It's located at such a nice spot, in McKinleyville, on top of a hill overlooking the Mad River and the Pacific Ocean (on clear days). Â Inside you have a huge space. Â On the right side is a dining area & on the left is the big bar with a dining area surrounding it. Â We went to the latter. Â Here is where a band was getting set up to perform. Â Our group had a big table right next to the band. Â We were here for grub and brews.
Now whenever I hit up a new micro-brewery, I love getting a sampler (I generally can't finish them on myself, but that's the point, I can get EVERYONE to help out, and we can discuss the brews). Â
Man!! Â This sampler was huge! Â There were 10+ samples to choose from (8-standards and a few seasonals). Â I think I liked just about every one of 'em---except for the Pilsner (I'm just not a Pilsner person--too light for me). Â The one which is still etched in my mind and on my tongue: Â Chile Pepper Ale. Â Yeah, I'm not kidding! Â This concoction is straight up spicy! Â I mean its so spicy your taste buds are still tingling for hours afterward (heck, I'm tingling just thinkin' about it now!). Â It's definitely an acquired taste, and I basically ended up drinking this brew on my own, but that's what I like about it. Â It's SOO unique. Â It's something I've never had before, and it IS a beer. Â As for the rest of the brews. Â They were all pretty freakin' excellent. Â I have a new favorite brew pub.
The food was decent. Â I can't really remember what I ordered though (I think the Sampler had something to do with that). Â The band was pretty cool--a bluesy type of group playing mainly old rock covers. Â A couple of women danced a song at one point.
On our second visit, the only thing I really remember are ringing ears. Â The band was TOO LOUD. Â I didn't have ear plugs, so I chewed up my napkin and stuck chunks in my ear holes (trick from my concert-going-old-days). Â Because of this experience (mainly the LOUD band), I have to take a star off. Â
Overall, I'd say this is an excellent place. Â The location, space, and the beers are memorable (just go for a quieter night, unless you like ringing ears!).
Good beer and good food. Â Top beers for those that like dark beer would be the Jacob Marley's Ghost and the Blarney Stout. Â Jacob Marley's Ghost is seasonal, winter, and have a great taste. Â A great novelty beer is the Chili beer. Â SPICY but so good. Â Oh, and they have single malts! Â Be careful with bartenders and the Scotch. Â They have little experience handling whiskey neat. Â Wine and liquor is available, so have a little fun.
Food is good.  I do have to tip my hat to their creativity and tact.  Their food is always delicious.  Be prepared to shell a little money for food but it is worth it.  Bar fries...  mmmm  The specials never let me down.  Come hungry and thirsty!
Music is plentiful at this location. Â Most cases I'd say the music rocks! Â Sometimes it is way too loud, even for someone that likes to rock out. Â You can always gauge the volume if all the seating is taken in the far room and tables are plentiful in front of the band. Â Even so, there is some awesome music here, local and guests. Â Oh, and there is karaoke. Â Either avoid or flock to this night, once a week.
Overall, Six Rivers Brews is a great night out for the hungry and thirsty among us.
I went here recently and I just realized I haven't yelped this place! I've been here many times over the past couple years and they never disappoint. Although I must admit, they don't really know how to serve a single malt whiskey. Anyways, if you're a beer lover like me who cares? I love their porters as well as the Blarney Stout. And if you are feeling a bit adventurous, try Jacob Marley's Ghost when it's available. 9.6% Alcohol!! Come to think of it, they make great seasonal beers. Had the pumpkin ale a few months ago. It was like liquid pumpkin pie!
The food is great! Every time! Their pizzas are very good which was surprising. I recommend the BBQ chicken pizza. Although, next time I'm there I have to try out a dessert.
This place does get very busy and service does suffer because of it. This is not a place to go if you want a quiet evening among friends. Unless if you go earlier in the day. But if you want to go out for a good time and good beer, this is the place to be! I'm really going to miss this place when I move away :(
Chile Pepper Ale burned me just right and sat nice and warm in my tummy. Â Not for the faint of heart though. Â It really is hot and the waitress did a good job of making sure that I knew what I was getting into. Â Follow that up with the McKinleyville burger with onion rings and a Moonestone Porter. Â Fat with food and happy about it.
Good beer, good food, relaxed atmosphere. Â Well done.
