We drove by Slick's the first time because it looked closed, but something told us to go back and check it out. It looked like the kind of place we were looking for after driving hard all day, with further to go into Texas. Once we drove up, we were happy to see someone in the window who invited us into the back. At first we thought he meant a picnic table behind the restaurant, but soon a young man came out and invited us into the restaurant. Actually right into the back, into the kitchen, where they had a table set up and a friendly regular was already sitting.
Everyone greeted us as if we were family and we proceeded to spend the next 45 minutes swapping travel stories and eating the best hamburgers we'd had in all our six years of road tripping. They were fresh, juicy and custom made. The fries were also made right in front of us and hand cut. They offered up onions in just about any style you imagine. We left Slick's feeling like we had just had a once in a lifetime experience.
But it didn't end there. 10 minutes after we had left the restaurant, we were headed south on 283 into Texas. We were flagged down by a pickup truck traveling at a high rate of speed trying to catch us. After he pulled up next to us, the driver, one of the gentlemen we had met at Slick's, held up a ring. My daughter yelled out, "my ring", and so we pulled over and exchanged the ring for many thanks and handshakes. It was the perfect topper to a great experience. I can't recommend Slick's more heartily for both it's food and service, but it's character is unmatched. I hope others are able to visit and experience the character for themselves.
