Skyway Bar & Grill is one of my favorite places to eat. They have excellent food, often from local farms, an excellent selection of beer, also from local producers, and their staff is the best. During the colder months, there's always a roaring fire, and during the warmer months, a huge outside area. If you are in the area, stop in. Once you do, you will not be able to stop going back.
Review Source:We ate at this place on our road trip to through the northwest. We had just come from Mt. Hood, and we were hungry!
We saw the big sign that says BBQ, and decided to try out the place. It had indoor and outdoor seating. Interesting decorations. They do have a stage for live music, and karaoke. We got there before the dinner rush. We ordered BBQ ribs, macaroni and cheese, and steak. The sauces they had for the BBQ was delicious. Apparently, the owner makes different ones each day, so you may not have the same one if you come back. Either way it was delicious!!!
As we waited for our food, they had different games you can play that you can bring to your table. Having kids with us, this was a plus.
After we ate dinner, we got dessert. My god they had the best peach cobbler! It was to die for!
The staff was very friendly, and service was great!
I agree with the other reviews that the pulled pork was pretty good. The Mac and Cheese was not bad either. The salmon was decent as well, but they forgot to mention it didn't come with any sides, same with all the meat dishes. When I ordered steamed veggies on the side, it took them 10+ mins to return with just string beans with salt and butter. This brings me to my main complaint: the service was very slow (we were seated inside; most of the action seemed to take place on the patio with live music). Â Still, with just a few customer inside and right next to the bar, even the beverage service was way too slow. It took almost 30 mins to get the food. Can't say I'm a fan...
Review Source:Did somebody say pulled pork?! Â OH YUM! Â We were on a summer road trip up the mountain, so pleased to find this little gem! Â It was a warm day, we sat out back, enjoyed the relaxed funky atmosphere. Â Hubby's burger was also good, but I will have the pork again (and again) when we are up that way again!
Review Source:Seriously? So good. We were in Virginia last week and had what was supposed to be awesome barbecue according to Diners and Driver-ins. It was good. But then we had barbecue at the Skyway...and it was 10 times better. The meat. The sauces. The sides. Not to mention the setting, the service, the music and the throwback mechanical boat for the kiddies. Â We had a great time with our one year old. Brisket, pulled pork and ribs were all finger lickin' good. The mashed potatoes and cole slaw were excellent. Kids loved the mac and cheese and the steamed veggies. The server was happy to cook the veggies well for our little ones. Why go to the South when you can go to Zig Zag? The only thing we didn't love was the baked beans. My husband called them "Texas style" because they were spicy. They weren't bad, just not what this Oregonian thinks of as baked beans.
Review Source:I looooooooove this place! I had never tried it until this past year, and since the first time I always look forward to stopping here after a day of boarding. You have to order the full rack of ribs, the delicious mac and cheese and the Moroccan coffee. The HH here is yummy too. Their spinach salad and two sliders + mac and cheese is to dieeeeee for. If you can score a place right next to the fireplace it's amazing. The staff has always been sweet, friendly and accommodates us no matter how small/large our party is. Great work Skyway you've won me over!
Review Source:LOVE LOVE LOVE this place! We have a condo up in Government Camp, and when we go there, our children also ask "Are we going to Skyways for dinner?" and when we reply "Yes!" they scream "Yay! Frickles!" Frickles are their amazing deep fried pickles.
Their Happy Hour is a great value, and their food is always tasty. A friendly, welcoming place that everyone should experience on their way to or from the mountain!
Super fun place to stop on Mt. Hood with kids in tow. BBQ pretty good, great flavors, fabulous sides. It was Easter and I had the smoked bunny (rabbit) with kale and sauteed beets on the side. YUM. Super YUM. Husband's brisket was good, ribs were a little fatty, but great rub flavor. Baked mac-n-cheese was rich and satisfying. Fries yummy. Good selection of beers. Atmosphere funky and fun. Outdoor lights and fire pit with lots of tables to enjoy spring sunshine. Kids loved foosball table and random hula hoops and bubble machine - fun place.
Review Source:Everything is homemade here. The huckleberry salad dressing, the homemade smoked almonds, all the BBQ sauces. The BBQ tofu is wonderful too. Yes the Mac and cheese is as good as others say and try the garlic cheese fries too. Â This is a great place for real food after a long day on the mtn
Review Source:My friend took me here on the way down from Mt Hood, promising me the best mac and cheese I'd ever had. Â I was skeptical, but she was right. Â I tried the frickles (fried pickles), the brisket, and my friend's order of ribs. Â All were great, but the mac and cheese was amazing! Â Minus one star for the really long wait for our food to come out.
It doesn't look like much on the side of the road, but worth a stop.
OMG Ahhh-mazing!
Stop what you are doing now. Â Go here. Eat. Â Drink. Â Roll yourself out full of the best food you have ever eaten.
We popped in after a day at Ski Bowl. They are usually closed Mondays, but it was Presidents Day and they stay open for the holidays.
We got a wonderful tour of the menu. Â They make everything in house: smoke their own meats, pickles, infuse their spirits. Â It's all so worth it and delicious. Â
Due to the holiday, some of things weren't available. Â My friend and I split the Reuben sandwich and an Oder of the large Mac. Â Changed my life.
I also enjoyed two warm cocktails. Â The house made drinks hit the spot. I had a hot apple cider, with homemade whip cream. Â Who doesnt love homemade whip. Â
Make this your next stop!
Excellent! Â Go here!
The Good:
1. The Food - Â Top notch! Â Everything we had was excellent. Â We ordered the Buffalo wing appetizer "Wangs", a Hamburger, mac n cheese, and a side of beans. Â Everything was outstanding. Â
2. Drinks - I ordered a house margarita. Â Good size (pint glass on the rocks), decent flavor/strength (not overloaded with sweet & sour), great price ($5.50).
3. Atmosphere - Very cool place, busy after a weekend ski day. Â Nice fire in the room to the right of the entry door. Â
4. Owner(s) - overheard the owner (female) talking to customers next to us about the restaurant and investment and plans.... she really seemed excited and to care about everything.
5. Live Music
The Bad:
1. Service is a bit spotty and forgetful. Â We actually came to eat the night before and we couldn't get anyone to help us or tell us how to get a table or how long the wait was. Â Tables were occupied but there were only a few people waiting. Â Waitresses all seemed too stressed to deal with anyone else and there did not appear to be a hostess.
2. Music goes on late.... too late for apres ski fun. Â (9PM start time)
3. Prices are pretty good. Â Definitely can't complain, but the entrees/sandwiches should really come with a side. Â The $9 hamburger comes with no fries. Â To add a "handful" of fries is $2. Â The fries are great and should be added, but it would be nice if the sandwiches came with a side. Â Small thing.
Remember those times, traveling to & from Mt. Hood, you saw the building with big orange letters "B B Q" sprawled across the cone-shaped roof but you never thought or took the time to stop there & eat? Well you should have because SBAG serves better food than what Calamity Jane's or one of the unappealing selections in Sandy, OR could ever offer. True dat.
A few items here worth mentioning are the mac 'n cheese ($4 small, $7 large), garlic cheesy hand cut fries ($6), & the caesar salad ($5 small, $8 large).
I've given this place five stars mostly because it makes "as good as it gets" mac 'n cheese east of Portland. It's like no other & I heart it a lot. It's three or four cheeses blended with elbow macaroni & bread crumbs on top. All of this is baked until it's a tender, bubbly, gooey, cheesy mess. It's da f'ing bomb, yo. I order it every damn time.
The small cup of mac & small caesar fills me up but the large mac can feed one hungry adult or it's still large enough to be shared by two, I'm-not-that-starving, peeps. I recently tried the cheesy hand cut fries & you can't just eat one. I think the cheese drizzle is the same blend as the mac but don't quote me on that. It was a tad too seasoned salty-ish but it didn't stop the three of us from devouring the entire plate of 'em.
DON'T ORDER THE REUBEN ($9.50). According to my pals both the pastrami & sauerkraut lacked flavor.
Inside SBAG there are two spacious rooms to choose, one that includes a cozy fireplace, which can fit small or large groups. For the warmer months there's an outdoor, back patio with picnic table seating. FYI: During live performances (indoor/outdoor) each drink order is $1 extra. The only complaint I've heard so far about SBAG are their hours; only open Thurs-Sun. They do have HH from 3-5pm those days but it's nothing to rush over for food-wise. Let's see... there's a full bar, minors are welcome until 10pm, & there's a large parking lot.
Not much more I can say other than don't pass this place up again, or at least when you're passing through Zig Zag during their open hours.
The Skyway is by far the best restaurant on Mt. Hood. The food is good, the drinks are just what you'd want and a fair price, and the happy hour is the best deal going on Mt. Hood! The atmosphere rocks, the fireplace is rad, and the staff can be pretty darn nice too!
That said, I can't quite give them 5 stars. They're the best on Mt. hood, but... they're not far enough away from Portland to get away with the price to quantity ratio. The food is great, but a lot of the plates seriously don't deliver when it comes to portion.
Still though, the best on Hood, and if they just upped the portions a bit they'd hands down be a five star joint!
Nestled in a giant hut off Highway 26, Skyway is a somewhat hidden gem when it comes to good grub near Govy. Every time I go, I swear I make a new friend. It's a great place to watch games during the day, they have lots of live music, and they're usually pretty packed. The decor is weird and awesome at the same time, and the food...oh man, the food. The mac and cheese is tasty and rich. I had the seafood chowder which was also delicious. Don't waste your time eating at the resorts...EAT HERE. You'll never go back to resort food (unless you're too lazy to come here).
Review Source:Mac 'n cheese at Skyway: Light of life, fire of my loins. My sin, my soul. Hallowed be thy every creamy spoonful.
Yes, perhaps it's a tad excessive to lavish some of the most beautiful words in English prose on mac n' cheese. But if you truly feel that way, then you probably haven't had it. If you had, you are down on your knees and weak with joy. And if you've had it after a few hours of playing in the snow on the mountain nearby, you know that a hot plate of something perfect is just sublime.
And that's really the only problem. Though big enough to loom as if it's in my backyard, a trip to Mount Hood takes planning and at least a few unhurried hours. And it'd be kind of much to make the trip only with the express purpose of the kitschy and friendly diner on the side of the road. Right? Right?
There are other foods - lots of hearty meat and starch dishes to warm your inner lumberjack. And from what I remember, it's all worth a try. But yes, the mac 'n cheese is the girl child who got away and her reincarnation just so slightly out of reach. The one the book is about.
But if you try to stick your privates in the food, that's entirely on you. I won't judge, but ew.
- Locale Destination -
It's on E Mt. Hood Hwy 26 and Rd Number 3, Zigzag, Oregon.
1 mile east of Welches on Highway 26 and 12 miles West of Government Camp and Ski Bowl.
Once you see the restaurant, you need to pass tiny bit and right turn to get into the parking lot (you can't get into the restaurant straight from the hwy). It's like 10 minutes from "Timberline Lounge", close to Mt. Hood. A little tourist trap before you hit the next bigger ones. Inside was kinda dark and typical dive bar things going on. They have a stage, seating, and bar. Outside is kinda like a backyard eatery - very homey. Service is good. Plenty of parking.
Â
Happy Hour: I know they do. See on my pic ;p
- Gluttony Expedition -
I wanted to try the sampler dish - $16. You can eat every meat they have with a coleslaw or beans. But I wasn't that hungry ;(
Beer: Tap. It was good but I forgot to write down the name ;(
Pulled pork : 1/2 lbs pulled pork comes with a slice of cheap white bread. The pork was sort of cold and a bit spicy without sauce. I chose the Chipotle sauce, which was bland. $8 doesn't come with any side. All the sides are a la carte like the fancy steak house. But here's only casual BBQ place by the Mt. Hood.... Meh.
French fries: Double fried. Nothing special about it.
Mac & cheese : They don't use the yellow cheap cheddar cheese for nachos. The sauce is light and tasty but large size is pretty small for $7. Good but I need to order more :p Very good homey dish.
- Conqueror's Deduction -
You don't see good foods nor restaurants around the area. So I guess it's alright. I would come back for Mac & Cheese if I came around here (not for BBQ).
This place is great--and by far the best eats available on the Portland side of Mt. Hood (and far better than anything in Government Camp).
I first stopped by after a Mt. Hood climb a few years ago. They've got a good selection of taps, some really decent barbecue (their specialty--vegetarians, they even smoke tofu if you're into that), and top notch Mac n' Cheese. Â It's worth going for the barbecue alone. These folks know how to smoke some meat. As a self-professed barbecue snob from North Carolina, I can say this is as good or better than most anything you can find in the Pacific Northwest--and it pretty much spanks the mediocre bottoms of most barbecue joints in the Portland area.
The ambiance is qUiRKy cozy, with awesome velvet paintings, a weird alpine fresco above the fireplace (which has a warm fire blazing in the winter months), and a huge patio out back for summer dining. If you ever have the opportunity to dine in the back room, it's utterly twisted, with an odd chandelier collection, and odd knickknacks galore. As a dining colleague put it, "This is the only place I've been to where a statue of the Buddha is flanked by a rocket and a naked woman."
Oh yes, and they also have Nuclear wings! They come in an order of six and they are HOTTER THAN HELL. I hallucinated and met my spirit animal the first time I tried them. Â If you know the el jefe at Fire on the Mountain, these are significantly hotter.
Finally, the staff are super welcoming and inviting. I make it a point to stop here whenever I am returning from the mountain.
We went for a hike and were starving after, so used Yelp to find the closest place... what a find! Â I had the mac n cheese with brisket baked in. YUM! Â Other people in my party had pulled pork and a reuben and we were allll loving it. Â Great flavor, great service, fun/casual atmosphere. Â Glad we stopped!
Review Source:My first time at this place was last night. Â The place is cool and has a really nice vibe as well as fireplace and patio. Â However, unless you were sitting right next to the fire it was cold, especially coming right off of the mountain. Â Since I started talking about burgers while on the chair lift at ski bowl I had my mind set on a burger. Â
I looked for some sort of appetizers to get started with and saw nothing on the menu that could be ordered. Â I ordered the burger which comes plain and then you can pick the toppings you want which is kind of cool enabling you to build your own burger. Â However,... Onions, cheese, mushroom, and bacon to me do not seem like they should all be valued the same. This was somewhat annoying. Â I ordered the grilled onions, bacon, and pepperjack which each were an additional dollar.
The burger came out and since i did not want to pay another dollar or 0.50 for more sauces/toppings i settled with the classic kethcup and yellow mustard. Â I ordered a side of garlic cheesy fries which was good but not worth $5. Â If i wanted to pay mountain prices I would have just ate at the mountain. Â The bun on the burger was somewhat hard but the thing as a whole tasted good. Â
I will give this place another try but if you are going to nickel and dime people just have different burger options and charge accordingly that way it doesn' t seem as bad. Â Maybe I just ordered the wrong thing as people who I was with rant and rave about this place.
To be continued...
Skyway...where even to begin?!
I had driven by this place so many times to and from Hood, and was always all "yeah, I should try that place sometime"...and you probably have too. Â (Today, *I* am here to change all that.)
I think a year or so passed and I still hadn't tried it.
Then a friend told me the food there was "pretty good".
I think pretty good is an understatement. Â This place has, by FAR, the best food between Portland and Mt Hood.
The ambiance is also uncontested. Â Skyway has a funky, charming vibe that's like no other place in the greater Mt Hood eruption-zone. Â The menu almost has its own vocab (they are 'sandos' not sandwiches, mmk?) Â The outdoor seating area (when it's in season) is huge and feels like a small concert venue mixed with the coolest backyard you've ever been in.
Some of the things that make Skyway great:
"Magical mystery" BBQ sauce: this is one of your BBQ sauce options, what it is constantly changes, and they won't tell you what's in it...that would ruin the mystery bro.
Speaking of BBQ who knew some of the best BBQ in Portland is actually in...Zig Zag?! Â It's seriously tasty stuff, and I'm from BBQ-country originally. Â And cheer-up vegans, they have BBQ tofu for you!
The specials: you usually have to ask but they're usually really good...everything from pot roast to prime rib.
Mac n' Cheese: yes, I know there are many people that despise the Portland trend of 'fancy' mac n' cheese (started by...Montage?), but I like it. Â The Mac here is really, really good.
Happy Hour: two lil' sando's and mac n cheese for dirt cheap (I cannot remember the exact price, $4? $5?) Â HOW can you beat that? Â Answer: you cannot.
Hot cocktails/specialty drinks: I'm a beer person (more on that later), I almost never drink any other form of alcohol. Â Having said that, I frequently get the drinks here. Â Last one I got had habanero vodka and hot cocoa. Â It was a really good choice and helped ease the post-mountain-chill I had going on.
Beer: great selection of beers on tap and great happy hour on them, probably the best beer selection in the greater Mt Hood lahar-flow zone.
This place is so good that even if it was in the heart of the Portland core, it would still be an incredibly note-worthy destination. Â But it's not, it's in the middle-of-nowhere, all unto itself, it's a refuge for climbers, skiers, and boarders...their throats dry from beer deprivation on the mountain all day. Â STOP DRIVING BY AND STOP-IN.
heading down the mountain? Hungry? I would not pass up this place! we popped by after a very active morning on the mountain and needed food, this was a random spot that turned into a very happy accident. pretty funky decor in this place but I love it! if you would mix what your grandmas hous looked like in the late 70's with a rummage sale that is what skyway looks like in the best way. our waitress was wearing some sort of German bar wench garb to commemorate Oktoberfest, there was a accordion player  and a few drunk silver foxes doing the hoky poky. If the food was terrible all this would have still made me wanna come back, for the sheer enjoyment. Luckily the food was AWESOME. $1 for soft pretzels with the yummiest cheese sauce.Great beer selection and of course as the previous reviews stated; the yummy-ist Mac and Cheese ever! so gooey and just down right sinfully good. I wanna come here everytime I''m leaving the Mountain! oh and lets not forget to mention that they also have sausage making contests!!! no I did not want to enter...but it was cool that it was available.
If you are in need of good food and awkward entertainment and happen to be heading to Mt Hood I recommend you go to Skyway Bar
Stopped here after hiking. Originally wanted to be able to sit outside cause the blonde brought the dog with us, but unfortunately they don't have an outside eating area which we could take the dog too.. oh well, that's cool...
So instead we ordered take away so we could eat on our way home. We got three samplers, mac n cheese with ham and a couple of sauces, first of all make sure you ask for plastic knives and forks when you leave the place, unless you have them someplace else
We got two each of the samplers that come with a couple of back ribs (Not baby-back), pulled pork, chicken and beef. For our sides we got Coleslaw and beans. Due to all of the write-ups about the Mac & Cheese, we decided to try it also with Tasso Hamm mixed in..
Well as someone who has been searching for what I consider to be good BBQ for the past 3 years here in Oregon, My experience with good BBQ is wide and being from Chicago we tend to use Hickory mixed with some Oak when we smoke BBQ. Â I think we have finally found the best place so far in Oregon for BBQ. The ribs by themselves without sauce were excellent, along with the pulled pork, chicken, etc.. The Chipolte and Mystery (Strawberry Vinaigrette) were very good on any of the meat samples. Â
The only odd thing has to be the listing of the smoked "Tofu".. huh? What the heck is this on the menu for?
The Beans were real good, not overcooked slight hint of tomatoe and nice BBQ flavor, without the flavor being overly smoked. These were good that's for sure.
The Mac & Cheese was out of this world. We could have just ordered a couple of these for dinner and have been done with it. I haven't had Mac& Cheese this good since we left Chicago three years ago.
Overall, we will stop back at this joint to chow down again and try more of the items that they had on the menu!!
.
I am not a barbecue fan. DH almost fell over when I told him that I voluntarily chose BBQ based on the other reviews. In the area for a conference at the Resort, and heard good things about Skyway. Decided to go with 3 others and we all had a great experience! The 1/2 rack of spare ribs was sumptuous - dry rub was appropriate, the side of sauce divine (I chose the chipotle, there are several others). Of course, I had to get the side of mac and cheese and people, do yourselves a favor and get yourselves some!
2 of the other folks in my party had mac and cheese with salmon which was outstanding (and rich), the 4th person had pulled pork with a sad little white bread grease sponge on the top, but the meat tasted lovely. He also was the grateful recipient of some of my ribs since the 1/2 rack was so huge.
Decor was really fun, found and funky. Service efficient (but it was a quiet Thu night, not in any particular season). Highly recommend.
We stopped by here randomly on the way home after a long day on the mountain. We were initially attracted by the yellow chimney, but when we got in, we saw that it wasn't just the chimney that looked awesome. This place is really cool, it has character, it has style, it has hot waitresses and it has really really amazing food (especially after a full day on the board). As a bonus, towards the end of our dinner a live musician took the stage and delivered free entertainment.
This place rocks and it is now my official must-stop for every trip to Mt. Hood.
This is your friendly mac and cheese addict reporting to you about one of my FAVORITE places (yet) for mac and cheese - Skyway ROCKS! Â They say it's ooey gooey - I say, DEAR GOD GIMME SOME! Â
Seriously, the bar is fun. Â Food portions are HUGE, especially if you do barbeque (which I didn't, sorry, but I watched people around me roll out of there a big rounder than they went in). Â Everything is made from scratch, on site, not delivered from "a va,n down by the river" or anything. Â Live music, great stage, and the owners are always there - super friendly, and make you feel at home.
But get the mac and cheese regardless. Â Seriously.
I have driven past this little place 100's of times without giving it much thought. Last night, after a long day of skiing at Timberline, we decided to stop in for a brew or two.
The staff was very friendly and attentive. When we asked about their micro brews, we were quickly encouraged to sample their inventory before making a selection.
The crowd seemed to be Skyway locals and everyone seemed to know one another. That didn't take away from the atmosphere or service. The people were all friendly and happy that we were there and the waitress made us feel like kings.
This quirky little pub has just become my favorite after ski party hang out. Great job guys!
What an awesome place to stop by after a day at Mt. Hood! Cozy, welcoming, a little quirky and with great food to top it all off!
We decided to stop here instead the usual place (Zigzag Inn) and I must say, Skyway just became the place to go for us!
Our waitress Tracy (who owns the place with her husband) was super nice; answered all of our questions; brought out beer & BBQ sauce samples when I couldn't decide.
The food was delicious - the cheesy garlic fries & mac 'n cheese are a must try; though my favorites were the ribs topped with blueberry BBQ sauce and the Spinach, Hazelnut & Blue Cheese salad topped with lemon vinaigrette (from the HH menu). Mostly everything is made from scratch - they even cure their own bacon & pastrami! They also have live music and happy hour (3-5pm; Thur-Sun) & full bar with some interesting sounding cocktails.
Try it, you won't regret it...
Wacky little place with a cool outside area where the kids can run around (really, please parents, put them out there and leave the bar area for the adults...)
I did kinda feel like I was in Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeers misfit town given all the party light bulbs, tinsel and strings of xmas lights. Â But that was nicely balanced by the random smattering of aging hippie decor and mountain murals. Â No complaints, really, it was just funky.
I was impressed with the service, I had a great server. Â Also the bartender/maybe owner or manager? walked around and asked us a couple times how we were doing. Â And another girl consistently cleared tables, dishes, etc. Â All were very nice and friendly.
Food was good. Â The ribs are Tennessee style, which means lots of brown sugar rub, no liquid. Â Some people won't like this style but I do.
The mac and cheese everyone raves about is good, but it would have to be orgasmic for me to rave about it. Â Really, I can make a good mac and cheese at home without that much effort. Â (Here's the big secret: Â they use pepperjack cheese.)
The pulled pork was pretty good, the frickles were fun and their sauces were pretty good. Â I liked the horsy creme fraiche with the ribs, yum.
Only one dessert option while we were there, a peach/berry pie, so I abstained.
I did end up getting stomach sick a few hours later. Â Maybe a fluke? Â My SO didn't have the same issue. Â I'll give the place another try and hopefully skip the ickies next time around.
If I were going to live in ZigZag or Mt Hood area, it would only be for this place!
Don't get me wrong... I love the outdoors and Mt Hood has so much to do with the snowshoeing, skiing, snowboarding, all the terrific hiking trails.. but I am a city girl at heart. Â
What is great about Skyway is that even after a long day of "working out," the portions are still so big, I can't finish an entire meal. Â I also eat it very slow to taste every little bite because it is just that good!
I am actually salivating thinking of the food! It is yummy! They don't have a kids menu, but they do have lil' burgers (tofu and meat) and their Mac and Cheese is great!
Anyone want to carpool? I need some Skyway about now :-)
I've been to the Skyway three times in the past few weeks due to a lot of time spent up on the mountain. For it's location in ZigZag, I wasn't expecting too much out of this joint, but my god this place is fantastic! Its quirky building and décor seem right at home for the location. The live music acts they bring in is pretty damn good. My first visit there was a French fusion rock band playing, which is way more culture than I'd expect to get in a mountain town.
And the food - oh the food - can only be described as f*cking fantastic! The mac n' cheese is by far the best I've ever had in a restaurant, the side of beets have great flavor (although they tend to run on the undercooked side) and be sure to start off with some darn good Frickles (fried pickles). I love that they have Lil' Tofu Sandos - bbq marinated tofu served on a slider sized bun - for the vegetarians out there. The pulled pork was so tender and tasty. There is a list of at least 7 different types of bbq sauce you can pair with your meat selection. The beer offering is also great with 6-7 rotating taps. If you're lucky enough to secure a couch by the roaring fire, it's about the most fantastic post-hike/snowboard meal ever!
What a great little find!  Headed here after a hike with some friends at McNeil Point; it is in the perfect spot right off of 26 in ZigZag.  Nice open, roomy eating/bar area with separate couch seating in front of a big fireplace.  They have funny décor (like women mannequins wrapped in Christmas lights) and they also have live music.  Friendly staff, good beer/drink selection, great down-home/almost Southern BBQ focused menu and comfortable table seating.  They use local ingredients with many truly homemade dishes.  Here is the run-down on our order:
1) Delicious BBQ tofu sandwich served on a fresh ciabatta roll - perfect for veggies!
2) Order the beets! Â Served hot, cooked in thin slices in a light olive oil/spice blend.
3) Homemade salmon mac n' cheese! Huge portion served casserole-style with the perfect crusty cheese top.
Totally reasonably priced and a great chill atmosphere, this is our new stopping point for adventures on this side of the mountain!
Skyway Bar & Grill has restored my faith in west coast bbq! Â I want to sing it to the Heavens. Â I guess yelp is next best thing.
My husband and I spent the day hiking on Mt. Hood and I am not exaggerating when I state that I spent the better part of the afternoon thinking about what manner of meat I wanted for dinner. Â Should it be Cow? Pig? or Chicken? Â I just knew I wanted it to be smoky and juicy.
We set our meal-after-hike hopes on Skyway and were so, so happy. Â It isn't much to look at from the outside or the inside but the food! THE FOOD. Â I almost don't want to tell you about it because I'm afraid you'll all go there and eat it up. Â
We ordered a half slab of ribs, buttered beans, and beets. Â The ribs are excellent. They do not need sauce. Â In fact, we were pleased that we didn't order them with sauce so we could better taste the perfectly cooked meat. Â The meat simply falls off the bone, it's that tender. Â The beets were sauteed in a garlic, butter, and balsamic reduction and were also very tasty with just a hint of sharpness, but still nicely smooth from the butter. Â The beans were mildly garlicky and a good match for the two stronger tasting dishes.
Skyway has a full stocked bar and a good selection of beers (on tap and by the bottle). Â Service is friendly and prompt.
4 stars instead of 5 because the place is a little run down... but hippie, not ghetto.
After a day of slaying pow what could be better than fried pickles dipped in aioli? Drinking beer with those frickles, that's what. Â And eating pulled pork so tender and flavorful there's no need for sauce. Â Sides were just ok, the slaw had too much celery. Everything is made inhouse, except for the bread, cheese and butter. Â Slackers.
